IMac :: Transfer Files To Mb - Setup Assistant To Migrate?
Dec 17, 2010
I have an iMac Intel Core2duo, 10.4.11 and I've just got a white macbook 10.6 which has a firewire slot. I have no idea how to transfer files from my iMac to the mb - can you help, please? I have not yet started the mb, in case I can use the setup assistant to migrate files.
so I'd be glad if someone can tell me [a] HOW to transfer files, [b] HOW to transfer iPhoto, [c] HOW to transfer iTunes and if I need to buy a cable, then what to look for.
I tried using the migration assistant to transfer files (mainly pictures and word documents) from my old windows xp machine to my new macbook pro after the initial account setup, but I cannot find them. I know they are on the computer because of the decrease in free hard drive space. I had read on the internet that it may have created another user account and put the files there, but when I check in the users and groups, the only other account it shows is the guest, which I had had disabled. I would like to find out where the files are, and how I may be able to get them.

If i have 2 macbooks and want to copy one itunes library and iphoto library to the other macbook do i just use migration assistant (or whatever its called).. I want to just COPY not transfer and erase off the old one.. So i want to be bale to transfer it but still be able to play music on the old computer.. so i guess what im getting at is when using migration assistant does it transfer the files, or just copy and transfer?
I will be buying a new White MacBook soon. I want to share files between the new MacBook and my iMac (first gen. aluminum). Will the files I transfer from my iMac stay on my iMac once I transfer them? Migration Assistant seems to be the easiest way to transfer files from one Mac to another Mac from what I read from searching this forum. Also, I read in some threads that transfered files are sometimes hard to find on the new computer.
After running Migration Assistant from my 2006 Macbook to my shiny new Macbook Pro, the program told me 'Some files from "TrajanPro-Bold.otf" could not be transferred.'
I have tried to transfer my file from my old MacBook Pro on to my iMac using firewire. Did not managed to transfer everything across such as contacts and all my other important files. However, all the applications were transferred.
I have tried using the migration assistant. It will not go beyond my selecting a migration method - From another Mac. Nor am I able to use the system preferences file sharing options outlined on apple support. I am not permitted to select the internet sharing as instructed in step 3 (in issues with migration section)... so cannot proceed from there. Using the target option to transfer files isn't working either.
When I installed Lion to my current macbook pro I didn't relise there was a new timevault. I am unable to disable the legacy version as more disc space than I have available is required. Will I be able to start fresh WITHOUT timevault when I migrate to my new Air? Or will the legacy timevault transfer.
When i used the migration assistant to transfer my files from my pc to mac, it seems i could not find any of my files. it said it transferred successfully, but nothing shows up on my mac. I did it twice? what else do i need to do?
I just bought a new Mac Mini (Late 2014, ships with Yosemite) to replace a defunct MacBook Pro (Late 2008, last ran 10.8.5). I have a local administrative user account and some server and network data that I want to migrate from the latest Time Machine backup of the MacBook Pro to the Mini. I don't want to copy anything else to the Mini. Neither Setup Assistant nor Migration Assistant will let me deselect anything though. All the check boxes are greyed out. Clicking on them does not uncheck them. This forces me to copy everything from the Time Machine backup to the Mini. Then the Mini won't restart.  It won't even boot into safe mode. It just gets stuck in a reboot-loop until I enter recovery mode, wipe the system drive, and reinstall Yosemite.Â

IF I only have 1 Mac with data and setting that I do not want to loose, can I use a hard drive to migrate too data and setting until my Mac is for matted and ready to be re-loaded ? Whats the closest migration benefits I could get having 1 mac?
I wish to migrate from a MacPro 2009 to a newer MacPro but keep the original monitor. Can I operate Migration Assistant with only one screen? If one screen can be used, to which computer should it be connected?
I just purchased a new MacBook Pro as an upgrade from my MacBook Black Intel Core Duo. Is it better to set-up the new computer with my old files by connecting a FireWire between both computers or should I simply hook up my external hard drive with all my Time Machine Back-ups as the source for the new info?
I set up my new air and now want to transfer my info from my macbook pro and I seem to have missed the boat and want to go back and do it . the computers are in different names with diff. passwords.
I am trying to do a command line / automated installation of Lion. I would like to know how to restore InstallESD.dmg or OSInstall.mpkg to a blank partition without the Install assistant. I would also like to know how to bypass the setup assistant after reboot.
The Mini Has Some Great Software On it, Could i Use Migration Assistant To Transfer The Programs To My iMac Without Losing My Data On My iMac? Or is There Any Other Way?
I just purchased a new macbook and am attempting to transfer files using migration assistant. However, migration assistant on my ibook says that it will only work in transferring files to the ibook not from the ibook.
Eagerly awaiting my ship date for a new iMac (having been burned by two models with screen problems at the end of last year... another story). But I face three choices when it arrives to replace my trusty MB.
1. Use Migration Assistant to bring over apps, files, my library or everything. 2. Restore from my most recent Time Machine backup. 3. Manually re-install my apps and simply move across my files and folders.
Does anyone know whether there's any benefit to the "cleaner" option 3? Is there any difference between 1 and 2? I feel instinctively that my prinstine Snow Leopard-powered iMac would be better off for the minimalist option, but if there are no concrete advantages, I'll let Time Machine take the strain.
The MacBook has no firewire port, so to migrate it tells me to use Ethernet. I've done that before without too many problems, so no worry. But this time it tells me to insert the disk that came with the new machine into the old machine and install "DVD or CD Sharing Setup" software. I have inserted both the CDs that came with the new machine into the old, but cannot find anything that gives me that software. There is no "Disc 1."
I would rather migrate than to copy the user account over, but have done that successfully before, too. (fyi, once you copy a user account into the new Macintosh HD > Users folder, you then go into Users (in Sys Prefs) and add that exact name that is on the folder. It will tell you it already exists and say 'OK.')
I recently did a clean install and now I am attempting to migrate user data to the new install. I have a Mac Pro with four internal drives. OS X is on the boot drive, of course, and the user home folder I'd like to transfer is on another internal drive. (This is because I had moved all user directories from the boot drive to a separate internal drive in the Mac Pro. A consultant advised me to do this to increase performance.)
I thought I'd be able to use Migration Assistant to simply migrate the user to the new install, but it appears you can only use MA with a Time Machine back-up or a disk with OS X installed.
I tried to use the "migration assistant" to migrate data form my old MBP to my new MBP. Both with Lion.it just clonated the old MBP into the new one (the main user), wich replaced some new apps (ilife, and others) with the old vervions tha were im the old MBP.I tried to erase the Macintosh HD, reinstall Lion from scratch but it happened again. What am I loosing during the process?

My wife and I have the newest MacBook Pros (well, mine is about a year old, but it's one of the "new" ones with the black keyboard and black trim around the screen).
I would like to migrate her profile from this, the older MBP, to her brand-new MBP, but am finding that it just won't connect via our wireless network.
I would like to give it a try with a firewire cable, but can't seem to get 100% agreement as to the one I need.
I spent 4 days trying to get OS X Migration Assistant to successfully migrate between two desktop machines, both running Mavericks 10.9.3.Â
The two machines were connected by an ethernet cable, and all migrations would fail after 16-24 hours, with the progress bar stalling out at "Less than one minute remaining".Â
Before every failed transfer, Migration Assistant would inaccurately show "157 KB selected" for transfer if the "Computer & Network Settings" option was checked, or "0 KB selected" for transfer if only the "Applications" or "Documents & Data" options were checked.Â
I finally realized that the migrations were failing because I was opening and clicking through Migration Assistant on both the source and target machines at around the same time.Â
The eventual solution was to open Migration Assistant on the source machine first, and click through as far as I could until the source machine was actively looking for other machines on the network.Â
As long as I waited until then to open Migration Assistant on the target machine, it would correctly calculate the size of the files to be transferred and the migration would succeed.Â
So, the order in which you open Migration Assistant seems to make a big difference: source first, then target.Â
My problem is solved, but only after several days of hassle, so I wanted to post this in case other people had a similar issue.Â
(I tried many suggested fixes that did not work, included reinstalling OS X on the target machine, running disk repair and fixing permissions on both source and target, changing file sharing on the source machine to include the whole drive, trying to migrate Applications and Documents & Data separately, turning off wifi before the transfer, etc.)
My old MBP has a 320gb HD, my new iMac has a 500gb HD. What I am thinking is to create a partition on my new HD for 320gb and leave the remainder 180gb alone. Can I do this and is it possible? My new iMac has snow leopard and my old MBP is running leopard. Will this cause problems?
have used migration assistant to transfer music and photo files from my mbp to imac - used network not firewire - all seamed to work - said it was complete - now cannot seam to find the files on the imac - was i a bit too hopeful that they would just pop in to iphoto and itunes? could someone let me know where they will be?
I've been trying to migrate data to a new RAID setup, but have been running into the error code 36 issue where Mac created invisible files are killing the file transfers. At any rate, I tried about three different directory cleanup utilities and for the most part got almost all the data to move. Now I'm onto the last bit which was giving me permissions errors as well.I used Batchmod to make everything read write and I ALSO CLEARED THE XTARS. Worked like a charm and everthing transfered. HOWEVER. Killing the extened attributes of the files turned them all into Executible files with no program ownership. BTW, there are font files so there are hundreds of them. Is there anyway to re-assign them or get some of the attributes back?Â
I'm transferring files from my MacBook Pro to the new iMac. I decide to use the Migration Assistant and proceed to connect both machines using the USB port. All looked nice in the beginning and the bar tab status started to fulfill indicate the advance and hours to finish. Since yesterday in both screens indicate "3 hours and 53 minutes remaining" and don't go forward. Looks like the process freeze.
I launched the Boot Camp Assistant 2.0 on my iMac OS X v10.5. I was hoping to install Windows XP Professional with Built-in Service Pack 3. However, when I tried to partition the disk (32 GB on Windows), a message came up, saying "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved." It states some directions underneath, but, as I am new to Boot Camp and Mac, I don't know what to do and how to do. Please help!
