Intel Mac :: Migrate From Pc To It Failure?
Mar 2, 2012
cannot get Migrate from PC to iMac working. The iMac can see shared folders on PC, but the PC cannot connect to the iMac.Both machines share wired router. I can ping from each machine to the other, the PC sees the iMac in the workgroup but cannot connect.Â
I need Migrate to bring over 4 Outlook Express folders (mailboxes) that were left out after two attempts by the apple store to migrate my doc's, photos and email. There is a utility called "Belkin Switch-to-Mac" on both machines.Â

I'm new to mac and just got a new MBP. When I tried to transfer data from my iMac to it, the migrate assistant got interrupted by a network problem. After I fixed the network, the transfer just cannot be resumed: I hit the "continue" button a couple of times, and it always gave me the same "network failure" error prompt.
And it doesn't allow me to do any work during the long migration. I wonder if there are other easy way of transferring data. I know I can use FTP or SFTP, but just want to make sure if the frustration I had with migration assistant was not a misuse on my part.

I have two hp laptops and a external hard drive that I would like to migrate to my new imac. Both laptops have itunes music on them that I would like to combine and there are a number of other files on each that I need. Is it possible to migrate multiple pcs and the external hard drive? If I combine more than one itunes library will they combine or will there be multiple music folders? What about duplicate music how do I remove or keep from having duplicates in my music folder?

I just bought an iMac and need to transfer files from my MacBook Pro. Question though, in the transfer are files permanently removed from the source computer or are the files copied from one computer to another with the source computer retaining the original files?

I'd like to migrate my old iPhoto Library from an external HD to my new iMac. I've copied the 'iPhoto Library' folder to my desktop, but am not sure what to do from there because I've got two library files (?), 'Library.iPhoto' and 'Library6.iPhoto' in the 'iPhoto Library' folder.Â
I've read some of the other discussions re. migrating libraries, but I'm afraid I'm confused! I've been mostly PC based for so long, I don't know all the dos and don'ts of using Mac... and don't want to mess with files and folders I'm not supposed to touch.Â

I have a new iMac with two disks- the SSD and the 1TB hard drive. Lion was loaded onto the SSD, so that's my start up drive. I need to migrate all the data from my old iMac (also has Lion) to the new one. When I run Migration Assistant, it thinks I want the old mac migrated , which of course, doesn't have enough space for all the data. I can't find any way to tell it to migrate to the 1TB hard drive.Â

I have a iMac with Leopard. It has Intel Core 2 Duo 3Ghz with 4G Ram. I would like to install Lion, but on the system requirement, I can read this sentence:Mac OS X 10.6..6 or later. What does it means? I should firstly migrate to 10.6.6 or 10.6.8 and then I can migrate to 10.7?Â
My goal was to reinstall the iMac from crash with the CD of Lion.

why i have to unplug the power cable from the back of my imac after every power failure at my home to get the imac to boot up. I've tried resetting the surge protecter and unplugging there. However, the only option is to unplug the cord from the back of the monitor/imac before it will boot up.Â

I know this is a fairly common subject matter but I have tried just about everything suggested but with no success. detailed below are my findings, I was wondering if anyone better qualified than me could suggest a diagnosis?
What does it do?
I hear the fans and hard drive and see the white/grey boot screen with the apple logo and spinning cog. The cog will spin for anything from 5 - 30 seconds before freezing. Some disk activity will continue for a short time afterwards before everything grinds to a halt?

i need some advice on what to do next, my Intel 24" iMac has failed, diagnosed as a faulty logic board by the Apple Genius. I purchased the iMac in Dec 07, and I deliberately did not purchase the extended warranty as this is a desktop unit, that in 20 months of ownership has never been moved, dropped or transported anywhere.
I have no option than to either pay for the repair - 380 or sell on eBay for spares...!
I informed Apple about the Sale of Goods Act, and they have put the owness on me to prove it was faulty from date of purchase...! They have informed me that I need to visit an Apple authorised service centre where they will run a test and produce a report, which will determine if the fault was there in the first 6 months of ownership.

When my iMac comes out of sleep (overnight), I get a "backup failure" error as the machine tries to do a backup. I try performing a backup manually and it fails as well. I tried removing the drive to have it detect again and I get another error that it cannot perform the ejection process, because it may be in use. I have to force quit/eject. After reattaching the drive, the backup performs with no problems.

Earlier today I had the LED Panel replaced in my 27" iMac (Applecare Warranty) due to a screen discoloration that had appeared around the Optical Disk area of the screen. The replacement LED has resolved that issue. However, (and I don't know if this is due to the new LED installation) I now find that I cannot 'color calibrate' the new screen. On opening Display Preferences/Color, there are three display profiles listed;
• iMac
• iMac 27 Calibrated
• My 27 iMac Calibrated.Â
On selecting any of the above and clicking the 'Open Profile' button - I'm given this message; Unable to determine file format. The file "/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays/iMac-00000610-0000-9CB5-0000-000004272D40 .icc" does not appear to be compressed or encoded. It is advised that you obtain further information about the contents of this file from the sender or provider of the file.    On selecting the 'Calibrate' button - I'm given the message; Can not calibrate the display The factory profile for the display could not be found. Â

I'm trying to disconnect the time machine from my airport extreme and reconnect my external hard drive and I'm not having any success. After I installed the Airport Extreme and tried to connect (the once SUCCESSFULLY direct connected hard drive), the hard drive to the Airport - I was getting failure messages that the device was full) How can I re-point my time machine to a directly connected external hard drive? It's got to be simple - but I've exhausted my options I think.

I've tried six times to burn 290 photos, exported from iPhoto, to a RW DVD. The pictures export OK, the transfer to the DVD seems to go OK but it's when the disc is being verified that the problem occurs. It gets to somewhere around 25% verified then returns the message below and ejects the disc.
I only seem to have two burn settings:Â Max (2.4x) and 2.4x - I've tried both and failed.
As a test, I sent a mere 10 photos to a disc and that worked. Then I tried 100 to a new disc and it failed again. But the discs' capacity is 4.6 Gb.
In the past I've successfully burned several hundred photos onto many discs from the same manufacturer.
I'm not sure what's going on. Is it possible that the disc burner on my iMac is broken.

I'm running Snow Leopard on an Intel iMac, everything up to date, and Disk Utility finds no error on any of the drives. I have a 1 TB external drive connected to USB (bus powered, with a power USB connection to a powered hub, so it has more than enough power). Time Machine fails with a totally unhelpful message that the backup could not be created because a folder could not be created. The external drive has 318 GB used, 481 GB available, so it's not disk space. Yesterday I repartitioned the external drive using the GUID partition scheme, creating a 750 GB Mac extended journaled partition "Time 1GB Tosh" just for Time Machine. I've been through the Time Machine Troubleshooting FAQs

In a few days, I will migrate from a three-year old MBP to a new one. I have done this many times on PCs, but this will be the first time I migrate on a Mac. How do I move programs, specifically Fusion and Things, from one Mac to another? Do I need to "reinstall"? Are they somehow registered to the hardware?

Is anyone aware of a way to migrate files/folders from an AFP share on a Windows 2003 server to an SMB share on the same server?
This has been a thorn in my side for almost a year. Nobody seems to have an answer, so I've tried my own thing:
In the AFP shares, which is legacy from OS9, the OSX 10.4 Macs can see the files properly. But, if they try to use them in an SMB share, to the same location on the same server, the special attributes of the files are gone. All of the files look like they are broken, etc.
I've tried to copy the files from the AFP share, through an OSX machine, to an SMB share on the same server and this does work, but the number of files, and levels of folders, seems to choke the copy and the speed is brutal, even on Gb. They have 800GB in 650K+ files. I tried the copy in the GUI and from the terminal. It would work for a while and then choke on various files for various reasons.
As I said, this has been an impossible task. There is no information on the Internets. Someone out there must have gone through this.

I finally took the plunge and ordered a MacPro quad 2.66. I am waiting for it, and in the meantime I might sell my Dual g5 1.8. The problem is that like this I could not transfer the files from one mac to the other. Second problem is that I run my machines as root in order not to have to deal with any security question (I know, it is a bit reckless, but knowing nothing about unix I started like that with the G5 5 years ago...), and I see that everything is in hidden files/directories that cannot be accessed easily (I thought I could enter in the new machine as root and I could access the root user data on the other disk, but it doesn't work, I tried on another machine).
Is there any clean solution that allows to move one root user from one disk, installed on the Pro, to the boot disk. Otherwise, any unclean (i.e. scripts etc)?

I recently purchased a new HD for my Macbook and installed it, along with a clean install of the OS. I put my old HD into an external enclosure and can connect it via USB. Is it possible to selectively migrate certain information from my old HD to the new? Let me be more specific here, I only want to migrate my Safari, Firefox, Mail, Stickies, iCal, iTunes, Adium, and MS Office settings, that's it, nothing else. Is this possible via Migration assistant? Do I have to use a 3rd party app? Is it possible at all?

I am doing a clean install of lion from the recovery HD, is it best to migrate the data back via TM back up, or clone? I don't have any programs that i don't a have disc for, and all i want to migrate is itunes, mail, and pic files etc. I have seen where migrating when you install is better than migrating later, so i want to be sure i have a clean clone, or back up, to migrate from. I also failed to write zero's over SL when i did a clean install for Lion, so it was not so clean. So i guess my question is just, clone, or TM back for migration?Â
