Applications :: IChat Connection - Internet Never Works
Oct 20, 2010
my girlfriend and I live in different cities and our main way of communication is using iChats Video Chat. Before I moved I was on Comcast cable internet and used a Microsoft base station as my wifi router. We never had a problem with connecting to our video chats. She is on Optimum optonline cable internet with a netgear router. Now I have moved in to another place with a friend and we just got Embarq DSL, I am using their 660R router into an older linksys router my roommate had. Now we can never connect to video chat. We alway get the communication error when we try. I even tried hooking my base station up but for some reason I see the wifi but the internet never works for me then. If anyone has any insight on what I can maybe do would be great. I have tried apples test AIM names appleu3test01, 02 and 03. They work for me and I get mac's commercial streaming to me.

I have my old imac and other NB's running on the same home network and they work very fast and work fine. my new imac seems to show the address it's going to but sits there for literally min's before it connects or if it connects.

Everytime I open iChat, it will not let me log in and it says "The host refused the connection" So some people have suggested that I change the port number to 443. Which then I can log in but I can't video chat. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I've run into a problem. My macbook pro running 10.6.4 can no longer connect to the internet with any app but ichat. It is bizarre. I have restarted my computer, released my IP addresses, turned ip6 on and off... nothing works.

A few days ago I installed a legit version of Little Snitch on my iMac. The program and the internet worked fine but the pop ups were just too annoying. I uninstalled Little Snitch using the uninstaller that came with the program, restarted my computer and then my internet was crippled. I could access the internet through Firefox and safari but all other programs were unable to access the internet, including a shell script that I embeded on my Desktop and Azures. After trying everything I could think of, including restarting and looking for /System/Library/Extensions/LittleSnitch.kext I re-installed Little Snitch and all my programs work fine. Any way to get rid of Little Snitch while keeping my internet working?

Every time I go to use the places feature of the new iphoto, it says I must be connected to the internet. I am connected, but for some reason, it does not recognize my connection and therefore will not let me map things out. Do I need to set my internet preferences?

At home I have about four laptops and one desktop computers. All of them use a wireless connection to connect to the internet. Sometimes, one of my siblings is downloading something huge or is downloading torrents or what not and it cripples the speed for the rest of us.
I also can't see if someone has managed to crack my WEP password and is using my connection (a neighbor or someone). Is there freeware that tells me who is connected to my network and how much traffic or data they are using?

I have a MacPro Early 2009, 2 ethernet ports.Ethernet 1 is connected to the LAN and Ethernet 2 is connected directly to a SSL Matrix console (an audio mixer), whom driver needs the used ethernet port to be first of the list in the Network connections list in System Preferences. So when I browse internet I can't use the Matrix's software, and vice versa.I had to create 2 different network positions to browse internet and to work with SSL Matrix, one with Eth 1 first place, another one with Eth 2 first place, and I always have to swap positions. Is there a way to force OSX to use by default the 2nd connection of the list for internet access?

I'm on holiday using my mobile phone (Nokia N80) to connect to the Internet over GPRS / EDGE / UMTS. Everything works like a charm, but often the Internet Connect applet drops the connection and just hangs disconnecting.
I'm running OS X 10.4.7 on a 17" Macbook pro, but I have the same result on a iBook G4, same OS X version, and even trying with a different mobile phone (Nokia 6600) and different network service provider.

I have a linksys BEFSX41 v2.1 router (not wireless, hard wired) router. Ever since I hooked my macbook to it is appears that it drops and the reconnects regularly in regards to iChat. I am using my AIM screen name, and I receive this message "Error: Serv:RequestTimeout" frequently. This makes it tough because I can never tell if the person got my last IM or not, and since my screen name signs off and then back on again all the time it drives my friends insane.
I can get AV chat going, and I can use screen share with other macs. I enabled UPnP on my router in hopes that would work but it does not appear to have fixed it. I tried opening up a port that I heard AIM uses (5190) but that didnt fix things either. I'm thinking opening ports probably wont work since if I can IM people, or AV chat without having opened any ports then the program must be already opening ports as needed on its own.

when I get a picture in Ichat and i go to save it, it auto saves into a weird folder with a name like:
26a786fb-a3cd-4b64-8894-4ed1c716e03c
it's a different name each time i save a new pic, however, none of these folders are available in finder, and there's no directory information. Where are these hidden folders hanging out on my mac? How do I get my old pics?

I don't know if this is due to the MobileMe services being turned off, but I can't get logged into iChat. I haven't tried it for a few days before today though. It keeps my status off line and when I click on the symbol to the left of the status, the error is, "iChat lost the connection to the Mac.com account [URL]. A network error occurred."
I tried my mac.me account, too - still no go. I am using 10.7.4 (Lion) on a Mid 2010 Mac Pro. Nothing has changed (software or hardware) since I used iChat last other than the Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 3.14 back on the 28th. Looking up the error in these forums (and other forums on the Internet), I see a lot for AIM, but they are from months prior and are not applicable. I did try restarting iChat, restarting the computer, and restarting my modem and router (although Internet access was working fine, just not iChat). I checked all the settings in iChat preferences and they look good - Server: api.oscar.aol.com, Port: 443 w/SSL.

I've recently converted the whole family to Macs! So I finally have a use for Bonjour in iChat. We have a cabled network at home using 10/100MB switches (so it aint a gigabit LAN). The connection doctor comes up and says that I can't host a multiperson video chat, because the connection is too slow and also that I can't share my screen for the same reason. The odd thing is that I can share my screen, but it refuses to allow me to host the multiperson video conference.

I really love the magsafe connection. It's very easy and handy. The fact that it works with magnetism is nice. Especially when you accidentally trip over the wire. It will release itself from the computer. But now with the macbook air 11.6" the weight is so low that you will pull the computer with it when you trip over the wire.

I know there are a lot of similar threads all around different forums, but nothing really helped and I was hoping some of you smart ladies/guys can help solve this issue once and for all.
Here's the deal:
My main desktop computer (Compaq windows XP computer) is set-up upstairs where the cable router and linksys wireless router are placed (which is right next to the desktop on the desk). My Macbook (running Tiger and is 3 years old) and iMac (running Leopard and is not even 1 year old yet) are set-up downstairs in my new office. This room is in the basement, however the room is almost directly above the main office where the wired desktop computer resides.
Prior to setting up my office downstairs, my sister lived with my family in the basement and had her windows Vista laptop set-up without any internet connection issues. Her internet never dropped on her laptop, and neither did the connection on her wireless all-in-one printer/scanner/copier. Cell phone reception/internet connection in the basement is also great.
When I set up my iMac and Macbook however a few weeks ago, the internet keeps dropping connection! I do not understand this when my sister had no problems at all with her laptop getting internet connection, when she was living with us. The internet connection will stay good for either 10-30 minutes and then drop, or it could be good for up to an hour and then drop.

I have a studio with a nice desktop with 3 screens. Trouble is, through the winter I'd rather be working near my fireplace. I could move the desktop, and have this huge monster in my pretty room, or I could hook up one monitor to my laptop and use remote desktop. So my question is... how is remote desktop for serious work? Mostly graphic stuff, layout, etc. Would I need an upgraded router for it to work well (currently have only an a/g airport express, maybe need a/g/n?).

Has anyone had this issue? Install windows xp on boot camp SP2 everything installs smoothly but I cannot connect wirelessley to the internet. The internet works via OSX but not the other way around. I always get the following error when trying to connect:
"Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again."
I've tried repairing, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, reinstalling windows, restarting, nothing works. I'm not real good at figuring out IP and such so I have no other idea what to do.

The network diagnostics recognize the internet with the green lights but the airport lights are red... My browsers are connecting to the internet and I am receiving email. The airport icon in the menu is blank and when I open the menu it says "Airport:Not configured"

I just got the new macbook, with snow leopord, and is running on 10.6.2. My internet is really slow when I connect it to my linksys router. It is a wrt54g router. And I am using a WPA2 password. The internet works fine with the three other laptops in my house. But is slow when I connect with wireless to the router. But when I connect to the router with a ethernet cable it works really fast.

My macbook wont load any web pages. It is connected to my wifi network and it says my Internet connection is good under my network settings. All my other devices on the network have no issues (ipad2, 2-iPhone 4's and 2-PS3s). Also when I connect my MacBook to my router with an Ethernet cable it loads any and all web pages instantly. I also tried installing Firefox thinking it may have been an issue with safari. No luck there. The issue was intermittent at first and would require I restart my computer/router and then issue would be corrected. Now the internet wont load any pages at all. I also tried zapping the PRAM, flushing the DNS cache, removing files from the system config folder under Library/Preferences/system configuration and a few other things I can't exactly remember. My MacBook is up to date, my routers firmware is up to date. I even tried tethering my MacBook to my iPhone via wireless Internet and still could not load any websites.
