I've found the New User that has been created on my MacAir but none of my passwords will open it to transfer my data into my regular User Account. What can I do? I've tried migrating a couple of times and I still can't open the account.

The MacBook has no firewire port, so to migrate it tells me to use Ethernet. I've done that before without too many problems, so no worry. But this time it tells me to insert the disk that came with the new machine into the old machine and install "DVD or CD Sharing Setup" software. I have inserted both the CDs that came with the new machine into the old, but cannot find anything that gives me that software. There is no "Disc 1."
I would rather migrate than to copy the user account over, but have done that successfully before, too. (fyi, once you copy a user account into the new Macintosh HD > Users folder, you then go into Users (in Sys Prefs) and add that exact name that is on the folder. It will tell you it already exists and say 'OK.')

I recently did a clean install and now I am attempting to migrate user data to the new install. I have a Mac Pro with four internal drives. OS X is on the boot drive, of course, and the user home folder I'd like to transfer is on another internal drive. (This is because I had moved all user directories from the boot drive to a separate internal drive in the Mac Pro. A consultant advised me to do this to increase performance.)
I thought I'd be able to use Migration Assistant to simply migrate the user to the new install, but it appears you can only use MA with a Time Machine back-up or a disk with OS X installed.
So what's the best way to move this user back?

I spent 4 days trying to get OS X Migration Assistant to successfully migrate between two desktop machines, both running Mavericks 10.9.3.Â
The two machines were connected by an ethernet cable, and all migrations would fail after 16-24 hours, with the progress bar stalling out at "Less than one minute remaining".Â
Before every failed transfer, Migration Assistant would inaccurately show "157 KB selected" for transfer if the "Computer & Network Settings" option was checked, or "0 KB selected" for transfer if only the "Applications" or "Documents & Data" options were checked.Â
I finally realized that the migrations were failing because I was opening and clicking through Migration Assistant on both the source and target machines at around the same time.Â
The eventual solution was to open Migration Assistant on the source machine first, and click through as far as I could until the source machine was actively looking for other machines on the network.Â
As long as I waited until then to open Migration Assistant on the target machine, it would correctly calculate the size of the files to be transferred and the migration would succeed.Â
So, the order in which you open Migration Assistant seems to make a big difference: source first, then target.Â
My problem is solved, but only after several days of hassle, so I wanted to post this in case other people had a similar issue.Â
(I tried many suggested fixes that did not work, included reinstalling OS X on the target machine, running disk repair and fixing permissions on both source and target, changing file sharing on the source machine to include the whole drive, trying to migrate Applications and Documents & Data separately, turning off wifi before the transfer, etc.)

I tried using the migration assistant to transfer files (mainly pictures and word documents) from my old windows xp machine to my new macbook pro after the initial account setup, but I cannot find them. I know they are on the computer because of the decrease in free hard drive space. I had read on the internet that it may have created another user account and put the files there, but when I check in the users and groups, the only other account it shows is the guest, which I had had disabled. I would like to find out where the files are, and how I may be able to get them.

I have a 15Gb boot camp partition on my 80Gb macbook hard drive (its the 2006 intel one and I haven't upgraded it because I keep everything on an external HD). I need to move everything over to my macbook pro which has a 250Gb HD.
I was wondering if Migration assistant will move everything (including XP) onto the new macbook pro (and if so, what size will the partition be) or if it will just leave the XP bit untouched as it isn't part of the mac?
I only use the XP bit for playing some older games that I absolutely love (Rome Total War, The Sims 2) and in case of any incompatibility problems, so if need be I can just create a new XP partition on the new Pro. However I would like to keep my saved games, so is there a way of migrating the windows partition as well?

My company has one mac user with a Macbook Air, we have a Windows 2008 r2 domain.I'm wondering if it is worth joining him to the domain, what benefits are there for a mac user? We use Exchange 2007 and change our passwords every 90 days. One concern is when the user is out of the office the cached password can become out of sync with the domain password.

I just installed Lion 10.7.4 named my computer "fx6800". Then I joined my Windows 2003 Server domain with no problems. After that I could not log on to domain with one of my windows 7 machines because it had the same computer ID. Ok no problem I re joined the domain and re binded with the Win 7 machine and then un binded my Mac Lion machine then re-binded with a different computer ID. No problem both machines can log on to AD with separate computer accounts. Then I notice when I opened terminal it was showing the old computer ID. No problem I fixed it With sudo scutil --set HostName "new host name". Â
Then when I go to select file sharing in the description to the right under File Sharing On: it shows the path to tha machine is fx6800.domainname.local which is the original computer ID. Also when I select remote login and I believe it shows username@fx6800.domainname.local. I have searched for 2 days and have not come up with anything. I am sure if I reinstall everything it should fix it but I would like to save the time.

If I migrate my W7 machine to my Mac mini, will Windows make me reactivate the license? Is that even a big deal? If I use the ethernet cable option, will I need just the regular ethernet cable or a crossover cable?

I'm trying to install Windows 7 and can't get the boot camp assistant to partition my drive. The drive in question is 500GB with over 200GB free space. I want a Windows partition of 35-40GB.On first attempt I kept getting the cannot move files error when trying to partition. I read up on the error online, and most people suggested issues with parallels or needing to use idefrag. I had parallels on my machine at one point, but am not sure if there are any problem folders still hiding somewhere. Any tips on that part?I ran idefrag overnight last night. When I booted the machine up this morning, I launched it again to verify that the disk was defraged. Boot camp still doesn't want to play.

I was attempting to use Migration Assistant to move files from my wife's old PC (Windows 7) to her MacBook Pro, which uses Lion. The first connection went fairly smoothly, but we were connecting over wifi so it moved very very very slowly. Also, I had neglected to turn off Windows update and that ended up crashing the transfer. I tried to restart the transfer today (after shutting down Windows Update, Firewall, and other stuff I could think of), but now the two computers won't speak to each other. Both computers show up as being on the network.Â

I have a new MBP and I'd like to migrate some of my account from my old Mac running Leopard. When I run Migration Assistant on the MBP it can seem to find the old Mac. They are connected via ethernet and a modem/router and I am able to see and login to the old Mac via Network Folder on the MBP.Â
Is it possible to use Migration Assistant in this way. What alternatives do I have, obviously doing a TIme Machine isn't an option being Leopard on the old Mac. I could manual take Mail folde, iTunes folder r and Safari bookmarks and forget the rest but figured there's a way to get Migration Assistant to do this.

Set up my 21.5" iMac last night, set up a new user "Rory" - then downloaded Migration Assistant on my PC to transfer files, music, pics, docs and my iMac has created "Rory1" since I've discovered I should've transfered docs across BEFORE I set up an initial user!Â
The only thing I'd set up on my original "Rory" mac account was downloading Flash Player and installing my email to 'Mail' - so I've hardly done a lot of configs.Â
Can I just delete the original "Rory" profile and use the "Rory1" profile that the Mac set up? ( I realise the Mac has done this because my old Windows PC user name was obviously called "Rory" as well).Â
Or, is it easier to try and get the files (transfered from the PC under 'Rory1') to the original Mac profile of "Rory".Â
It's only 12 hours since I first went to set the my Mac up so as I said, I'm hardly in that much of a pickle yet - am I?!Â
