I am trying to install leopard on an older macbook (white version) which has 10.4.something. I plop the dvd in, it recognized the dvd I double click and hit install, it asks for password and restarts. When it restarts it hangs at the screen where the apple logo is and the circle below it just rotates. It doesn't start to install.
View 4 RepliesThe little progress spinner thing below the apple just spins and spins. The computer said that several apps stopped responding and had to quit after falling asleep watching a movie in VLC, which had error logs that had frozen on the screen as well saying, "Computer too slow?" from dropped frames apparently. Not normal. Also, yesterday, when waking it up from the display shutting down, the whole screen was gray and smeared looking. There was nothing recognizable at all on the screen, and I hit the power button quickly for it to sleep, and back again and it worked fine for the rest of the day. Its a 1.66 Core Duo Mac mini w/ 2gb of RAM.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter recently doing a fresh install of Snow Leopard, it was working great for about a week, and now it hangs at boot and flashes the Apple Logo, a NO sign, and a folder sign. I booted in verboose mode and it say that it could not load drivers.
I had this problem before and I used Leopard's (10.5) Archive and Install feature to fix it.
Where is this located on SL (10.6) ? I DO NOT want to loose my data
I've been reading this site for a while now, first time I'm posting. I recently purchased 8 GB of RAM for my 2010 13" MBP. There are two 4 GB DDR3 PC3-10500 1333mhz sticks. When I install them in the laptop my computer does not get past the apple logo boot screen (the spinning disc freezes). However, I can boot into Windows (boot camp) without issues.
Also, when I pair either of the 4 GB sticks with one of my old 2 GB stock sticks the laptop boots up fine in OS X. The system profiler registers it as 6 GB of 1067 mhz RAM (the stock sticks are 1067 mhz)
I have a much loved ibook G4 14" (late 2004??). It has just died. Well, in so much as it won't boot up. The ibook either gets as far as the apple grey screen and hangs, gets to the login screen and hangs, actually loads up finder etc and hangs or none of the above. Sometimes flashing red, blue green black.
After lots of research online over the past few days I tried the following: I have tried safe mode (not working), starting the command prompt screen (single user and verbose modes), started open firmware, and tried booting from a CD. Nothing works as the boot gets so far then hangs. I have flashed the PRam, resetted the NVRam, and have stopped short of opening up the case to dismantle it!
I just really want to access the hard drive now. I have tried Target disk mode and linked the ibook (pressing T) via firewire to a PowerPC G5, but the G5 doesn't recognise the ibook. System profiler on the G5 shows the target mode connected and working fine via firewire, just the icon for the ibook/target doesnt mount on the G5 desktop so I cant access it.Currently the boot freezes within a couple of minutes.I tried the hardware test CD that came with the ibook years ago, I have also tried booting from an OSX Panther CD. I'm assuming they would be bootable.
I forgot to mention that in linking with the G5 in target mode, a disk that I put in the ibook drive appeared on the G5 desktop as an external drive, therefore I wonder why i cannot see the actual ibook drive mounted. The CD drive works as it mounted on the G5.Does the ibook have an actual PRam battery that can be replaced? Maybe this is an issue?Am I able to actually remove the hard-drive and access it as an external drive somehow?
Over the past month I have encountered a number of bugs with Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro (mid 2006). Ever once in a while, usually during high performance task (like watching flash or encoding with handbrake) the temperature of my cpu will spike to 85-90 degrees celsius and then the system freezes.
During this freeze, I can still move my mouse, but I am unable to click on anything on the dock or any program. Moving the mouse over the dock does not invoke the magnification either. I have to do a hard reset to fix the problem.
Also every once in a while, a long blue horizontal line will appear in on the screen. (sometimes their in iChat windows, sometimes safari, and sometimes the desktop as shown in the photo).
I just tried to update my 2008 Macbook from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Install went fine but all of the sudden I got an error message, accompanied big yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark telling me that the install has failed without any further info. I rebooted and Snow Leopard was trying to install again. I thought 'why not' and continued. Then, when I had to pick a disk to install on, my Macbook harddrive couldn't be found. I thought 'screw this I'll stick to Leopard' and rebooted. After that it just stuck on the grey screen with the Apple and the loading animation. How I can fix this or at least save my files?

With regular startup I get the flashing question mark and can hear the failed hard drive click and spin. After getting the DVD to boot in the drive (it doesn't suck it in right away), I get an apple logo and pinwheel like I should, but after about 30 seconds it goes to a black (blank) screen and the DVD spins down, but not all the way. The computer is still on, but nothing happens.
Oddities:
<>If I start it with an iMac 10.4 DVD I can boot to the install screen just fine, but can't install because it's an iMac DVD. I can erase and partition the drive fine (not the dead one, another one I have).
<>Safe mode boot does the same thing, but takes 20 times as long to boot
<>Retail OSX 10.4 DVD does not boot at all, but that one might be for PowerPC computers. I get the flashing question mark folder.
So, today I tried to install windows through boot camp assistant on my mac. When it got to partitioning my drive I got an error that my hard drive needed repairing. So I opened up disk utility and clicked verify disk (I can't click repair) and got this error Disk Utility stopped verifying �Chris Hard Drive� because the following error was encountered: Filesystem verify or repair failed. I then researched this and learned to fix the problem I must boot from my leopard install disk and use the DU from their. Unfortunately I don't have access to the disk. But I have the install disk from my old macbook (the white one) so I used this. I put in the disk and shut down. When I turn it on I hold C but all I get is a grey screen but with out the apple logo. When I try turning it out holding alt I don't get the option of the CD just Chris Hard Drive. But when I boot up holding D i do get to the hardware test screen but I get the error that's something like "Hardware test does not support this hardware". Will the Leopard install of a different type of macbook not work on my new macbook pro (13" aluminium)?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was installing the Mac OS X Snow Leopard (family pack), haven't installed yet, due to a moving from USA to Brazil. I put the CD on and followed the instructions of installation. After is ready to install, a message showed that would take about 1 hour and 45 minutes. So I left the room and when I came back the screen was bright with an "apple" on it, and its frozen, and I can't take the CD from the slot or do anything in the computer. What that means, did my laptop crashed? I did turn the power off and turn back on, but still the same.

Why is my Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.8 IMac screen all white when I turn it on? There is no spiral and no Apple logo and the desktop does not appear. The screen is just white.
Prior to this, we had a wind storm in our area with some power glitches today. After one of them, the dock items disappeared and just the wallpaper was there. The colored spinner began going around when I clicked on the mouse but nothing was happening. I unplugged it to try to reset it, but now the screen comes up all white, there's no apple logo that appears at start up and that's it. Now what should I do?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 13" mid 2009 MBP and due to issues with the superdrive I decided to buy the OWC data doubler kit and install it with a 120GB SSD from them. I also upgraded to 8GB RAM at the time but I do not believe that has anything to do with this. After I did this, my original HD freaked out and wouldn't even show up in target disk mode. Eventually I made a clone of the Snow Leopard install disks onto a USB stick using a friend's laptop and installed OSX fresh onto the SSD. Luckily I had a backup of everything so I have not lost anything. Even with the fresh install, however, I am having a lot of issues with the OS. When I try to boot the machine, it often takes 3, 4 or even 5 times to boot normally. As far as I remember, booting into safe mode works right away but that is obviously not a solution. Usually it starts by hanging at a blue screen once or twice, then I can get to the login screen but it is either kind of grayed out or it just freezes and I can't even move the mouse to type in my password. When I do safe mode it boots up without this issue, but even after that I often see the computer freeze up during use, which happened the first time I wrote this post. This problem also occurs when waking up from sleep. If the laptop goes to sleep by itself or I close it, I have to power cycle it to return to use. The keyboard will light up, but the screen never comes on so there is no way for me to log in. These issues are extremely frustrating and make me feel dumb for doing this in the first place, considering that everything worked ok before(minus the superdrive). Has anyone seen these issues before? Resetting PRAM and booting into single user mode are not helpful, I have tried them many, many times and I see the same issues. I saw somewhere else that I should try to remove the fonts, startup items, and loginwindow.plist files/folders and put them on the desktop, but even after doing that the issues persist.

It won't leave this screen. Stayed there all last night. Every time I reboot it goes here and won't advance. I can't eject the disk either.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI am looking at purchasing an Ibook G4 but the description of the item includes this:"When you switch it on it begins to load up i.e. the blue screen with the Apple logo, but then the screen goes black or flickers. Said friend has kindly wiped the hard drive for me so now when you switch it on it makes the �opening� noise then you get a blue screen with alternating �?� and the Finder logo."
I have a feeling this may have been a temporary fault with the screen connector being loose and possibly damaged.But i assume the alternating "?" and the "finder logo" is simply a lack of OS?
I was trying to install Windows XP Pro, but for some reason the it wasn't showing another HDD to install Windows on. So I quit the install, and restarted my computer. Now all that happens is the normal grey screen appears (with no Apple logo), then it goes to a black screen and has the blinking cursor (Kinda like DOS).

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have just updated my iMac G5 to 10.5.6. When I restart, it hangs on the blue screen before log in. I have restarted in Safe Mode (no problem there) and removed the APE files in the library folder, as suggested on support.apple.com. I have also repaired permissions and verified the drive. Still no luck.
Is it really possible that the computer needs hours to restart after the update? And would it be better for me to restore using Time Machine or do an Archive & Install with the Leopard discs? The computer was acting a little funky before I updated to 10.5.6 (iTunes was sluggish), but I never had a problem rebooting.
I have an old Macintosh II that someone gave me. It powers on but when it gets to the gray screen right upon startup, it hangs there and never shows the "?" Anyone knows why it does this? What can I do about it? Thanks.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook Pro 2.16 C2D that I just updated with Leopard. I noticed that occasionally the computer will hang when I attempt a shutdown. I didn't have this problem with Tiger so I assume it's a bug in Leopard. When I try a normal shutdown all I see is my desktop wallpaper and that little circular animated icon. I have to hold in the power button to force a shutdown.

This happened after one time when I forced shutdown after I thought my macbook crashed. I've read from past threads this is possibly to do with hardware problems, but I can still boot to bootcamp windows (which I am currently using) and all seems to work fine. What can I do?
View 3 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has a black MacBook and it stopped working. When I switch it on there is just a grey screen with the Apple "doing" but then nothing happens. I tried some key combination to reset the NVRAM but it didn't help. The MB was purchased around 2 years ago with the Apple Care extension of + 2 years so it still should be covered by Apple Care. My questions concerns the Apple Care since I don't know how it works: - my friend says that he just bought the Apple Care extension when he ordered the MB and that"s all. Does it need to be somehow "activated" so that the MB is covered ? He has the Apple Care box but he never opened it. - Does he need the MB order bill to make Apple Care work ? - The MB was purchased in France but he's now in Germany. Can we just bring it to a Apple store here?

It was rebooting with no problems until this morning I tried to boot Mac OSX 10.5.7 and it hangs on the blue screen with just the pointer and a message telling me that spotlight has quit unexpectedly. I have tried switching to safe mode and still have the same problem and I have also tried to repair the disk on Disk Utility but it tells me that disk appears to be ok. I could reinstall Mac OSX but I don't want to loose files and music that I have on Leopard.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter what seemed to be an improper shutdown my Macbook will not boot. I have tried using fsck to no avail. Booting to the leopard dvd causes it to restart. Flashing PRAM doesnt seem to help and it will not boot into safe mode.
