With the ability to keep movies/tv shows in the folder where all the iTunes media is stored, what's the purpose of the individual music and movies folders in OS X? I'm trying to organize my media and would like to find out what the best way to do this is (right now I just have all my files in my iTunes media directory).

I read in this post that it should be a simple manoeuvre to move the pictures folder to another location and replace the pictures folder in the old home folder with an alias pointing to the pictures folder in the new location. I thought perhaps I can follow that procedure also for the other folders.

I've been looking at buying a Mac for some time now and recently decided the iMac was the way to go. Now I'm not sure whether the new model suits my needs better than the old, so I was wondering if somebody could give me some advice on this.
What I'm going to do with it:
- record audio with an external audio interface
- use Cubase or Logic
- use an external full-hd monitor (dvi and hdmi inputs)
- use an external FW800 harddisk
- playing or editing hd-video (editing is not important, but it would be nice)
Does DDR3 and higher memory bandwidth give me any advantage? I think recording audio isn't that hard on the memory, besides using samples (which I won't besides some drum-sampling instrument like ezdrummer or addictive drums). Does the shared video memory affect overall performance? Or is it just like having less RAM? I know the old model has an FW400 and a FW800 port, but are they on the same bus? I heard someone say something like that, which would mean that my external harddisk would run on 400 when I connect a FW400 interface to the 400 port. I tried my best to read as much as I could about Macs and specs over the past few months, but I feel like I know too little about above mentioned issues to decide on the new versus the old iMac.
Is there a way to back up individual movies/tv series in iTunes? I've ripped a lot of my dvds to itunes to watch on my iphone. My macbook HD is really starting to get full. Can I just do a TM backup, and then just delete whole tv series? And then, can I individually restore them from the TM backup? If so, how? Does this make sense?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI love AirPlay. I use it on my iPod Touch the moment I get home to play music to my speakers connected via AirPort Express. I use it on my iPad too when i'm watching a movie..
Even on my MBP when listening to music from iTunes. But Movies in iTunes don't work. The AirPlay icon in a movie playing in iTunes only shows "computer" and doesn't show any other options.
Is there a setting in OSX that will set the Finder to show folders on the top before individual files - much in the same way Windows does?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with organizing my movies. At present a series of iTunes moves over the years has left me with a whole mess of duplicate and triplicate movies that are difficult to reference. So I popped the hood on iTunes and got to work.
So far I have:
*Renamed the movies to relavent titles.
*Sorted them all into folders and organised the folder structure the way music is stored.
*Deleted duplicates and triplicates (and even more copies in some cases).
*I did this first in an old back up.
*Then in live iTunes
*Found multiple folders with the movies.
*One located Music>iTunes>Media>Movies
*The other located Music>iTunes>Movies (found lower down in the file structure)
Doing this made no difference to the way the movies were being displayed in iTunes. This means iTunes is getting the info on what to show on the screen from something or somewhere else?
How can I get iTunes to show the movies on screen as they are arranged in the folders or as iTunes organises the music?
Is it something to with the "iTunes Music Library.xml" or "iTunes Library.itl" file?

This seems to be an ongoing problem and you can see from my other posts that it is still not resolved: I have a restored previous Itunes library now appearing in my Itunes application, but when I click on any music within it, a box comes up saying: "The song can not be used because the original file could not be found, would you like to locate it?" When I click on this, it just takes me to the 'Music' file which is completley empty. I am scared to connect my Ipod in case I lose all that is on there as well and can not find the 'manually manage music' in preferences. I also have a brand new Ipad that I need to sync with ITUnes. I am also concerned about connecting my external hard drive for the same reason as I can not find anywhere in Time machine preferences that will turn off the automatic download once the external hard drive is connected. I am running Mac OSX 10.5.8 & Itunes 10?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've never bought iTunes music/movies before so I never bothered to know this stuff. I only buy iPhone games, and as you know it's no problem to just re-download them after a erase-and-install or whatever. But with movies+music, you can't do this. I know they are riddled with DRM (the movies, anyway), so I'm wondering how I'd preserve them between reinstalls. I know I can burn a DVD or CD and do it that way. But to be environmentally friendly (and more hassle-free ) can I just, say, transfer the movies to a folder on my iDisk, then after the reinstall, transfer it back into iTunes? Will it retain all the information, play back fine, and everything despite the DRM?

When I open the files in VLC they play as an mp3 would and I can hear tracks from my library that I recognise...
PS: my music and video libraries are on different physical disks and the videos are not in iTunes.
The one i would use is an episode of Robot Chicken, but I have at least 100 episodes doing this thing, although not all of my collection.

I have a new 5 gen Ipod Nano that I have synced up movies and podcasts as well as music files.I tried to purchase the trivial pursuit game and itunes debited the $. The info says that it is compatible with the nano 5g but I cannot get it to show up. It does show on Itunes though [ v 9 ]. I have plenty of memory available. I turned to trusty old super duper. i did a backup using "smart update" which in the past has left all my files on my external drive intact and copied over my main drive. however today it decided to simply erase the drive and then do a backup. It's NEVER done this before in the past, and i've now lost everything on my media drive: music, photos, movies, everything. can i recover what was lost? or am i completed effed in the a? the irony: doing a backup and in the process losing everything that counted.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI finally ripped my music into digital format. It is a very large library so I performed the rips in four segments creating four folders of music. The highest level folders are Music1, Music2, Music3, Music4. The next layer folder is the artists name, then album name, then the actual MP3S. How do I merge the folders? If I perform a copy the first artist name is sees that already is exists, the finder wants me to skip the copy or replace the folder that is there. I simply want to add the folder or merge it. Is there a "merge" function in OSX? I tried Carbon Copy but it will not copy or sync fils on the same disk.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy iTunes folder is in /Louis/Music/iTunes, but for some reason iTunes keeps creating a separate folder /Macintosh HD/Music and dumping a few songs by a few different artists there. I've tried 'consolidating' the library twice, deleting the songs from iTunes and re-adding them. I have the 'keep iTunes music folder organized' option as well as the 'copy files into iTunes folder' options checked. Nothing works. What is wrong? It makes absolutely no sense why it would create it's own random folder and dump the songs there.

I have a folder full of music (laid out like an iTunes Music folder, all the artist folders) on the external, and I only want to delete the music that I already have on my computer. Is there a way to select just those folders that I already have, or will I have to do the tedious job of going through each folder? It's like, 50GB worth of music here.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I go into my iTunes folder (on windows ) all of my music folders are empty. There is an artist folder and an album folder for all my music but each one appears empty.
When I right click on the main iTunes folder it tells me that I have 26gB of stuff so it must be there somewhere (and I haven't set them to be hidden files). When I am using iTunes and go onto 'Get Info' for a song, it tells me that it is in the iTunes folder. Also, when I search for a specific song title in Windows, the file is shown.
Was wondering if anyone else was having this problem or knows of how to rectify it.
