OS X :: Migrate Assistant Interrupted / "network Failure" Error Prompt

Dec 1, 2010

I'm new to mac and just got a new MBP. When I tried to transfer data from my iMac to it, the migrate assistant got interrupted by a network problem. After I fixed the network, the transfer just cannot be resumed: I hit the "continue" button a couple of times, and it always gave me the same "network failure" error prompt.

And it doesn't allow me to do any work during the long migration. I wonder if there are other easy way of transferring data. I know I can use FTP or SFTP, but just want to make sure if the frustration I had with migration assistant was not a misuse on my part.

Software :: How To Migrate Assistant And Firewire / Won't Connect Via Wireless Network

Nov 22, 2009

My wife and I have the newest MacBook Pros (well, mine is about a year old, but it's one of the "new" ones with the black keyboard and black trim around the screen).

I would like to migrate her profile from this, the older MBP, to her brand-new MBP, but am finding that it just won't connect via our wireless network.

I would like to give it a try with a firewire cable, but can't seem to get 100% agreement as to the one I need.

cannot get Migrate from PC to iMac working. The iMac can see shared folders on PC, but the PC cannot connect to the iMac.Both machines share wired router. I can ping from each machine to the other, the PC sees the iMac in the workgroup but cannot connect.

I need Migrate to bring over 4 Outlook Express folders (mailboxes) that were left out after two attempts by the apple store to migrate my doc's, photos and email. There is a utility called "Belkin Switch-to-Mac" on both machines.

Applications :: Migration Assistant: Can't Migrate FROM 10.4.11

Sep 9, 2010

The MacBook has no firewire port, so to migrate it tells me to use Ethernet. I've done that before without too many problems, so no worry. But this time it tells me to insert the disk that came with the new machine into the old machine and install "DVD or CD Sharing Setup" software. I have inserted both the CDs that came with the new machine into the old, but cannot find anything that gives me that software. There is no "Disc 1."

I would rather migrate than to copy the user account over, but have done that successfully before, too. (fyi, once you copy a user account into the new Macintosh HD > Users folder, you then go into Users (in Sys Prefs) and add that exact name that is on the folder. It will tell you it already exists and say 'OK.')

OS X :: How To Migrate A User Directory Without Migration Assistant

Nov 4, 2010

I recently did a clean install and now I am attempting to migrate user data to the new install. I have a Mac Pro with four internal drives. OS X is on the boot drive, of course, and the user home folder I'd like to transfer is on another internal drive. (This is because I had moved all user directories from the boot drive to a separate internal drive in the Mac Pro. A consultant advised me to do this to increase performance.)

I thought I'd be able to use Migration Assistant to simply migrate the user to the new install, but it appears you can only use MA with a Time Machine back-up or a disk with OS X installed.

So what's the best way to move this user back?

OS X Mavericks :: How To Get Migration Assistant To Successfully Migrate Between Two Desktop Machines

Jun 30, 2014

I spent 4 days trying to get OS X Migration Assistant to successfully migrate between two desktop machines, both running Mavericks 10.9.3.

The two machines were connected by an ethernet cable, and all migrations would fail after 16-24 hours, with the progress bar stalling out at "Less than one minute remaining".

Before every failed transfer, Migration Assistant would inaccurately show "157 KB selected" for transfer if the "Computer & Network Settings" option was checked, or "0 KB selected" for transfer if only the "Applications" or "Documents & Data" options were checked.

I finally realized that the migrations were failing because I was opening and clicking through Migration Assistant on both the source and target machines at around the same time.

The eventual solution was to open Migration Assistant on the source machine first, and click through as far as I could until the source machine was actively looking for other machines on the network.

As long as I waited until then to open Migration Assistant on the target machine, it would correctly calculate the size of the files to be transferred and the migration would succeed.

So, the order in which you open Migration Assistant seems to make a big difference: source first, then target.

My problem is solved, but only after several days of hassle, so I wanted to post this in case other people had a similar issue.

(I tried many suggested fixes that did not work, included reinstalling OS X on the target machine, running disk repair and fixing permissions on both source and target, changing file sharing on the source machine to include the whole drive, trying to migrate Applications and Documents & Data separately, turning off wifi before the transfer, etc.)

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Copying Files Between Hard Disks Interrupted By Error Code -36

Mar 18, 2012

This error probably indicates a hardware problem or some system malfunction. I usually try to find out what exactly went wrong to take measures to avoid the repetition of the same problem. Exchanging the HD and restoring the sytem may be the quicker solution, but I would miss an opportunity to reconfigure my system to make it more robust.

The system in question is a MacMini (Model A1347) with Os-X-Server 10.6.7. and 2 physical HDs: HD1 has 2 Partitions, the smaller for the server OS, the larger for the Shares (We use the MacMini only as a file server). HD2 is not used (was kept in reserve for cases like this).

That there may be a problem manifested itself first when the mounting of the shares on HD1 became suddenly slow (within 2-3 days) and eventually failed. I first tried to copy all the files from the shares on HD1 to HD2 before attempting any repair actions. Most of the files copied properly but a few failed with error (-36). Those few can be restored from backups, so there is no data loss. Remains the question, what went wrong?

It may be pure coincidence but just before the File-Server failed there was an attempt to upgrade a 3rd party software on one of the clients (17'' MacBook Pro / OS X 10.6.8) to a newer version. Could be that new version was part of the problem because the data files of this 3rd party software are stored on one of the shares on HD1 and the data file format has been changed between the versions. For obvious reasons I need to make sure that this data file conversion was not the cause of the problem?

1) first check the HD1 with a different tool than DiskUtility (It thinks the HD1 is in perfect shape), TechTool Pro or DiskWarrier comes to my mind, any reason to prefer one over the other?

2) Hopefully those tools can reliably test whether the HD1 is damaged or not. If it is the former the HD1 replacement option is the way to go and there is no more reason the 3rd party software may have been involved. However if HD1 is not damaged I'm left with the uncertainty of what exactly lead to the problem..?

3) Is there any check I should do before I just re-format the HD and re-install the OS and switch back to  an earlier version of the 3rd party software to be on the safe side?

Hardware :: Failure To Recognize Network?

May 9, 2008

I recently had my MacPro upgraded with the Airport Extreme N chip. When I purchased the system I chose not to get it because I never envisioned using it on a desktop. However, I recently relocated and the condo construction and location of the cable feed prevented me from using Ethernet as my connection.

The strength of the signal is only 1/2 of the one I get with my MacBook Pro. Also, while the MacBook Pro remembers my network and automatically connects to it when I turn it on, the MacPro does not and I must either leave it in Sleep mode or enter all of the parameters for my wireless security each time I turn it on.

I use WPA2 and AES on a DLink DIR-655 Wireless N Router. I have the SSID set to not broadcast. While I was thinking that might be the problem, I don't understand why it would work on the laptop and not the desktop. They are both running the latest version of Mac OS/X Leopard.

OS X Mavericks :: Migration Assistant Exits Without Error?

Sep 11, 2014

My main 3tb iMAC is in the shop getting a new fusion drive as it died.  I have to use one of my other iMacs temporarily.  This other iMac as a 1tb HD but its mostly empty.  I have a Time Machine backup on my NAS drive of my main iMac.  I want to copy some of my backup files from the NAS to the 1tb iMAC. But I am having issues trying to copy files.

Basically I launch Migration Assistant, it goes through the steps and I pick the user I want to migrate.  It start the process then says that the users files are too large for this iMac and so I have the option to go back and pick specific folders to copy.  I unclick enough folders so it fits on the 1tb iMAC, I click next and then the Migration Assistant just exits and I am returned to the login screen.

I see the problem on two different iMacs - the 2014 one with 1tb and an older 2011 iMac with 2tb.  No error, it just exits.

OS X Mavericks :: FileVault Encryption Failure / Error -69774

Dec 8, 2014

I used File Vault to do an drive encryption and the encryption process failed.

Now I receive the "do not enter" gray screen at startup and cannot load OS Mavericks,

and am essentially locked out of my computer since the encryption process failed.

I've tried holding "CMD+R" to do a disk repair. Disk was okay.

I've tried holding "CMD+R" to do a restore from Time Machine. Destination (main) disk is locked and will not take my password (which is correct).

I've tried holding "CMD+R" to do a clean install. Destination (main) disk is locked and will not take my password.

I have tried using Terminal command diskutil corestorage unlockVolume UUID -stdinpassphrase which returns: "Logical Volume successfully unlocked. Error: -69774: Couldn't bring the new Core Storage Logical Volume online"

So I am locked out. I cannot restore with Time Machine. I cannot do a clean install. I'm stumped.

It's a 2009 Mac Pro running 10.9.5 Mavericks.

I bought this mac last year and decided to put a windows partition on it. I decided the partition was way too small so I erased it and made a new one. This time when I went to make a partition on my hard drive it said the beta had expired. I looked deeper into this message and some sites said to put your clock was to before September of 2007. Doing so I now get this message. Bootcamp assistant cannot open. This version of Boot Camp Assistant is not supported in Mac OS X v10.5. Use Boot Camp Assistant 2.0, located in /Applications/Utilities/. Well first I don't have a boot camp 2.0. So I downloaded the combo pack to make sure my firmware and such was up to date which it was. I still get this error message.

MacBook Pro :: Migration Assistant Did Not Transfer Network Or Computer Settings As Expected?

Jun 25, 2012

Snow Leopard (10.6.8) became corrupted resulting in not being able to shut down my 1/2007 Intel Core 2 Duo MacBookPro and not being able to download numerous programs and updates. I backed-up my laptop, took it into the Apple Store where they wiped the hard disc clean and reloaded the OS. They suggested I use Migration Assistant to restore my backed up information to my laptop, but ALL of my settings from Desktop, to the Dock, to Finder, to screen savers, to Safari bookmarks, to all of my Mail inboxes, archives and smart email boxes, and to Documents and all of my files and their organization, to iTunes, to Address Book, to Calendar are GONE. Do I need to do some more formal kind of a restore from my back-up drive to recover/restore this information and "get my laptop back" or is it all lost?

Windows On Mac :: BootCamp Assistant Error After Upgrading Hard Drive

Jun 19, 2009

I have a 13" white macbook, which I had partitioned with Bootcamp. When I decided to upgrade to a 500 GB drive I didn't want to reinstall everything, so after ordering and installing my new harddrive, I used super duper to clone my mac volume onto the new drive. [URL]. It worked like a charm for the mac volume, but did not copy my windows volume. No problem, I figure, I will just run the boot camp assistant again, b/c I didn't have that much on that volume anyway. However when I booted up in my new 500 gb mac drive, the Boot Camp Assistant would not work and generated an error message stating. "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."

Only problem is, my drive was already formatted as an extended journaled volume. I erased it and reformatted and recloned from super duper just to double check, but still got the same error message. Then I tried to start from scratch, and erased the drive again and tried to install an operating system from the dvd. I got another error message saying that the hard drive could not be partitioned and that I needed to use disk utility to reformat the disk as a GUID partition. However I couldn't figure out how to do that, and couldn't find anything on the disk utility that said GUID. it took a call to mac support (thanks mark!) to figure it out. Thought I would post it here in case anyone else has the same problem. It turned out that the hard drive I'd ordered was somehow not set up the way as my old one.

The solution was:
1. boot from the mac os DVD
2. go into disk utility, select the new hard drive, and choose the partition tab
3. change the number of partitions from "current" to "1"
4. then the 'options' button becomes available, and you can go in and select to format as a GUID drive.
from that point on, I was able to proceed with installing Mac OS x, install all the software updates, and run the boot camp partition.

Once I had the hard drive partitioned properly I used Super Duper to clone my mac volume onto the new drive, and then used Winclone to clone the windows drive. for some reason the main site for winclone is down right now - two canoes - but I got a working copy here: [URL] none of the help info on two canoes was available yesterday or today either so I had a little trouble figuring out how to use it. (though others have said it's super easy...). I wasn't sure where to save the disk image, on a mac or windows volume and on my old or new drive. The way I ended up doing it (that worked) was:
1. open winclone, and in the 'image' tab, create an image and save it on the mac volume of the new hard drive. (I couldn't save it on the old drive b/c there wasn't enough room)
2. then, still in winclone, go to the 'restore' screen and restore from the mac volume of the internal hard drive to the windows volume.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Keep Getting Kernel Panic Error After TM Restore And Migration Assistant Won't Work

Feb 2, 2012

My computer broke down so I had a repaired and the original software was re-installed and it worked perfect. Whenever I restore from Time Machine, I get the kernel panic error. I go in to Time Machine and view my external hard drive and all my stuff is still there, except I noticed my applications are crossed out. At least the non-default ones. That may just be because they're not currently loaded.

Computer is a late 2011 MacBook Pro.  I burned 2 DVD's successfully (first time on this new machine) but when I tried to do another one it failed and I got a prompt that said the computer was not communicating with the drive.  I shut down, rebooted, tried again with the same result.  Called Applecare and they concluded that it was a hardware failure (2nd in 6 months) after trying all sorts of stuff.  On a hunch, I tried one more time and, guess what, it burned just fine. It may yet turn out to be a hardware problem after all but it sure "felt" like it was software related or else some kind of firmware glitch.  I am running 10.7.3.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

OS X Yosemite :: Why Setup Assistant And Migration Assistant Forcing To Copy Everything From Old Mac

Dec 2, 2014

I just bought a new Mac Mini (Late 2014, ships with Yosemite) to replace a defunct MacBook Pro (Late 2008, last ran 10.8.5).  I have a local administrative user account and some server and network data that I want to migrate from the latest Time Machine backup of the MacBook Pro to the Mini.  I don't want to copy anything else to the Mini.  Neither Setup Assistant nor Migration Assistant will let me deselect anything though.  All the check boxes are greyed out.  Clicking on them does not uncheck them.  This forces me to copy everything from the Time Machine backup to the Mini.  Then the Mini won't restart.   It won't even boot into safe mode.  It just gets stuck in a reboot-loop until I enter recovery mode, wipe the system drive, and reinstall Yosemite.

Mac mini (Late 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)
