OS X :: Will Resizing Partitions Erase Data
Sep 19, 2009
I have a 700 GB external HD with a 349 GB MacOSX Extended (Journaled) partition, and a 349 GB FAT32 Partition.
I need to shrink the FAT32 partition to make room for another smallish HFS+ partition so that I can back up my virtual machine (around 30 GB). My question is whether resizing the FAT32 partition in Disk Utility will harm the data in either of my existing partitions. I understand Leopard to have an on-the-fly partitioning ability, but I wasn't sure whether this applied only to certain file systems.
I am running OSX 10.5.8.

I know there are already a ton of threads like this one out there, I was just getting a lot of conflicting data from them, and didn't really want to screw this up... Well here's the problem. My HDD is currently divided into two partitions, I am trying to shrink the 2nd partition, and expand the 1st without losing the data on my 2nd partition. Is this Possible?
I've tried VolumeWorks 1.5 from a bootable DVD but for some reason when I open it and select my hard drive, the left column where a list of my partitions should be is blank, and all the buttons on the bottom are blanked out except "close" and "rebuild".
I was going to try booting from CD and running disk utility to accomplish this, but most of the stuff I've read says that shrinking a partition with DU will erase the data. ?

I would never opened a topic like this if I had not a similar experience with expanding 'dmg' in the past!
A truly bad experience! It is supposed that using 'disk utility' I can resize-expand-make bigger any dmg file. Every time I tried it, it was a totally fail process. The 'disk image' dmg did not resized at all.
I do not know why, it just happened to me many times.
Does anyone had similar experience? Any solution to this? So if I have a dmg that need to be bigger, I create a new one from scratch and I copy paste files from the old dmg.I need to do the same with hard disk partitions, using disk utility once again. I need to resize my hard disk partitions.Does this process works well as it should be, or it is a bad-implemented feature?

I have 2 versions of OS X running on my mid-2012 MacBook pro. They're on separate partitions. I want to put everything into Mavericks and just use Mavericks exclusively.Â
Can I simply open the 'disk' (which contains the partition with the other OS X installed on it) in Finder, locate what data I want to copy and put it straight back in to the Mavericks partition (copy and paste) or do I have to put it on a removable hard drive while booted in to the other partition and do it that way? Â
Ideally I want to get rid of the other partition with the other version of OS X on it. Can I safely destroy that and re-allocate that 100GB back in to my Mavericks partition without any issues or will it have an effect e.g. loss of data/settings even though all my data and applications with the exception of anything I created while using the other version of OS X on the other partition... which I understand would be lost if I formatted the disk or deleted the partition without saving a copy of that elsewhere first. Â

Every time I try to erase music from my USB Key or Phone.
You can see that the music or files have been erased, but it doesnt free up and space. When you pop the USB Key into the stereo or play music on the phone, all the files are there.
I have to go through the Disk Utility option to erase stuff, but this erases everything. When you erase on the PC, everything is fine.

I have a mid-2007 20" iMac, 250 GB hard drive, 4 GB memory, and it runs Lion.I understand I will have to reboot the computer with Snow Leopard, since Lion is non-transferrable, but do I do this after I've deauthorized iTunes and done a 35-pass wipe of the hard drive? Also, do you recommend that I add biogradable peanuts to the inside of the box (I have the original) before shipping it, or are the Apple-provided styrofoam bumpers that fit on each corner sufficient? It's going USPS to a military base overseas.

I'm in the process of selling my iMac G5 (I'm getting a new iMac). I've got all my personal data backed up onto an external hard drive. The question I have is regarding my G5 - what's the best way of deleting all my personal data on it? Should I reinstall Tiger using the CD that came with the system and do a complete "Erase and Install", or is there a simpler way?

How do I recover the data after erase the Macintosh HD disk and also reinstall the system? My laptop could not be turned on last Wednesday, but I needed to finish up my assignment and submit on Saturday.I searched online a way to keep my data but the laptop could be fix up.
Under disk utility, I erased the Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then reinstalled the system. It's said that in this way my data will be all kept, but when I finally got my laptop turned on.All my data was gone including my files, applications, and so on.

My MB Air is not booting (I get the ever gray Apple logo screen with the spinning wheel, and nothing happens) Following instructions I found online, I tried the disk utility repair disk and permissions and, apparently, there's nothing wrong. Still, the system won't boot!Â
I'm now trying to reinstall Mac OS X Lion, but the system requires about 0.5 GB of additional free disk space to install!Â
Is there anyway I can access the OS terminal screen (command line interface), so I may delete a few files, creating additional disk space?Â

I have an iMac 2.4ghz with a 320g hd, that I partitioned 50/270 when I installed Leopard. I read somewhere to have the opp system partitioned and I have been kicking myself in the rear ever since. Too many apps and files want to run next to the opp system, so I'm starting over.I used time machine for a backup of the system (both partitions are showing) on my 1 TB iomega external hard drive (minimax). I partitioned the external 500/500, time machine/additional storage. So that is what I'm working with, now for the question:With my backup complete, if I do a clean install to the internal hard drive (320g) in order to remove the 50g opp/sys partition and just have one 320g internal hd; will my time machine be able to restore to a clean 320 without having the 50/270gig partition setup? If so will this be a somewhat simple process?

I just booted into Windows and saw that there were some Windows Updates available and it asked me to reboot the computer however it failed to boot into Windows. So I restarted and tried to boot into OS X instead, but that didn't work either.
So I put in the OS X install DVD and checked out Disk Utility. Turned out that all my partitions where screwed up. There were 3 partitions listed as Windows_ldm, with incorrect sizes (I had 4 partitions before).
Long story short: I'm now reinstalling OS X and I lost everything I had on the drive, I think. I'll try some restore software once I've gotten OS X installed.
A little pissed right now... How the heck can Windows F up the entire drive?

I just deleted Windows Partition 30g on my Macbook.
If I resize the MAC one to fill that 30gig back up will I need to backup? I know I know you should always back up but does it intentionally remove data? Or is it straight forward?
Just asking before I do this in Utility.

Basic question, had a photo sent to me that I wanted to make a hard copy of but when I clicked on print only the top of one person's head appeared on the hard copy, I tried down sizing but all that happened was I got a smaller picture of the same person's head. Not sure what program I should use or exactly what I need to do to get a correct sized print.

Can this be done? I have a lot of pictures in iPhoto 08 that I want to reduce in size to 800x600 to fit on a SD card. I can resize them one at a time, but does anyone know of a way to resize many pictures at once? It would sure be a timesaver for me.

I am trying to get rid of a dock annoyance:
1. Put your dock on the bottom of the desktop, in auto-hide mode.
2. Open an app, say Safari.
3. Resize the window in order to get to the bottom of the screen.
4. Hide it (cmd H).
5. Restore it (alt tab).
6. Now the window has been resized on its bottom border by a few pixels (because of the dock position).
How do I avoid that ? I'd like to use all my pixels.

I participate in several forums where I often post pictures of things. But the photos have to normally be less than 100KB. I don't have any purchased photo editing software yet for my Mac, is there something in iPhoto or somewhere else that would allow me to resize a photo for posting? If there's nothing on my machine that will do it, does Aperture have such a function?
