OS X Mavericks :: Finder Beach Balling - Failed Setting Front Application To Finder - Error?

Jun 3, 2014

I upgraded my MacBook Pro quad core 2.5 from Lion to Mavericks. Since then I get a LOT of beachballs when I'm using Finder. I repaired permissions, deleted com.apple.finder.plist (twice) and finally reinstalled Mavericks over the first one. Still painfully slow and lots of beachballs.

OS X Mavericks :: Any Operation Involving Finder Hangs - Beach Ball

Jun 26, 2014

Friend has 13" MBP mid 2010.  We upgraded to Mavericks about six weeks ago.  Then, about a month ago, any operation involving the Finder hangs, and I get a beach ball that lasts at least several minutes.  Other applications, like MS Office and browsers, are unaffected unless we try to open, save, or close a document.  Attempting to open any folder causes the same problem.

I replaced his old hard drive with a new SSD and did a restore from TM, and the problem came back after a few days.  Otherwise the machine works fine.  Disk Utility reads fine.

I created a new account as a test, and did not have the same problem.  So, I'm convinced it is something to do with his account, or with some app that affects his account.  It doesnt' seem to be a system problem because no one else in his SOHO is experiencing it.  And, because the second account works, I don't think it is a hardware problem like a bad cable (I've read lots about this).

I'm going to try to strip down the machine and delete a bunch of stuff like Dropbox, and I'll recreate his NAS access to see if that works.

His keychain won't remember one of two NAS passwords (I mount a TM volume and a production share on boot).  TM mounts automatically but the production mount asks for his password every time.  I've tried Keychain first aid.

13" MBP, 4G RAM, 2.4G Intel Core Duo, Crucial MX100 256GB SSD (brand new).

QuickTime :: X Beach Balling Delay When Opening Any File?

Feb 9, 2012

lately my Quicktime X gives me a delay of 10-15 seconds and a beachball before playing any file.  Quicktime 7 plays without a hitch instantly. This is true of files on all locations on my Mac.

The file opens instantly, I see the first frame, but before it plays it will berachball. It is true for video and audio files.

OS X Mavericks :: Application Fails To Load When Clicking On File In Finder Or Attachment In Email

Aug 26, 2014

I have a problem that when selecting a file that is either an attachment in email or is in my finder, double clicking on it fails to load the associated application successfully. For example, selecting a pdf file results in the pdf reader logo appearing on the lower bar on the screen, bounces up and down as if it is doing something, but just continues to bounce. I have to force quit it, then go to my application folder to load reader directly, and from within the reader I can then go and select the file. This isn't an application specific issue (It does it with Excel, Word etc).

It only started recently. I'm using a MBP summer 2010 with Mavericks 10.9.4. Everything else seems to work.

Though my hard drive says is labelled Mac HD: Mac OS X 10.5.6 , I am continuously prompted that Spotlight closed unexpectedly. And when I try to reinstall the Mac OS X, the DVD no longer appears on the desktop and Finder too, cannot be opened for me to locate the DVD.

OS X :: Setting Desktop Backgrounds - Browse Files Within Finder

Jul 15, 2009

I have only been a Mac user for about six months now but there is a problem I can't figure out (maybe it can't be done). Is there anyway when you are browsing files within Finder (or viewing a picture in Preview) that you can select a photo and have it immediately become your desktop background. I know in Windows I was always able to do this by just right clicking on the file and set background was an option. The only way I've found to set the background on my Mac is to right click on the desktop and then choose the "Change the Desktop Background" option and do it there. I can also do it within iPhoto or Picasa. But quite often I'm just browsing through my files in Finder and I run across a picture I'd like to use for my background. Surely if you can do it in Windows you can do it somehow in Mac OS.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Get Spinning Beach Ball, Then Front Row?

Jun 7, 2012

I have been experiencing the spinning beach ball. Eventualy my screen turns to dark blue/indigo (not black), then I get Front Row on my screen (V.2.1.7). The only thing that will get rid of it is pounding on keys, usually command or option or escape or some combo of them gets my desktop screen back. It's becomming annoying. I have run disc repair, and repair permissions. This probably happens several times a week (2.3,4) I don't know if there is a way of disabling Front Row ( it may just select something else to appear). I have been thinking about things as drastic as reinstalling system or replacing my Mac.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Application Finder Can't Be Opened

Jun 17, 2012

Tried to turn off computer and it kept prompting me to force quite various applications. I have since restarted the computer but now am getting this error when trying to open Finder. I have looked through several discussions and unfortunately am not an apple expert so much of what I am reading is foreign to me.I have opened the Terminal and entered a prompt that made all of my desktop docs and finder visable, but as soon as I closed out the Terminal it all disappeared again. Can anyone point me in the right direction - step by step - to get Finder back up and running. To my knowledge all other applications seem to be working as normal.FYI I do have a few extermal items attached to the Mac. OS X V10.7 Lion :: Application Switches Spaces When Opened From Finder

Feb 8, 2012

I am using Lion 10.7 , I assigned dreamweaver to desktop1 by choose Options > This Desktop when in desktop1. Then relaunch DW and it correctly opened in desktop 1. Now if i open a file using in finder (which is itself assigned to desktop3) on a file that is default to DW then Dreamweaver moves itself to Desktop3.

I thought the point was that we could assign different applications to different spaces and they would stay that way. Are we saying that if a file is opened from finder its default application will be moved and set up of spaces does not apply ?.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Open Finder Window And Finder Preferences Don't Stick

Apr 5, 2012

Sometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.

Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

OS X :: Finder Icon Missing / Finder Became Invisible After Relauncing The Dock

Oct 1, 2009

Today I tried to change the finder icon in the dock. Because I'm cheap, I dont have candybar, so I tried to use liteicon. While this changed the finder icon in messages like "do you want to empty trash," it did not change it on the dock, even after logging out and relaunching the dock.

So I went into a bunch of core services and replaced all the finder .icns and .pngs with the one I wanted to use. When I relaunched the dock, the finder was invisible, but it still had the little blue "open" dot below where it was.I downloaded the candybar trial to try to fix it, but even candybar didn't get the icon back.

I'm using 10.5.8. Where are all the places the finder icon should be to show up?

OS X :: Finder Cannot Complete Operation (Error Code -36)

May 2, 2010

So a few weeks ago, I copied my entire music library (97.5gb) onto my external hard drive (Mac OS X Extended, Journaled) to save space on my boot drive. Since then, I've been able to update my iPod, receiving the message "Attempting to copy to the disk <iPod name> failed. The disk could not be read from or written to".

I formatted my iPod to see if that was the problem, but it still won't copy. So, in order to right that situation, I tried to copy all my music back to my regular HD, but now am receiving the Finder Error code -36 "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some of the data in (name of file) could not be read or written." I can't format the external drive either because then I would lose all of my music.
