Im new to the whole time machine/external HD thing. When I plug my external in and time machine does its thing, will it overwrite the existing copy of my computer that the external already has? Also, will it copy my windows partition (and everything within) or do I do that seperately?
View 3 Replies'd like to run Win 7 on virtualization software, but not sure of the best way to back up, as I've been reading a lot about how Time Machine (unless you configure it not to) will save the VM folder as one large file, which of course could make the back up tens of GBs and bloat a drive quickly. I'm planning to connect an external HDD partitioned for both Time Machine (for incremental backups) and Superduper(for more easily bootable restore).
VMware Fusion (for instance) recommends backing up within the VM itself. But this alone doesn't seem like a good strategy for catastrophic failure of a HDD.
I have an external that I use with Time Machine, however I don't need incremental backups. Rather, what I would like is only one backup so that I can save space. In this backup, however, I would like specific things to change that change on my computer, as TM already does with its incremental backups. So basically I just want to condense the function of TM into one single backup that will update whenever I back up again. I realize this is not the primary function of TM, but is there any way to make this possible? Or is there any other software that would do this? I've heard of Silverkeeper and Retrospect, but never used them.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a WD Passport Essential to back up my Macbook. When I plugged in the WD Passport, my Mac asked if I want to use this storage device for my Time Machine.
1. Should I use the WD Passport as the Time Machine storage device or use the WD Passport software to run back-ups?
2. If I use it for my Time Machine, will I be able to access my files on other machines?
3. Is it possible to have files stored on the WD Passport, such as photos, but not have those files on my Macbook... if I am using the Passport for back-ups?
Is it possible to have Time Machine overwrite an existing backup instead of making excessive new backups? If not, is there a way to control when Time Machine preforms its backup task so as to not make excessive backups?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI´m pleases with my Imac 21.5" Sandy Bridge I5 processor med 14 gb ram. I dont use Time Capsule (Have considered it) but instead i bought 2 Eks HD a´500GB. The one of them was connected to Time Machine and there has been no trouble what so ever. With that one. My idea to use the other manual for my pictures. Then i could easily control my pics and allso find pics for frinds etc and easy copy them. But i made a mistake when the HD i´ve been using for time machine was running out of space. I was´nent aware that it just would begin to overwrite so i still had the latest. So instead i took the other and connected that as a time machine. But now i have 2 time machines. I have tried everything i have ekspertise to but every time i plugg it in the imac regognize it as time machine. I allso have windows installed as a parallel desktop wich function perfectly. From there i have tried to format the HD, and the same i´ve triedfrom a laptop but non of it is helping.

I'm an idiot, pleased to meet you.I had 2 external drives connected to my Macbook Pro, both had time machine back ups on...I meant to delete one of these but deleted the wrong one, and dragged it into Trash. On realising my mistake I tried to drag it back out of Trash, as you would normally but after "preparing to copy" for four hours it told me the drive was full...It's a 500gb drive, and the Time Machine back up is the only thing on it, so presumably it's just trying to copy itself when the back up is still present on the drive, albeit in the Trash.

Also couldn't find it in the Apple support docs. So...Does anybody know how far back TC backups go? Does it just hold on to the latest backup or can you go back awhile to recover your files?For example, if a file was corrupted six months ago, will I be able to retrieve the prior uncorrupted version of it - or just the latest TC backup version of it (which would of course also be corrupted)?

I had it originally set to copy my files to the iPhoto library, but I want them to stay in my original file structure. I disabled that feature, but I'm not sure if my files are already stored in the iPhoto library. How can I check? If they are stored there and I delete them, what will happen to my keywords, faces, places, etc? I guess this brings me to my next question. I edited a few photos using iPhoto, and I noticed that the changes did not reflect on the actual image file. Are these changes being stored some where else? How can I make it overwrite my images?

How to recover data from a mistake overwrite files???
I used a macbook pro with Snow leopard 10.6.1. It was an accident, I copy all files in folder from Ext. HDD to a folder in macbook.
But I've made mistake. A name of folder on Ext. HDD was same as a name of folder on my macbook. While I'm busy, It was an accident. I push enter button to overwrite data.
A 7 GB folder has changed to approx. 2 GB folder.
In this case, Does anyone know how to recover my data. It's an important data, I've done it for a year.
I tried to use data rescue 3.0 and file salvage. But a search result of these 2 programs show me some thing such as 'Pic001 to Pic15555' , 'autocad 001.dwg-autocad 30000.dwg' ,001.pdf-11234.pdf'.
My hardisk is 250 GB but a search result is 300++ GB. I can't find a file that I want to use.

Sometimes I have had 2 folders with some content, which I would like to merge.For example two itunes music folders. Is there any way to transfer all files from folder 1 to folder 2 but not overwrite those that already exist? I do also have some documents folders where I would like to do the trick if it is possible.

About once a week I get a call from a user saying (and I quote one below): Quote: I've just lost a large Photoshop file due to the ongoing server problem - when you try to overwrite a file you're told you don't have permission, and the original file disappears. This has been happening on and off for about a year now, and I can't pin down the cause. Permissions are correct, they are saving to folders they have write access to - in fact they are usually opening those files, modifying them and saving them again when it happens. Due to hardware failures we've replaced the RAID three times this year, each time with a different model, so I'm fairly confident the RAID isn't involved. The files that are affected are Adobe Creative Suite 2 and 3 files, mostly Photoshop but some Illustrator and InDesign. Can anyone advise what I should check, or any known issues I've missed?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhat I do is drag all the emails from my clients (I work with about 60 different new clients a year) OUT of the application window and in to folders specific to each client on another drive. This way I don't end up having a humongous inbox, and I've always been one to keep my data separate from my application in case the app develops a problem. Because so many people are lazy about replying, I end up with many messages that have the same subject line. When I was using Entourage, if I dragged a fresh email over in to that client's folder, it would create a new filename (adding a _1, or _2, etc..) automatically and thus I'd keep all my emails organized. For instance, I have my 2008 clients all in one folder, and as I clean up my inbox I can just drag messages in to their respective folders without concern because I know they'll just create new filenames if there's a conflict.
But in Mail, if I drag a mail message over to a folder, it simply overwrites the existing file if the new message has the same subject line, without any warning. Thus I lose emails. Very frustrating. And even weirder, there's not even a warning that pops up, as happens when you have any other naming conflict throughout the OS and in many other apps. I know I can do a "save as" but that means I have to navigate AND rename every time I perform that step. Takes much more time. Is there a script or something I can do in Terminal (and I am not versed in either) to replicate the way Entourage does it? It really would mean a great deal to me, and I hate to even think of switching back, because Mail does do some other cool things I like.
I just switched drives from one using 10.4.11 to a newer one using 10.5.8 (I know that makes me a dinosaur, but it's a G5). I forgot about migration assistant since I have been using carbon copy cloner to handle copying to new drives with the same OS. I already imported iCal and Address Book files and Safari bookmarks successfully (using Export from the iCal menu and Safari menu and copying the cards to a separate file).
The problem occurred when I exported (according to instructions in support section) the iTunes 8.0.2 library and imported it into iTumes 10. Disaster! Half the music is missing, none of the playlists made it. My question: Can I uses migration assistant at the juncture? Will it overwrite already imported files and information or make a huge duplicated mess?

I get all the messages and my office account exists as well, but when I respond to a mail that came into my office account and I reply to it, my gmail address is seen as a sender address, not my office one. Is it possible to back-up the contents of a NAS drive to a FireWire or USB2 drive using a Mac and Time Machine?
I know there are methods to get TM to back-up TO a NAS but if, for example, someone had their iTunes library on a NAS for access over a network- could TM be used to copy that drive for safe-keeping?
The path of the back-up would, basically, go like this:
NAS --> ROUTER --> IMAC & TIME MACHINE --> USB2/FW DRIVE
Sorry if this seems a simple one but searching for an answer just yields dozens of results for backing-up TO a NAS drive, not copying/saving the NAS itself.
Recently, I've figured out that when backing up, time machine only backs up some files, but not the entire thing... I see that this is a way to keep the size of the back up on a low level, true, but isn't it a bad way to back up your files?! Shouldn't it be full backups of the entire library?!
Second question; when I will set up my new mac machine I will buy this summer, is the integration really that easy and files do not get lost?! I am a bit skeptical as a few months ago I integrated data from my old computer to my mac (without using time machine, just regular back ups, manually) and some files were not being imported, god knows why.
Stupid question; when integrating the old files from time machine to a new mac, do they integrate system preferences / applications too? Cause I really have done lots of cool tweaking and it would suck to do all that stuff again...
Also, can I select the files I want to import or does it automatically import all the files from time machine to the new mac? A problem is that there is lots of (cookies, temp files etc.) stored on every mac and now, the quetsion is, does time machine import all these old/makingsystemslower/* little files too?!
