OS X :: How To Decrease The Magnification Of Fonts
Aug 12, 2009
Accidentally i hit something that increased the magnification and font size on this window.. while im typing.. how do i decrease it... its so big its ridiculous.. must be something you hit to increase and decrease the size..
man its hard navigating first time on mac after years of pc usuage... wish i had you all here
I have a Macbook Pro with a 8600GT, my dock magnification in 3D isn't smooth (lags behind the mouse a little and is choppy) whilst in 2D is completely smooth.
To add insult to injury, my friend's Macbook Unibody with 9400m has uber smooth dock magnification in 3D and my friend's macbook pro unibody has the same.
Why does my 8600GT which is supposedly just as fast as a 9600GT and mch faster than a 9400m so mind numbingly slow?
Yesterday I was using the Vista side of my 2.4Ghz 15" MBP most of the day, and then I switched over to the Mac side last night. I don't know if being in Vista for that long is what caused this -- probably not -- but I do know that I usually don't use Vista that long at once. But anyways, here's my problem:
When I got into Mac OS X yesterday, it started getting all funky on me. First of all, my dock. When I roll my mouse over the dock, it doesn't magnify at all. I have dock magnification turned on about 1/2 of the way over, and yet it doesn't react to my mouse at all. Also, when I click on an icon to open it, it DOES magnify that icon (and the ones around it) temporarily as it "bounces" to indicate the program is opening. Then I move my mouse away, and the magnification stays there for a few seconds! So my mouse is back in the middle of the screen but the icon is still frozen as enlarged. It goes away after a few seconds, but not with the usual smooth shrinking animation (it just instantly is smaller). Lastly, the program I open from the dock does NOT come to the forefront. For example, I just opened TextEdit from the dock to remind myself of what happens, and it opened behind Firefox, not in front of it. So to actually go get TextEdit, I have to Command+Tab and get it. So those are my dock problems.
Also, my menus are acting funny. You know how, usually, when you open a menu from the bar at the top of your screen (sorry, not sure what it's called, I haven't been a Mac user for long), and you move your mouse over the options, each individual option highlights in blue? And when you move your mouse over an option that has an arrow to its right to indicate a sub-menu, the sub-menu pops out on its own? Well, neither of those are happening anymore. In fact, when I click the option that has an arrow, the whole menu just goes away as if I had clicked away from it or something.
Lastly, my hot corners aren't working. Simple as that. I have bottom left set for Dashboard, and bottom right for Expose, and neither respond at all.
To recap: a lot of the very basic functions I rely on in the Mac OS X side of my computer just stopped working for me and I have absolutely no idea why. And as a side note, I had not downloaded the MacBook Pro Software Update before this started happening. When it started, I immediately downloaded the update but it didn't fix it.
So I'm trying to see if a lot of people use the dock hiding or Magnification feature or not! If so, why do you guys use it? Also what model of the mac do you guys use? [to see if a correlation exists between screen size and hiding, Magnification is just for aesthetics].
fonts must be messed up in Snow Leopard. Some system things display strange fonts. For example, my user name in upper right hand corner of the screen doesn't look right.ALso, the font on the "tabs," in Safari is not correct, and I can compare it to other SL computers.
I have recently got some awesome collection of font from URL but as first time mac user i dont know how to install them on my mac book . I need to install them as quickly a possible for my designing project .
I just got a replacement Ati radeon 3870 because the first cards fans didn't run at all for a minute or so and would then spin up full for 30 seconds or so and so forth, regardless of what i was doing.
My replacement card came today but this cards fan runs full all of the time?
Surely this is a driver or fan control issue or something, my previous nvidia 8800GT was silent all of the time, but alas I could not play Call of Duty 2 with that card hence the switch.
Is there anything i can do to help cool the card besides fitting aftermarket fans which i don't feel confident doing and they don't seem to support the 3870 100%.
Maybe open up the PCI slots or upping the Mac Pros fans via SMC Fan Control?
Or do i return it and switch back to a 8800gt and forfit Call Of Duty 2 or wait and switch it for a 4870?
I'm going to try and live with the fan noise tonight but does anyone own a quiet 3870?
For the record I'm running a 2008 2.8GHZ 4-Core Mac Pro with 8Gb of Ram and 10.5.6. I tried a clean install on a new hard drive and the card behaved the same.
I have a 15" MBP 3,1 (Sept 2007) Intel C2D 2.4GHz, 4MB Cache, Santa Rosa, 4GB Ram, 500GB Storage @5400RPM, GeForce 8600M GT 256MB VRAM) I am a student (returning to school) and so I qualify for the Adobe discount for the Creative suite. I already have CS3 (Master Collection) and am considering buying CS5 (Design Premium). I was wondering if I should notice any performance decrease/increase and any general thoughts if it's worth it or not.
I'm trying to find a keyboard shortcut to decrease font size in a specific third-party app, Skim (a PDF viewer/editor), and command+- zooms out of the slide instead of changing font size. Any ideas?
I have a 15 inch aluminum macbook pro, Snow Leopard and recent updates all installed, but i noticed something on my friends 13 inch macbook pro that mine doesn't do.
On my friends, when you press the screen dim/bright button (F1, F2), its a gradual transistion, but on mine it just jumps down a notch.
For example, when you hold down the dim button on my friends MBP, it the screen dims in a similar way as to when you put your finger over the iSight camera, it fades to a dimmer screen.
My iMac has had a sudden decrease in wifi download speed. Upload speed hasn't changed and all othe connected devices still work as normal (the iPad still clocks in at around 30mbps and the iMac used too, now it's at 5.0 mbps). How do I fix the iMac? We have determined that it is not the internet provider and I have exahusted my ideas on how to get the speed back.

I bought Fusion and ran Windows 7 in a VM - within a few minutes my MBP (17" i7 4GB RAM) was wayyyyy hot (left side bottom/top). I mean, I am a little concerned with how hot it gets. I'll look into smcFancontrol but want to know if upgrading to 8GB RAM will do the trick as well?
command-option-apostrophe does not work in Apple Mail for me (Mail 7.3, OS 10.9.3). This is the keyboard shortcut used to decrease the quote level of a quoted line in a Mail message. In other words this is the keyboard shortcut for the menu item:Â
Format --> Quote Level --> DecreaseÂ
It hasn't worked for me since at least 10.8. Are others having this problem or do I need to dig more deeply through system extensions, looking for some kin of conflict?
I've noticed recently that my screen brightness will suddenly increase or decrease by itself. When I press one of the control buttons it indicates that it is 3 or 4 steps higher or lower (obviously allowing for the fact that pressing a control button moves you one step anyway!) I have the 1.8 SDD. I love the machine....but anyone have any ideas about this. It only happens under battery power.
I recently bought a Macbook Air and needed some tips to keep it's battery healthy. Now I know that the battery has limited cycles before it goes down to less than 80% charge capacity. But if I keep my adapted connected as much time as possible, to reduce the number of those cycle counts, will it harm it battery? What is best way to keep the battery running healthy for long time - charging it once a day or using it with adapted connected most of the times?

I have a pretty strange issue about sound in my macbook pro 13". I have NO sound at all. when i try to decrease, or increase the volume, the little window with the speaker shows a little forbid signe there. In the sound preferences its says, no output device. What can i do? I tried to install osx86 to my girlfriends laptop, and i downloaded multibeast. Accidently i installed it, to my macbook, and it messed up my whole system. When i rebooted it, it couldn't boot, and i had to restore my system. Everything looks like good to me, i even got back my personal files too, but the sound is not working. Multibeast installed VoodooHD kext, but i removed it already.
Any clue how to fix this? I've tried cleaning up the font cache but with no help / Irritating as hell too. I can read it. but man! it hurts. edit: notice how it only applies for some sites. Google being the most used of mine.
I need to uninstall calibri fonts and a couple others, I have searched for them, they are not in font book, how do I delete them! they are messed up, they type up wierd symbols instead of text and a application has converted all my notes into this symbol text!
I installed 300 fonts on my MBP and now all my web fonts are so messed up I can barely make out what some websites say. Is there a way to fix this or just dump the fonts and re-install them?
I have been having this problem for over two weeks on my iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, running 10.6.6. I am running FF 3.6.12 and Thunderbird 3.1. I mention Thunderbird, because the persistent request to install fonts occurs on both apps, not just FF. Clicking "Do not ask me again," has no effect.
The odd thing is the requests in both apps want to install on the volume "NEON," which is my SuperDuper (bootable) backup drive, and should contain all the fonts that are on my boot drive.
I have tried the tricks suggested for FontBook (move all User Fonts to the Computer Fonts ?), with no change in behavior. With some difficulty, I did install the fonts being asked for on both volumes, with the result that Firefox and Thunderbird began asking to install a new set of completely different fonts, although fewer in number that when the problem began.
So, like a complete idiot i downloaded a torrent file with a few thousand font files. i installed them all and it has bogged down my OS and taken over programs like Safari, firefox and entourage (which i use for email). when i change the font in the preference menu in the respective program it will change the size but not the actual font style. another strange thing is that safari will not load pictures now either.
i want to just wipe the hdd but i do not have a disc because i bought it used. i can take it back to the guy i got it from as he refurbishes macs but i was wondering if i could avoid the trip if any one has a tip or two for me.
