MacBook Pro :: Randomly Started Freezing Up?

Apr 4, 2012

I don't get any spinning wheel of death or anything it just freezes & won't do a thing but the mouse still moves?! I'm having to turn it off at the wall 3 or 4 times a day which I'm sure can't be good for it but I don't understand what's caused it to start, the only thing iv installed lately was adobe reader but it does seem to occur more when I'm using an Internet application (either safari or connecting for software updates). Iv just sat for over an hour on logic with all manner of plugins going off without any issue

MacBook Pro :: Started Freezing And Making Alarm Sounds

Jun 27, 2014

I have had some issues with my macbook pro lately: A few weeks ago, my Macbook started freezing and making alarm sounds. I didn't do anything about it because it happened only a few times per week.

Suddenly it happened 4 or 5 times in a row, and after x times my Macbook wouldn't go past the grey start-up screen (Apple logo loading). So I was unable to login. I solved the ''issue'' by erasing the disk. My Macbook worked again, but all data was gone. The freezing issue was gone as well.  But 2 days ago, it started.. again. And today, my Macbook suddenly crashed/shut down. Now, I am not even able to start my macbook. It doesn't show anything, if I press the power button, nothing happens.

I did a SMC reset, and my Macbook worked, but only for 15 minutes. It just happened again. Something is clearly wrong and I don't know what. my Macbook instanly freezed when I connected the power cord. And I think the power cord is broken, last few days it barely charged the Macbook.

IMac :: Started Freezing Randomly ?

Dec 8, 2010

I purchased a 24" iMac in fall of '07 and up until have had no problems at all. Let me describe the problems I'm having now and maybe someone can tell me what to do to remedy them.

A couple weeks ago it started freezing randomly. The mouse will switch to the beach ball and just spins endlessly. I can move it around but can't really do anything other than that. I have to do a hard reset to get it back to normal. Sometimes a couple programs are open, and sometimes none. It seems like it happens often when I quick switch from one user to another. It will switch, work for awhile, then freeze.

Now, no big deal, annoying, but whatever. But, the other day after doing a hard reset it revolted into a white screen with a flashing folder with a question mark. I did some research and found that I needed to repair the startup disc using the snow leopard disc. I did that and it allowed me to boot it back up normaly but didn't really solve the freeze up issue.

So, that just happened again, so I'll have to boot it up with the disc again and repair the startup disc when I get a chance. It's really beyond frustrating now.

I have repaired all permissions, updated all firmware, made sure the drive isn't full, pretty much everything short of backing up and wiping the drive and reinstalling the OS. Is that what I need ro do now? I mean, I know I need to, but is there something I can do to remedy until I can get around to doing that?

Intel Mac ::Started Freezing When Connecting To TV

May 30, 2012

I've had an iMac (late 2006) connected to a TV via mini DVI to HDMI for a while now, but today it's stopped working. The Apple menu wasn't visible on the TV and after changing the display settings froze. If I keep the HDMI cable in (even if the TV is turned off) the Mac freezes when it get's to the desktop view and jumbles the image with squares all over. If I take the cable out, it boots up fine. Putting the cable in then goes back to the original problem. I've searched around and tried deleting the com.apple.displays(2) file from ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost but no luck.

Applications :: Installed Camino - Started Freezing Up?

Jan 30, 2010

I was wondering about that one web browser, Camino. I installed it, but about a day or two after installation, it started freezing up, and the beach ball started showing up. It wasn't only Camino, but all of my web browsing applications started acting up. Opera and Safari were both affected by the beach ball, and my internet connections got really slow. So, stuff like Facebook and Youtube started bugging up. I deleted Camino, and some of those problems are gone now. But, I want to know, what did Camino do?

OS X Mavericks :: MacBook Pro Freezing While Browsing Internet?

Jun 30, 2014

Almost daily, I will be in the middle of browsing the internet and pages will just stop loading. Following this, any already-opened application I click on will freeze, including Finder. If I try to open any new applications, the icon will bounce over and over in the Dock but never open. If I close my web browser and try to reopen it, it tells me that there is already a copy of the browser running and I cannot open another one. The only way to remedy this I have found is to hold down the power button and shut off the computer. Once I turn the computer back on, everything runs normally. I originally though it may have been my web browser (Google Chrome) so I recently switched to Firefox, and the problem still persists. It is extremely annoying.

Why my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) has suddenly began randomly freezing up?All working great since I got it but recently I am having a consistent problem with it ceasing up. OS X Mavericks :: All Applications Are Freezing On Print

Sep 8, 2014

I get as far as File -> Print and get nothing but the spinning ball. This is happening in Pages, Numbers, and Mail -- the only three programs I've tried to print out of this morning. This is happening on just one computer. I can print the same files to the same printers from a different computer, so that should rule out file and printer problems.

I was able to print without problems over the weekend. I updated software on this computer last night, but I think it was only updates to programs like Pages, Numbers, and Safari, not operating system updates. I know Mail did not have an update. I did not have to reboot after updating. In addition, I've been having problems with Time Machine being stuck in Preparing status. I'm just reporting that in case it happens to be related, though I don't see how it would be. Because of the Time Machine problems, I shut down the machine last night after the updates, unplugged the Time Machine, plugged the Time Machine back in after waiting 10-15 seconds, and turned the computer back on.

I recently bought a 2014 iMac (21.5) inch 16GB machine. I'm going batty with it randomly freezing (beach ball) once every 2-4 days for no apparent reason. I've even looked at console logs and can't figure out. I've resetted SMC/PV(whatever), even reinstalled Mavericks (using a clean bootable drive). We use the iMac for two main purposes: Plex Media streaming (once a day really) and we use Juniper VPN to connect to our corporate network (which explains why you see juniper there)

OS X Mavericks :: File Freezing Entire System

Sep 9, 2014

Yesterday I was using a program that was creating a disk image file on my second hard disk. The application froze and crashed, leaving a tiny img file. Whenever I try to delete this file (through finder, or command line) or the machine tries to index/backup the file etc the whole computer freezes and I have to do a hard shutdown.

I have tried repairing the disk but disk utility says there is nothing wrong. I also tried mounting it on another machine via firewire, the exact same thing happened, the second machine froze up when I tried to delete the file.

MacBook Pro :: MAGSAFE Started Getting Hot

Jan 16, 2008

Like many of you, my magsafe finally started getting hot enough to make popcorn. Where I would have gone out and bought another, a simple dead short was too easy of a repair.... and I can use that $80 for other Apple goodies. I might as well get something out of my electronics degree. I decided to take pics to share. Since I seem to take pics of things people like these days, I've watermarked them to avoid any *more* theft of images. Apologies in advance for the watermarks. I would have written this as a DIY, but I determined if you couldn't get the jist from the pics, you shouldn't be attempting it. (Self solving problem) Basically what happens is that the outer shielding breaks FIRST from the flexxing of the cable. Once the outer shielding breaks the wire loses all it's structural integrity and it's a very short time before the inner wire starts poking through and creating small dead shorts between the + and - voltage of the two. This is why some days it is blisteringly hot and some days it is not. There are only small strands of the inner wire poking through and each time they make contact they burn off, creating a very hot wire, but one that seems to fix itself or only randomly get hot. If you continue to use the adapter in this situation you WILL end up with a fire that can threaten your book, your home, and your life.

At this point in the life of the wire it is in critical. The inner wire is breaching the jacket and the outer wire has nearly broken in half. The effects are a very poor connection on the negative shielding which creates heat by lack of ability to properly transfer energy. The heat warms up the already damaged inner jacket and the next thing you know.... you are here complaining about your Magsafe almost burning your leg off. With a little skill, you can fix this issue and save $80. The process took me 45 minutes and cost me NOTHING. My adapter is like new and will last me another year before I have to do it again. Inevitably by design, all Magsafe's will fail. I don't know about you, but I have better things to do with my $80, so once a year I don't mind making this repair. If you buy a new Magsafe it WILL fail again. The revision of a SLIGHTLY larger rubber grommet is a horrible fix with minimal results.

OS X :: MacBook Started Get Extremely Hot - Unresponsive

Sep 20, 2009

I was using my Macbook as usual last night, when some of the programs froze and the laptop started to get extremely hot. I tried to quit out of them but they were unresponsive, and unsure of what to do about it closed the lid and let it sleep and cool off. This morning I have tried to close the programs again with no success, so I hit the power button to restart the laptop. Now it doesn't boot, a folder appears on a gray background with a question mark in it. It wont boot to windows either, just sits on a gray screen. Can anyone help? What do I do? I'm not brilliant with computers, but I don't think I had done anything to crash the laptop. I had upgraded to Snow Leopard earlier on though, and not had any issues until then.

MacBook Pro :: Started Getting The Blinking Folder On Startup

Jan 3, 2011

So I kinda want to explain my saga of my (late 2009) Macbook Pro.

I got the first generation of the MBP shortly after it came out.... I actually purchased it on Black Friday.

Anyhoo-
-The specs:
-15" Glossy Screen
-2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Due
-2 GB 1064 MHz DDR3
-NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
-Toshiba 250gb HDD
(So as you can see, pretty basic machine.)

Anyway, I'd only had the computer a few months when I started getting the blinking folder on startup. I brought it in, and they verified the HDD was going bad, so they gave me a new HDD. About a month later, I had the same problem happen again. The "Genius" I talked to said it was probably my Logic Board, so they replaced that. However, after getting my computer back from the shop, on my first startup, I got the blinking folder. So I TOOK it back AGAIN, and they replaced my HDD again.

A few months later, I started having issues with both the HDD not spinning up and my USB affecting my iSight camera (weird I know) so I brought it in again, and they finally just replaced my whole computer.

Everything worked great for a while, until once again, I started getting the flashing folder on startup, I took it in and they replaced my HDD again. (Yeah, this is like HDD number 3 for me now)

Since then, I have had the HDD replaced two other times, along with my superdrive, and MagSafe adapter.......I'm not exactly liked at my local Apple Store.... they know me by name... I don't exactly like going there anymore...

I also want to note that I literally baby my computer; I almost polish it daily, and am extremely careful with it

So my current list of repairs looks like this:
 5 HDD replacements
 New Logic Board
 New Super Drive
 MagSafe adapter
 New Computer

ALL that being said, I plan to sell my computer as soon as Apple Care expires; I can't risk having a flakey computer on my hands... I can't afford to pay for all the repairs. My Apple Care will expire next December, so I'm hoping I can sell it around late December- early January and be just in time for the new MBP refresh, which I'm hoping that year will include possible:

Slight redesign
Lighter computer (in weight)
Faster (of course)
Possibly retina display

Why I'm posting all this is mainly just because I wanted to hear if anyone else has had anything similar happen to them.... I'm a sucker for when it comes to first generation Apple stuff, but now I know.
