Why is time machine saying that it cannot restore a file due to access persmissions when all I'm trying to do is restore a single file for my one and only user on the same computer that created the backup? Shouldn't that just work?

How to restore a file from the Time Share volume of one mac to a different mac.Â
I have 2 machines: macbook pro & mac air both both running latest mountian lion. Each keeps its own time share volume on a network server. The two have some sync'd shares, but in general, they are not fully sync'd.Â
the macbook pro is in the shop for repair for a few days and I'd like to fetch some of it's files from its time machine backup onto the macair. I'm a little reluctant to simply fire up Time Machine on the mac air and respecify it's storage volume to be the macbook pro's volume. I'm concerned about internal configuration changes Time Machine might make to the mac air, including making changes that might cause it to have to do a full (not differential) back up when I reconfigure the mac air's Time Machine to use it's own backup volume after I'm done getting files from the macbook pro backup volume.Â
In addition to simply getting access to some of the files of the mac in the shop, I want to get the mac calendar from that machine and use it on the mac air. I understand that this may be somewhat trickier.

I recently used Migration Assistant to make my new machine like my old one via TM. Now, all the permissions on more or less everything are messed up, and I can't change anything without going into Get Info and adding myself. I do not want to do this every single time I want to update an Application, for example. How do I do this "globally"- give my administrator account Read/Write permission for all of the normal things?

Why am I being denied permission using sudo? It doesn't even prompt me for my password. And now after restarting, I get stuck on the blue loading screen.

I've tried using my Time Machine to reclaim it but as soon as i select Cloud Drive, Numbers folder, or user/Library/Mobile Documents i can't go back to any previous backups, my timeline tabs all show up in red. I tried following the Pondini instructions for restoring individual files but I must be doing something wrong. To restore the address book, he says "open finder window". No problem. Then "enter time machine then navigate to the backup in question". When I open time machine, it only wants to back up. I can't access any files from there. I can only access the files from the backup folder but then there is no "restore" button. How do I restore the address book that I backed up in time machine?

After hardware failure (read heads on HD gave out. AppleCare replacement of HD. Third party data recovery and reinstall on my new HD.) I connected new Ext HD for Time Machine, and Time Machine has corrupted my startup volume.Â
Took to the repair shop and they said the Time Machine preferences file was corrupted, which left all my system drive data in a read-only state after backup. They trashed the pref file, and reset the permissions/read-only flags on my startup volume.Â
1) How do I reset the file permissions myself? (so I can nuke my Time Machine backup, manually back everything up, and manually recreate my entire system drive?)
2) Do you think since the data recovery place (Apple Authorized BTW) rewrote all my original data to the new HD, some "random" corruptions were copied over? Or is this a problem with Time Machine? (Which is why I want to do a manual reinstall/restore.)

My Mac HD has been playing up for some time and today it finally decided to not work at all. This was after I had installed 10.7.3 yesterday. I booted from my OS Leopard CD and installed it on my second HD which is usually used for data storage. I did try to restore the Mac HD from my Time Machine backup but I kept getting errors and the computer (MacPro early 2008 model - 6gb ram, 300gb HD) kept rebooting. Â
So the computer now boots from the second HD and I have repaired the Mac HD and verified it but it still will not boot. How can I use Time Machine to restore the system to the now non-booting Mac HD? When I try, it wants to do a backup of the new booting second HD which doesn't have all of my apps, docs etc (which are all on the Mac HD still). After reading several postings (especially url...) I thought to understand how to restore my Calendars from Time Machine after creating a big mess using iCloud..So far so good:
1. Open Finder and select Go > Library - using the Alt key- (so the folder "Calendars" is shown)

long time Mac user (original 128 Mac!). Somehow, not sure what I did, the sent folder in my POP email got checked to delete after one day. My sent folder has emails dating back to 2004. So, when I got up this morning, I opened mail, looked for a previously sent email and realized that only the ones sent yesterday existed. I need to restore. Fortunately, I have a time machine backup. However, when I go to Time Machine, find the correct SENT folder and try to restore, it tells me I do not have access to the file. One of my co-workers is upgrading his old Mac Pro to a new iMac with a 256GB SSD and an internal 2TB ATA drive. He has a Time Machine backup to run the restore from, but his account is larger than the 256GB SSD. Ultimately he wants to keep his stuff on the 2TB drive and run the OS and his account on the SSD, but I couldn't think of a way to split that during the restore.

I had an issue with my HD on my Macbook Air. The genius bar wiped my HD clean and re-installed LION. When I got home, I tried to restore the MB Air from my most recent backup. I keep getting the error "The backup cannot be opened."If this is a password protected backup, you may have entered an incorrect password or the backup may be damaged".Â
I know that I must have entered the right PW since it let me in to the Backup drive. I am using a brand new macmini server with the G-technology 8TB G-Speed raid solution as my backup system. So right now I have a MacBook air that has NONE of my stuff on it and it won't let me restore it either

To cure some problems I reinstalled the iMac install DVD, erasing the hard drive, then installed 10.8.5 and it's working. I then entered to the time machine to the date when I still was using 10.8.5 not the dreaded 10.9.4. But the restore button won't come on and respond. I did all this to get out of 10.9.4. View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running a Intel Imac 2008 clean install SL then Lion upgrade, followed by Lion Server install.I have multiple home macs, and intnded the server as a way to monitor and restrict kids internet use.In short, it has changes/screwed up multiple programs, and complicated home sharing issues considerably. Mail on the server machine has permission problems (cannot send mail, unable to sign), Spotlight in mail is non-functioning, finder spotlight searches are inconsistent, etc.I want to revert to plain old Lion.
I have done disk utility/verify disk and verified/repaired permissions, and have 'fiddled' (i'm not an expert) in the keychain/certificates areas, but I think the best solution is a clean install of Lion. When I backup to TIme Machine, is there a way to pull a 'Lion' version of my disk image back, and just not upgrade to Server? I understand I can disable Server and turn off applications in Server, but it doesn't fix my buggy machine. My options are to back up my 250GB of music, 100GB of photos, 100GB of movies, etc on to external drives, and clean install and then reimport everything, but even that will probably mean I cant reinstall my single user licesnse of MS office, VMware fusion, etc that I didn't buy on the App store.

So by accident I deleted all my address contacts on my mac by accedeint. (I was trying to stop my Mac user account picture from changing all the time). I knew I had deleted them but didnt think anything of it. I came to text someone today and half my contacts have gone from my iPhone and my iPad . But i dont know how to get them back on to my address book via time machine. Â

I understand that in Snow Leopard it was necessary to go to the following folder in Finder "/users/username/library/application support/address book. start address book " - and restore that folder in TM. However, that folder does not exist in Lion. How do I restore contacts using TM?
