IMac :: How To Set To Open File Type With Specific Software
Dec 24, 2009Is there any way we can set a file type (ex: .phtml) to open with a software forever? Like until death do us part? I'm very sick of having to chose "Choose a software" blabla. I want my .phtml files to automatically open with Dreamweaver. I did check the "always open this file with this application" and it doesn't work.

Jun 2, 2014Whenever I attempt to change the default program to open a file, it automatically reverts to whatever was selected previously. I work with a lot of .ai files and my default Illustrator version is set to Creative Cloud. CC crashes constantly on my machine, however CS6 runs smooth as silk. I'd like to be able to double click an .ai file and have it open in CS6, not CC. When I right click > Get Info > Open with and change it, it reverts as soon as I click "Change all..."

OS X :: Forcing A Given Application To Always Open A File Type?
May 18, 2010this is driving me insane. On Tiger I was always able to select the default application to open a given file type, but I can't do this in SL. I want the XLD app to always open my .flac files. So, I click on a .flack file, select "get info" and select "Open with - XLD", and then I click CHANGE ALL. Fine. Next time, I just click "open" on a .flac and it's back to some other application being the default for opening the file, and not XLD! It keeps doing that, no matter how I keep trying to get XLD to be the default... what am I doing wrong, and what can I do to get it to work?

Sep 2, 2009recently bought a macbook pro and slowly getting the hang of it. spaces is really great but i often forget to make the best of it because i'm too quick to open the applications before switching to the right space. so, as the title says, is there a way to make sure programs always use a specified space when starting up? i know you can always move the programs afterwards but not unless you use the mouse and even after moving they still consider the startup space thier "main" space (for error messages and the like). also, i'd like to use my mouse as little as possible

Nov 16, 2008My little sister constantly gets on my computer, which is fine, except for when she opens itunes. I have songs that are explicit and don't want her to listen to. Is there any way to have itunes require a password when clicked on in the dock, so that itunes would not open without my password. I realize that I could just log out each time or require the password when waking from sleep, but really itunes is the only app I don't want her opening.

I specified Microsoft Word when asked as that seemed the most logical contender, but I can't open it in any of the formats that offers. Sep 8, 2009I use Comic Book Lover to read digital comics - these are .cbr and .cbz files, which are comic rar and zip archives, respectively. Pre-Snow Leopard, these were recognised by Comic Book Lover as Comic Book Lover files, complete with custom icons, icon previews, etc. I also use .rar and .zip files for archiving. When I installed Snow Leopard, it read all .cbr files as .rar files for Stuffit Expander, and .cbz as .zip files. I actually use UnRarX for rar file management, so using the Get Info box I changed all .rar files to use UnRarX, .cbr and .cbz to use Comic Book Lover, and .zip to use the standard Archive Utility.
Problem is Snow Leopard is not distinguishing between .rar and .zip and .cbr and .cbz. Once I've changed all .cbr and .cbz files to open with Comic Book Lover, all .rar and .zip files also get changed! Likewise if I set all .rar files to be opened with UnRarX, this changes all .cbr files! Clearly Snow Leopard is handling file types in a new way. Is there anyway around this, or am I going to have to pick one file type affiliation that would be most useful (say .cbr and .cbz opened with Comic Book Lover), and live with having to right-click on a .rar or .zip file to say "Open with..." UnRarX or Archive Utility?
OS X :: View All Folders/files With File Open Dialog In Any Application?
Mar 13, 2009I have setup up Finder to view all folders/files. I know how to become root from Terminal using (su) and navigate to all folders and do things.
The problem I can't figure out is when I use Mac apps (such as TextEdit) to open a file in one of the hidden folders (such as /private/etc/apache,) I dont see them in the dialog even though I am logged in as root and have enabled the Finder to show all files.
Is there a way to view all the folders from these dialog boxes? I dont want to use vim or pico for editing.

Aug 29, 2009I was wondering if I have the ability to set my download preferences for my Mac (I'm running Snow Leopard -- just installed it yesterday!) to send certain file types to specific destinations. For example, I want to set up several folders so that when I download a .gif or .jpeg file, it will go into my "Pictures" folder. Also, as I download .pdf files religiously for my academic pursuits (which just so happens to be in the field of religion...), I'd like to make a specific "Articles" folder to have all .pdf files download into it. I hope this makes sense.

Sep 23, 2010In Safari 5, I've noticed that in the address bar, when you type "wiki" and then something after it, it'll search Wikipedia for that particular item. Is there any way via extensions, or something along those lines, to make it work similarly with other "keywords" or what have you? Chrome essentially works this way with any search engine you like, and it's literally the only reason I'm still on Chrome rather than Safari full-time. And before anyone mentions it, I know about Glims. But I don't just want multiple engines in the search bar; I really like the utility of just typing in the address bar.

Feb 20, 2009We just upgraded from 10.4.11 and noticed that Printer Specific setting (like line screen, scaling, wrong reading, etc) are not getting passed to our image setter. The image setter is AGFA Avantra running on a Tiapan RIP running on an NT4 server. The PPDs are generated using the RIP's EDF software. The most up to date PPD code is Laserwriter 8.7.
We had no problem in OS 10.4.11

Jul 18, 2009I was wondering I have been playing World of Warcraft for a long time now, and I was just beginning to play around with the graphics settings, and Im on that border line where if I have my graphics set to full my FPS isn't quite there and so I was wondering if there was something I could do, or something that sped up the foreground application or chosen application or something, know what I mean? As this would hopefully just bump up my speed a tad. So that it focused it processing power on the application in use.
Also, while typing the above I just thought, when Snow Leopard comes, the OS itself will be a lot speedier, as well as applications like Safari, and the other Apple apps including in OS X, but will it significantly speed up normal other apps as well?

Oct 31, 2010I want to separate the application folders of both myself and my girlfriend using the same Mac. She doesn't need to see my system tweaking tools and DVD conversion software, and likewise, I don't need to see her BlackBerry Desktop software and Facebook album tools. Currently, all apps reside in HD/Applications, as is default. My question is: is it safe to simply copy all applications into HD/User/USERNAME/Applications, or is this going to cause problems will existing file structures?

I've checked the activity monitor and with just a browser & LR3 running I have just over 10 GBs of Free memory. LR3 is using 1.72 GBs. Back in the day you could allocate RAM to a program like photoshop so it wasn't such a dog. Is there anyway to do this in MAC OS X?

Aug 1, 2010After applying an image to be an application's icon, the image does not appear but instead the image of Preview appears with the image's type (for example jpeg) on it. I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong, other than possibly using the wrong image type. Is there a proper image type to use (I've tried pretty much every type but none of them seem to work), or do you have to change icons from somewhere other than 'get info'?

It took me a long time to re-configure everything, I choose the "double" protection from Google (with sms), and my Mac asked me this morning to give several times my Apple ID password, for iMessage, Face Time, etc...)
Now it's not possible to send a mail to my office. It is when I send it via website of Google, NOT when I use "Mail" on my Mac.

Aug 13, 2009is there a way in leopard to globally set a default application to open files with a designated ending? for example, my system will open ALL .php files in dreamweaver, while i prefer to have the system open them in bbedit i know there is a way to open a specific file with a certain application but i am finding it annoying to have to do it every time instead of just being able to double click the file and have it opened in the prope application.
