I have a MacBook Pro and I'm wondering what I can do to secure the data the best I can in case it's stolen. When I had a Windows Laptop I had a password to log on. I know someone could still get into it without too much trouble with a reinstall of Windows, going through DOS, etc.
My question, what is the best way to do this on a Mac? I set up a logon password so when my screen saver comes up in a minute of no use it requires a password to get back in. Yet all someone has to do is a restart and for some reason it goes straight into OS X without asking for a password. Is there a way to change this?
Is it possible for me to somehow encrypt my data to somehow further protect it? Of course I don't want to do anything that will slow my system down.
I have a EMac with Mac OS X vs 10.3.9 Prior user erased hard drive. Took to ADR data recovery and they scanned the hard drive and were unable to recover any data. Looking for input on other techniques to recover data from hard drive or other companies that specialize in Mac data recovery.

Need some help here. My friend is a DJ and had an external drive with tens of thousands of songs on it. The plug broke on it and I think that corrupted it since Eject was not used. I pulled the 3.5in HDD out of the case and hooked up up with some other external plugs I have.
When I run Data Rescue 3 on it, it shows that it sees almost all of these and the only two formats it counts up are mpeg and mp3s. Data Rescue then finishes the scan and has a bunch of crap files that are not needed, but none of the songs show up. What is going on here? Did I miss something in Data Rescue 3.
The drive is a 1TB drive and the backup drive we are using is 640GB, but there was only about 250GB of music on the drive to begin with.
i have been asked by the police to find out if there any way to find two mac laptops that have been stolen.they have itunes and icloud on them... can we turn them on by remote computer.they also have find my phone app?

My MacBook was stolen so I thought that remote wiping it was a god idea. I didn't realise I would lose the ability to locate it! It has now connected to a WiFi spot and been wiped, but I would really like to locate it so that I can let the police know.

I have an external drive I used for backing up my mac and was therefore HFS+ formatted. Having had my previous mac stolen I want to recover my files from this hard drive.
For some reason however, the file system seems to have corrupted itself. The drive cannot be read from any mac. I have managed to acces the drive using transmac on a PC but macdrive won't read it.
In the disk management panel of a PC the drive is identified as having a RAW file system.
Any ideas on how to recover my data?
So to make a long story short I have a hard drive with 1.5tb of data I DO NOT want to lose, and when plugged in it looks like the attached picture.
A format that my mac can't read, and I would obviously like to recover this data in the cheapest way possible.
I don't know if this is enough info so if you need more I have a great long story how this all happened.
my HD stopped working for whatever reason. i got the folder icon when i started my Mac mini that day and did lots of troubleshooting with no luck.
i ended up putting a new one in and all is fine now. EXCEPT all my pics and whatnot is on my old HD. is there any way possible to recover the data? what are the possibilities of getting the data over since the old HD stopped working? ive seen alot of those HD to USB data recovery connections to transfer info but dont know if it will work?
I have a LaCie Big Disc Extreme that has failed. The drive indicator flashes continuously, and the disk utility can not see it. I have tried FW800 and USB to no avail.
Here's the problem: it is a 500 GB drive, but when I opened it, I found that it is actually 2 250 GB drives with an ATA interface. Is anyone familiar enough with these drives to know how they are formatted, and how to recover the data? I am running an early 2009 Mac Pro 8x2.26GHz.
As I was trying to install Arch Linux on my Mac (dual-booting), I accidentally deleted my Mac partition! To add insult to injury, the version of linux I downloaded was the wrong one, so I couldn't even have that. I reintalled Mac 10.5 (I have the 10.6 cd, just haven't reinstalled that one yet), and now I want desperately to recover from the old partition.
View 10 Replies View RelatedSo unfortunately, the hard drive on my 2005 G5 crashed, atleast that's my guess. All it does is click when I attempt to turn it on. I'm fairly good with computers, but when it comes to fixing one - I hand it off to someone with a little more knowledge.
I have two hard drives in the computer - one that's got the OS installed (factory 150GB), and another I use for saving videos, pictures, music, etc (750GB). Now, I'm assuming that because the computer doesn't boot up, that the hard drive with the OS is the one that crashed? Is that a safe assumption?
Secondly, is it possible to recover the application files and other data that's been stored on the crashed drive? If so, how much should I expect to pay? Is it something a local 'work from the home' computer tech could do? The reason I ask is because craigslist is full of guys willing to work on the computer for a decent price.
would need some help on this matter.
- It's on an external hdd, 1tb Western Digital MyBook hooked via firewire.
- It's a folder containing music (MP3 + FLAC).
- All the data in that folder is gone, 0 file, tried on my Macbook and Windows desktop and both came out with the same result.
- External HDD is NTFS, using Paragon NTFS on my Macbook.
- The data are still in the hdd, just that it doesn't show any data in the folder, because the space used is still there + the songs still play on my media player library list.
So main problem here is, how what do I need to do to view the data in that folder now.
Is there any way or program to recover data from an external hdd with a ntfs-structure that has been deleted using ntfs for mac (paragon) on osx?
I have tried several windows apps but i'm only able to recover the files that have been deleted in windows, the files deleted using osx don't even show up in the applications.
I formatted a mini-DVD of my webcam by mistake. I did a 'quick-format'. Do you know a good software (if I have to pay it's ok) on OSX to recover the data from it?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm so desperate for my hard disk. I have recently lost the partition table on a 300GB Samsung Firewire drive which contains my works. I would like to try to recover the data from this drive, but I can find no (command-line or otherwise) to do this. I have got 5 Journaled HFS+ partitions in my external hard disk.
Before this problem exist; I selected the fourth partition which capacity is 56GB, and choose 'Erase' with as a disk type 'MS-DOS File System' with Mac OS 10.4.11. But Disk Utility failed in 3 seconds, and gives an error. Then all my 5 HFS+ (Journaled) partitions stopped mounting and is not even recognized by Disk Utility which says no partition map found, and drive is unformatted. And isn't even recognized in Disk Utility which shows only disk name.
I think my apple partition map table corrupted by Disk Utility. All my data still in hard disk, but I don't know how can I mount them again. Disk Utility's verify and repairs buttons doesn't appear for Samsung HDD in Tiger & Leopard. I used some applications for repair my hard disk and partitions. But all of them are failed. Desperately seeking a way to repair or recreate corrupted Apple partition map.
Please, could you help me for mounting my 5 partition in my hard disk. How can I have got my all data again?
I have a friend who's mac has corrupted files and no longer boots. What is the best way to recover any data or backup the drive and run a install?
Or is it possible to save his current install? I'm not sure if you could just recover using his installation disk.
I have a clients compy they reformated it and killed their data... if i usb their drive?
I tried researching but can't find my answer...
A friend emailed last night saying he had a drive that had been 'acidentally formatted' (that's a lot of accidental mouse clicks if you ask me), that it took 2 seconds to format so it should have not actually wiped any data on there.
I've used Disk Warrior in other circumstances but never tried on an initialised drive. Nor would I know how to get a copy of such old software.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what software from that time might recover the data?
Long story short I dropped my 500GB Maxtor external HD (which is really just an internal HD in a chase). The drop was about 3 ft. It was not on so I don't think there will be much damage to the disk, but it no longer mounts. I was wondering if anyone could think of a way to get the disk to mount so I can recover files saved to it. I have Tech Tools, and Data Rescue II to recover the drive but as long it is not being recognized by the computer those applications are useless.
View 2 Replies View Relatedmy imac crashed last week but thankfully i had back up of all my files via my western digital my studio hard drive. thankfully right? well i royally screwed up and while trying to fix my crashed hard drive on my imac, i guess i accidentally reformatted my external drive, deleting EVERYTHING
I am pretty sure that I can go to a vendor and have them restore the HD correct? If so, what does something like that cost? I had probably 50 gigs lost, mostly photos, MP3, AVIs, and programs.
How to recover data from a mistake overwrite files???
I used a macbook pro with Snow leopard 10.6.1. It was an accident, I copy all files in folder from Ext. HDD to a folder in macbook.
But I've made mistake. A name of folder on Ext. HDD was same as a name of folder on my macbook. While I'm busy, It was an accident. I push enter button to overwrite data.
A 7 GB folder has changed to approx. 2 GB folder.
In this case, Does anyone know how to recover my data. It's an important data, I've done it for a year.
I tried to use data rescue 3.0 and file salvage. But a search result of these 2 programs show me some thing such as 'Pic001 to Pic15555' , 'autocad 001.dwg-autocad 30000.dwg' ,001.pdf-11234.pdf'.
My hardisk is 250 GB but a search result is 300++ GB. I can't find a file that I want to use.
In this case, Is there any program that easy to recover my data???
