This has been driving me nuts for a few months now. My macbook keeps emitting a sound very much like static. Only today, I realized that this sound goes away when the processor is working. So if I scroll down in Safari, open a New Folder, etc, the sound briefly pauses before resuming again. Almost sounds like a refrigerator. It bugs me a lot lot. Anybody else having this issue? Or has Apple been able to fix this for anyone?
View 6 RepliesI connected my MacBook Pro to my TV (non-HD) using a 3.5 to L/R composite for audio (from headset hole) and an Apple DVI to S-Video/composite for video. I'm using the S-video part of the adapter. I get good sound out of both channels, but when I connect the S-video cable, I immediately get static feedback from the stereo speakers (the L/R composites are connected directly into my stereo receiver and the S-video goes into my TV).
The video quality is fine when it's connected...
It is also getting warm. The static is continuous and I have turned it off and back on. It starts up again. This just started tonight.

I have a Macbook Pro MC666ll/a. It is a core i7 15" with the AG screen. The issue I am experiencing is a random static noise coming from my speakers every now and then. If i have external speakers plugged in then the sound comes from the external speakers. Is this normal?

My brand new MBP 13" (Mid 2009) makes a high pitched whiny sound that appears to come from the upper left corner ( where the MagSafe connector is). It is not caused by the display because even when I turn it off (the display) the sound is still there. It goes away when I turn off the computer, tougth. Also it's not caused by the MagSafe because when I disconnect it the noise doesn't stop. I have used gogle and the forum search and found people with the same problem. Those people could fix it by starting photobooth. Same works for me. So I guess it's the processor. What I want to know is: is this normal? Because most of the other people who I found who have this problem had a 2006 MBP not a 2009 like me.
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy Powerbook has been making a static-y sound from the back of it at random times. It sometimes won't do it all day, and then it will randomly start, and won't go away for a while. It's actually doing it right now! I've tried putting it to sleep for a few minutes, but it started back up again when i woke it up. There, it just stopped again! It can last from a few minutes to an hour, completely randomly! This problem started when I had Apple replace the logic board on the Powerbook a few months back, and numerous repairs later, nothing has changed, so I'm hoping someone here has an easy fix!
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy mac has worked great for the last 2 years since ive owned it and it just started to act a lil differently about 2 weeks ago. I started to notice that it started to act a lil slower than normal when i was surfing the internet. Then a couple of days ago the computer started making like a buzzing noise , kinda sounds like interference . Like when a cell phone gets close to a stereo system. Sometimes the noise will go away and then when i start opening diff app. that use computer cpu the noise happens again. It was just making the noise and i was dealing with it until the computer started to crash. It would look like the screen was on fire and everything would just freeze. Do you guys think it is the hardrive ?????? and if it was what would be my best option for fixing this. Can i save the stuff that is on my current drive ?? I have a bunch of stuff that is very important on this hardrive.
whats the best place to buy a hardrive if i need one ? and can i buy a hardrive that can hold more than the stock 74.53 toshiba MK8025GAS ?
I'll be using the Air and all of a sudden there will be static or electrical buzzing coming out of the right speaker on my 13" MacBook Air. It's about 16 months old.

Very occasionally the screen on my iMac (early 08 24") goes blank and it makes an incredibly loud static sound that's independent of the volume control setting. The power then needs disconnecting to restart the machine. Haven't been able to tie it to any specific program. Apple Care asked I leave it on logged in on a new user account (at the time I originally thought it only happened in sleep mode, but have since discovered this is not the case).
It's happened maybe 3 or 4 times in the same number of months. I've only found one similar case on the net, with someone suggesting it was Safari 4 beta, which I've found not to be the case with mine. It's on extended warranty. I think there's something seriously wrong with it (it's already had the hard drive and power supply replaced).
I'm getting this softly high pitched sound at idle. I did not have this sound before until this month. I bought this thing in January 2010, yes this year. Does anyone know what could be going on? It does not make that sound when I'm using it, it's only at idle. I can even hear it when I'm lying in bed since this is in my room. Check out my signature to see what I have.
It sounds like a idle fan issue? The computer works fine, but it's just that high pitched noise that bothers me. I should take it to the apple store huh?
I decided to keep my current set up and use my mac mini as a desktop that mostly works as a media server like set up that holds my media for my apple TV if I run out of space on the ATV and later use it as a home theater computer when i get another HDTV. this is just fyi on why I have my mbp and mac mini still yet instead of having only one computer...
I just got my 2.0ghz Alu Macbook a few days ago and everything works perfectly well, the thing is that after day one the magsafe started to emit a low pitched electrical whistling noise. It tends to be there a few minutes after booting into the OS and then it turns down to almost unhearable, but I experienced it returning after a few hours of use and then disappearing again. If I move close to the escape key I can hear a crackling noise emitting from the magsafe.I'm not trying to be overly nitpicky or anything but I read somewhere that if it's doing that it would be a faulty Mag-Safe board or something.
Does any one you guys know anything about this? I have the 14 days to return it as I bought it online from the Apple Store so if it's a faulty part that might die/break/ cause problems later I might have to.
Sometimes I lift and carefully move my 17-inch MBP a short distance to another flat surface without putting it to sleep mode, it starts making really loud mechanical noise when I put it down, so loud that people in the same room can hear the noise and I can feel vibrations too! What causes this? Where does this noise come from? Is my MBP defective?

View 5 Replies View RelatedOn my 13" MacBook Pro, the hinge makes a cracking noise on the right side of the computer (near the power button) when the screen is positioned all the way back.The entire hinge also makes a loud popping noise when I adjust the screen position. The screen seems very tight, and it takes a little bit of effort to move the screen, and when the screen is moved it makes the loud popping noise.
This is probably going to make some of you guys cringe, but sometimes putting pressure down on the top of the case close to where the black hinge meets to unibody enclosure seems to stop the popping noises. Putting downwards pressure on the hinge, or flipping the computer over and putting pressure on it that way, also seems to alter how much popping noise there is.
If I mess around a bit with applying pressure on different parts of the computer around the hinge, I can usually eliminate the noise. But, the cracking noise when I put the screen all the way back is still there.Any ideas what to do? It's not interfering with the operation of the computer, it's just incredibly annoying and this is only a four month old machine which shouldn't be creaking and cracking already.
Has anyone else had problems with an old G3 Pismo making an annoying squealing noise when plugged into a charger? There's a lot of noises mentioned in mac/apple forums but none of them relate to this one. Here's what it is not:
It's not coming from the screen or the fan or the speakers (it's under the keyboard). It's not low or slightly annoying (it is a loud squeal). It happens only when the power adaptor is plugged into the laptop.(it used to cease after I unplugged the power adaptor and plugged it back in three times; now that solution doesn't stop the noise anymore). It charges ok, and runs ok, scream or no-scream. It's quiet right now, but if I move the adaptor to another plug it will start again.
I was going to live with this, but today after an hour of operating quietly it just started again, and I hate to leave the house with this going.(it will scream whether the laptop is on or off. I have a really old battery and cannot replace it (I am currently staying in Mexico for the summer). Battery life is 45 min. I haven't tried pulling the battery out. That would be too easy.
This all started when I bought a replacement power adaptor (generic),after the original one melted down, but I could stop the screaming by unplugging/plugging it in again once or twice. Then I bought an expensive iGo adaptor, and it does the same thing.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI just got my 13in mbp a couple days ago and I've been watching the activity monitor since one of the reasons I got a pro was for the extra ram over the macbook. Mine seems to only have about 2.08 free while I have nothing running except whatever it came with since I haven't installed anything yet. This seems a little low considering the regular macbooks only come with 2gb how could they even run snow leopard? Am I missing something about reading the activity monitor or is there something I can do to free up more ram or is this just normal?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhenever I turn my computer on, it makes the start up sound and acts like the screen will turn on, then it goes black. I can't get it to come out of sleep unless it goes idle. It's like the roles have reversed. The screen turns on when idle, but as soon as I move the mouse or touch a button, it goes black again. It's plugged in, and even if the battery is dead, it always runs when it's plugged in. Also, on the battery bar, it's stuck at 00:26.

I just got my macbook pro yesterday and ran it all yesterday not hearing anything. Today when I woke it from sleep I could clearly hear the fan or hard drive going. I was in a quiet room and it's quite annoying.
istat says its at 2000 rpm so thats when I started thinking it may be the hard disk. It does pulse every now and then but thats even while it's just sitting idle.
I guess I could live with it but its just annoying. Anyone else having this?
I notice sometimes that if I don't type anything with the keyboard for a few minutes, that when I resume typing the computer does not input the first keystroke. Does anyone else have this issue? IIRC, the SR MBP I had before this that I got replaced did this as well.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having a bit of a problem with my Macbook. Once the display goes to sleep, I can't seem to get the screen to come back. The computer doesn't actually turn off, but when I try to get it back with my mouse it goes black. I can usually still slightly see my applications and stuff, and the fan still runs. I end up having to shut it down and then restart it every time. Just wondering if anybody knows how to fix this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm posting this on behalf of my father. He has a 2008 white macbook which has recently started running quite hot (160-180+F), even at idle. It has the latest version of 10.7 installed. He has an external HD with his previous copy of 10.6 and it exhibits the same behavior when booted from that system.He bugs me whenever he has computer problems told me that his MacBook had started randomly shutting down with no warning. I had similar trouble with a MacBook Pro and it turned out to be a faulty battery, so we got him a new battery, figuring it couldn't hurt to have a fresh one with a 4 year old computer. it didn't solve the problem at all.
Later he said that he noticed the computer felt hot, so he decided to run a small fan blowing across the computer while it was on his desk, and that stopped the random shutdowns. So I thought, OK, this is an overheating issue. Maybe the fan isn't working properly, it's full of dust, something is hogging the CPU all the time, etc.
The next time I was at his place I had him install fan control and a temperature meter. We noticed right away that the thing was running really hot. It was at 160-180F while at idle. He had menu meters installed, after a reboot we could see that the processor was sitting at 2-5% load. Not only did the sensors report the high temperate, but I could feel that the bottom of the case was very hot.We decided to open up the case and see if there was dust clogging things up, etc. There was some, but nothing clogging vents or anything. We blew it out nice and clean with compressed air anyway and put it back together. I even turned it on while we had it open so I cold see that the fan was actually spinning, and it was.
I just got my Penryn 45nm MacBook last week and wanted to share some of my observed idle temps.

Northbridge- 39 degrees
How do they compare with the other 45nm and 65nm MBs?
My cpu temp is 56� C idle.

A few days ago my MBP started spinning up the fans like I was doing something really intensive. Only I wasn't. I installed smcfancontrol and it reported both fans at close to 6000rpm (5899 is the highest I've seen it) and a cpu temp of 75 c - 85 c while idle. iStat Pro reported the same. No apps running after a reboot and the fans instantly spin up and the cpu temp hovers around the 80 mark. I'm of the understanding that 50 - 70 is considered normal with the fans in the 2000-3000 rpm range. Yes? Heres a screen cap with only Activity Monitor running. You can see the most intensive process is 3.5% and the temp and fan speed can be seen in the upper right.[URL]

This morning I set to work on my laptop as usual. I typically leave it plugged in while not moving around, and today was no exception. I h ave a 15" macbook I purchased in December of 2010, and it's currently running OS X 10.6.8, if that makes a difference.
Anyhow, when I started up my Macbook and set to work, the battery was fully charged (indicator read that it was fully charge, and that the power source was the power adapter). The power adapter light was green. I then stood up and did some work for roughly 2 hours away from the laptop. When Ieft, I put the display to sleep - In the background the machine was still running a webbrowser (reading an all-text page) and preview (a PDF was open). This is nothing out of the oridinary, and I do it all the time usually.
What was unusual was when I returned to my machine after 2 hours of idling (with the display asleep)Â to find that my battery had been almost completely drained. The power adapter light was now orange, and the indicator showed that the battery was only 4% charged. The power source was still displayed as the power adapter.
I understand that during intense processses the Macbook will draw from the battery AND the power adapter - But my Macbook was simply idling! I can't fathom that a webbrowser and Preview would require THAT much draw for power. In fact, I've run my Macbook MUCH more intensely for much longer periods of time when running Final Cut and Adobe After Effects and NEVER seen this issue before.
Is this an indication of a failing battery? Ever since I noticed this, the charging time indicated has held steady at ~1:13 (that's been about a half an hour now). I don't know if the Macbook will discharge the battery completely every so often by itself, or if the battery is just failing and that's why it went from 100% to 4% in just under two hours while idle.

The fan is almost constantly running, it shouldn't be. The Activity monitor at the moment is showing that 45% of CPU is idle. About a third of my drive is free. I have 500 Gb of SSD, so there are no moving disk heads. The screen is turned up to a level I want to work with. I am running the regular stuff -- Word, Firefox, Mail and other Apple apps, all usual stuff. The MBP sits on a clear glass desk so heat can disburse through the glass, but the fan is still running. The MBP is about two years old. Lion.
