Sep 16, 2010I have a 15" MBP 3,1 (Sept 2007) Intel C2D 2.4GHz, 4MB Cache, Santa Rosa, 4GB Ram, 500GB Storage @5400RPM, GeForce 8600M GT 256MB VRAM) I am a student (returning to school) and so I qualify for the Adobe discount for the Creative suite. I already have CS3 (Master Collection) and am considering buying CS5 (Design Premium). I was wondering if I should notice any performance decrease/increase and any general thoughts if it's worth it or not.

Software :: Text Edit / Writing For Certain Space - Word Count
Nov 20, 2001I'm trying to help out a co-worker who writes the company newsletter, articles for our base and local newspaper, as well as employee profiles and articles for various projects we produce at my job. This lady comes from a newspaper background and she's looking for a Mac-based program that somehow calculates word count and lets you write for a certain space/word count. Trust me, she's not visually-oriented (or particularly font/layout savvy) in any way, so the easier and more straight-forward something is, the better. I don't know if a program like this exists (and affordable one, at that), but to be honest, she always overwrites and guess who's the guy who has to sit with her and back and forth edit and trial and error stuff?
Also, Mac OS X-native would be very cool, as Sandy is on an iMac and being that she's not stuck waiting on Photoshop and stuff, she's been using OS X for the past month or so and now that our order of Office v.X copies are on the way, she will be one of those lucky people who will probably never have to launch Classic to get her job done: Word and Entourage are the only things she really uses. Anyone know of a program like I've described above? Are any of you from a newspaper/magazine background or environment with some suggestions or advice?

I am a student so I use Microsoft word a lot and when I use it I use it as Notebook layout.
When I first used it I had no problem at all. But then I don't know what happened but all of sudden the letters I type in would be on top of a line instead of writing between lines like as writing on a notebook.
I opened my previous notebook layout documents and compared it to the new one but couldn't find what was different.

Mar 19, 2009I just got a replacement Ati radeon 3870 because the first cards fans didn't run at all for a minute or so and would then spin up full for 30 seconds or so and so forth, regardless of what i was doing.
My replacement card came today but this cards fan runs full all of the time?
Surely this is a driver or fan control issue or something, my previous nvidia 8800GT was silent all of the time, but alas I could not play Call of Duty 2 with that card hence the switch.
Is there anything i can do to help cool the card besides fitting aftermarket fans which i don't feel confident doing and they don't seem to support the 3870 100%.
Maybe open up the PCI slots or upping the Mac Pros fans via SMC Fan Control?
Or do i return it and switch back to a 8800gt and forfit Call Of Duty 2 or wait and switch it for a 4870?
I'm going to try and live with the fan noise tonight but does anyone own a quiet 3870?
For the record I'm running a 2008 2.8GHZ 4-Core Mac Pro with 8Gb of Ram and 10.5.6. I tried a clean install on a new hard drive and the card behaved the same.

Applications :: No Disk Space After Failed Disk Utility Erase Free Space?
Dec 15, 2010I'm having a pretty serious problem. I attempted to erase the free space on my HD, as I do from time to time, except this time it appeared to hang/freeze at the end, when it gets to the part where it creates a temporary file. I waited for several minutes and it didn't move. I tried clicking the skip button, but that did nothing either, so I force quit Disk Utility.
The problem is, it left the disk at "Zero KB" of free space, effectively making my computer inoperable. I was in the process of studying for a huge exam tomorrow, and am currently flipping out.
If it matters, I'm on a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.
I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS and import the old files, but my real fear is that I will have to do a fresh install of the OS.

Sounds like a Jumbo jet taking off. Most of the noise sees to be more from the wooshing of the air through the vents rather than the fan.
I've vacuumed all the dust out of it (I bought it used).
Any ideas that don't require major surgery. I'm wondering if putting a new fan in would help? How much are new fans?

Dec 11, 2009I have a 15 inch aluminum macbook pro, Snow Leopard and recent updates all installed, but i noticed something on my friends 13 inch macbook pro that mine doesn't do.
On my friends, when you press the screen dim/bright button (F1, F2), its a gradual transistion, but on mine it just jumps down a notch.
For example, when you hold down the dim button on my friends MBP, it the screen dims in a similar way as to when you put your finger over the iSight camera, it fades to a dimmer screen.

Jul 8, 2008I've noticed recently that my screen brightness will suddenly increase or decrease by itself. When I press one of the control buttons it indicates that it is 3 or 4 steps higher or lower (obviously allowing for the fact that pressing a control button moves you one step anyway!) I have the 1.8 SDD. I love the machine....but anyone have any ideas about this. It only happens under battery power.

May 17, 2012I have a pretty strange issue about sound in my macbook pro 13". I have NO sound at all. when i try to decrease, or increase the volume, the little window with the speaker shows a little forbid signe there. In the sound preferences its says, no output device. What can i do? I tried to install osx86 to my girlfriends laptop, and i downloaded multibeast. Accidently i installed it, to my macbook, and it messed up my whole system. When i rebooted it, it couldn't boot, and i had to restore my system. Everything looks like good to me, i even got back my personal files too, but the sound is not working. Multibeast installed VoodooHD kext, but i removed it already.

Applications :: Word Docs Saved As Aliased To Applications Folder?
Aug 17, 2010My dad was saving a bunch of Word docs on his Mac - he had one large file that he split up into twenty-some smaller files, which he then saved onto both his desktop and on a flash drive. Somehow along the way (neither he nor I had any clue how) but 4 of those files saved as an alias that point to nowhere. In other words, I can't find the originals anywhere on his computer or flash drives.
Even stranger is that one of those files aliased to the Applications folder. Keep in mind these are all supposed to be word documents. They all still end with .doc, but their type is an alias. I have no clue how they were created as an alias, but they were. It's probably a longshot without knowing where the original is located, but do any of you guys know how to possibly retrieve this?
