PowerPC :: Any Way To Reformat Without Original Install Discs
Jan 15, 2007
I just sold my 15" PB and want to reformat it for the new owner. I lost the original install discs, but I have a legit retail version of Tiger just for this machine. Can I do the hold down 'C' thing, or is there something special about the original install discs?

I would like to clean out my HD and reinstall OS X 10.5.8 Leopard, but I do not have the original install discs. My plan is to buy the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard universal retail disc from an outside dealer (going for $200+) and also buy additional memory (2GB 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-4200)) to help with space.
I am worried about not being able to run QuarkXPress 6.0, Extensis Suitcase X1, Microsoft Office 2008, and Adobe Creative Suite CS3 once I reformat. I do not want to upgrade to Lion because most of these programs do not work or in the case of CS3 very glitchy on Lion.
is this the best route to go? I do not want to buy leopard and the ram, until I know for sure this is the right way of proceeding.
Info:
iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), 512 MB

I am selling an iBook G4 and I can't seem to find the restore discs. Is there anyway to restore it to it's original form without them? If not, does anybody know how to go about getting them?

I have a Mac mini running OSX 10.4.11 that I purchased second-hand. It did not come with the original install discs. I want to give it to my grandson now that I have a new i-Mac, but cannot figure out how to remove myself from the Admin position and substitute him.

I've got an aging powerpc iBookG4 that came with OSX Panther (10.3)... time's taken it's toll on the old thing and it needs a refresh. Problem is I can't find the install discs, would I be able to use the install discs that came with my intel MacBook? I think buying a copy of Leopard would be too much for it.

I just bought the new 24" iMac and I looked at the backup discs and they said it could install OSX Tiger. I also have an old iBook G4 I got my moms friend who moved. I know the iBook could handle 10.4 as it has 10.3.9 now but what I was wondering was. If I could install the OS on the iBook from the iMac backup discs. I but the disc in the iBook and it wanted me to restart to begin the installation of OSX but I quickly backed out. Do you guys think If I proceed with the installation it will install smoothly or, should I just forget about it.

Just bought a new iMAC 27 and I want to sell my MBP 17". I want to wipe the HD clean so the new owner doesn't get any of my stuff. Can I do it with the SL discs that came with my new iMAC because when I bought the MBP, it came with no discs. Or is there a quick way to remove all personal information? (like delete the admin account a create a new one)

However, I don't have the iBook's system discs because my mother lost them (she was using the iBook until I gave her my MacBook).
I called Apple to get new system discs, and they sent me an OSX 10.5.6 Retail Install DVD to install on the iBook, but this doesn't include iLife.
Obviously it's not the end of the world if I don't include iLife (even if it is iLife 05), but I think it would help me sell the iBook if iLife was included.

I have a summer 2005 14" iBook G4 that I'd like to wipe and give to a friend, but I seem to have lost my install disks somewhere in one of my moves in the last 5 years. The Apple Store employee I talked to said I should make an appointment at the Genius Bar and they'll do a wipe and reinstall for me, but I'm not interested in putting much more money into this since I'm giving it to a friend as a favor (hers just died). Any suggestions for how to get a copy of the right OS and all the iLife software, too? It has Tiger, but I could put Leopard on it, if that's easier to get a hold of.

I wonder if anyone can give me the basic steps to setting up a RAID array on a Powermac G4 (I think I mean a Raid 0 ie one extra hard drive).I have looked up a couple of articles but they advise to use the original install disc during the set up process. Unfortunately I don't have the original install disc. I have available one extra internal hard drive and one external hard drive.
I would like to set it up so that there are two internal hard drives with one replicating to the other one.

I came home for vacation and decided to reformat my imac g5 to get a fresh start. I backed up all my files, took out my leopard retail box, and was ready to go when I opened up the box, and noticed no disc. I have no idea where it went.I have the install discs from the computer when i got it, but it only has 10.4, so id rather not use them. I have the install discs from my macbook pro with 10.5, but I am pretty sure it will not work.So does anyone have any suggestions? Should I just go ahead and install 10.4 until and then just install 10.5 when i find it? (i really hate doing this, I hate having more than one version of an os installed)

Last week I got my RAM upgraded from 512MB to 2GB on my Mac mini Intel Core Solo 1.5GHz 2006 model, and I wanted to reinstall Mac OS X Tiger (using the original discs that came with my machine). Just wondering if the RAM has changed (i.e. since mine is now 2GB) the original discs won't work? Cause right now I try slotting in DVD 1 of the installation discs and it just stays on the Apple splash screen with the continually spinning icon underneath the Apple logo - won't go any further. At first I thought it might be either the DVD drive or something else but a friend suggested it may be the RAM that's not making the discs work as according to him the discs will only work with the original hardware and specs (i.e. 512MB RAM) of the machine (unless its a retailer version).
Found out it was partition related that's causing the disc not to boot past the Apple splash screen. I accidentally deleted the hidden OEM partition when messing with partitions (and this is what makes the grey discs ability to boot into the installer). I went to an Apple authorised service provider near my area and they tested a retail copy of the Mac Box Set of Snow Leopard and it booted into it fine - purchased Snow Leopard Mac Box Set yesterday, installed perfectly . If you have Tiger or don't have leopard currently installed, you need to purchase the Mac Box Set of Snow Leopard at approximately $129/$169.

I have Sibelius 7 installed on my MacBook Pro. It is licensed to a friend of mine, he gave me the second license that comes with the software. I am looking to reset my Mac to Factory Settings, as if it's new, but I would like to reinstall Sibelius once it has been reset. The problem is, I don't have the original discs, my friend has them. Am I able to reinstall Sibelius from a back up without the original discs, or should I wait until I can use the discs again?
I'm running a MacBook Pro with OS X Version 10.9.3 with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor with 8GB of memory.

I got tiger install discs for my emac but I cant get it to run the install. I tried putting the disc in and clicking the restart button on the screen that says "Welcome to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger", but when I click it it just restarts my computer and does nothing. I then tried the alternate install it did the same thing it did nothing but restarted my eMac. I then tried restarting my computer while holding c key nothing once again. Then I tried holding down apple, option, f , and o keys and then typed in cd boot and also tried cdrom boot nether of them worked so i restarted and tried dvd boot/dvdrom boot nothing worked on all the occasion i got a grey screen with a circle with a line through it. What do I need to do to get these install discs to work?

When I got my external drive, I backed up my copy of leopard onto my drive so that if I lost the disks, I'd still have a copy.Such a thing has happended, and I need to do a clean install. Is it possible to install (reformat and install) from a FW400 drive?I know its possible to burn it to a dual layered dvd, but I don't think my iMac can burn them, and the fact that they're stupidly expensive.

As the title states, I plan on reformatting my mbp. I'm quite new to this so I really need your help. My mbp came with leopard but I later on upgraded to snow leopard. Knowing that I bought it as an upgrade, I should install the leopard cd that came with my mbp. This is where i'm getting confused, should i install all the updates before installing snow or can I immediately pop in snow and install it? And what else should I keep in mind when reformatting? Thanks in advance!

I have a 13" white macbook with leopard on it that I got about 2 years ago. Anyway, the other day I was cleaning stuff I didn't need anymore off it and I somehow accidentally moved the "library" folder that's in the "system" folder in to the trash. I tried removing it but it wouldn't let me, then my mac froze and I restarted and it just showed the Apple logo while flashing an anti-logo and a folder with a question mark on it. I took it to the Genius bar and the guy asked me if I had my files backed up and I said no, but he told me a way I could back them up on my girlfriend's mac using a fire cable and then just reformat it myself. So I bought the cable and put the files on my girflriend's mac. However, now when I'm trying to reformat it from the installer disk, it doesn't seem to be working. It shows the Apple logo and the loading gear underneath and then it switches to that anti-logo (circle with slash through it) and the loading gear continues. I let it run like this all night but still no change. I tried resetting the PRAM and other things. I've held C and held D to run a hardware test and it says there are no problems. I've held Alt/Opt and it recognizes the disk but it doesn't seem to load anything from it.

I have a Macbook that was bought new earlier this year and an older Macbook Pro (original Core Duo) running older OS (10.4.11) with iLife '08. Can I use the MB's install disc to update my MBP OS+iLife? I'd like to buy Aperture for my MBP, but now need to update my OS first... guess should have bought Ap 2.0 last year.

I just got my new MBP finally! I'm just in the process of calibrating the battery (first initial charge). When its charged and I can turn it on, would you recommend reformatting the drive and freshly installing OSX? If so, would anyone be kind enough to be able to point me in the direction of useful instructions? (I have an idea, but dont want to mess it up).

So here is my question, I have lots of stuff on my Mac that I really want to keep, so it would be backup first. I would then like to do an Archive and Install Reformat but I believe this is not possible under Snow Leopard. What is my best choice to do a completely clean reinstall of Snow Leopard ?

I have bought a used Macbook Intel 2.2Ghz 250Gb with 2GB RAM running Snow Leopard. It didn't come with system discs. I have a similar Macbook with a 160Gb HD running 10.5,8 and I have swapped the HDs over. Both machines are running fine. I now wish to reinstall 10.5 on the 160GB HD but when I use my original 10.5.6 system discs it says that OSX cannot be run on this machine.
