OS X Mavericks :: Dragging Apps From Application Folder To Trash
Sep 12, 2014
I've been a Mac user for a few years now but I was reluctant to update to Mavericks because whenever I hadn't done a clean install my macbook would become very slow and unstable, so I was using Lion until I bought a new Macbook.
Before, whenever I wanted to delete an app I'd open the Application folder on the Dock and drag it straight to the trash from there. In Mavericks, however, when I try to do that the app just stays there, and I have to open the application folder on Finder to be able to drag it (and it prompts me for my password). Is there a way I could go back to deleting them right from the App folder in the dock (and not having to type my password every time)?Â

If I want to uninstall an application, is dragging it to the trash the same as uninstalling it? I get the impression that it isn't. What about all the files the app has left behind?

i'm new to Mac and im just learning all the features. I bought the 15" mid macbook pro and this laptop is awesome. However, i accidentally deleted the last 2 icons next to the trash icon. I know that you can retrieve icons by going to the application and dragging them to the dock. But the last 2 icons i believe is something different. I forgot the name of the icons as well but i know it has something to do with recent activities or some sort.

1. I've heard that installing applications is as simple as dragging and dropping the file into the Apps folder. Is this true? What about the more complex programs like Photoshop etc?2. In iPhoto 09, I know about Events and how they group photos together by date etc. but I'd like to have more general events like "My Nephew" "Nights out" "Sports Photos" that could span years. Is this do-able?3. Is it possible to hide an entire event in iPhoto?4. Does iPhoto use destructive image-editing techniques? Or is it non-destructive, keeping the original safe and un-edited?

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and found that a function I used to use isn't available anymore, but not sure if I just need to configure it or something.
What I'd like to be able to do is when I drag a file over an external hard drive disk image, I like for that to open so I can choose the sub-directory where I'd like to place the file. How can I set up 10.6.x to allow me to do this?

How do I drag all the windows of say Compressor or FCP as a group? Is there a special keyboard command to just click on one window and then just drag your mouse to move all windows? I often would like to move Compressor to different sections of my screen. I cannot do that now without having to individually move all five windows.

Is this bad? Just started happening yesterday. Restarted, but persistent... when I drag a file from an open folder on my desktop, the entire desktop flickers like you can see below. Like ghosted images of all the icons and open windows get scrambled around. It happens in a fraction of a second, but I was able to capture a screen shot. Please let me know what this means.Â

I am planning on buying a new Mac this weekend and was trying to decide on a hard drive size. When I clicked "Get Info" on the Applications folder it said 31.7GB, but when I actually added up the amount of space of each app in the folder, it only came to 12.6GB. I even included the miscellaneous folders (some of which were a couple GBs in size). If I were to transfer to another computer, would it say my Apps take up a different amount of space?

Since upgrading to 10.9.4 i've been beset with numerous bugs and general odd system behavior. Previous to this update I had experience lag when using my Wacom Intuos 4 tablet. For example when doing a preview render in Maya the tablet would become unresponsive and laggy. This never occurred on my old Mac Pro 2008.Â
I noticed there was an update to the Wacom Drivers (6.3.8-2) so I did the update. After updating I've been experiencing dramatically slow screen redraw. So whenever I drag a window or scroll, the image stutters, flickers and lags as it tries to redraw to keep up with mouse position. This makes it impossible to use the computer. Â
I uninstalled the Wacom drivers and the lag and redraw errors persist. I looked at Activity Monitor to if it was some other system resource like Spotlight that was momentarily hogging resources. The only thing I notice is that the dreaded "kernel_task" seems to be using a lot of ram (1.46 GB) and cpu time (usually at the top of the list). Also, "com.apple.IconServicesAgent" seems to be using a lot of CPU time (usually #2 in the list).Â

Why doesn't the original document I'm dragging and dropping from one folder to another move? What's happening is the computer is creating a duplicte of the document and placing it in the new location with a new creation date. The original document I wanted to drag and drop into a new location remains where it started as the "original" document and the new copy has this little arrow protruding up from the lower left of its icon. At first I thought it was an alias, but it's a copy of the document I thought I was dragging and dropping.Â

I have a new 21.5" iMac and have been playing around with everything. When I started two weeks ago I had an Apps folder with the Apps logo on the dock to the right of the dotted separation. All the applications are there lined up with the first application showing but for my consternation I cannot put the Applications in there folder like it was when I started out two weeks ago. This is the Snow Leopard OS.

I accidentally dropped my "Applications Folder" off my Dock when I first got my Mac and it disappeared. When I put it back by dragging the applications folder onto the Dock, instead of assuming the Applications Folder logo, it took on the logo of the first application in my Applications Folder: the Address book. Now, my desktop permanantly has the picture of the Address Book instead of the picture of the Applications Folder.
How do I fix this? ive followed other thread advice with no luck. Is there a way to re-set the Dock? Where does the logo live and how do I get it back there?

I'm using MacBook Pro Early 2011 model with Mountain Lion (10.8.5).
I recently noticed that there was an application folder in my home folder (the folder with your username), but that application folder had been empty. I remember I used to be able to access to my applications from that folder, but not anymore.Â
Since the folder was empty, I deleted it before doing further research.Â
After deleting the empty application folder from the home folder, I looked up and some said the application folder in the home folder and the application folder in Macintosh HD are two different folders. I don't know what it means, but I would like to have an application folder with applications in my home folder. Is this possible? or should I just make an Alias folder and put it in my home folder?

I'm pretty new to Mac (4 months)..having finally come from the "dark side". My question is: when you install software (OS X 10.6) does it send files all over the place like Windoze does? And, to uninstall something, is all you do is right-click and "send to trash"? Will that delete any and all files associated with that app?

Is there a way to prevent apps from accessing files that are in the trash? I recently got bit when I moved some files to the trash, checked to make sure that nothing was broken, and then took out the trash. Turned out some applications were still using the files while they were in the trash. Is there a way, either in terminal or finder, to leave the files in the trash but make it so no apps can see them? It would be nice if this was the normal behavior.

I've never really felt the need to delete apps from this interface, but there are a bunch showing up I do not recall installing. They are not listed in the Applications folder. I cannot drag them to the trash can, and no 'x' pops up in the corner when I get the icons wiggling. I found some command on some website for deleting things through terminal but I tried it and it did not work (some error about "too many options"). Again I repeat there is no 'x' on the app icons and there is no way to make it appear.

I've been wondering if there's an application for Mac OSX [ Or even Windows ] where you can build iPhone Applications with drag and drop or kind of WYSIWYG. Something easy and not hard.

This just recently started to happen. Safari and Mail disappear everytime I quit the applications and I have to relaunch from launchpad. I have the checked the option "keep in the Dock".Â
I am running Mac OS X version 10.7.4 on an iMac7,1 and have been for a while. Â
I can't seem to find any current information in the Apple Discussion Forums. Probable something really simple for a really annoying occurance.Â
