Does Timeline overwrite older backups? My backup disk is at capacity and Timeline won't backup.

I have an external that I use with Time Machine, however I don't need incremental backups. Rather, what I would like is only one backup so that I can save space. In this backup, however, I would like specific things to change that change on my computer, as TM already does with its incremental backups. So basically I just want to condense the function of TM into one single backup that will update whenever I back up again. I realize this is not the primary function of TM, but is there any way to make this possible? Or is there any other software that would do this? I've heard of Silverkeeper and Retrospect, but never used them.

Only the most recent one.Â

Got a new HD for my Mac backups to day and did a full back up. Previously, I used a different HD for backups and would like to know if I can add those older back ups on a different HD to the new HD that I'm currently using?

I'm trying to get older backups off my Time Machine hard drive but when using the Migration Assistant I only have the option to transfer the "latest backup" to my new iMac. And when I try to drag and drop the iMovie library (which is the only set of files I really want) iMovie on my iMac states I cannot open the library for either permission reasons (the first time I tried it) or because the file does not exist.Â

At first (all of a sudden out of the blue) I could not enter Time Machine mode for love or money despite clicking on the enter time machine action botton, however I could run a 'backup now' at any point and this appeared to go through as well as the hourly automated ones. Then switching Off then back On Time Machine suddenly allowed me to enter Time Machine; however I am only able to access the finder windows for any local 'white tick' backups which in my case were only for the last several snapshot backups for today... but if I try and access any dates after this right back until November 2011 last year, nothing happens at all and the date/backup markers are completely unaccessible. Incidently, all of these previous 'purple tick' date markers (time machine backups/snapshots on external firewire 800 drive) were accessible before, but know they can't be accessed even though they corecctly index the appropriate dates right back until November.
I'ts worth pointing out that I've had many glitces and random problems since using a Thunderbolt Display which is where the external hard-drive containing the time machine backup is hooked up to. A seperate recent issue is constantly losing sound on the Thunderbolt Display which requires a reboot to get it back temporarily, but this is a seperate issue but may be related if the cause of a number of problems may be originating from the TD.
The external disk drive containing the time machine backup image, appears to be online ok as I'm able to access the drive in a normal manner. Has some kind of special links nature or association relasionship between the Time Machine program and the external drive and backup disk image contained on it been disrupted or broken? If this is the case, can they be re-linked or re-associated?

Lately when I go to view backups using the Time Machine interface it lists all my backups going back to April 22, 2009, but anything older than late August 2010 is blacked out and can't be clicked.
When I look in my Time Capsule disk on the finder, all the older backups are there and I can view and copy all the files.
Also, in system preferences, Time Machine preferences lists my oldest backup as April 22, 2009 and there is plenty of disk space available on the Time Capsule.
Why is this happening and what can I do to fix it?

Problem started after updating to Yosemite. I am running 10.10.1. I can find all my backups, going back to 2010 in fact, when browsing my external FW800 hard drive directly in the Finder. But if I click the menubar icon and choose "Enter Time Machine," I can see some recent backups for some folders, but I cannot access some older backups that I know are there on that same drive. The window title bars in the TM interface are totally grayed out for those older backups. But again, there are all on the same FW800 external HD, and I can search them just fine and extract the files just fine using the Finder. Â
Is the Time Machine interface totally broken in Yosemite? Â
Clearly there is nothing wrong with my external FW800 HD, otherwise I wouldn't be able to manually browse and extract files via the Finder. And yes, it makes regular TM backups every day too. It's only the "Enter Time Machine" UI that is partly broken. I say "partly" because some backups (very recent) display, but I cannot access all the backups. It's very strange.Â

i have a macbook with an internal drive of which about 230gb if full and used.
I have a 250gb external which i have been using to back up with time machine, done it several times over a few months.
Now there is like 70gb left on the external, and when i try to back up, it says failed, not enough space on external.
But i thought when there is not enough space, it simply deletes and backs over older time machine backups.
My Time Machine has been making the usual regular backups for a few months onto my Time Capsule. I just found that all the backups prior to about a week ago have vanished. It's not a disaster (I think) as I assume that the current backups reflect what's on my iMac (I haven't had to delete files from it yet).
Where did they go? Why did they go?
A possible connection: My TC is 500GB; my iMac 1TB. I recently put extra files for temporary use onto the iMac hard drive - Time Machine said (in effect) 'that's too much, try removing certain folders from the backup'. I excluded said folder and things seemed okay, but it would be at around the time I did that that my old backups have gone.
Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem with the Time Machine. I bought a 500gb Time Capsule last July and it has been running perfectly until a few days agp. I noticed that all my backups were no where to be seen (when entering Time Machine on my MBP) and that it was doing a full backup.. The backup took the guts of 36 hours.
I've come home today to find that all backups are gone again and it is doing another full backup!!!Any ideas what is wrong here?
I tried to install my coworkers Office for mac2008 0n my new MacBook(my first mac also). This didnt work as he was only allowed 1 user and I needed the business version anyway. So I bought the business version and tried to install it but it still shows up under his product code. When I erased(or tried to erase) all the old office stuff and start again it let me type in my new product code but then 2 install screens later it told me my product code was that of my co-workers?Any ideas on how to get around this? Please go into detail as Im a novice to MAC
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm in the process of organizing thousands of photos in iPhoto and I have a few questions. I had it originally set to copy my files to the iPhoto library, but I want them to stay in my original file structure. I disabled that feature, but I'm not sure if my files are already stored in the iPhoto library. How can I check? If they are stored there and I delete them, what will happen to my keywords, faces, places, etc? I guess this brings me to my next question. I edited a few photos using iPhoto, and I noticed that the changes did not reflect on the actual image file. Are these changes being stored some where else? How can I make it overwrite my images?

I used a macbook pro with Snow leopard 10.6.1. It was an accident, I copy all files in folder from Ext. HDD to a folder in macbook.
But I've made mistake. A name of folder on Ext. HDD was same as a name of folder on my macbook. While I'm busy, It was an accident. I push enter button to overwrite data.
A 7 GB folder has changed to approx. 2 GB folder.
In this case, Does anyone know how to recover my data. It's an important data, I've done it for a year.
I tried to use data rescue 3.0 and file salvage. But a search result of these 2 programs show me some thing such as 'Pic001 to Pic15555' , 'autocad 001.dwg-autocad 30000.dwg' ,001.pdf-11234.pdf'.
My hardisk is 250 GB but a search result is 300++ GB. I can't find a file that I want to use.
In this case, Is there any program that easy to recover my data???
Im new to the whole time machine/external HD thing. When I plug my external in and time machine does its thing, will it overwrite the existing copy of my computer that the external already has? Also, will it copy my windows partition (and everything within) or do I do that seperately?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an XServe running 10.4.11, with a United Digital RAID. About once a week I get a call from a user saying (and I quote one below): Quote: I've just lost a large Photoshop file due to the ongoing server problem - when you try to overwrite a file you're told you don't have permission, and the original file disappears. This has been happening on and off for about a year now, and I can't pin down the cause. Permissions are correct, they are saving to folders they have write access to - in fact they are usually opening those files, modifying them and saving them again when it happens. Due to hardware failures we've replaced the RAID three times this year, each time with a different model, so I'm fairly confident the RAID isn't involved. The files that are affected are Adobe Creative Suite 2 and 3 files, mostly Photoshop but some Illustrator and InDesign. Can anyone advise what I should check, or any known issues I've missed?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhat I do is drag all the emails from my clients (I work with about 60 different new clients a year) OUT of the application window and in to folders specific to each client on another drive. This way I don't end up having a humongous inbox, and I've always been one to keep my data separate from my application in case the app develops a problem. Because so many people are lazy about replying, I end up with many messages that have the same subject line. When I was using Entourage, if I dragged a fresh email over in to that client's folder, it would create a new filename (adding a _1, or _2, etc..) automatically and thus I'd keep all my emails organized. For instance, I have my 2008 clients all in one folder, and as I clean up my inbox I can just drag messages in to their respective folders without concern because I know they'll just create new filenames if there's a conflict.
But in Mail, if I drag a mail message over to a folder, it simply overwrites the existing file if the new message has the same subject line, without any warning. Thus I lose emails. Very frustrating. And even weirder, there's not even a warning that pops up, as happens when you have any other naming conflict throughout the OS and in many other apps. I know I can do a "save as" but that means I have to navigate AND rename every time I perform that step. Takes much more time. Is there a script or something I can do in Terminal (and I am not versed in either) to replicate the way Entourage does it? It really would mean a great deal to me, and I hate to even think of switching back, because Mail does do some other cool things I like.
I just switched drives from one using 10.4.11 to a newer one using 10.5.8 (I know that makes me a dinosaur, but it's a G5). I forgot about migration assistant since I have been using carbon copy cloner to handle copying to new drives with the same OS. I already imported iCal and Address Book files and Safari bookmarks successfully (using Export from the iCal menu and Safari menu and copying the cards to a separate file).
The problem occurred when I exported (according to instructions in support section) the iTunes 8.0.2 library and imported it into iTumes 10. Disaster! Half the music is missing, none of the playlists made it. My question: Can I uses migration assistant at the juncture? Will it overwrite already imported files and information or make a huge duplicated mess?

My prob is that I have directed my gmail and my office mail address both to my mac mail. I get all the messages and my office account exists as well, but when I respond to a mail that came into my office account and I reply to it, my gmail address is seen as a sender address, not my office one. What can I do? I have already put my office email in the outgoing add. and the smtp field.

I'm a PC user at the moment, and my macbook is coming at the end of the month when I'll be turning 18. And one thing I hate about Windows is the Windows Movie Maker, cause it only lets you play one soundtrack playing at the same time. My mate has Adobe Premiere, and it lets you add as many audio tracks you want to play at the same time.
So can iMovie 09 do that?
And while I'm here, does iLife come pre-installed on Macs?
I have looked around and can't find any guides for my particular needs, so maybe someone here can advise me. I am a teacher and would like to make little instructional podcasts that include still images of a process and some narration over them. I need to be able to control how long to make the still images last on screen so that they fit the narration.I also want to know the best way to package it/export it so that it can be emailed or played on mobile phones.
