Since some time I can't overwrite files in finder. When I try to copy a file from one to another window by dragging or cmd+v there should be a dialog window with the question if I want to overwrite them.Â

I have dozens of large PSD files (well 200 of them each abt 200mb) on a network drive folder that I need to access frequently. Access to these is really slow because it seems to want to create thumbnails every time I access that folder. I don't need thumbnails as all the files have a strict naming convention so I know what I want by name. Whatever view I use to load files (I'm using Photoshop CS5) (list, column, icons) it always tries to put a little thumbnail preview next to the file name. Is there something I can type into Terminal that will stop it doing this.

I have an XServe running 10.4.11, with a United Digital RAID. About once a week I get a call from a user saying (and I quote one below): Quote: I've just lost a large Photoshop file due to the ongoing server problem - when you try to overwrite a file you're told you don't have permission, and the original file disappears. This has been happening on and off for about a year now, and I can't pin down the cause. Permissions are correct, they are saving to folders they have write access to - in fact they are usually opening those files, modifying them and saving them again when it happens. Due to hardware failures we've replaced the RAID three times this year, each time with a different model, so I'm fairly confident the RAID isn't involved. The files that are affected are Adobe Creative Suite 2 and 3 files, mostly Photoshop but some Illustrator and InDesign. Can anyone advise what I should check, or any known issues I've missed?

Every time I try to move a file from my application folder and move it somewhere (e.g. desktop) it makes an alias of the file(or folder) rather than letting me move the file. I rebuilt permissions and all the other Voodoo.

When I have a folder open, say downloads, in a list view, and I delete a file, the scroll bar will automatically jump to the top of the list. It's absolutely non-sensical. One of the most annoying things ever when your trying to organize a long list of files. Happens in 10.8.5 and in Mavericks on two separate computers. It's worse in 10.8.5 as sometimes it will glitch out and do it even when I am scrolling down the list. . Kind of thing that makes you want to switch to windows. Â
How do I turn this off?
I updated my circa 2013 Macbook Air 13" to OSX Mavericks and a strange issue has started. Every time I open Finder it takes literal minutes to load the file listing, and while it loads it freezes the section where the file listing loads with whatever background it was opened over. This happens all the time, and once it finally loads, it will do the same thing if I try to go to a different folder. This renders Finder essentially useless and I have had to add a third party (forklift) app to browse and manage files.Â
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a problem that when selecting a file that is either an attachment in email or is in my finder, double clicking on it fails to load the associated application successfully. For example, selecting a pdf file results in the pdf reader logo appearing on the lower bar on the screen, bounces up and down as if it is doing something, but just continues to bounce. I have to force quit it, then go to my application folder to load reader directly, and from within the reader I can then go and select the file. This isn't an application specific issue (It does it with Excel, Word etc).Â
It only started recently. I'm using a MBP summer 2010 with Mavericks 10.9.4. Everything else seems to work.Â

I have setup up Finder to view all folders/files. I know how to become root from Terminal using (su) and navigate to all folders and do things.
The problem I can't figure out is when I use Mac apps (such as TextEdit) to open a file in one of the hidden folders (such as /private/etc/apache,) I dont see them in the dialog even though I am logged in as root and have enabled the Finder to show all files.
Is there a way to view all the folders from these dialog boxes? I dont want to use vim or pico for editing.
When logging in to a remote server via Go/Connect to Server a dialog box comes up on restart with bad username info. No matter how many times I attempt to correct the info it always retains the bad user name. What and where is the preference file for this connect to server dialog box?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen ever I try to open or save a file in any application the spinning wheel is shown and the dialog takes from 5 to 20 seconds to display. Once it is on screen the speed returns to normal. I have a G5 Power Mac 1.6 GHz (Single Processor) 2 GB RAM (crucial) 2 SATA hard-disks (original 80 GB used as a clone for the 160 GB - I use carbon copy cloner) Everything else is as standard with the Mac. This problem started with 10.3 and may have been at the same time as installing the second 160 GB hard-disk, cloning the original to the new one, then changing the SATA cables around to make the new hard-disk on bus A. I then upgraded to Tiger but the problem still persists. I have tried repairing permissions and have used support tools like cocktail etc to check for hard drive issues and clear the cache files.
Also, on installing the second hard-disk, I also tried swap cop to change the swap file to the backup hard-disk. This did not work so I manual modified the files to return them to the original state. I did this while the system was running 10.3. I take it on upgrading to 10.4, the swap file config would have been fixed anyway? Everything else on the system seems fine. If nothing specific is found I may try removing the old hard disk.
I upgraded my MacBook Pro quad core 2.5 from Lion to Mavericks. Since then I get a LOT of beachballs when I'm using Finder. I repaired permissions, deleted com.apple.finder.plist (twice) and finally reinstalled Mavericks over the first one. Still painfully slow and lots of beachballs.

When trying to Save a document, I am presented with the Save As dialog. The file name has a serial number added to the old file name and the default destination is the Documents file. This happens whether I have tried to save using Command-S or using the Save option in the File menu. This started after I upgraded to Mavericks.

I have a Mac Air running Mavericks on a HFS partition and Windows 7 on a BOOTCAMP NTFS partition. I have some files that I want to read/write from/to both systems. Since OS X can't write NTFS and Windows can't write HFS either, and I don't want to use any 3rd-party tools/drivers, in OS X, I copy those files from NTFS to its HFS partition, make changes, then switch to Windows and sync them back to NTFS.Â
The problem is, after I copied a file from NTFS to HFS in OS X, it seemed ok. But when I switched to Windows, the very copied file in HFS partition had its size changed (bigger) although I didn't make any changes to it in OS X yet. This happens to almost every file I copied, text and binary. For those text files, I tried to open it with EditPlus in Windows and EditPlus reports the correct size on the status bar.Â

I had it originally set to copy my files to the iPhoto library, but I want them to stay in my original file structure. I disabled that feature, but I'm not sure if my files are already stored in the iPhoto library. How can I check? If they are stored there and I delete them, what will happen to my keywords, faces, places, etc? I guess this brings me to my next question. I edited a few photos using iPhoto, and I noticed that the changes did not reflect on the actual image file. Are these changes being stored some where else? How can I make it overwrite my images?

But I've made mistake. A name of folder on Ext. HDD was same as a name of folder on my macbook. While I'm busy, It was an accident. I push enter button to overwrite data.

Im new to the whole time machine/external HD thing. When I plug my external in and time machine does its thing, will it overwrite the existing copy of my computer that the external already has? Also, will it copy my windows partition (and everything within) or do I do that seperately?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhat I do is drag all the emails from my clients (I work with about 60 different new clients a year) OUT of the application window and in to folders specific to each client on another drive. This way I don't end up having a humongous inbox, and I've always been one to keep my data separate from my application in case the app develops a problem. Because so many people are lazy about replying, I end up with many messages that have the same subject line. When I was using Entourage, if I dragged a fresh email over in to that client's folder, it would create a new filename (adding a _1, or _2, etc..) automatically and thus I'd keep all my emails organized. For instance, I have my 2008 clients all in one folder, and as I clean up my inbox I can just drag messages in to their respective folders without concern because I know they'll just create new filenames if there's a conflict.
But in Mail, if I drag a mail message over to a folder, it simply overwrites the existing file if the new message has the same subject line, without any warning. Thus I lose emails. Very frustrating. And even weirder, there's not even a warning that pops up, as happens when you have any other naming conflict throughout the OS and in many other apps. I know I can do a "save as" but that means I have to navigate AND rename every time I perform that step. Takes much more time. Is there a script or something I can do in Terminal (and I am not versed in either) to replicate the way Entourage does it? It really would mean a great deal to me, and I hate to even think of switching back, because Mail does do some other cool things I like.
I just switched drives from one using 10.4.11 to a newer one using 10.5.8 (I know that makes me a dinosaur, but it's a G5). I forgot about migration assistant since I have been using carbon copy cloner to handle copying to new drives with the same OS. I already imported iCal and Address Book files and Safari bookmarks successfully (using Export from the iCal menu and Safari menu and copying the cards to a separate file).
The problem occurred when I exported (according to instructions in support section) the iTunes 8.0.2 library and imported it into iTumes 10. Disaster! Half the music is missing, none of the playlists made it. My question: Can I uses migration assistant at the juncture? Will it overwrite already imported files and information or make a huge duplicated mess?

I get all the messages and my office account exists as well, but when I respond to a mail that came into my office account and I reply to it, my gmail address is seen as a sender address, not my office one. What can I do? I have already put my office email in the outgoing add. and the smtp field.
