Software :: Unable To Boot After Changing Ram / Beeping Three Times And White Lid Blinking
Jun 12, 2009
I have my laptop which is Powerbook G5 version 10.3.9 Panther. For the last two months the PB didn't boot up and it was beeping three times and white lid blinking. After going through internet i notice the problem was RAM and i need to change it. I bought another RAM 1GB (the old one was 512MB) and inserted it in the lower RAM slot.
Thank GOD the mac boot up properly and everything was fine. I charged it to full capacity and shut it down. The next day i started my mac as usual but surprisingly it beeps three times and it didn't boot up again.I open the RAM cover tried to remove it and replaces it again but it didn't work out and i am totally devastated and i don't know what to do any more. The brand name of the RAM i used is TRANSCEND.

I am running OSX 10.5.8. A little while ago I successfully Boot-Camped my hard drive and installed Windows 7, but i recently got a new hard drive. I copied over my OSX partition successfully, but didn't copy over the Windows partition. On my new drive I went through the boot camp assistant and created a partition and inserted the Windows 7 disc. But when it restarts, it just seems to hang there- it's just a black screen with a blinking white underscore(_).
I have been told that because I copied over my OSX partition it didn't set up the MBR on the new disk, is their any way to fix this? (besides doing a clean install of OSX)
Are there any software or guides available to help me fix this?

The mac in question is a late 2009 27" iMac 2.8Ghz i7, with the stock HD, and graphics options. With 2x 2GB sticks of Apple RAM, and a further 2x 2GB sticks of Kingston RAM. The machine was purchased in March, and has worked flawlessly until 10.6.5
The machine is still in Warrenty, I can take it in if I need to.. but here in Holland that usually means it has to stay in shop for over a week. The closest place to our residence is a long distance and.. yeah, it's just not easy, it really is a last resort.
When we updated it to 10.6.5, it required a restart. Upon restarting it beeped for a number of minutes before it started restarting itself and beeping numerous times before it loaded the operating system. This was two weeks ago.
Since then, when she has tried to boot it it has either:
A) Beeped 9 times, 3 short - 3 long - 3 short;
B) Booted normally without issue.
When "A" happened, she's been turning it off and waiting for a few minutes before trying again. If it did not load first time - after a few attempts, it always booted.
Yesterday I finally had some time to take a look at the problem, and discovered that 9 beeps means there is a hardware issue. Most likely a RAM issue.
I checked the "About this mac" and "more info.." area's of her computer and saw nothing unusual. The machine recognised every part including all 8GBs of RAM.
I looked into information regarding faulty firmware and found nothing solid - so I left it alone.
Today we found that the machine does not boot up at all. Waiting any length of time and trying to boot the machine up again does not result in a successful boot.
I then took the following steps - and got the following results:
-I removed all 3rd party RAM, and booted - received the same 9 beeps.
-Moved the stock Apple RAM into the upper slots - received a single long beep repeatedly. (No RAM detected?)
-Replaced the Apple RAM in the lower slots (where it has always been) - received the same 9 beeps..

I'm a relatively new Mac user. In fact, I haven't had that much experience at all. I work in a donations store and today we got a donation of an iMac. I searched around a bit and I'm sure it's a G5 model. It looks like [URL]. It looks to be in great condition, no scratches, not even a fingerprint on the monitor.
However, when I turned it on, after plugging the power chord in, I started experiencing problems. The fans kicked on and I heard the chime (I assume that was a post?) but I was getting no video and the white LED on the front of the screen was flashing on and off. The exact pattern is strange - I don't think I've see it before. It flashes once, then stops, then flashes again, then stops. Over and over. No sequence. :| The computer did not come with a keyboard or a mouse. I was testing it to see if it actually worked, before I bought the keyboard and the mouse, so I'm wondering if it has something to do with that? I'm not really sure.

When I shut down my iMac and restarted it gets past the apple logo then turns white and starts dimming and then getting brighter but will not go any further.
I tried to reboot in safe mode and it done the same thing. I power cycled by unplugging the holding down the power button.

I woke up to my MacBook fan going nuts. Had an error message on the screen that said something about a disk error. The machine wouldn't do anything (force quit, launch app) so I hard powered down. Now.....NOTHING. All I get is the white screen, followed by the flashing folder. Here is what I have tried so far.
I already booted from the restore cd that came with it and opened disk utility. The hard drive shows up as something like disk1 but not "Macintosh HD."Tried to repair permissions and got an error message. Thought then to do an archive and install......and the HDD isn't even a viable option to install the OS on.
I had the original (but smaller) HDD that came with my MacBook, so I put it back in and everything booted up just fine and is back up and running. (Thank God for MobleMe that had all my contacts, etc on it). But I still have some info on that other HDD that I need. I ordered a usb enclosure for the drive to maybe try some recovery, but it seems to me that the HDD failed or something. Is there anything else I can do?

The other day the screen started blinking randomly. It'll flicker for a few seconds and then go white with vertical grey lines for a few seconds. Then it will go back to normal. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to it. Sometimes it will go through that process for five minutes and then stop. Other times I can be working on it for hours and nothing will blink or act screwed up.

I have a G5 dual 1.8 power PC...Bought some ram put it in & booted up. Then a red light came on the logic board behind the power button. The machine wouldn't turn on....I called apple care & we rearranged the ram, now the red light is gone but my system still won't boot up. The white power light blinks every few seconds... the apple store told me sorry can't help because your machine is vintage. Even if my logic board is fried is there a place to buy one on the cheap?

Just came back from the Genius Bar at Apple Amsterdam. Both iTunes and iPhoto had problems launching and libraries were not loading. Ruled out hardware problems so they tried installing OS Snow Leopard over my 10.5.8 in a way to keep my documents safe. All went well until halfway it said it couldn't install succesfully. Made a new appointment for in 3 days from now. They would then overwrite the current OS with the new one so i should go home and make sure to back up all my files in the meantime. Problem is that when i came home and started my laptop i got a blank/white screen with a blinking documents folder symbol with a question mark in it! Does anybody know what it means and will i be able to ever make a back up of my documents?

I had only Windows 7 on my HDD for the past few months. I wanted to reinstall mac osx so I restarted it and tried to install it on a partition I made in 7 but to no avail. The disc reformatted the HDD as BOOTCAMP with the old data on it and I lost the extra partition. I placed the HDD in an exernal bay that I have. I backed up what I needed and reformatted. It's being read as G: (NTFS) on my PC and it works. I rebooted witht eh DVD in to reinstall MAC and redo the BOOTCAMP system but the blinking folder comes up.

White MB about three years old. Was watching something on Hulu and HDD started making strange noises and screen froze. Forced reboot and only got white screen. Couldn't even get into single user mode. Got a new WD hard drive thinking it would fix the problem. Put in my backup of the Install Disk (lost the original like an idiot) but all it shows when I hold down the C key is a large blinking folder icon with a question mark on it. Still can't get into single user mode. I may have screwed up the backup of the Install Disk or am using the wrong DVD since I forgot to label it.

I've been using my mac religiously on a daily basis for almost a year now. I have noticed that progressively the boot time and shut down time is getting longer and longer. And I understand as I install programs and use the laptop more, it's going to get slower and slower but right now the boot time and shut down time is more than I would expect.
For boot up, the only applications that open on login is Mail and Quicksilver.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the boot and shut down times?

This may be of interest of more of you. I want to be able to read easier when the background is white, especially pdf files, or webpages.
I did not find a solution for certain documents, to change a background without breaking the style. I'm using the lowest brightness but I found its easier to read when I make the background gray, for example in textEdit.
ideas for pdf files ?

I'm having an issue with my PowerBook G4. It wouldn't turn on at all before, so I installed another motherboard. Now it will power on, but it only shows this folder icon that blinks. I'm a complete n00b to macs. If this were a PC I would of fixed it by now. I need some help. I've tried the installation disk, but when I hold down the C key, it takes longer, but it just shows that folder again. When I hold down the Option key, it only gives me a reload button, and an arrow button, but no boot up options. Do you think it could be a problem with this other used motherboard? Or is it that I just didn't put it in right? I've double checked all the hardware, and it seems to be all connected. The keyboard lights up, and the trackpad works, and it makes the boot-up sound.

Recently my macbook slowed down during it's initial boot process. It now takes 42 seconds just for the apple logo to appear. Finally after 1:20 I'm at the desktop. I can certainly live with this but am just curious as to why all of a sudden the initial process has basically doubled (getting to the apple logo).

I was planning to get Snowey and a SSD at the same time, but the latter had to wait. So far, Im seeing at least a ten seconds improvement in boot time with Snow Leopard:
17" Macbook pro unibody 2.93 Ghz, 4 GB ram 7200rpm HD
before SL: boot up from 39 to 55 seconds
after SL: boot up time from 30 to 39 seconds
Ok, so there is no interest in this topic.
For me boot time is a rather important criterium.
And I think the fact that SL reduce this with almost 10 seconds is AMAZING.

In Leopard I had times where I could boot in almost 15 seconds, some times at 21 seconds if it was running slow and for the most part it was 17 seconds. All these times btw are recorded at time of power button press to desktop screen.
In Snow Leopard the times have almost doubled.... Fast boot in Snow Leopard is around 20-30 seconds for me now and a slow boot (which just happened) took a little over 40 seconds.
Anyone else experiencing this? Besides the boot times SL feels a lot faster in system responsiveness than Leopard.

Doe anyone else think that, when booting into 64-bit mode, your boot times are longer? I swear mine are 2-3 seconds longer. Performance seems just a tad bit better, so I'll stick with 64-bit mode, but I wanna see what other people think.
