How do I format a new (replacement) hard drive without a disk for a 2012 13" Mac Book Pro? I was running 10.7.5 Lion.

I'm selling a hard drive that doesn't work when formatted for Mac so I need to sell it PC format. Will MS-DOS (FAT) work, and does it need to be set to Master Boot Record?
I have a PC I can test it on but I just want to now what to do before I try it out so I don't keep having to switch between computers.
The hard drive is a 1TB Western Digital my book I bought it in January I think. I tried to format it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) when I got it but for some reason every time I try to erase the part thats named disk3s2 or partition the main one it stops a little before half way through. I don't think its the hard drives fault so I called apple about it one day and they helped a little but it didn't work. Thanks in advance if you can help me. Also a few times I waited about seven hours for it while I was at school and when I came home it didn't move.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI received an Acomdata 2Tb external hard drive today from Amazon and plugged it in. Time Machine popped up and I declined to link the hard drive to it. I went into Disk Utility and chose the new hard drive on the left column and went to erase. I chose Mac OS Extended. I named it and hit erase. It started going, and going..... and going... and a half an hour later I knew something was wrong.
Disk Utility was not responding and I eventually had to Force Quit. Now I cannot format the hard drive. I starts and then it stops with a disk error. I tried to run the First Aid verify and repair and both stopped after a few seconds with an error. What do I do?

View 11 Replies View RelatedYeah, I know its probably way too early for me to be asking this question but if I purchase the new MBP (specifically the 15" 2.3 256 SSD) will I (in the future) be able to replace the hard drive with a bigger one? I'm asking because I don't have $3500 to spend on the best optoin available. Some people are suggesting that parts may now be soldered in place to make these laptops so thin.
I'm not really expecting an answer today, I'll buy in the next few weeks, but in case anyone feels like cracking open their brand new baby and telling us about it, feel free to share (and post pictures!)
I just bought a new MacBook Pro. I had a 2010 MBP and kept the hard drive (Hitachi 500gb 7200 rpm) from that computer. It ws running 10.7 and worked fine. It still boots up perfectly on my MacPro so I know it works.
I tried to boot the new MacBook Pro using the old drive but I get a circle with a line through it. I have tried to boot using Firewire and even installed it into the new MacBook Pro. I then tried to re-install OS 10.7. I just downloaded it from the App Store for my MacPro so I tried to use it to re-install. It will not work on this new Macbook Pro. I had to download a version specific to this computer (using the "recover" disk). I takes 1.5 hours to download and then it still didn't work. When the computer reboots after the download and restarts I get the same **** circle with a line through it. The new "manual" is a joke. There is no reference to upgrading drives or memory. Did Apple decide to make their new laptops inaccessible to the owner? I can't find any info online and at the Apple store today they told me they knew of no reason that the drive wouldn't work.

I recently tried to upgrade my original 160GB HDD to a 500GB Scorpio Blue. I formatted the drive to HFS+ and installed Lion on it while it was in an USB enclosure.When i restart the computer, HDD boots off of the enclosure and it is fully functional and I can view it and my original drive.However, whenever I take my new HDD out of the enclosure and install it into my mbp all it gives me is the flashing ? error and it is not visible in boot utility either. I've tried everything I can think of to get this to work. I don't believe it is the HDD seeing as it can boot off the enclosure. What exactly are my options to fixing this issue?

I have searched and googled in different forums and found this issue but never found a good resolution or explanation. many of the posts were related to 2009 or around that time. since yesterday I started to hear a noise like clicking or something (it's a hard disk noise that we all know and have heard) from my hard disk. I have no clue where it comes from. my mac is absolutly idle and no huge process or I/O is going on. its happing once in 10 minutes maybe. Well, I want to start observing it on when exactly it happens! but to me it should not happen!

I'm running Snow Leopard on my new Macbook Pro. I've got a 1.5TB External hard drive that I'm trying to figure out how to format in HFS+ with Apple Partition Map. I can figure out how to format in HFS using Disk Utility, however it still does it in GUID format and I do not know how to do it in Apple Partition Map.
Googleing this for hours has lead with all kinds of information on how to go to GUID FROM Apple Partition Map but not the other way around. I know GUID is the new hottness.. but this drive will be used exclusively to connect to my XBOX 360 and it supposedly only reads HFS+ when its formatted with Apple Partition Map. (I have tried it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID, and the XBOX does NOT recognize it) I do not want to use Fat 32, (I know that that is the other major option) beacuse it limits file size.
I have 2 Macbook Pro's, a 2009 and this brand new one I got today. My external hard drive is a 1 TB clickfree. It has worked for months on my old Mac but when I plug it into my new mac it doesn't even show up in finder or disk utility. I tried the USB ports with another device and they work fine. So it isn't a hard ware issue. The cables are USB 3.0. The external hard drive model number is HD2037N3.I have tried taking everything off (huge pain) and reformatting the drive and still it doesn't recognize it! how I can get my Mac to recognize it?

I have partitioned my external Hard drive into three different partitions, each of different formats. Two partitions for backing up my macbooks and one to copy to and from my windows PC. I want to replace it with a bigger hard drive. Can I put ANY 2.5" SATA hard drive in my 1st gen macbook? Can I put a 3.0gb/s or will only a 1.5gb one work? I bought a WD 320 Gig 5400 RPM hard drive for my new White NVIDIA MacBook. I stuck it in an external casing, copied everything to it with the "restore" feature, and swapped out the hard drives. I rebooted the computer with the new hard drive, and it didn't work. I did some hard drive swapping last year on my old MacBook and everything was a breeze. I don't know what I did wrong this time.

It seems to happen most when I have more than one application running but sometimes happens with nothing running at all. It seems that the screen goes off and the sound skips but the keyboard light is still on. I thought it was because I had a bad hard drive but I replaced it and it still randomly shuts down. I ran smart utility and it all passed. I just don't understand what can be causing this? I take this computer to school all the time and it's kind of embarrassing having this shut down on me mid-presentation.

I bought my Macbook Pro in February or March of 2006 and it's still running strong. The hard drive, however, is full and I'd like to get a new, larger, faster one. I'm aware that I need a SATA drive and that it's form factor should be 2.5". I'm also aware that the max transfer rate for my drive is 1.5 Gb/s, can I use one that is 3.0 Gb/s? I think the current drive is 4200 or 5400 RPM, can I use one that is 7200RPM (this computer is mostly used while on AC power)? What about maximum capacity? Are there any limitations due to BIOS or the motherboard? Here is the drive I'm looking at, please let me know if this will work or if you have a similar, better solution.

It seems that the writing is on the wall for my macbook pro internal harddrive.... Currently limping along but I need to start in safe mode and occaisonally internet boot and run diskutil, fsck etc etc etc.... i bought a 13" Macbook Pro (mid 2009) last week and i bought the 2gb/160gb moel. I have upgraded the memory to 4gb and today my 2.5" sata Western Digital Scorpio Blue (500gb) arrived, i followed the steps and replaced the hard disk, however when i turn the machine on i just get a blank white screen, i inserted the Install disk that came with it and i was instructed by the apple staff to hold the c button to book the disk, this doesn't seem to work, also i cant eject the disc either and i have tried holding down the trackpad while starting up.

I usually work with PCs and am a hardware familar with Macs. I have a ineterested party for the hard drive but they want me to erase the drive and reformat it so they can use on a Mac.
