I had a Windows based PC a couple of years ago that had crashed. So recently i tried to put the files from my old hard drive from my Windows computer to my Mac. In order to keep track of what i have copied and what I haven't i thought it would be good to delete the stuff of my windows hard drive once it was copied. However, it doesn't let me delete anything of the Windows drive since it is set to read only. Is there a way around this? i've tried everything i can think of, but haven't found a soluti
View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried running blackmagic design's disk speed test on our Mac pro ssd boot drive only to be told that the drive was read only. looking at the disk info I saw this:
admin: r&w
system: read only
wheel: ro
everyone: ro
I changed system to r&w to allow me to use the disk test. I would have expected to see (me) somwehere in the access list but I'm not there and I can't add myself. Is there a way to rest the drive's permissions to the default settings? Or what is the best solution to wipe the drive and start over?
I have recently upgraded my computer. My external hard drive, a LaCie 320GB, is full of stuff that I want to get rid of. Can't delete it. Looked into the permissions and it turns out they belong to an unknown user. I tried clicking the little lock and trying to change permissions, but it will not let me interact with the drop down menu. Â
I believe there is a terminal command to reset permissions locally, however, I cannot figure out how to do so on an external drive.Â

I am unable to boot lion from an external drive on both a MacBook Pro mid-2009 and an iMac late 2008. Both have lion installed and I would like to boot from either a FW drive or USB key. I have reformatted both a FW drive and USB and set them to GUID and installed lion but I can only boot them to the Disk Utility App (drive shows up only as 'EFI Boot' when I hold option down).Â
The firmware is up to date and I also reset the PRAM. I am able to boot both computers from an external USB Snow Leopard drive.

I have just installed a 240GB LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbold SSD as a boot drive for my 2011 iMac (which contains only the 7,200 prm HDD). This has improved read/write speeds dramatically. I have transferred all my data and applications to the external drive in order to see the full benefit of the SSD.
However, I had not considered Time Machine. I thought it would simply be a matter of identifying the external drive and then connecting to the Time Capsule. However, the external drive is not visible in Time Machine set up and I suspect there could be a good reason: that it is not possible.
Prior to upgrading to Lion I used SuperDuper to create a copy of the existing internal hard drive on an new external drive (iOmega eGo 500GB). Tested booting from the external disk and it appeared to work correctly. Upgraded to Lion. Several days later attempted to boot from the external disk (by setting the start up disk in the system preferences) but it fails. The system always boots into Lion.
What I've tried: Setting the start up disk through system preferences. Holding down the option key to select a disk on startup - interestingly enough I only see the internal hard disk and a recover HD. No sign of my external disk. Using a clean partition on the external hard drive I installed SL from the retail DVD. This produces the same effect of system booting to Lion on the internal drive, which suggests that the problem is not related to the copy I made using SuperDuper, but rather has to do with the external drive or something in Lion that prevents using an external drive (but I've never heard of such a thing).

So I have an external drive that I want to be able to copy some files to. I use it for my Windows PC, and i have some of it set up for time machine too. When I plug it in, Documents, Pictures stuff show up. I can drag files off onto OS X but I cant drop other files on it. It says I only have READ permissions. How do I change this? Fully updated OS X SL.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have the latest generation Mac Pro with the stock drive. That's the 300GB WDC drive. It seems a little slow in terms of response time and at times loud. I have been eyeing the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000340AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive. I could either replace the stock boot disk with the 7200.11 and use the stock disk as a scratch disk. If so, what it's the best way to move over my boot data from one disk to another? (if possible)
Or I could just use the 7200.11 to store my applications and run them from that disk. Is that as easy to just copy over the Applications to the other drive? PS: I use my Mac Pro for Final Cut for HD (audio/video) editing and Web development (Photoshop, Textmate) and run Windows under Parallels for IE6/7/8 testing.
I have a Mac Pro from 2006, and it has hard drives in all four bays. The first drive is the 250gb default drive from Apple. The rest are Seagate and Samsung. The setup is: 250 (Mac) / 320 (Empty) / 750 (Backup) / 1000 (Media) The 250gb is getting full every once in a while, and I might wish to replace it with another 1000 or even the new seagate 1.5TB one. Whatever .. but since it only has the OS + Program files and some stuff in /home, I want to use the bigger drives for the data. And use the 320gb as the boot drive.
Move (clone) the 250gb to the 320gb Reboot and boot from the 320gb, replacing the 250gb. Which I can then make empty and use until I replace it with a 1000gb drive. I can use CCC to clone the 250gb to the 320gb. But is that enough? How can I then reboot and have the 320gb as if it was the 250gb,. And how can I be certain it is booting from the cloned 320gb, or the original 250gb once I am back into OSX? And can I then repartition the 250gb and still reboot, or will this ruin the master boot record or boot menu setup, etc?
I have no experience with this (yet). And am afraid to end up with a non booting system and a long night of trying to restore using the retail disk for leopard. I hope I am making sense. I just want to move my boot to the 320, and get more space for my boot hd.
After some various installations and file copy from/to external hard drives i ran the repair permissions on the bootup hard drive.
There was a listing about a mile long. Whoa, that does not look good to me.

How many times do you have to run permissions until it just show a few permissions that had to be corrected ? Or is this a sign that the system is in trouble.

I have a external drive that is locked by a permissions error. I need to reset the permissions on this drive. I know it can be done through command line, but I dont know code. Disk Utility only repairs permissions on system files and since there is no system I am hoping there is third party software.

Admin(Write Only Dropbox), and Everyone(No Access)When a user logs into the mac over the wifi, what happens is that even though I have enabled sharing for both users, and turned off the guest account, regardless of what permissions are set for each of these users, "devacct" can see the Movies folder and "house" can see the iPhone shite folder. This is not what I want. What also happens is that when I set the permissions, they do not save even though I click the lock. The extra user permissions disappear and the basic permissions reset to default.

I have a new MacBook Air running Lion. Every time I use my backup software, it changes the permissions on my external drives, and I have to change them from read only to read & write, so I've gotten in that habit. At one point, I noticed that the permissions on my internal *startup disc* were read only, so I (foolishly, I now know) changed the permissions on the startup disc to read & write, with apply to all enclosed items checked. As I continued working, I got messages that a number of extensions could not be used and will be disabled (or something like that). I decided to reboot, so the computer could reset and hopefully correct things.
When I tried to boot, it hung up on the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning clock/gear. I let it spin for a while, then forced power down and tried to boot in safe mode. The progress bar appeared as it's supposed to, but when the progress bar finished, it went back to the grey screen and hung up again. I let it spin for over 40 minutes before powering down, just in case it was doing diagnostics or something. I don't have access to the original OS DVD (nor do I have an optical drive to put it in). Any way for getting the computer to boot, at least in safe mode?
Is it better to boot in Safe Mode in Lion to repair permissions?

I'm having a series of problems. First some intermittent audio problems with Garageband, then, then some external drives won't mount, and now I can't sync to my disk from the iMac. I've run Disk Utitilies a few times and when I do Verify Disk Permissions, it finds a list of things to fix, I then hit Repair Disk Permissions and it fixes them, and then hit Verify Disk, and it say the disk appears ok. When I do Verify Disk Permissions again though, it finds another long list of things to fix. Is this serious? What should my next step be? Should I reinstall the entire system?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a g5 ppc running the newest OSX. Somehow my startup folder got corrupted and my computer would not start up. so I did a restore from time machine. The restore worked ok. I have 2 external hard drives attached to my computer, one for time machine and one for iTunes and movies. After restore and restart my computer said the hard drive attatched could not be repaired by disk utility. I did not ask it to fix anything. Now, I don't have permission to write to my external hard drive on the non time machine hard drive. When I get info, the lock on the bottom is not available, and I can't modify anything. Can I fix this by going into the terminal?

All of the actual MP3s etc are on a separate drive, "Beagle Music". (I have iTunes set to not import and to leave my files the way I have them organized)
I've moved those to a new External, "Beagle Media". Â
I would like to point iTunes to the new drive, and would GREATLY PREFER not to have to rebuild the library files from scratch.Â
I TRIED editing the file path in iTunes Music Library.xml, thinking that would fix the .ITL file, but that is actually the reverse of how it works, so the XML reverted when I restarted iTunes.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is bad and old, and full of lessons about backing up. Anyway, internal boot drive crashed a week ago, and internal optical drive is busted. New external LaCie dvd burner works fine, but all attempts to start up from Tiger, Leopard and Diskwarrior installation disks just end up back in OS10.3 on my external LaCie FW drive. I've tried many things: unplugged everything; switched external LaCie to USB (wouldn't boot), unplugged power from internal optical drive so Mac wouldn't look there first (somebody suggested that). Attempts to start up installers from mounted DVDs result in installer screen with restart button, which, when clicked on, results in... you guessed it... boot back to dreaded 10.3 system. Night owls and westcoasters, I am up for hours yet, pulling hair.

I guess I am looking for a variable for the username, since I will be running this command as part of a shell script. View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an '07 MacBook Pro running 10.5 I was on the desktop and I did a 'Command I' click on the MacHD icon to see what memory was being used and how much was available. While the window was open which displayed the memory, I scrolled to the bottom to the sharing and permissions portion and where it had the everyone box - changed the permissions to 'no access'I then logged out and shut the machine down. Now I try to start up and all i get is the blue screen with the spinning gear. I have tried to start with the shift key down, no luck. I tried with the startup disk and holding the c key then went to disk utility and did the disk repair which came back OK but the disk permission keep failing due to error of underlying task.

I know you can change it by editing the plist, com.apple.backupd-auto.plist. However, I am unable to save it even if I do the following:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI found a strange glitch with file permissions when accessing a network drive, on Lion. I am accessing my internal drive on my iMac over Wi-Fi from my MacBook. I am logged in under my user name. I notice that for every file on the remote drive (on my iMac), "staff" and "everyone" are ready only, but read & write access is reserved for "macports". Macports? It does not list my own name as having read & write permissions, and so I cannot save any file to this remote drive. When I access the drive locally on my iMac, the permissions appear correctly for the same files, i.e. my own name is listed as having read & write access. Is there some kind of glitch where the file permissions are misread when accessing a drive over the network?
