MacBook Air :: Screen Brightness Suddenly Increase Or Decrease / Happens Under Battery Power

Jul 8, 2008

I've noticed recently that my screen brightness will suddenly increase or decrease by itself. When I press one of the control buttons it indicates that it is 3 or 4 steps higher or lower (obviously allowing for the fact that pressing a control button moves you one step anyway!) I have the 1.8 SDD. I love the machine....but anyone have any ideas about this. It only happens under battery power.

OS X :: Gradually Increase/decrease Brightness With The Keyboard Keys?

Dec 11, 2009

I have a 15 inch aluminum macbook pro, Snow Leopard and recent updates all installed, but i noticed something on my friends 13 inch macbook pro that mine doesn't do.

On my friends, when you press the screen dim/bright button (F1, F2), its a gradual transistion, but on mine it just jumps down a notch.

For example, when you hold down the dim button on my friends MBP, it the screen dims in a similar way as to when you put your finger over the iSight camera, it fades to a dimmer screen.

MacBook Air :: Does Keeping Power Adapter Connected Decrease Battery Life

Jun 16, 2012

I recently bought a Macbook Air and needed some tips to keep it's battery healthy. Now I know that the battery has limited cycles before it goes down to less than 80% charge capacity. But if I keep my adapted connected as much time as possible, to reduce the number of those cycle counts, will it harm it battery? What is best way to keep the battery running healthy for long time - charging it once a day or using it with adapted connected most of the times?

MacBook :: Screen Changes Brightness Randomly / Screen Suddenly Become Little Dimmer

Jan 19, 2009

lately, my mba has been behaving a little weirdly. its screen would suddenly become a little dimmer when the brightness in the room has not changed a bit. after a long while(15 min?), it'll turn brighter again by itself, and again without any change in the lighting of the room. the change is not big but obviously. any idea? can it be some software? or setting? or a defective light sensor?

MacBook Pro :: Increase Brightness Beyond The Default Setting On It?

Jun 19, 2012

Just got the new MacBook Pro Retina, and I love it except for the fact that the overall brightness was decreased by 20-25%. A couple reviews talk about this noticeable reduction in brightness [URL], and I assume it has to do with the power consumption of the retina display. That said, I've always thought the highest brightness in previous generation MacBooks was barely bright enough as it was, and now with this reduction in default brightness, I'm finding it hard to use. I know I may be in the minority thinking this, but I may have to return the machine if I can't find a workaround. Is it possible to increase brightness beyond the default setting? Is there a command line setting that I can adjust? I'm well-aware of the battery trade-off this will have, but I don't care. I have to be able to see the screen.

MacBook Pro :: Unibody With "7 Hour" Battery - When Turn Wifi Off - Screen Down To 1/3 Brightness?

Feb 13, 2010

I am seriously considering purchasing one of the new unibody MBP's with the new "7 hour" battery. Just a couple quick questions for you all: Do you get 7 hours when you turn wifi off, the screen down to 1/3 brightness, don't use the CD drive/etc, or does it actually last 6-7 hours in normal use (surfing web, screen really bright, backlit keyboard on)? Has anyone experienced a degradation in battery life after a bunch of cycles? I notice apple claims that the new battery will last 5 years, yet they don't warranty it for more than a year. That does not sound good to me. Opinions?

MacBook Air :: Unable To Adjust Screen Brightness / Brightness Goes Up And Up

Nov 15, 2010

The brightness goes up when you plug in your MBA, but then over time it just goes up and up. I honestly like my brightness pretty low (rarely more than half, typically at 3-5 notches), but it just keeps on going up and up. I almost never set it above half, but multiple times a day, I notice that it looks pretty high and it's at like 3/4 so I put it it down to about 1/3, but after a while, it's just up again.

Anyone else notice this? What is it, why does it do this? How can I fix it? I don't mind not having auto-brightness (even though I loved it), as long as my screen doesn't keep going up.

MacBook Pro :: Can Battery Capacity Increase From What It Was?

Sep 22, 2010

I used an app on my MBP called Coconut battery. it said that my current battery capacity was 94% of what it was since I bought it. I assumed that means those 6% are never coming back and I should start using it more responsibly to make it last longer. I read a lot of forums on how to use your notebook effectively, when to plug it in, how much I should let it discharge etc. After 2 weeks of my new habits, I checked my battery life again and now it says 96%. Is it even possible for it to go back up?

MacBook Pro :: How Do Increase Battery Life

Apr 19, 2010

I have a question with regards to behavior that can either extend or diminish the overall life of a laptop battery. My friend recently purchased a new laptop (sony vaio) at a local Microcenter. The salesman was very insistent upon lecturing my friend as to the proper way to take care of a laptop. One of things he mentioned was to never move the computer while it is on, and to always close the lid before engaging in any sort of extensive moving (due to hard drive? processor? any verification on this?). Another thing that was very insistent upon was to always let the battery deplete from full to near empty on every charging cycle, and only charge the computer when replenishing it back to full. He claimed that this would dramatically increase the overall life of the battery.

My specific question relates to the MBP and this battery concept.

1) In general, can anyone verify this / does anyone believe that it would make a significant difference?

2) I remember watching one of those apple videos on the apple website where they were talking about their new battery technology, and they mentioned something about a chip that regulates the power distribution to the battery cells, thus preventing over charging, or something along those lines. Would this negate the advice given by the friendy salesman at Microcenter?

MacBook Pro :: 2010 MPB Battery Life Increase?

Jun 11, 2010

I got my i5 15 incher when they came out and like many people was disappointed by the battery life. It was decent though and I said hey, 6 hours is great! Recently though I've been getting 3 and my usage hasn't changed at all. I mostly use my computer for chrome (rarely flash), mail, and itunes.

I called Apple and the guy I spoke with wasn't the most knowledgeable person but he suggested that I reset the System Management Controller. I did that and now it looks like I'm getting 5-6 hours again! Hooray lol.

Anyway I had to register and tell you guys. I hope this helps people out.

OS X :: White Macbook Runs On AC Power (no Battery) But Not On Battery?

Apr 29, 2010

Just wondering if anyone has ever encountered this or if any experts out there know of the issue.I have a spare White Macbook (late 2008: Core 2 Duo 2.1GHz, 1GB, 120GB) that I'd like to set up for my brother to use to introduce him to the wonderful world of Macs. The problem it is having is that when I have a battery connected to it (I tried 2 different ones included a known-good one that is brand-new just purchased from Apple) it powers on and gives me the chime, but then immediately shuts off unexpectedly giving that little "whine" sound like if it just lost power all of a sudden. However, when i take out the battery, and just plug it into the Magsafe AC charger it works fine. Also when just trying to run on battery it does not turn on at all. Here's some cliffs:

1) Macbook with just battery does not turn on
2) Macbook with battery + Magsafe AC charger connects powers on, gives the chime, but then immediately shuts off making the "whine" sound as if the power was suddenly cut off
3) Macbook with no battery connected and just the Magsafe AC charger connected works fine.Do you guys think this is either:

A) battery connector issue (the little piece with the metal wires that the battery connects to. ~$50 part)
B) Logic Board issue

I already tried resetting the PRAM and SMU to no avail.

MacBook Pro :: Battery Running On Reserve Battery Power

Jun 18, 2010

I just turned on my 13" MBP and got this message. Apparently, this is supposed to come up when there is only like 5% charge left. My battery indicator at the top of the screen said there was 22% charge left. Also, according to IStat, my battery's health has already dropped down to 97% after only about 2 weeks and 5 cycles. Is this normal? I'm going to try recallibrating my battery by fully charging it and then letting it fully drain. Is there a good chance that this solves this problem?
