Is there an app that sits in the menu bar to shortcut turning the sleep password on/off? Sometimes when I'm at home i don't want it off but when i travel i want it on.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am new to the Mac OS system and am facing a difficulty.I want to keep my macbook running through the night downloading the updates, however I want the display to be off. For this I have used apps like caffeine and no sleep and have also modified the system preferences. But still whenever I turn off my display, after some time the macbook goes to sleep and all my downloads and updates are paused.
Is there any workaround which allows me to turn off the display without letting the mac to go to sleep ??

What do I do if I have forgotten the password for my Intel iMac? I'm using System X v.10.9.4. Is there any way to get around it and reset it or turn it off?

For the last week or so I've been having an increasingly regular problem with Mail. Upon launching, the app opens a dialog window saying, "Mail can't connect to the Google account 'Gmail'. Enter the password for user (username)." Then when I enter the password, the app crashes. Sometimes clicking the "Cancel" botton allows the app to open, but sometimes that results in a crash as well. Also, when I can launch Mail successfully, sometimes when I try to send mail, the outgoing mail will sit in the Outbox unsent.
I've been getting these warnings with both my Yahoo and Gmail accounts. Until a few days ago I was using Yahoo as my primary account, but the inability to send mail caused me to switch to Gmail as my primary. After a couple days of smooth sailing, I'm now getting the same errors with my Gmail.
i'm typing this with a look of scared-********ness on my face...Ok, so i had my MBP (i think it's the 4,1 model, 2.6 core2duo with 4gb ram BTO) connected to my tv and a couple of external hard drives, set it to sleep last night with the lid open, hit the spacebar this morning to wake it and nothing happened
I disconnected frok everything and tried the following to no avail:-Holding the power button turns it off but hitting it again brings it back to the same state, sounds like it's working but keys don't respond and monitor's off.-I tried resetting PRAM but keys don't respond-Took off battery, held power button down for 20 seconds-Took out the two RAM chips and swapped them around-Tried reconnecting the TV to see if it would re-detect monitors-Closed the lid to see if it'll re-sleep and wake up properly but what it does is that the light on the front lights up but doesn't start blinkingAt this point i can't think of anything else to do so please help me out!I'm taking out both battery and RAM chips and leaving it on the bed in hopes it will lose all charge and memory of this ****-up.Btw, there's no warranty and no applecare on it, if push comes to shove i will take it to an applestore but one: i can't really afford that right now and two: i don't really trust them here in greece
I keep hitting Suspend Activity... to save my old HD... then 5 minutes later I suddenly remember something I needed to do and fire it up again.... I manage to do this about 20 times a day and was wondering if it might be better for the HD to leave it to go to sleep all on its own. Does the physical effort of re starting each time put more strain on my HD than leaving it on. I have an "OLD" Pismo G3 and have night mares about it crashing for good, 'cos i cant afford a new Mac for the moment.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy early 2011 17inch macbook pro wont turn on after going to sleep. So i switched it off and then turned it back on again. the laptop wont boot. No chime, a blank screen and the sleep light stays on. I tried resetting the PRAM and SMC. No luck. So i left it switched off for a couple of hours. Then i tried switching it back on, It BOOTED!
I got my screen replaced last year Under APPLE care. Ever Since that i have been having problems with my laptop. My speakers started jarring and got it replaced, My battery had to be replaced. i did a hardware test and it said i dont have any problem.
my computer doesn't turn off its monitor any more. i check the energy saver preferences, and its the same that i've had them before. the screen doesn't even dim anymore.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought a new mpb , i7. a few weeks ago it turned off and it wouldnt turn back on when i connected it to the power source , the sleep light however kept flashing, and it madethis sound like if it was trying to boot. anyway,i left it charging for a bit and it started working on its own.
however, lately its been shutting down when it runs out of battery instead of hibernating (which is really frustrating). and just now its doing the flashing thing again, cept for a much longer time.. any idea how to resolve this/what might be wrong with it?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI own a MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz and my problem happend like this:Last night I stopped playing SC2 and closed my MBP, then this morning I noticed that while it was closed, it had not gone to sleep mode, or at least that's what I thought, because it was too hot and the fans spinning hard. I openned it and showed no video, but remained on. After a 5-sec power button restart, it flashed the sleep indicator once and did nothing else, except for the HD spinned for a sec.I took the battery off and gave the computer time to cool off, because I sensed it way too hot.After I reinstalled the battery, I was able to turn it on the normal way, it worked just fine, but later I closed it again and when I openned it, it showed no video again.I repeated the process of letting it cool down, but with no effect this time.The sleep indicator turns on once and it does nothing.I tried swapping the memories, resetting the SMC, tried booting pressing control + command + r + p, tried booting without the battery, tried booting without the magsafe, nothing has worked.Now what happens when I press the power button is I hear the HD try to spin for half a second and the sleep indicator turn on once.
View 6 Replies View Relatedmy Macbook (I believe a 2008 model wouldn't wake up from it's sleep like it does every time I open it (I usually set it to sleep rather than shut it down). I turned it off manually, but when I attempted reboot it does either one of two things:
a) When I simply press the power on button, the screen stays black and the sleep light fades on once, but then fades off and all mechanical sounds abruptly stop.
b) When I press and hold the power button, the sleep light fades on, but then flashes about 10 times rapidly before fading in and once again abruptly turning off.
I have tried this with the charger plugged in several different outlets, not plugged into the Macbook, waiting, removing and putting back the battery. A Google search said it might have something to do with the RAM and pushing it back in, but I have no idea how to do that.
my G5 was in sleep mode during 2 power outages. She will not turn back on, have tried unplgging, wait then replugging and turning powerstrip back on. Also tried holding down command,option, p & r keys along w/ powerbutton..I'm on my kindle fire rt now, but definitely need my Mac back up.

The display on my MacBook Pro turn on even though the lid is closed.
1.Sometimes The apple logo lights up and then turns of on itself when the lid is closed.
2. Various times have i closed the lid of my MacBook Pro and then re open it and the screen is still on and it has not entered the Login screen.
3. If i click the Sleep option on the apple menu it goes to sleep, so i close the lid but it eventually wakes up out of the blue.

Sometimes when I open the MBP after it's been in sleep mode, the screen won't turn back on. I hear the disc drive power up, but nothing on the monitor. I have to turn the computer off and restart it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm not entirely sure how long my iMac has been doing this, maybe two weeks? When I try to wake it from sleep, the screen does not turn on. At all. At first I thought this was because my mouse and keyboard might not be functioning correctly, naturally the only remedy was to turn the computer off with the power button and to restart it (which took an abnormally long time). Today I remote connected with Back to my Mac screen sharing and it did not turn on either. I know it was awake because when I pressed the brightness buttons on the keyboard, it responded on my MBA's view of the screen. Normally, Back to my Mac does turn the screen back on. Anyone else have the same problem? It doesn't seem to matter WHEN it goes to sleep either. I've tried resetting the PRAM already and no dice.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThis morning, I synced my iPod with my MacBook and upon completion and permission to disconnect the device, I pulled out the USB cord. At that point the computer instantly turned itself off, and when I hit the power button, I could hear the system trying to start up, but the screen remained black and the sleep light glowed continuously. I unplugged the charger, took out the battery and put it back in, and tried all the troubleshooting tips under the Apple Support guide with no success. I also discovered that when I closed the laptop while it was "on," it would seem to boot up a little more before returning to the black screen. I left it alone for a few hours, and when I tried again to turn it on, it booted up normally and as I was searching for updates, it shut down again as it had earlier.
Does anyone have anything for me to try? I don't want to have to take it into a shop because I can just barely afford to, but I need this computer! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :-)
When I need to go somewhere or just eat lunch, I put my iMac to sleep. After that, when I come back to wake it back up, it stays black.

I was wondering if i need to turn off / close the switch on the bottom of the wireless mighty mouse when my MBP is in sleep mode....it seems that when i don't the mouse still connects and the screen kicks back on for a few seconds.....not sure if this is the case, but the logo on the outside of the case lights back up.

I do NOT use a screensaver so I don't understand what is going on... any tips? I put the screen to sleep after 15 minutes and each time that happens, I have to enter my password to get back in.
