Mac Mini :: Keeps Locking Up Must Reboot Via Power Button?
Jul 25, 2010
I am having lockup issues with my new Mini. I changed the RAM to 3gb and a SSD. boots fine but completely locks up after a period of use. Only way to cure it is to force reboot via power button. Anyone here has the same issue or know what I should do?

I have just shipped my Mac Mini to its new home and I've had reports that the panic error is appearing on boot up: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart Button." This screen appears on the blue window just after the grey apple screen has disappeared and does not get as far as the desktop at the same point each time. We have tried to reinstall mac OS from the original install disk but holding the "C" Key or the "Option" Key down on restart doesn't boot from disc. Is there a way you can view the Kernel Panic log before you boot into Mac OS so we can try and pin point the source of this problem. I'm wondering if this could have been the result of the shipping that has caused some hardware to come loose.

I have Mac Mini 1.5 solo that work very well for me and my son untill we updated the EFI 1.1 a week ago and never booted back up. I call apple and was told bad hardware maybe caused by update they send me to a Apple store to get it checked but there they said it was the power button not the flash. I had it plug in to the wall the hole time at home but when i took it there it booted as soon as he plug it in so he shut down and it did not boot, he unplug it for a few seconds plug it back no good with button but did boot a few second by itself. I replaced the button my self for a few hunder less then what Apple Was asking for (160.00 less). Still not luck. I feel i got screwed by Apple on this. Has anyone seen this and how it fix.

The only gripe so far with my 2011 Mac Mini is the power button on the BACK of the computer. Really? Everything else I can turn on while sitting in my chair, but I have to get up and reach around the mini to turn it on. I guess I'll have to get an under desk mount and put it close to the front of the desk so I can reach it. Â
Was Apple worried LaCie was going to sue them over design issues if they had a single power button on the front?

I have been trying to reinstall Lion OS without luck. First I tried through the app store, downloaded successfully, but then crashed what appeared to be about the end of the installation. It was at the point of installing the os on my hard drive when the black box style screen came up telling me to do a force reboot. Did the same thing and it locked up again. On a third try I used a Jump drive which had Lion os on it and the screen just sits at the "installing X" screen but its been hours and I can tell the Hard drive is not spinning and it almost sounds like the Mac is asleep.

I have a iBook G4 laptop and there seems to be something very wrong with it. It started a few days ago just randomly. I was reading something on the internet and the screen went black on me, but the power was still on (I clicked CAPS LOCK to see if there was power). I then proceeded to push the power button and the power went off. When I pressed the power button again to turn it on, it made that internal noise it always makes and then the fan came on, and wouldn't turn off. There was no picture on the screen at all. Completely dead. But there was power, because when I clicked on the CAPS LOCK, the light came on). I tried pressing on the power button for at least 15 seconds and even went as long as a minute, and the power didn't go off.

iMac 27 locking up after sleep mode requiring full power shut down and rebooting in safe mode then shutting down and rebooting normally.. Permissions and this check show no errors, the only error sleep mode failure. Boot up is very slow as well as wake up when possible is slow. Yosemite seems to need a new release in order to correct the boot problems. System operates more like a Windows machine than Apple machine what's going on?

I added 2 sticks of 512 to my power mac g5 1.6. I had ahard time getting the computer to see the new ram, but finally was able to kinda get it working after zapping the pram. However my computer only saw these 2 sticks as 256, odd. So i attempted to troubleshoot the problem. I tried just installing the new ram, but the computer wouldnt boot. I tried a few different combos with the other 4 sticks i had, but nothing. I put the old memory back in, and still nothing. The power led looks to blink once every five seconds or so. I tried pressing the pmu reset button, but still the same out come. I also tried taking out the battery, nothing.

I had a weird issue this morning. I started computer and it did not make the chime sound, it didn't do anything at all. I disconnected it from the extension cord as well as all the peripherals attached to it and nothing. I tried a different start up disk and again there wasn't a sound. Then i unplugged it and reset the SMU on the mother board and air sprayed the computer to remove all dust. Then plugged it back and it came back on.

I'm using a B&W Power Mac G3 with 512MB RAM and OS X Tiger for a SMB file server (with 5 users) and a USB printer server. Everything is working good, but I have a problem.
It doesn't have a monitor or keyboard/mouse attached normally (I can configure it via VNC). The problem is that I would like to be able to turn the machine off when it's not needed (like at night sometimes, days when I won't be home, etc.). I would like to just hit the power button and have it turn off, however it puts it to sleep instead.
Normally, sleep would be fine, except on the B&W, the fans still run, just the HDs shut off, so it's still noisy as heck.
Is there a way to make the power button shut it off? If not, any other easy methods of shutting it off you can think of? Via VNC won't cut it, as my dad needs to be able to turn it on (not a problem) or off as well.

I have an old G5 power mac tower. The hard dives were removed and replaced with PCs ones before I was given it. I do not know if they were formatted. I have the original boot up disc and I want to start again with this tower. The tower turns on but does not recognise the keyboard (which I know works) so I am unable to boot from the CD to have a fresh tower.

I picked up an 802.11n Airport Express card for my Mac Pro last week. The installation went fine, but my Netgear router was only 802.11g. So I felt the need to get an Airport Express now that it?s been updated to ?n?. First I plugged the AE into my switch along with my networked printer, cable modem, and Tivo. My 1st gen MacBook showed me full bars and was very happy. My Mac Pro only showed 2 bars. They are side-by-side and about 20 feet from the AE. Strange. I plugged the AE into an extension cord and moved it closer to the Mac Pro. Still, after the AE completes its POST, I get full bars on the Mac Pro. As soon as I hop on the internet, it drops to 2 bars. It?s really weak and pages take forever to load. Sometimes not at all. The MacBook is still fine.
My wife being used to PC nightmares at work suggested that I reboot. ?Heresy?, I said. ?I shouldn?t have to do that. It should ?just work?.? From the Mac Pro, I turned Airport off and then on again. Full bars again. As soon as I hop on the internet, it drops. So what?s up? Much to my lament, I rebooted. Bingo! It works. Full bars, all the time. So I moved the AE back to where I initially had it. (About 5 feet away next to the cable modem and switch. One less extension cord to deal with.) The AE completed its POST, gave me a green LED and I went back to the Mac Pro. 2 bars again! ERRRR!.............

I've had my original MBP since 2007, which was originally on 10.4 I believe. I've done upgrades up to the current 10.7.4. My original MBP was encountering end-of-life hardware issues, so 3 months ago I purchased a new MBP. I used the Migration Assistant utility to move my files and user settings. My older MBP toward the end of its life was having OS shutdown / reboot problems. The OS would never completely shut down. It would go to a light gray screen, and the twirling icon in the middle never went away. A manual shut down from the power button was the only recourse. It seems that the issue is tied to issue(s) with my user account settings, since the problem is still present, despite newer hardware.I'm comfortable with reviewing my system.log in Console and issuing Terminal commands, if that will help with any troubleshooting.

I have a 17" iMac G4 that I was rung Tiger with, then I installed Leopard 10.5. I use this as a second computer. All is fine except that my Epson scanner does not work with 10.5. I've tried the latest drivers. I'd like to reinstall Tiger. I used the 10.5 disc to reformat the drive and start from square one. When I boot from my original Tiger disc it starts opening it's windows, but when I get to the point where I can choose Install or use Disk Utility to reformat from the Tiger disc, all windows freeze and I need to hard reboot from the power switch. Am I correct to assume that 10.5 won't let 10.4 to reinstall. Is this correct?

It has been around 2 months since my Mac Mini started doing this.
I'm on OSX 10.9.2 and there is an update to 10.9.3 to be done.
When I try to update, it instantly jumps to this grey screen and reboot.
And shown and error log window.

This is the second time it has happened, the first was with a powered USB Hard Disk, this time with a WD Elements HD. The first time, it crashed and popped up an alert saying the machine needed to be restarted. After restarting it continued, then around half way through it crashed again. It then would not boot as it said the Mac Mini's HD was corrupted.Tried to repair using the recovery mode, with no joy.Reformatted Hard Disk, went to recover using online recovery, got a 6002F error and it wouldn't reinstallTook to apple service centre, they wanted to charge to reinstall the OS (put them straight on that ).Â
Now it looks like it's doing it again, this time after the first crash I'm just copying the files I need manually to the external Hard Disk, which so far is OK.Â

I turn off Imac, using apple menu. Sometimes the power button will work to turn it on, other times it won't. Been to 2 authorized dealers, they can't find problem. Sometimes jiggling or shaking computer will allow me to start using power button. Sometimes I open up case, plug and unplug everything, and then power button will work. Never know when it will work or not. Power button has had continuity check. It checks fine. Power plug is fine, outlet is fine.

I have a white 2008 model MacBook. Due to some unfortunate tampering with the circuits under the right command key on the built in keyboard, a lot of the keys and the power button are now effectively dead. I'be ordered a replacement top case, but was wondering if I could, in the meanwhile, somehow turn the laptop on. I'd prefer to do this without opening it up, though I could if that's the only way. Â
I read in another thread, can't find the link now, that disconnecting the battery, connecting mains, then connecting the battery would turn it on, but that doesn't seem to work for me.

my power button is constantly pressed. While I was using my computer, the screen got black automatically after a few seconds. After I pressed ESC in order to get back to my desktop, after another few seconds, the window asking if I want to shut down / log out / reboot appeared...When I'm trying to boot my Macbook, after a few seconds, it automatically shut down, without warning, as if I was pressing power button for a few seconds to force the shutdown.I can boot if I remain a keyboard's touch pressed during all the booting process, like Maj, or Alt, but as you could imagine, it's not really easy to use a computer with a keyboard's touch constantly pressed....Â
By the way, I won't go to the Genius bar for a few reasons, first, this Mac is 5 years old, so I'd prefer buy a new laptop instead of paying a few hundred bucks in order to change pieces of this old Macbook, secondly, I don't have an Apple Store near my location.

Yea, my friends find it quite hilarious to push the power button and then pressing enter really fast which results in my computer shutting down.
I was looking for an app that would make it so the power button would only work when caps lock is on or something similar. It's just really annoying.
