OS X :: Disk Utility - Adding Partition Without Erasing Disk?
Nov 20, 2009I have a 640GB external USB hard drive that I use for time machine currently. I would like to go in and add a partition to load movies to and plug it into my PS3. Can I use disk utility to create a new partition without erasing the stuff already on the disk?
And then is it possible to format a partition larger than 32GB as FAT?

Nov 21, 2008I installed Ubuntu on my iMac, and it made 2 new partitions: DISK0S3 and Linux Swap. Here's what my disk utlity looks like: When I try to remove Linux Swap, it says that the partition (map is too small. When I try to remove DISK0S3, nothing happens and it keeps running forever before I press +Q to quit.

Mar 31, 2009I've been backing up my Powerbook G4 for a few months using Time Machine to an external firewire drive with two partitions; one for the backups, and a much larger one for all my music, video, pictures, etc. I got a new mac mini over the weekend and I want to format the Time Machine partition without erasing the one with all my other files so I can start backing up the Mini.
Is this possible using Disk Utility? If so, how?
Both computers are running Leopard.

I just bought a new WD hard disk and backed up all my data to it (80 GB). I then performed a clean install on my Macintosh HD.
Before I restored my data to the internal drive, I thought it would be a good idea to copy my fresh installation to a new partition on the external disk.
So I booted up disk utility to check if partitioning would affect my data. Using the partition tool, I clicked the plus sign (without applying changes). Disk utility said that if I add a partition, it would simply add a new volume and that the previous volume would not be erased. I clicked apply, and now there is nothing left of my data in the original partition.
Can I get it back? Undo the partition, or file recovery?

since Tiger reads NTFS partitions i was going to try it on my Mac Mini.
i usually use a laptop and don't have time to leave the recover running for 10 hours or more. any good free utilities out there?

I've got a 2TB external drive with about 1.5TB of movies, Music etc. I've got another identical empty drive that I want to keep a backup of the first drive on. So my question is what is the best way of backing up this data? I thought of using disk utility(I'm running snow leopard 10.6.4 if that makes any difference) to created a mirrored RAID set. If I plug in the empty drive then create the RAID set will my first drive get wiped when the set is created? or with it leave the data on the first drive intact? Or should I just use something like crashplan to backup to the 2nd drive?

Jun 11, 2012Since I activated FileVault 2 on my Mac boot drive without initializing it, I'd assume that the same thing could be done for any other drive. I've got some external drives with hundreds of GB of data which I'd like to encrypt. Disk Utility lets do it by erasing the drive and encrypting the data written afterwards.
Is there any hidden feature that allows one to convert the drive without erasing it first, like the FileVault utility did for the boot drive (even when working on it!)?

I've found that I have to format to FAT32, which I think i can just about manage (yes, im a girl) but my concern is, if i format through the MAC, will i then lose what's on the hard disk as the tab says 'erase'? I have a lot of images on the hard disk so am a little petrified! Any advice for this really basic question would be appreciated!

Apr 27, 2012I did the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion. I've been having random issues like it seems to go to sleep (all monitors go black) and when I close the lid; the light goes on (but doesn't blink like normal sleep). Or during wake-up from sleep, after everything appears, it does the same thing. The only thing I can do it hold down the power button, wait, and restart. Today I'm on my 4 1/2 crash/reboot. (.5 because during a reboot, it locked up again.) I was thinking that maybe a re-install might fix something, but I'm not sure. When I originally did the upgrade, I had a DisplayLink driver installed which Lion moved to the Unsupported folder; don't know if this is part of my problem or not.

Jun 2, 2014I tried to install Mavericks and it told me my disk had been damaged and needed to be repaired. I took it into the Genius bar, he wiped my disk and told me when I got home to plug in my backup harddrive and click restore and it should be resolved. But I did the restore, created a new profile and everything and I can find my backup folder because my harddrive is plugged in, but don't know how to get everything from that folder back onto the computer, and back in its rightful place. i.e. pictures back in iPhoto, songs back in iTunes

Jun 4, 2007I have a MacBook Pro and I'm wondering what I can do to secure the data the best I can in case it's stolen. When I had a Windows Laptop I had a password to log on. I know someone could still get into it without too much trouble with a reinstall of Windows, going through DOS, etc.
My question, what is the best way to do this on a Mac? I set up a logon password so when my screen saver comes up in a minute of no use it requires a password to get back in. Yet all someone has to do is a restart and for some reason it goes straight into OS X without asking for a password. Is there a way to change this?
Is it possible for me to somehow encrypt my data to somehow further protect it? Of course I don't want to do anything that will slow my system down.

Oct 7, 2010After I erase the hard disk it shows 74.5gb free, almost. It says there is 42.3mb of space being used by 2 files which I understand are used for read write or partitioning or whatever.
When I then leave disk utility and go to the actual installer, the destination disk (untitled - 74.5gb) shows only 73.9gb free space. What is taking up an additional 500mb of space on the hard drive?
Apple support told me that somehow the disk has been altered and I lost space on the disk or I am now using a seperate partition that isn't showing up. Disk utility shows only one partition with 74.5gb free space. He told me I can find information about how to 'merge' the disk on the apple support section under troubleshooting articles for disk utility. I have been unable to locate this information.

Apr 24, 2012I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!
Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'. And it needs to be reformatted. It's become a read only disk. When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question. I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969! These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.
I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure. Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state! Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive? And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

MacBook Pro :: Folder With Question Mark At Startup - Disk 0 Showing In Disk Utility
Jun 24, 2014I get this question mark along with a folder when starting up. I tried holding down the option key when turning on the power and then I get an internet recovery along with a globe. I click on the arrow below it and it takes maybe 15 minutes to start up. Then i get this disk utilities screen. I'm now unable to do anything. When going into disk utility, disk 0 shows with Mac OS X base system underneath it. All the clickable buttons are faded out. Is there something wrong with the hardrive? and where could i get this fixed? There isn't a warranty on it.
