I have a shared folder on Lion Server. The permissions for the folder are set to everyone can read & write. When I add files from another computer to the shared folder the file permissions are not set to read & write for everyone. Is there a setting I am missing on the server to make all files added over the network to have the same permissions as the folder?

I recently had to create a new user, copy all apps and files to same, and then reinstall MS Office 2004 for Mac. I use a mini, 2gig Ram, and Leopard (10.5.6)OS. All my old office files have become "read only" and I cann ot modify and save w/o renaming. Is there a "blanket" way to change the Permissions to "read & write" for all my Office files? Idid not see a similar item in the FAQ's......
Also, when I open an Office application, I get the following message: "An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library". How do I fix that?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a config file, /etc/my.cnf that has permissions set via the finder gui to have read/write for anyone that's an "admin". My user is an admin (turns out I'm the only user as well), but when I open this file (it's plain text) in text edit it gives me an error on save saying that I don't have permissions for the folder that it's in. I can, however, use nano via the terminal and modify the file without any issues. I don't want to set read/write permissions on /etc to everyone, so how do I make it so TextEdit (and thus other programs having the same problem) can write to that file?

i backed everything up on an external hard drive so i can keep it until i received my imac. now i have my imac, and when i try to transfer over the files to my imac, or another external hard drive, sometimes the copying stops and says something along the lines of "you do not have permission to copy this file"
so i guess some of my files got messed up, putting them in "Read only" mode.
i know i can go to "Get info" and then manually change it to "read and write" mode but honestly theres so many files it would take a lot of time.
is there a script, or an app i can run that could scan my whole external hard drive so it will go thru each file in their own specific folder and change the permissions to "read all write all" without me doing it manually one by one?

I downloaded NTFS-3G 2011.1.15 and installed and restarted my Mac but then got this error when OS started and I cant see my Windows external disk any more. I am not 100% sure if the format of this disk was FAT or NTFS.

hey all, this has been really frustrating for me today. i want to be able to write to an external HDD that's formatted in NTFS. today i find out it isn't possible to write to this file system on a Mac and that on FAT32 it is possible. however, FAT32 can't address files larger than 4GB so this hurts me a lot. are there any other file systems that'll allow me to read and write from a Mac? my goal was to use freeNAS to build a NAS with an old tower and connect my external hard drives to it, but if i can't write to them this may not be possible.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm buying an external hard drive to use as a backup for my MacBook but also as a network drive that all the computers connected to my router (Airport Extreme) can use. There are two MacBooks and two PCs that connect to the network. I only need my MacBook to be able to write to the hard drive but I need the two PCs to be able to access and use the files on the hard drive. I was going to get a 1TB external and give it two partitions. The first partition is going to be the Time Machine backup for my MacBook and the other will be accessed by all computers on the network. What format will the second partition need to be so that both MacBooks and both PCs can view and use the files? Also what external hard drive would you recommend?

When I downloaded an mp3 online, and tried to drag and drop it to itunes in order to import, it says "Attempting to copy to the disc Macintosh HD failed: You do not have enough access priveleges for this operation. I am the only admin on the computer, i have gone through music>itunes>Itunes music and made read/write for me on all three under "get info" when trying to import a CD it says "the song couldn't be converted, you don't have write access to your itunes media folder or a folder within it" I spotlighted "itunes media" and found nothing. Next I repaired disk permissions from disk utility, still the same problems.

I found a strange glitch with file permissions when accessing a network drive, on Lion. I am accessing my internal drive on my iMac over Wi-Fi from my MacBook. I am logged in under my user name. I notice that for every file on the remote drive (on my iMac), "staff" and "everyone" are ready only, but read & write access is reserved for "macports". Macports? It does not list my own name as having read & write permissions, and so I cannot save any file to this remote drive. When I access the drive locally on my iMac, the permissions appear correctly for the same files, i.e. my own name is listed as having read & write access. Is there some kind of glitch where the file permissions are misread when accessing a drive over the network?

There is now a file called "untitled" that appears to be a Logic Project file, however I cannot delete, open, rename, and move it anywhere. When I try to click and drag the file icon, it doesn't allow me to move it anywhere.
When right-click on the file, it pops up the window, but there are only a few options available. I went to "get info" and saw that the file permissions are "unknown". I've tried repairing disk permissions in the disk utility, however the file is still unaccessible.It's not a large file (only 578K), but it would still like to remove it.

I have the PIONEER DVR-104 Drive in my MDD Dual 1Ghz G4 that has stopped reading DVD's. It still reads CD's just fine and will write CD-R's just fine. To get arround the problem (I need to be able to atleast read DVD's) I've installed a plain DVD drive in bay 2. This problem existed before I upgraded to 10.2.4 so it was there under 10.2.3 as well. Toast and the Apple System Profiler recognize it as a DVR-104, the proper drive. Lets see what else can I tell you... We are using Apple branded media. When I do drop a DVD-R in the drive whether blank or written it trys to read it for about 30 sec then spits it back out.

I notice the security news that FireWire could be used to bypass your login password because it accesses your RAM.
That got me to thinking: Can you use FireWire to read/write the RAM of the 'puter next to you and could you use this "feature" to turn that RAM into a RAM disk for fast access?
I thought SL offered feature like Macfuse where I am able to read and write NTFS (Windows) format drives testing on my MacBook and I am only able to read.
