OS X :: Apple Grey Screen And Hangs, Gets To The Login Screen And Hangs?
Jul 13, 2010I have a much loved ibook G4 14" (late 2004??). It has just died. Well, in so much as it won't boot up. The ibook either gets as far as the apple grey screen and hangs, gets to the login screen and hangs, actually loads up finder etc and hangs or none of the above. Sometimes flashing red, blue green black.
After lots of research online over the past few days I tried the following: I have tried safe mode (not working), starting the command prompt screen (single user and verbose modes), started open firmware, and tried booting from a CD. Nothing works as the boot gets so far then hangs. I have flashed the PRam, resetted the NVRam, and have stopped short of opening up the case to dismantle it!
I just really want to access the hard drive now. I have tried Target disk mode and linked the ibook (pressing T) via firewire to a PowerPC G5, but the G5 doesn't recognise the ibook. System profiler on the G5 shows the target mode connected and working fine via firewire, just the icon for the ibook/target doesnt mount on the G5 desktop so I cant access it.Currently the boot freezes within a couple of minutes.I tried the hardware test CD that came with the ibook years ago, I have also tried booting from an OSX Panther CD. I'm assuming they would be bootable.
I forgot to mention that in linking with the G5 in target mode, a disk that I put in the ibook drive appeared on the G5 desktop as an external drive, therefore I wonder why i cannot see the actual ibook drive mounted. The CD drive works as it mounted on the G5.Does the ibook have an actual PRam battery that can be replaced? Maybe this is an issue?Am I able to actually remove the hard-drive and access it as an external drive somehow?
PowerPC :: Load Up The Blue Screen With The Apple Logo, But Then The Screen Goes Black Or Flickers?
Feb 4, 2008I am looking at purchasing an Ibook G4 but the description of the item includes this:"When you switch it on it begins to load up i.e. the blue screen with the Apple logo, but then the screen goes black or flickers. Said friend has kindly wiped the hard drive for me so now when you switch it on it makes the �opening� noise then you get a blue screen with alternating �?� and the Finder logo."
I have a feeling this may have been a temporary fault with the screen connector being loose and possibly damaged.But i assume the alternating "?" and the "finder logo" is simply a lack of OS?

Jan 28, 2010My screen just started to occasionally have a flicker of a white line show up...It doesn't happen that often, should i worry? Is it worth taking it into apple? (Under warranty still) Since its not consistent i wont necessarily be able to show them what its doing..

Apr 20, 2012Last night I was working in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop when my screen began to flicker like crazy and eventually froze. I could still move the cursor around but nothing would work. I couldn't force quit any of the applications or shut down the system. It eventually shut itself down and after restarting everything seemed normal. About 20 minutes later it did the same thing as I was switching between Safari windows using Expose'. (I recorded a small clip of the flickering and put it on youtube if that helps: [url]...?v=UBjRwRu4IOg ) After the second time this happened I again tried to start it up and it loaded to a gray screen, no startup chime, no apple logo. Nothing. I hit the power button and it shut down again. And the next time it booted all the way. I then shut it down with the intention of calling Apple Care today but apparently my Apple Care ran out in the last month or so. So, I'd have to pay $49 to talk to them about this issue. I thought I'd come here first.

I used wet ones which have alcohol so I wasn't worried, but also wasn't careless.
I once got a screen that said I needed to restart my computer. So I did.

Aug 13, 2009Whenever I move my macbook on my desk with the lid open, or when I open the lid, or when I close the lid, my screen flickers to black and then back open many times. Is this a weak connection some where? Sometimes the screen will stay black until I move the lid a little bit. I bought it refurbished from Apple this spring. I do not have applecare.

Aug 18, 2010I bought a 22 inch monitor. its a pretty generic brand, but its very high resolution and works great on other computers. i got the vga adapter for my aluminum macbook (i posted in this section because its closer to the 13" mbp). i have an apple keyboard connected to it. i try to use it in clamshell mode and when i press a button on the keyboard to wake it up the screen just flickers as if its trying to adjust the resolution. strangely enough, it works perfect in mirror mode. anyone have an idea?

MacBook Pro :: Screen Flickers Black For Short Moment On Switching Graphics
May 9, 2010I just got a new MBP i7, and whenever the graphics switch from the Nvidia 330m chip to the Intel chip, the screen "flickers" black for a short moment before reappearing. Can anyone with a new MBP comment on this behavior? It doesn't happen on the switch from Intel->Nvidia, just the other way around.

Jun 19, 2008So I've had my 24" Al iMac ever since November 2007, good and everything until the past couple days, after extended use of the imac, everything is fine, screen is great, but when entering screensaver, its still great, its like a couple minutes or so into the screen saver when the top of my iMac's screen starts to flicker! When I move the mouse to get out of the screen saver, every thing is back to normal. It happens with all screen savers.

I plop the dvd in, it recognized the dvd I double click and hit install, it asks for password and restarts. Dec 31, 2008I have just updated my iMac G5 to 10.5.6. When I restart, it hangs on the blue screen before log in. I have restarted in Safe Mode (no problem there) and removed the APE files in the library folder, as suggested on support.apple.com. I have also repaired permissions and verified the drive. Still no luck.
Is it really possible that the computer needs hours to restart after the update? And would it be better for me to restore using Time Machine or do an Archive & Install with the Leopard discs? The computer was acting a little funky before I updated to 10.5.6 (iTunes was sluggish), but I never had a problem rebooting.

Dec 27, 2008The little progress spinner thing below the apple just spins and spins. The computer said that several apps stopped responding and had to quit after falling asleep watching a movie in VLC, which had error logs that had frozen on the screen as well saying, "Computer too slow?" from dropped frames apparently. Not normal. Also, yesterday, when waking it up from the display shutting down, the whole screen was gray and smeared looking. There was nothing recognizable at all on the screen, and I hit the power button quickly for it to sleep, and back again and it worked fine for the rest of the day. Its a 1.66 Core Duo Mac mini w/ 2gb of RAM.

Mar 26, 2009A friend of mine has a black MacBook and it stopped working. When I switch it on there is just a grey screen with the Apple "doing" but then nothing happens. I tried some key combination to reset the NVRAM but it didn't help. The MB was purchased around 2 years ago with the Apple Care extension of + 2 years so it still should be covered by Apple Care. My questions concerns the Apple Care since I don't know how it works: - my friend says that he just bought the Apple Care extension when he ordered the MB and that"s all. Does it need to be somehow "activated" so that the MB is covered ? He has the Apple Care box but he never opened it. - Does he need the MB order bill to make Apple Care work ? - The MB was purchased in France but he's now in Germany. Can we just bring it to a Apple store here?

Jun 11, 2009I installed the 10.5.7 update yesterday on my iMac and had no issues with it. It was rebooting with no problems until this morning I tried to boot Mac OSX 10.5.7 and it hangs on the blue screen with just the pointer and a message telling me that spotlight has quit unexpectedly. I have tried switching to safe mode and still have the same problem and I have also tried to repair the disk on Disk Utility but it tells me that disk appears to be ok. I could reinstall Mac OSX but I don't want to loose files and music that I have on Leopard.

Feb 10, 2006My IBook G3 will not start up. I can get the gray apple screen with pinwheel and then after a really long time it will go to a blank blue screen. A couple times it went to the login screen instead but in the user id it says "other" and when I try to enter my username and password it won't recognize me. I am a college student and one of the Apple geniuses here did a check of my hard drive and it checked out okay. We were not able to get it to start up in safe mode; it seemed like it was starting in safe mode but then it came to the login screen and would not allow me to login with my usual information. I was able to start up in single user mode and run fsck which found a couple things and after another fsck it said everthing was fine. But, it still gets hung up at startup. When I try to boot from the OS X installation CD it doesn't seem to be booting up with it, it only goes to the screen to install OS X. According to the directions on the Apple support site when I insert the CD and start up holding down the "c" key it should start up and then I should be able to repair permissions but I can't get that far.
