OS X Mavericks :: How To Manually Move Mail Files
Aug 28, 2014My desktop system (an i3 running Mavericks) will not boot from its internal disk (it simply sits "spinning" its little progress bar at the Apple icon). It also fails to recognize an attached disk that has the Time Machine backups in Recovery mode.Â
Migration Assistant is worthless. I get part way through (specifying a different user as a destination with the i3 disk mounted in Target disk mode) , it exits, and nothing has changed.Â
Yet I can mount the iMac desktop and its disks on a laptop (also running Mavericks) in Target disk move, and see all the files on both disks. I have copied some, and they seem to be intact. Â
So, while I ponder this confusion, I would like to get the most critical info off and onto the laptop. One of those pieces of info is the email contents.Â
Now Mail files "were" in the users Library as I recall, but I believe things were moved in Mavericks (or maybe even a version earlier).Â
Does any one have ( and I remember seeing this posted somewhere online, but just can not find it) the steps to manually move the mail folders over to a new machine so that nothing is lost with the most recent Mail file locations?

Jun 28, 2009However, I am apparently too dumb to figure out how I can move (cut and paste at the same time) a folder from on location on my hard drive to another without going back to the original area and delete the folder after the "fake" moving process. It seems that MAC does not support the physical movement of a folderfrom location A to B.
Scenario:
I have a folder called A
I select the folder (click with mouse)
I drag the folder to the desired destination B
I release the mouse and what happens: MAC starts to copy the folder and its files.
I read on several forums and pages that it is possible if you hold down the command key (after you click the folder you want to move) but it does not work for me. Does anyone has a simple, short answer whether it is possible to move a folder which contains files from location A to B on my mac (same hard drive)? This cannot be true that this does not work in the FINDER. Even if I select the folder go in the Finder menu to "Edit" (cut is grayed out and not clickable) it does not give me the option to perform a cut and paste. So, does cut and paste work for folders on a MAC or not.

Sep 26, 2009I need to know if it is possible to open two different folders that are in "MY Documents" folder at the same time so I can drag files from one to the other. I'm use to doing this in windows and can't seem to do it on a mac. It won't let me open two at a time.

Jan 9, 2011I have been collating files and documents over the past few months. I have decided to keep them in a more organised fashion so I created a folder for films, music, etc and then I want to put further folders in the folders so I can keep certain files together.
I have created the folder but cant seem to move the files in to it - I can copy it then paste it but that seems a bit long winded just to move a file in to another folder (folder within folder.)

Feb 2, 2009I use Lightroom 2 to catalog my photos. I am in the habit of shooting in RAW+JPG mode which means when I download my photos there is both a .NEF and a .JPG file for each photo. Having done this for several years on a PC, I now want to use iPhoto to view the jpgs and keep with Lightroom for the nefs. I therefore want to move the .JPG files from /Photography/RAW/<Year>/<Month>/<Day> to /Photography/JPG/<Year>/<Month>/<Day>. So far the only way I've worked out is to copy the entire folder structure then use Spotlight to find the nefs within the new folder structure and delete them.

Apr 14, 2012I've downloaded mp3 files from various websites that give away free music. They download as zip files and once I unzip them, I move the folder to the "Music" folder. Then I import them into iTunes (File ---> Add to Library). Â I'd like to make the "Music" folder more organized. Right now I have the "iTunes" folder within the "Music" folder, in addition to SEVERAL folders I've added from the free music I've downloaded. Â Even though I've already added this music to iTunes, if I delete the folders within the "Music" folder, iTunes will no longer be able to play it because it will say it cannot find the source. I get this, but was hoping there was a way to get it into the iTunes folder (the way it gets loaded when you import a CD or buy a song online- it automatically goes there). Â

OS X :: External Drive As Another Folder / Move And Copy Files?
Apr 27, 2010I have two Macs, a desktop PM G5 and a laptop Black Macbook, both running 10.5.8. Currently when using the laptop I can see and access the PMG5 and its files through my wireless connection. I'm planning on picking up an external drive, and I'd just like this confirmed, as in its access ability. If I hook up the external drive to the G5 so I can leave it there, and access its files through the G5. will my laptop also be able to access it through the G5. In other words, when I access the G5 from the laptop over wireless, will the external drive appear as just another folder and/or device on the G5 and I'll be able to move and copy files just like I already do?

Dec 31, 2009I installed Entourage 2008 on my MBP 10.6.2 and updated it to the latest version. Everything worked fine until today. I can't grab and drag individual messages to put them into folders anymore (the move-to tool still works). I also can't grab folders and drag them onto my desktop (for archiving, e.g.) anymore. I believe it worked initially. The only thing I can think of that I did since the first installation of Entourage was create a backup of my system on another partition using SuperDuper and since then Entourage upon startup asked for permission to use an obscure font on that backup partition, which is weird in its own right. After getting that message a few times (and denying access every time) I chose the option for Entourage not asking me again, so I don't know the exact name of the font it was asking. But I'm sure it was one of the WarnockPro incarnations. Is there a way to get Entourage to ask me again for that font?
But more importantly, addressing the main issue re. drag and drop of messages and folders: has anybody heard of such behavior and knows of a fix?

Jun 11, 2012After installing Lion, I can no longer move program icons from my applications folder to a sub folder. When I do, it makes a copy and leave the original in the applications folder. When I then try to delete the icon in the applications folder it tells me it's required by the OS and won't let me delete. I'm forced to keep certan applications such as Time Machine and Stickies in the application folder.

Jan 10, 2011I need to reorganize my music folder on my laptop and I need to know if when I move all 7,500 songs into proper folders if I'll be able to get my library back to the state it's currently in without having to redo everything manually. I've gone through a great deal of time (2+years) rating my music and making playlists for specific occasions. So it would be a huge pain to have to redo everything. Also, will it effect my iPod classic or iPod touch if I do this?

Apr 18, 2010When you download a file (a song for example) from the internet and it downloads into your "Downloads" folder in finder, than you drag it to your "music" folder, its permanent home...does this mean you now have 2 copies of this file, one in the downloads folder and one in the music folder?
Is there any way to manage this without manually deleting things every time you download anything? Perhaps I'm missing something

Dec 6, 2014I manually manage my videos and music. I don't want to sync. However, when I try to add books to my iPhone using iTunes 12, the only option I have is to sync and then an iTunes window opens up and says that I will lose all of my music and videos on my iPhone if I sync. I don't mind syncing my iBooks, but I don't want to be forced to sync my music and videos as well.Â
There is no book tab in iTunes 12.Â
Any other way to add iBooks to an iPhone and iPad manually. Â

I would like to manually re-arrange a few so that it looks like this:

However, Finder won't let me take them out of their arrangement. When i try to drag a file down, it just snaps back to its original position.
I've set it as Arrange by-none and sort by-name, so shouldn't this let me move them?Â

OS X :: Permission Restrictions While Copying Files From Backup Manually
May 10, 2010I am running into "chmodperation not permitted" when I try to change the permissions on my time machine backup manually.
Here is the complete info. I brought a new MacMini server and was trying to copy my music folder from time machine backup(of my MBP) into the Server. From the Server I logged in as root and tried to change the file permissions of the music folder with this command
sh-3.2# chmod -R o+rw Music
It throws the above error.
I don't have my MBP with me to do anykind of stuff. I don't want to install SL on my macmini and restore from time machine bckup. Is there any other way.
OS X :: Can I Manually Drag Back Files From Time Machine
Jun 1, 2010I'm planning to reinstall Snow Leopard. I'm using Time Machine. I want to avoid automatic solutions like "Restore from Time Machine backup" and the Migration Assistant because I want to make sure my system stays clean.
This is how I imagine it:I boot my freshly installed system, plug in my Time Machine external drive, open it with Finder and start dragging back all the stuff I need (Photos, Music and Documents) just as if it were a regular external hard drive with files on it. Then I will reinstall all applications manually.
Will this work? Please tell me if you have ever tried this and whether it worked. Will this not cause problems with permissions or anything like that?

Now, I like to keep my Documents folder neatly organized and this My Kindle Content folder kind of messes things up a bit - I really don't like seeing this folder in my Documents folder. question: Does anyone know how to move this folder to another location? I've tried to browse the Kindle app, but I haven't found any obvious way to move it. However, I may have overlooked it. Also, I have tried to browse the Forums to see if someone else asked this question already - no luck yet. Has anyone out there had the same problem? If so, is there a way to move the My Kindle Content folder without messing things up?
