MacBook :: How Do I Make My Wireless Router The Default Network?
Mar 11, 2008
Tried googling this with no luck. I'm new to the mac/laptop world. My new mac keeps picking my neighbor's network over mine. It (obviously) fails to connect to the neighbors router coz password is required. I then have to scroll down a list of networks and instruct my computer to connect to my router. Is there a way to simplify my life...

I just recently got Verizon Fios internet. I am having a problem with making the router they supplied my default router.I am not trying to piggy back or connect additional routers. I just want to use the Fios router.Prior to Fios, I had Time Warner and i used my own router and as soon as I opened up my macbook, it would immediately find that router as my default. Now, with Fios, when i open my "Airport" icon at the top on my screen, it NEVER choses my Fios router as my default, making me change to it every time i want to use my internet after opening up my computer.

I have just got my 1Tb time capsule and there are a lot of confusing descriptions of how to connect it.
At the moment I have just selected "join existing wireless network" which is a ADSL 2.4ghz G Router that came with my internet package (Thompson TG585 v7).
Does this mean that all traffic goes via the ADSL Router and that I will not be using the 5ghz band when I back up so that all the data will follow a path like this and have slow data rates? :
MAC --2.4ghz--> ADSL Router --2.4ghz--> TC
or will I be communicating directly with the TC at 5ghz for backups and data transfer and 2.4ghz with the ADSL router for internet like this? :
MAC --5ghz--> TC
ADSL Router --2.4ghz--> MAC
If this is not a good setup, what setup would allow me to get the full speed to the time capsule and be connected to the internet.

I just purchased my new macbook pro and I wanted to know if it was possible to use the laptop as a router so that my PS3 could connect through it. I followed the steps someone else mentioned:
(1) Open System Preferences on your MacBook Pro, and open "Sharing"
(2) On the left column, click Internet Sharing and check the box
(3) Use the drop-down menu to select Ethernet in "Share your connection from..."
(4) Check the box next to Airport in the section "To computers using..."
(5) Close System Preferences and open the Airport menu from your Toolbar (top)
(6) Click "Create Network", add a name to your Computer-to-Computer network
(7) Leave the Channel as Automatic, add a password if you require (make sure your PS3 is compatible with your chosen level of security), click Ok.
(8) Connect an ethernet cable between your broadband modem and MacBook Pro
(9) Turn on your PS3 and perform your usual setup when connecting to a wireless network
I have an Ipod, and it did detect the new connection that was setup; however, my PS3 and my Windows Mobile phone did not detect it. Is there a reason for this? Do only Apple devices identify this connection?

I have a Linksys Wireless Router and a Linksys Modem, the router is 6 years old or so 802.11b, how much faster would the Internet be if I had a combined Linksys wireless router/modem versus the 802.11b that I have now?
Would I see a huge difference? I am running my Macbook off it and an olde Toshiba laptop.

I have the newer, rounded model Verizon FIOS router.
There is a USB port on the back and I was wondering if I could use that to somehow connect my WD HD to it so that I can use it wirelessly for Time Machine back-up.
I would buy a Time Capsule or Airport Extreme, but the Verizon router is the central hub for my Internet, cable, and phone. And of course I'd save about $200 if I can do this too.

I am recently bought my mother a macbook and everything has been going great except for one thing. Everytime we turn it on I notice that we are on another wireless network that isn't hers. I looked in the Internet Network System Preferences but I couldn't find anything. How to change the default wireless network in Mac OS X.

After extensive Googling, I need to take a break, and find out if someone with more experience knows what I can try next...
I'm not the best when it comes to Networks, or even router configuration. I'll just put that out there, in case I've missed something obvious.
My router connection (DLink 2640B) was working perfectly fine before I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Now I cannot connect to any wireless network, and I cannot connect to the router administration page, either
(192.168.1.1).
The internet connection still works fine on two other laptops. Also, I can connect this iMac via the ethernet cable.
I've tried deleting the files NetworkInterfaces.plist, com.apple.network.identification.plist, and preferences.plist; I've tried rebooting my router; I've tried creating a new network. Airport sees all the networks, tries to connect, then it just says that it fails.

I have a MacBookPro that I use in my room connected through ethernet. I am at university and they have only allow one machine to connect to their wi-fi that is available across campus, through mac address filtering. I also have an iPhone which I would love to use wi-fi on, at least while I am in my room lounging around and such. Anyway, the point being, can I use my MBP (connected through LAN) to act as a router so that my iPhone can connect to it? Essentially create a wireless network, so iPhone would find it and I could go online on it via wi-fi?
I tried going on Airport and clicking on "Create a network" (w/o a password), but I get an error saying "There was an error creating our Computer-to-Computer network." It doesn't say much else -- is there a better way of doing this?

I have an airport extreme base station (wireless n draft). problem is, my room is all the way in the back and i get poor reception. Can i just buy another standard $40 wireless G router and "extend" my wireless network? if so, how easy would this be to accomplish? would it be as simple as hooking up the $40 router with my airport extreme using via ethernet cable so that it extends it? update: I am looking at this router...would this accomplish my purpose? I live in a two story home, with the only ethernet port located on the ground floor. I like to play PS3 online, so I connect it directly to my router on the bottom floor. I would like to be able to move the playstation upstairs, as the tv is much better, but theres no ethernet port. Is there a way to use my MacBook Pro as a wireless access point for a PS3 without having to connect anything directly into a port?

I have a Macbook Air Rev.C 1.86GHz and just yesterday, it stopped connecting to my D-Link wireless router. There have not been any updates applied to the router or the Mac recently, nor have I installed any apps to the Mac either. My iPhone sees and connects to the router fine, as does my MSI netbook, and my TabletPC too. I have turned the router off numerous times in trying to troubleshoot this, and only for a minute or two, does the Mac see the router and connect getting an IP. It then loses the connection shortly after. I have turned off the Mac's Airport a number of times, I have reset the SMB (I think, using the ctrl/shift/option/Power button while off, letting go, then pressing the Power Button only).

I'm going to buy a Macbook Pro (13") in two/three weeks. Now I've been lurking these forums for some time now and I read there were some problems with the Belkin Routers. I own a Belkin G Wireless Router F5D7234-4 (this one: 1012107496.jpg), will that router work on my soon-to-be-Macbook Pro?

So I recently bought a Linksys WRT160N to replace an old router in my house. The network worked fine with the old router before it died... Browsing speed was great, download speed was great. Now that I have the WRT160N however, my network speeds have plummeted. And it's JUST my MBP... the rest of the computers in my house are Windows PCs and they are surfing away at supersonic speeds compared to what I'm getting on my MBP.
At first I thought it may be the wireless security (WPA) so changed it to WEP... no change. So then I just disabled it altogether... no change.
The Windows PCs are getting speed of about 2000 Kbps whereas I'm getting between 150 and 500 Kbps. I've already replaced the router once...
Is there anything I can do, or is this router just not going to play nice with Mac?
BTW- I have a 2.2 SR MBP

I need alittle help and hope that someone maybe able to answer. I have a pc ( HP pavillion ) hooked up to a D-link Wireless G Router WBR-1310 and it works fine. I bought my wife a Macbook pro and it hooks up to my secure wireless router, but at times it will become very slow, and even stop for her when shes on the net. I can be sitting next to her with my HP and no problem with the signal at all. Can anyone suggest any ideas? I'm hoping to get a Macbook for myself soon and would love to be able to get this problem corrected before I do.

My son and I both have Mac Book Pros and a wireless network running at home. We have Snow Leopard, and Comcast 12mb cable internet. I currently am using a 2 year-old Linksys WRT160N router going through my own Motorola Surf Board SB6120 modem. It's been fine the last couple of months after the switch from AT&T, but every now and then, it seems to lose the IP addresses and connection, so I end up having to call Comcast to reset them from their end. I'm beginning to thing that perhaps it's time to get a new router. What is even stranger is that sometimes I still have service and my son, 20 feet away in his room, loses it or vice-versa. What are your esteemed opinions on this? Do you think it's the router or some setting? If it is the router, what do you all recommend in the way of a dual-band, perhaps dual radio, wireless N-router?
