OS X :: How To Best Secure Laptop Data In Case It's Stolen?
Jun 4, 2007
I have a MacBook Pro and I'm wondering what I can do to secure the data the best I can in case it's stolen. When I had a Windows Laptop I had a password to log on. I know someone could still get into it without too much trouble with a reinstall of Windows, going through DOS, etc.
My question, what is the best way to do this on a Mac? I set up a logon password so when my screen saver comes up in a minute of no use it requires a password to get back in. Yet all someone has to do is a restart and for some reason it goes straight into OS X without asking for a password. Is there a way to change this?
Is it possible for me to somehow encrypt my data to somehow further protect it? Of course I don't want to do anything that will slow my system down.
I am looking in to getting some protection to recover and make life hard for a thief, if my MBP should get stolen. I found several products doing a search. They are for example: GadgetTrak Laptop Security, Hidden, LoJack for Laptops, Rest safe.with any of these products, or other ones, that you would say is a good investment and worth it. Or possible other ways of doing so that I did not think of. I have installed MacKeeper, and now am in doubt whether I should lock my Macbook Air (but then I can't erase the contents anymore), erase the contents (but then I am afraid MacKeeper, who is supposed to take a picture and send it, will also be disabled), or do nothing and trust MacKeeper
i have been asked by the police to find out if there any way to find two mac laptops that have been stolen.they have itunes and icloud on them... can we turn them on by remote computer.they also have find my phone app?
My Son had his MacBook Pro stolen. He asked if he could track it down through the Internet. I searched online and found some suggestions for tracking software. Not knowing who to trust I thought I would bring this to Discussions: Can it be tracked if no tracking software was installed? What are some preferred tracking programs to install on a new machine to allow this in the future?

Recently My MAcBook Pro 13" was stolen. I have importan archives inside Time Machine (from the MacBook pro 13) and now I want to recover just some iles from the stolen MacBook to my IMac using Time machine.
I am not currently a Mac user but I am using an Airport to connect to the internet using my Gateway laptop. My question is this - my son (who is a Mac user) left his airport behind when he left home, and it works great with my Gateway. However, it is unsecured and I can't figure out how to secure it. Do I need him to do this from his Mac?
I'm not sure what case to buy for my 13" Macbook Pro. I want to be able to hold a mouse, charger, itouch and possibly a CD holder. I would prefer something under $40 too.
I just bought a brand new 15" Neoprene Sleeve for the MacBook Pro in "muted cyan" or blue as i like to call it. On the first day i brought it home, something got on it, so i (stupidly) licked my finger and tried to clean what it was off. well that didn't work and now i have like... wet spots on the case. Has this happened to anyone else? And does anyone know how to fix it? Also, i'd like to point out that the inside of the case is like... a fur kind of thing, and i don't know if i should put it in the wash because of that.
I dropped my MacBook Pro only about 12 inches and the corner of the shell where the Magsafe connector is located was bent slightly inward. When connected to the AC power there is enough power going through to run the laptop. However, the battery is not charging and now has no green lights when I push the button on the battery. I checked and the battery has been through 129 cycles so should still be good. I'm assuming that means something was damaged with the Magsafe connection when the corner was dented. Does anyone have any advice? How much it would cost to repair the Magsafe connector? My MacBook Pro was purchased in 2007 and I have no other issues with it. Would it be worth repairing or should I get a new one?
If I clear free space on my hard drive the OS is on the hard drive will still be fine. Also will it get rid of all my sensitive data that was not erased through secure erase.
I want to back up data from my ibook. I have tried to burn backup data on a CD-R, but have not had much success. I have tried to follow the instructions of creating a blank image, put information into it, then burn the disk. But I keep getting the message that " this image is in use" When I put a disk in, It is ejected because "image is in use" What am I doing wrong. Also what type of external flash drive or etc, could I use to back up the information of I can't burn a disk successfully?
I've got and OLD Toshiba Satellite 2100 CDS running windows 95. It actually still works. I need to get some files off of it, it's got is one usb port, another port I don't recognize, a floppy drive, and a CD drive (can't burn). I've tried just using a usb stick, but the Toshiba wants a driver to use it. I tried connecting to the internet with it through the usb, but it also wants a driver for that. This computer is set up for connection through dial up only. I don't have a modem capable of dial up.
my few months old 13" macbook pro (4gb ram, 500gb hard drive) was destroyed by liquid damage the other day . i was told the hard drive may be salvageable and that it would be easy enough to install in a new macbook by myself. however, i've been thinking of using the cost of a new macbook to buy a second- hand macbook pro instead. i presume i wouldnt be able to install the old hard drive on a macbook pro would i? if not then how would i transfer the data to it from the old one?
just bought a new MacBook Pro, and I have my 3 kids' profiles on Rosetta Stone on my old iMac that I'd hate to lose. Has anyone found a way to move profile data/progress? My Google Fu has let me down.
Recently my macbook pro was being fussy, and eventually failed to boot (get grey screen with apple and load bar, but doesn't completely load before shutting down). I did a recovery boot and tried to repair the disc, which didn't work.Â
I would like to pull all of the User data (music) off of the old hard drive-and move to an external hard drive- before erasing and reformatting (might not be the correct term). I am currently running 10.9.4 mavericks and optical drive pooped out a while ago.
I just bought a new macbook, but have a ton of photos stored on my old mac. What would be the best option for transferring only the photos (no other data) to the new macbook? Migration assistant or just manually with an external hard drive?
Info: MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
Suggested to move the original files to the EHD and leave the referenced files on the laptop to save space and still allow edits. My question is, if you are using Time Machine, what is it backing up on the LT and how do you apply this to the data on the EHD?Â
What I am trying to achieve is to move my Aperture library to an external HD. and clone it to a second drive and backup the laptop with Time Machine. After the next session I would again clone the 1st drive and rely on TM to continue to backup the LT.Â
My Mac book pro got damaged and no longer works properly. I believe that the hard drive is fine. Is there a inexpensive method of extracting the data from my intact hard drive?
There have been a number of laptop thefts at gun/knife point in my neighborhood recently. I'm backing up all my data frequently, but wouldn't want a thief to have access to my personal information like bank statements, personal pictures, etc, stored on my laptop. If I set "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver" in Security of System Preferences, does this really mean there's no way for somebody else to gain control apart from re-formatting the drive?
