I've got a roommate with a MBA. Our wifi router died, and he's excited to get an airport extreme because, not only can he start backing up wirelessly, but also he can (or thinks he can) use a USB optical drive wirelessly.

I installed the latest AirPort driver that allows the hard drive to be accessed over the internet which works great.
The problem is that it obviously only works with my user account since I linked it with my MobileMe user name. Is there any way to allow my other family members access to the drive over the internet, short of them going into MobileMe in system preferences and logging in as my MobileMe account?
I have an Airport Extreme with a external hard drive connected to it. I have video on it and would like to be able to watch it on my computer wirelessly. This works to a point but becomes choppy and skips a lot... what can I do to fix this. My computer is a new MBP so it is going through a n connect..

I have connected a hard disk to the usb slot on the Airport extreme that shows up in the airport utility but can't seem to find access the drive anywhere on my macbook.
Since Saturday I've been having trouble connecting to the internet. For the last 18 months we've been connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station (2003) which in turn is wired to a Motorola SB5101 cable modem. Every time I had called the ISP (Comcast), they've been able to get it going while I was on the line by restarting the modem (which I tried before calling). Last night nothing would work no matter how many times I rebooted the modem and after many trial and errors, we were able to get connected to the internet by hooking my MBP directly to the ethernet cable from the modem and taking the Airport out of the equation. The service rep decided my router was likely at fault and I wasn't inclined to argue as it is an old router and things do break over time.
However, I ran out and bought a brand new Belkin Share wireless router and now neither that nor the Airport can connect to the internet even when the lights on the modem say all is well. Unfortunately, the Belkin came with it's own software package for router management and setup, which I'm not too keen on. It kept saying it couldn't connect to the modem or that the internet connection to the modem was lost. In tonight's efforts, I'm always able to plug my MBP right into the modem and get a connection, but as soon as I move that cable to the Airport or the new Belkin, my internet is gone. The Airport connection in the Network section of System Preferences always comes up as connected, but the Belkin glows dark red instead of green and the accompanying software says no connection to the internet can be found.
Does this sound more like the fault of the modem, the ISP, or me, the user? Any help would be much appreciated. Although I am able to connect now, my roommate's computer doesn't even have an ethernet port.
I want to put all my media (mainly music and movies) on an external hard drive.
It will be connected to MacMini media server using Plex. Then I wish to share to a MBP over the network (using Airport Extreme Base station).
Question is what is faster?:
1) a Firewire 800 hard drive connected directly to the MacMini then shared over the network?
2) or a Network hard drive connected directly to the Airport Extreme via CAT5e/CAT6, then shared over the network?
Given the size of some video files I have (High def movies 4GB+) I'd like the smoothest and fastest transfer rate.
Really confused welcome any suggestions!
I just purchased an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS). I have most of my music stored on an external drive that I access via USB. I was thinking of moving the drive to plug it into the AEBS, and have iTunes access my music from there. I understand this will upset iTunes, since it wont recognize the HDD (since it used to be connected via USB). Is there a simple way to tell iTunes that the path of most of the music has moved to the network drive?

View 11 Replies View RelatedI just purcahsed an AppleTv and the Seagate FreeAgent 500GB External HD. I wanted to know if I could transfer my iTunes library to my external drive over Airport Extreme if the Seagate is attached via USB Hub?
I was also wondering if I did this would my library will be recognized by my Powerbook and AppleTV. Also when I sync iPods, iPhones and the like to my powerbook will they sync from the Seagate attached to the extreme?
I also plan on adding an iMac in October. Will it also be able to access the library from the Airport Extrene base station?
I have a USB External HD attached to my AEBS. I am able to see this drive within my own network, but I would like to be able to access this drive from the internet. Unfortunately I still use Windows computers, but they are the last to go everything else I have is Apple. My Drive is formatted in Fat32 and I read a post on here from March or May of this year that said I just had to open my computer and type the static IP address into the address bar, but I cannot get this to work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI picked up my first Mac about a 2 weeks ago and over this past weekend I picked up a new Time Capsule. Originally I bought the Time Capsule to wirelessly bridge to my Linksys router running DD-WRT (mega) but apparently the ethernet ports won't work on the Time Capsule or the Airport Extreme when connecting them to another party wireless router. So i have taken out my Linksys and am now only using the Time Capsule. The reason for the Time Capsule is to have backups on it and that for some reason I do have wireless issues with my Linksys that I am not having with the Time Capsule. Such as when I had a iPhone I would lose my wireless signle a lot and have to reboot, same with my iPad and sometimes with my Nexus One. So far none of those issues with the Time Capsule. I'm not missing much from my Linksys but one of the things I miss is being able to open up a browser from any network connection and being able to connect into my router. Is there a way with the Time Capsule / Airport Extreme to be able to access the configuration settings when not on the local network? Such a when I am at work I want to be able to access the configurations page.
View 14 Replies View RelatedToday I configured "Back to my Mac" and I'm having a little issue with the external HDD that is connected to the Airport.
Let me explain the configuration: Airport Extreme (latest version) configured with Back to My Mac option, with an external HDD connected using USB port (The HDD is externanly powered). iMac computer with OSX Mavericks wireless connected, configured with iCloud Account and Back to My Mac with screen sharing).
I can access the shared screen and control the iMac from my Macbook Air outside my home network.
The issue is when I try to access the "network HDD" because I can connect using the right user but Finder windows never shows the HDD content. I have to disconect and reconnect to the external HDD to be able to see the files (If I have 3 windows and want to access the HDD on each of the 3 windows, I have to disconnect and reconnect 3 times).
Question: There is any way to access the external HDD and be able to see its content using the configuration mentioned? The disconnect and reconnect procedure for each window is normal? There is a better configuration I can apply?. Just as information, from my MacBook Im able to see perfect the HDD content from outside my home network.

I have two external hard drives connected to my airport extreme. The hard drives don't act like they would if they were connected directly to my macbook, though.
For instance, I'm trying to use Carbon Copy Cloner to sync the two hard drives and they won't show up in the program. They also don't mount as they normally would and they don't show up in disk utility.
I'm using version 7.5.2... I think that is the latest version - I recently upgraded and I'm not sure if thats why I can't do the aforementioned things.
I can't figure out how to use an older version though (reinstalled the software that came with the airport extreme but that didn't work).
I am looking to purchase one of these external drives to use as a NAS with my Airport Extreme Base Station. I've read that these drives put themselves to sleep after 15 minutes of activity. Will this be a problem if they are connected to the APX via USB?
Does anyone have any experience with using this drive across a network?
So how do i retrieve my files through the wireless connection?
View 2 Replies View RelatedRight now I have have an external HDD connected to my MacMini, have my iTunes library on the external HDD and then set that library as the library on my iMac. That allows me to sync my iPhone with my MacMini's external HDD when over wifi when connected to my iMac. However, when I move that same external hard drive to the Extreme, set it as my iTunes library on my iMac I can watch video and listen to music on my iMac, but when I try to sync the iPhone iTunes just gives me a beach ball and I have to force quit. I find it strange that I can sync my iPhone to my MacMini's external hard drive over the network when I connect my iPhone to my iMac, but I can't sync to that same external hard drive when I have it connected to my Extreme. Am I doing something wrong or is that functionality just not there?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI attached external hard drive to Airport Extreme, set up home network and mounted the hard drive. My MacBook Pro can see the drive and all contents, including iTunes library. Our home PC which is running Windows XP also recognizes the drive and can see iTunes library in My Computer. Here is the problem. When I try to chose which iTunes library to open (Shift+click) in Windows XP, the library on my external HD is not visible so I cant open it! I see the cover art and music folder, just not the actual library. What am I missing here? I can see it in My Computer, why not in iTunes?! I need to link my external library to XP. Connecting external directly to PC will not work because I have a Time Capsule there.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn compensation for the misinformation at the point of sale about my linksys router, enough fighting with Apple scored me a free Airport Extreme Wireless router, overnight delivered. First, let me say, this router is AWESOME. Ok, so the setting up is a bit untraditional, requiring a computer application, as opposed to browser setup navigation, but whatever. This is FAST (wireless n, previous was only g), great for my wired devices, well secured, and overall just great.
So here's my question. I bought a Seagate FreeAgent Go PC edition (and formatted it from NTFS to HFS+ to save money). I have my backup on here (even though my router is right next to my iMac). So I plugged it into the router, and it detected in in the AirPort Utility, but I can't find the "Airport Disk Utility", and it's not on the disc that came with the router. How to I get it so I can mount this volume on either my wired iMac, or my wireless MacBook Pro?
I am trying to set up Time Machine to work with two Macs, using a USB drive connected to the Airport Extreme Base Station. I am using an IOMEGA 298.1 GB ST332082 0A drive, which now works fine when directly connected to my PowerMac G5. The drive shows up on the Airport Utility Disks menu, but not on the desktops of the G5 and the Intel MacBook (connected via wireless). From what I can find out, Airport Extreme requires a HD using 512 byte block size, and I am wondering if that could be the problem. Trouble is I don't know the block size of the Iomega HD and haven't been able to find out what it is.

Is there any way to allow me to just use the button on the drive or tie it to the eject button on the keyboard when it's connected, or even another key command like Opt-Eject?

I would like to be able to automatically back this data up off site. I can't seem to be able to do it with mobile me, and I don't want to have to unplugged it and take it off site to back up. View 1 Replies View RelatedIm super stumped on this one. I had been using my AE with a USB Hub and HD (for TM) for several weeks. My modem went bad- 2 days later it was replaced. Now, its like the USB port on the AE is dead. I determined that the hub was bad and got a new one. Plugging the USB hard drive straight into the USB port worked for a few minutes. Plugging the printer straight into the USB port allowed me to print 1 page and then it disappeared. I need to get everything working through the hub (brand new, confirmed working). Currently, nothing shows up in Airport Utility under Disks or Printers. Ive reset the airport and disabled / re-enabled file sharing.

I want to be able to access it from my macbook pro ( via wireless) and from my windows desktop (via wired). But I have a lot of movies in 720p and its larger than 4gb. I understand that the airport can only recognize FAT32 drives but FAT32 cant have files larger than 4gb. Is there a format for my 1tb seagate that I can use that can be read by my airport so that it can store files larger than 4gb and I can access it through my desktop PC and macbook pro.

I have an airport extreme and two 1TB hard drives connect to it through a USB hub.
Every night, I have a program that copies one of the hard drives on to the other. This has worked for the first year that I had the setup.
Recently, when copying, the mounted hard drives will disconnect and I will loose my internet connection. When this happens, the green light on my airport extreme turns to yellow and starts flashing- is it is restarting.
This also occurs if I manually try to copy a large batch of files.
I'm usually decent at debugging computer issues, but this one has me stumped.
I have an airport extreme that is currently connected to a printer so that we can print. I want to add a hard drive to back up all the computers with time machine. They are all apple computers running leopard. I was considering buying the time capsule, but was wondering if I used a usb hub and an external drive, would this work as well also. Not trying to run any programs on the hard drive. Just want a back up in case something dies. I guess my question is should I buy a time capsule or will the external HD, usb hub route work as well.

I either want to put my media library for iTunes on there or use it for TimeMachine. Problem is that when I plug it in, I cannot see the drive on the network. I had thought it would show up on the desktop. Even in network I have to find it and log in and if I reboot do the same. I was hoping for a more seamless install.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have read the threads about my accessing the USB drive on my Airport Extreme via an AFP connection...and it works. Without a hitch. BUT I would like to allow others (who are not on my home network) to access this same drive (with some level of security). Is THAT possible and if so, how? I have 2 partitions on this HD, one is a mac-formatted partition and the other is a FAT32 for PC user access. Or course, each partition has a unique name so, depending on the user, they would access either the Mac or PC formatted partition. BTW, I did some thread-checking but all seem to find are one's that show how to I can make a connection to my own drives away from the home, NOT someone who is not associated with my home network to make the same connection to the USB drive on my APE.
