OS X Mavericks :: Mac Mini (Late 2012) Keep Failing To Reboot Or Shutdown
Sep 2, 2014
It has been around 2 months since my Mac Mini started doing this.
I'm on OSX 10.9.2 and there is an update to 10.9.3 to be done.
When I try to update, it instantly jumps to this grey screen and reboot.
And shown and error log window.

Ever since, when I try to reboot independently of the update, or even shut down, it does the same, and I can only force shut down holding the power button.
I tried the shift+ctrl+opt+p+r command, but I guess it didn't worked.Â

I purchased the new 13-inch Macbook pro on the day of its launch and since the first 30 minutes of use it has constantly frozen intermidiatly for apperently no reason. I've tried re-installing the OS, taking it to the genius bar(They said everything looks ok and on the repair sheet it said "UNIT IS RFB"), and resetting the SMC. I checked the kernel log and it has a tendency to throw this: 7/4/12 12:02:42.000 AM kernel: Previous Shutdown Cause: 3. Read up on this and apperently it has to do with overheating issues, but this doesn't make sense condsidering it can happen even when just doing textbased web searching(I do not have adobe flash installed). I tried ressetting the SMC, changed nothing. Some days it may only happen once or twice, but sometimes it happens so frequently that the computer is barely usable. Apperently I am not the only one having this problem, some people are reporting the same thing but claiming it to be a problem with the Intel 4000 graphics card. The model is the baseline 13-inch Macbook pro running OSX 10.7.4.

I've had my original MBP since 2007, which was originally on 10.4 I believe. I've done upgrades up to the current 10.7.4. My original MBP was encountering end-of-life hardware issues, so earlier this year ago I purchased a new MBP. I used the Migration Assistant utility to move my files and user settings. My older MBP toward the end of its life was having OS shutdown / reboot problems. The OS would never completely shut down. It would go to a light gray screen, and the twirling icon in the middle never went away. A manual shut down from the power button was the only recourse. It seems that the problem is tied to issue(s) with my user account settings, since the problem is still present, despite newer hardware.
After I do a manual shutdown/restart, I can immediately perform an OS reboot just fine. But after the OS has been running for hours/days, I can't run a clean shutdown/restart.I'm 100% confident that this is not a hardware issue. I'm comfortable with reviewing my system.log in Console and issuing Terminal commands, if that will help with any troubleshooting.

I have been having some problems recently with my 06 mac mini that i got in august time its the intel one with GMA950 and a superdrive (i think!) lol its the mashita UJ-846 one. Thats what system profiler says at least lol. :-)
Anyways enough about that, for a while now, it wont accept DVDs or CDs in the drive. I have tried to boot off the install DVD and do hardware test, but the DVD ejected. and it just booted straight into the OS..
Is it time to get a new DVD drive? i got a lacie D2 a coupla years back to help with burning DVDs, cos it wouldnt burn DVDs neither, whether thats cos its the superdrive or cos it was failing, i dont know. At the time i searched about and it seemed like it was a DVD drive that was prone to failing on people. Is there anything i can do to test, n see how busted this bad boy actually is??
Its not essential that i need it working as i use the other DVD drive when required. But if i did want to install SL on it, that could be a bit problematic..

I have 2011 Macbook Pro (one of those that usually freezes during booting due to GPU failure). My Macbook will only boot if the GPU doesn't kick in during the start up. (When I'm very lucky the computer will get to the desktop and I can disable the GPU with gfxCardStatus). Sometimes I can boot the machine if I wrap it in a blanket to overheat it. Then it won't activate the GPU during booting if I'm lucky.Â
This is my question: Can I update my OS X if I maybe have to reboot a frozen machine 50 times before I reach the desktop? This would very probably mean that the OS would install and then ask for a reboot. And then I would maybe have to power off and retry to reboot many many times. Would this FUBAR the system. or would it work when I finally got it up and running?Â
Is the update installed 100% BEFORE the reboot, or are some of the updates installed AFTER the reboot? If that is the case, I would think it would have an effect if I had to power down the machine 50 times to get that one "lucky" reboot?

I am trying to update my MBP running Snow Leopard to Mavericks. I have downloaded the Mavericks setup app from the Mac Store, ran it. I have pressed install for my Mac HDD and it says "Your computer will restart". So I let the Mac restart which it does, but then nothing has changed. I just see the my Snow Leopard desktop with no messages or errors.Â
If I run the Mavericks setup again it does exactly the same thing. It seems whatever is supposed to trigger after reboot to continue setup isnt running.Â

I have found my installation of Mavericks losing some preferences after reboot. So far, I have noticed that my entire printer list will go missing and that balance from a previous ban accountreconciliation in Quickbooks will go missing, as well.Â
I have been able to recover the printers by attempting to add a new IP printer. The process will hang at some point. I'll quit all applications and reboot, after which my printer list will have miraculously returned.Â
With Quickbooks, I managed to have the previously reconciled balance reappear after running several previous reconciliation reports.Â
Based on reading around the forum here, it appears that corrupted preference caches may be to blame, but it is not clear to me how one goes about fixing this problem -- or which caches in the library folder it is safe to delete. Â

Getting a very nasty message when trying to reinstall OS on my Mac mini. During disc two it comes up with the message to turn it off by holding down the power. I have also tried to disconnect the power hold it for 5 seconds and reset the SMC. Where do I go from here. Do I need to by a new one?Thought initially it was my hard drive but I changed it and still the same message comes. Is it a kernel problem. A little hard to any "reset" or anything as I don't have any system running on it, or is it?

I have a macmini late 09 and I upgraded the RAM and HDD 2 weeks ago. Suddenly today the mini froze coming out of sleep. O left it for a few minutes but still no luck. Held down the power button and it rebooted. It goes to the apple screen and stays there. I checked the hardware and there are no problems. I then booted in from the older HDD and had no problems. I checked the permissions and repaired them.

This is the second time it has happened, the first was with a powered USB Hard Disk, this time with a WD Elements HD. The first time, it crashed and popped up an alert saying the machine needed to be restarted. After restarting it continued, then around half way through it crashed again. It then would not boot as it said the Mac Mini's HD was corrupted.Tried to repair using the recovery mode, with no joy.Reformatted Hard Disk, went to recover using online recovery, got a 6002F error and it wouldn't reinstallTook to apple service centre, they wanted to charge to reinstall the OS (put them straight on that ).Â
Now it looks like it's doing it again, this time after the first crash I'm just copying the files I need manually to the external Hard Disk, which so far is OK.Â

After a full shutting down the computer we needed to get back on, so on restart it came up to the usual 2 user options, mine and guest.
After selecting mine and entering my password the little Ferris wheel spins as usual but then the coloured pin wheel come up and spins for about 2seconds. The screen then flashes white and it goes back to selecting between the 2 users.Â
I did a Command R restart and went in to Utilities and changed my password (although I was entering it in correctly before) and no change.Â
I am running the latest updated version of Mavericks and have unplugged all peripheral hardware from the computer, followed by a restart and no change.Â
I've even left the computer shut down for 2 days and on our return still the same.

The accounts work fine until I log off the user with "cmd+shift+q". Every second or third logoff the MBP reboots with an error. Where can I find the log files or crash reports to solve the problem?Â

I am using an Apogee Duet with a late 09 Mac Mini, and have suffered through crappy graphics/general performance for some time. I really kinda shrugged this off until getting quite tired of it and did some searching around. After looking around I have discovered that I am not the only one who experiences this problem, and it has been pegged to core audio drivers. Which is odd.Disabling core audio through plists does indeed alleviate the issue it seems. Unplugging the Duet also alleviates this issue. When it is plugged in I see higher temperatures, slower overall performance and very choppy graphics performance, especially in expose and spaces. However this also affects the standard graphics in OSX.

I edit the view options for the Applications window. I make the icons bigger, and I put a photo in the background. The window looks fine until I do a reboot (I don't know about logging out - I only have one user). Then when I open the Applications window I find it has reset to smaller icons on a white background. Doesn't matter what I do when I edit the options. It always looks the same after I restart. I can't say for certain, but I think this problem has been going on since before Mavericks. I thought the cause might be a 3rd party app but I just bought a brand new iMac and the same thing happens.Â
