Software :: Sync Two Macs Using External Drive?
May 10, 2008
I have a Mac at home and one at work. They are both Panthers and about 4 or 5 years old (still run great). The two machines are sort of growing apart from one and other as far as the data contained on each machine. Some is very similar and some isn't. Like I said, they are growing apart. Is there a way I could sync them by using an external drive? I would not want to lose data in the process.

Ok, was excited to get a refurb Mini today to setup as a Media Center using Boxee. I've got a 1TB WD External Drive used to store all my media, and I figured sharing that drive between the Mini and my Blackbook would be a cinch. WAY not the case. Both computers are running 10.5, fully updated.
These are the steps that I thought it would involve:
- Connecting the Drive to the Mini
- Turning on File Sharing
- Adding the specific folders on the Drive I want shared, and setting permissions accordingly
(Don't know if its relevant (or a stupid idea regardless), but I have the same user name and password setup on both of these machines as the admin)
- Connecting to the Mini in Finder on the Blackbook..............

I'm running SL. I have a MBA, an iMac, and a LaCie external drive. I want to plug the MBA into the USB port on the external drive and the iMac into one of the Firewire 800 ports on the external drive. (On the LaCie, I have two backup partitions for each of the computers -- one for ? backups and one for a CarbonCopy clone of the computers.) When I connect them this way, the iMac can see the drive, but the MBA can't. The MBA will see the drive only if I unplug the iMac from the drive. Is there some sort of trick for getting both computers to see the drive at once? I don't care if they see all four partitions; I'd just like the MBA to be able to see "its" TM and CCC partitions on the LaCie and the iMac to see "its" partitions.

I am switching from an iMac to a Macbook. I'll be selling my iMac later. I also have an external hard drive. My iMac and Macbook both have Snow Leopard. So we're good there. With an external hard drive, how do I "switch over" from Mac to Mac? Obviously I won't want to startup from the external hard drive. So just configure Time Machine on my Macbook and restore, just hand-selecting what I want transferred after going through the OS install on my new Macbook? Both computers have a different version of iWork though. So basically, how can I switch all of my programs/files over to my Macbook without overwriting the iWork-related programs? What's the best way? Hand-select Time Machine files/applications?

We have been syncing our iphones on our imac and now we have a macbook pro too. I did migration and transferred everything over to synch(at least I thought-same music, apps, etc) The record of back ups even show up on the mbp itunes. So when I went to sync the iphone it wants to remove all the folders I have set up. How can I sync my iphone on the new mbp without messing up all my work or organizing my apps. Is there a file I can transfer from the imac to the mbp?

I know mobile me would sync my ical, address book etc, but im not looking to spend 100 dollars per year to keep my machines synced.

I have an iMac at home and a MacBook Pro for school and I'd like to sync them together. More specifically, I'm looking into syncing my iCal database as well as my Address Book database. I do not wish to pay for MobileMe, as I find it too expensive and don't have so much money to waste at this moment of the year, but I tried it and it worked like a charm. It's just overpriced though, especially for a particular (maybe for an enterprise they will use every buck out of this service, but not me). I was wondering if there was a nice application for that... or an Automator script, of if I should try and figure out how to code my own Automator script?

I have searched and searched, and can't find the best answer for this question. What is the best way to sync files between Macs? I have two Macs in my house, and am wondering the best way to sync files between them? For example, when I make a change to document A on my laptop, I would like it to make the same change on my Desktop.

Does anyone here sync most or all their files between two macs? I have an imac and will be getting a mbp. I'd like both macs to have the same copy of itunes, iphoto and other documents. Will .mac sync do this or what software setup do you use to make this work?

My purpose is to summarize what I can collect as information on the best way to keep macs and devices in sync.
First, I will focus on the main goal I want to achieve: keep iCal and Address Book in sync for a macbook and a mac mini. The sync can occur via internet (nice-to-have) or simply when they are on the same network (minimum requirement).
Later below are also separately listed info on files/folder sync.
The option I have found so far:
For Address Book and iCal:
1) Mac OS X native option
Mac OS X Snow Leopard offers the possibility to keep iCal and Address Book in sync, via a Google Account or a Yahoo Account.
FREE requires Google account also keep Google Contacts and Calendar in sync But no contacts picture sync, limited phone number (3 or 4 per contact)
2) Mobile Me
iCal, Address Book, ...
+ storage, web hosting, complete integration with Mac OS X...
79$ / year
3) Others...
Spanning Sync 3
http://spanningsync.com/
Almost as option 1) as it requires a Google Account.
BusySync
Fruux

Only between computers. But they don't need to be ON at the same time (using fruux cloud).
FREE
BETA
also sync bookmarks and notes.
10.5 and upper.
For files/folder sync:
1) Mobile Me iDisk
2) Dropbox and analog, whether they are webbased on full applications
Dropbox

Chronosync
Amazon S3
Microsoft Live Mesh

3) Other solutions, more manual...

rSync
Part of OS X already. You may need to update it depending on the task, but if you can figure it out, here it is:
rSync
What am I using? I am now trying Fruux. Free and doing exactly what I needed: sync 2 macs for address book and calendar. Not less, and a little more. More after a few days of use!

I've had a MacBook Pro for some time, and am now wanting to sync all my programs (preferably without mobileme).
Many years ago, I was able to network multiple mac computers and have each of those macs draw their information from a common file on the server. For example, the mail program on each computer would reference it's mail file in the library which was an alias that pointed to the actual data file that was stored on the server. This was an easy way of linking the email, so when mail was altered on one computer, the changes were made (in essence) to all computers.
I would like to do that with my iMac and MacBook, but also the music library, iCal, Address Book etc.
Is there a way to set my Time Capsule up as a server to handle something like this?

I've had a MacBook Pro for a while and had been syncing my iPhone to it, and just got an iMac. I'd like to start syncing to the iMac (as well) so that I can have copies of all my stuff on all 3 devices. Is this possible? AppleCare tech support says "no" but I don't see why it should be. (my main reason for this is so that I can download applications or application updates from whichever computer I'm on, and don't have to wait until I'm on a certain computer to administer my iPhone)
I was thinking that to sync the applications to both devices I might have to copy them from my MacBook Pro to the iMac before syncing the iPhone to the iMac.. and I might have to be equally careful to make sure that the iMac has all the media/files that I want it to have before syncing to the iPhone --- lest I do something like wipe out all my iPhone music because there isn't any yet on the iMac.. so I'd first:
1. copy from MacBook pro to iMac all music, photos, apps (contacts, calendar are synced to Outlook so there's no worry here
2. then sync the iPhone to the iMac

I'm looking for something like syncOTunes but for iPhoto. My wife and I each have our own mac, and just like our music libraries, we end up with very different iPhoto libraries. From a simple "backup" perspective it would be nice to sync the two up now and then a la syncOTunes.

I have a new early 08 MBP laptop (Leopard) and a G4 tower (Tiger) using IPhoto 08. When out of town I have added photos to my laptop. I have also added different new photos to my tower. Is there a software way to update both computers to have the same photos? I have heard the term bi-directional (my Palm Treo does this). In the case of my Treo, if I have new info in both my phone and computer, both will be updated to match each other. Now I need to do that same syncing concept between both of my computers for IPhoto (I do not have .mac).

I would like to keep my playlists in sync across my macs.Is there some new "iCoud" way to automatically sync up my playlists? For example, I have an iMac and a Mac Book Air. I can keep all of my songs in sync with the new iTunes "Purchased" feature, and that works perfect. The piece I do not understand how to do yet is:I have a playlist on my iMac called "Good Songs" Currently, I know how to export this from iTunes as a text file and copy the text file to my laptop and import it.But then when I make changes on my iMac, I need to redo the export / copy / import all over again. Is there an iCloud feature I can enable or leverage some how to make these changes propagate automatically?

There are a lot of forums on this subject, but are specifically about Apple removing Keychain sync with iCloud. I cannot find any solution as to how to do it now they removed this option.
I have installed Keychain2Go but it just synced right away to "somewhere". I guess it's their servers. So I am concerned about that as I don't know this company.
So is Keychain2Go the only solution to sync Keychains now? I cannot find any other solution.

I am relatively new to Macs, have been using it for 5-6 months. I already know how to do everything but share folders and drives using my network connection. I have an iMac and a Macbook Pro. I have a 120GB Hard Drive hooked up to the iMac via Firewire. How can I share that Firewire External Hard Drive with my Macbook Pro? What are the steps I have to follow to connect both macs? Is there a way that I could also share my iMac's desktop files with my Macbook Pro? I already have a wi-fi connection between both computers, I just don't know how to share that hard drive between both simultaneously..
