Software :: Slow Open / Save File Dialog System Wide

Nov 5, 2005

When ever I try to open or save a file in any application the spinning wheel is shown and the dialog takes from 5 to 20 seconds to display. Once it is on screen the speed returns to normal. I have a G5 Power Mac 1.6 GHz (Single Processor) 2 GB RAM (crucial) 2 SATA hard-disks (original 80 GB used as a clone for the 160 GB - I use carbon copy cloner) Everything else is as standard with the Mac. This problem started with 10.3 and may have been at the same time as installing the second 160 GB hard-disk, cloning the original to the new one, then changing the SATA cables around to make the new hard-disk on bus A. I then upgraded to Tiger but the problem still persists. I have tried repairing permissions and have used support tools like cocktail etc to check for hard drive issues and clear the cache files.

Also, on installing the second hard-disk, I also tried swap cop to change the swap file to the backup hard-disk. This did not work so I manual modified the files to return them to the original state. I did this while the system was running 10.3. I take it on upgrading to 10.4, the swap file config would have been fixed anyway? Everything else on the system seems fine. If nothing specific is found I may try removing the old hard disk.

OS X :: Open / Save File Dialogue Slow On 10.6.2

Feb 9, 2010

After using my Mac Pro for a while without rebooting, the "open file..." dialogue starts to slow down. For example in Safari when I'm pressing "cmd O" it takes like 5 seconds until the window pops up, sometimes showing me the beachball... this is system wide, it is reproducible in every application and will be fixed on the next reboot - then it takes a couple of hours until it starts hanging again. I have no idea whats causing this but it has been there for months and right now its going on my nerves... There's also a thread on the Apple boards [URL]

OS X :: Turn Off All Thumbnails In Finder & File Open Dialog Boxes?

Aug 27, 2010

I have dozens of large PSD files (well 200 of them each abt 200mb) on a network drive folder that I need to access frequently. Access to these is really slow because it seems to want to create thumbnails every time I access that folder. I don't need thumbnails as all the files have a strict naming convention so I know what I want by name. Whatever view I use to load files (I'm using Photoshop CS5) (list, column, icons) it always tries to put a little thumbnail preview next to the file name. Is there something I can type into Terminal that will stop it doing this.

OS X :: View All Folders/files With File Open Dialog In Any Application?

Mar 13, 2009

I have setup up Finder to view all folders/files. I know how to become root from Terminal using (su) and navigate to all folders and do things.

The problem I can't figure out is when I use Mac apps (such as TextEdit) to open a file in one of the hidden folders (such as /private/etc/apache,) I dont see them in the dialog even though I am logged in as root and have enabled the Finder to show all files.

Is there a way to view all the folders from these dialog boxes? I dont want to use vim or pico for editing.

Mac Mini :: Open .ods Zip File Which Save As .cpgz File Extension?

Apr 10, 2012

I try to open an Open Office spread sheet and it simply saves the file as another file with the .cpgz extension which does the same thing.  This did not happen a couple weeks ago; I think my download for Apple updates may be the culprit.  My OS X is now 10.7.3, I believe originally it was 10.7.2 but I could be wrong.

The original document is a zip archive but now "saves as" a .cpgz archive.  I have tried the "Unarchiver", which I just downloaded, but it only creates another file with subfolders, none of which appear to have my original spread sheet.  (To be honest, I never noticed this Open Office spread sheet file was a zip file until a few minutes ago when I tried to unsuccessfully open it).

When trying to Save a document, I am presented with the Save As dialog. The file name has a serial number added  to the old file name and the default destination is the Documents file. This happens whether I have tried to save using Command-S or using the Save option in the File menu. This started after I upgraded to Mavericks.

IMac (Intel) :: Could Not Open Folders In Save File

Jun 17, 2014

But I have another problem with a large important file that has gone missing. About a fortnight ago I went to open a personal file of which I call Favorites, I could not find it, I looked in my backup, Time Machine and it had disappeared there as well. Then a funny thing happened while I was trying to save a file, the lost file appeared in the file selection box. I clicked on it and it opened all the to the folders inside, but of course I could not open the folders in the save file. I then went looking again for the file but to no avail. how I might get this file back, it must be dodgeing around somewhere.

OS X :: System Wide View Settings?

Jun 20, 2010

Am I correct in the assumption that if I set the view options on the top level (OS-X HDD, for example) and select 'Use as Defaults' any folders below that (i.e. everything) will assume those settings?

If so, it doesn't seem to be doing that for me. I'm constantly coming across folders that I need to set the view options manually...

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Why Is File System Slow To Respond

Feb 19, 2012

I'm currently running Snow Leopard an early 2011 Macbook Pro.  The laptop also runs Intel's 320 SSD as its primary storage. I've noticed recently that my file system appears to be running slow and by that, I mean if I try to Save a file from the web, save a document from Office, or a photo from Photoshop, the prompt that lets me select where to store the file takes about 10 seconds to pop up.  Everything else with the system runs pretty fast.  The computer still boots up quickly as an SSD does.  Opening programs takes one bounce or so... but the saving a file prompt across the board has been extremely slow.

OS X :: How To Make Text Bigger System Wide

Nov 8, 2010

Im trying to help my mum set up her imac and she has asked me to help make the text bigger on the screen. Ive shown her how to zoom on word/safari/etc, however ideally I want to make all the text on the computer bigger - eg. menus at top of screen, finder text, etc...

The first thing I tried was adjusting the display resolution from 1920x1080 to 1600x900 or 1280x720, but this seemed to make the screen blurry.

Does anyone know if there is any other way that I can help make the text bigger for all system elements?

I'll be sending this out to a few companies and I'd like to know what the best file type is to select that will be readable by everyone? When I go to 'save as' I see a long list of options and I'm not sure which one to pick so that PC users can view.

Or can they load the .odt file just fine?
