When I plug a set of headphones on my macbook pro, it no longer recognizes that headphones are plugged in. I have tried three different sets of headphones just to make sure that they are not the problem. In Sound/Output section of system preferences, it still says internal speakers even when the headphones are plugged in all the way.
Is there a fix for this I can do myself or do I need to take it in to an Apple Store?
I bought my unibody MBP back in late July from the Apple store here. It's been a great machine. Except all of a sudden my headphone jack won't play sound. I realized this last night as I tried to listen to music on it while surfing the web. I've plugged headphones into it maybe 10 times total. And they worked every time before. If I unplug the headphones and plug them back in repeatedly I can get them to work after about the 4th or 5th time. When they do work, the sound is great. Anyway, I made an appointment with the genius bar this afternoon to show them and see if there is anything they can do. Obviously, after paying $2,500 for a laptop I would expect it to run completely flawlessly. But at the same time, I'm hoping they don't offer to replace it with a refurbished one. In fact, I would prefer to not even get a new one. I love this one, I guess I just hope it's fixable.
View 12 Replies View RelatedSound is working fine on my MBA - but when i plug anything into the headphone jack i hear a millisecond of sound then nothing, as soon as i take it out again, it is still playing fine through built in speakers. I think it started happening after i downloaded and installed the latest update but i'm not 100% sure. Tested headphones, stereo etc. and nothing, working. (stereo & headphones work fine through iphone etc. so it's not the cable or the jack) It also does seem like it takes longer for the MBA to recognise something is plugged in? could be a software bug on the new update?

My headphone jack was working just fine until this morning when I opened my computer. It's plugged in, but the sound keeps going through the head speakers. I have done the system preference check to make sure it is not muted.

The right side is barely audible all the time. If I unplug them, and re-plug them, the same exact thing happens. Everything looks good in the sound properties page. I know the headphones work because I tried them in another device.

I hooked my Macbook mini-display port up to my new Sony 32" TV and it worked fine for a month or so, but then it stopped working. Now when I plug it in the TV says there is "no signal" and the laptop doesn't detect the display. Nothing happens when I plug it in. I have tried two different HDMI chords, but only one mini display chord.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe Firewire port on my MacBook has stopped working. Nothing responds and when you look in System Profiler with anything connected the Firewire section shows the spinning indicator for a few minutes before claiming it is unable to list devices. I have also tried all the usual troubleshooting steps including resetting the SMC. But, if I put my thumb under the connected Firewire plug and gently press upwards the port works. It shows in System Profiler and drives mount. I have, of course, tried with different cables to rule that out too.
It clearly seems to be a physical problem with the port somehow. Does anyone have any ideas of exactly what the problem might be, and how easy it is to fix? Maybe a pin just needs bending outwards, or the port loose and can a clip needs pushing back in. If it is likely to be something relatively simple I am comfortable with fixing it myself, but the laptop is a few years old and not covered by AppleCare so I am wearing of an expensive repair bill.
I often watch movies streaming on the internet by connecting my Macbook to my television via my Mini DVI to S-video adaptor cable. Last week, however, it suddenly stopped working. The television can still detect the display, but the image is super distorted and moving in a static-ey way. I can only vaguely make out the icons on my desktop on the TV screen. I thought that perhaps my adaptor cable was at fault, so I bought a new one - but the problem remains. I have also tried resetting the PRAM, repairing the disc and permissions with Disc Utility, and cleaning the Mini DVI port. I am pretty certain that it is a hardware problem with the port itself.  One of the pins on my Mini DVI port looks like it could be out of place. It is kind of squished at the bottom of the port instead of laying flat like the others. I’m thinking that this might be the culprit. Is there a way to repair the port without having to replace the whole logic board? The Macbook in question is a 2008 Core 2 Duo running Lion.Â

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have had my 24" 2.8GHz iMac from November 2007 flawless until today, 1 of 3 usb ports on the back simply decided to stop working. my keyboard, when plugged in, does not work, however, I usually use this one port with my iPod, when I plug my iPod in, it turns on, says its connected, then ejects automatically, though in the other ports...it works fine in the other ports.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been having an annoying problem lately. The ethernet port on my Mac Mini seems to have stopped working. It happened when I was switching routers. Most likely I just unplugged it from the old router, and into the new one. After that, no more connection, nothing changes when I plug something in.
As far as troubleshooting goes, I've plugged it into other ports, and into my MacBook Air (Just to get a Self assigned IP) and nothing works. I know these ports work with my other computers. I've reset the SMC and PRAM.It works in bootcamp so this makes me think it's not hardware. Any other suggestions?
I have used ssh port forwarding in the past,I have recently upgraded to Mavericks, but it does appear that my ssh port forwarding stopped some time before this. The last time I know it worked was 5/14/14, and feel it has worked more recently as well.Â
from my Mac I ssh to my work jump server (port 22, let's say its IP is 11.22.33.44), and my jump server has access to work PC (lets say IP of 10.1.2.3). My work PC has RDP running on it on the common port 3389. I have verified that I can set up a working RDP session at work from another box. Also, I know that my jump server can get to my PC at work as I can ping my work IP if I just ssh straight to my jump server. And I know that there is no firewall stopping me from the jump server as I can also open a telnet session to my work PC on port 3389, without errors.Â

I started to have a perplexing problem that I narrowed down to the audio in-put port on my Mac Pro (MacPro3 ,1). It was working fine then the sound level increased and the quality became distorted (like a "fuzz base" but affecting all sounds)I was in the process of digitizing records, and believed the record played broke. So I got a new record player (audio-technica AT-LP120-USB). The same thing occurred with the audio in-put port, so I switched to the USB port and the audio was fine. I also checked with music already on my HD and it played fine. Consequently it has to be the in-put line port and/or a software issue.

I have a 15" unibody MBP bought in Nov '08.
Had been using the Mini Displayport > DVI adapter just fine with both HDTV and Dell monitor, BUT then all output has stopped completely!
No monitor is detected by the laptop (although the display does blink blue, as if it had detected it), tried different cables, different displays, using the Displayport firmware update, speaking to Apple, deleting the com.apple..plist files, etc
Edit: it also doesn't work in XP on Bootcamp
I went to plug my headphones into my Macbook and I noticed that the tip of the plug was glowing red, when I turned to look at the side of the computer I nonticed that there was a red light being emitted from the headphone port and the sound icon on the menu bar was grayed out. Is there actually a light in there? What does it mean? I'm uploading pictures right now, they'll be up in a few minutes. My MacBook is a late-2007 White MacBook running 10.6.1.

Since doing a clean install of Mavericks (which solved a ReportCrash loop problem), everything has been fine except..for some reason the 3.5mm headphone port refuses to acknowledge the existence of headphones when plugged in. The internal speakers do not cut out. No sound comes through the headphones. If I go into Systems Preferences/Sound/Output there is no option for headphones sound, just internal speakers.Â
I have tried everything (deleting .plist files and rebooting, booting in safe mode, PRAM resets etc etc). I have also tried various sets of headphones (mono, stereo and three ring headphone plugs). They all don't work on my MacBook Pro, they all do work (and make the internal speakers cut out) on my MacBook Air. It's not the headphones.Â
The port will happily recognize, charge and download my iPod nano. I am convinced this is an OS problem, as the port has not suffered any shocks, and it happened directly after a clean Mavericks install. It was working fine on Mavericks before the clean install.Â

I installed 10.5.7 yesterday. Immediately after the installation was complete, my Apple bluetooth keyboard stopped working. Went into Bluetooth system settings, and it said that there was no bluetooth hardware found... (it's built into the machine!!)...
Also, every time I start iTunes, it gives some weird error about Adobe Flash player. I'm not at home now so I don't have the exact wording of the error with me, sorry...
I've had my macbook connected to my speakers for much of the last couple of days. I reckon I last had sound from my actual macbook speak the day before yesterday - No nothing! The speaker icon in the menu bar is greyed out and in system prefs, all is normal and not muted. When I use the volume keys, the window comes up but the volume indicators don't move up or down and there is the forbidden/ no entry icon underneath the volume indicator bar. There is also a new red light omitting from the headphone port. (I'm using Lion 10.7.3)

So I just received a used macbook that has something stuck in the headphone port. What this means is that os x wants to use the optical out (digital) and once it does that there is no way to use the internal speakers. And, because it is stuck, I can't use headphones either. Temporarily, I am trying to use an old USB external Creative sound card for my audio, but when I plug it in all it does is recognize it. I tried plugging into every port but nothing.

Ok well some people thought it was starting to look too generic, which I can agree with. I've tried a new approach, slightly. Some problems with the port placements have stopped me for the moment, but I'll tackle this sometime soon and see if I can work them out.

This is my concept of what an apple tablet might look like. This was just for fun. What do you guys think, agree with, disagree with.
Personally I feel that it will run full OS X and therefore I have put the necessary ports. I have also included a volume rocker and a dock connector. Lets see some other depictions from the creatives out there?

I plug my laptop into external speakers for better sound. Now for some reason they are not working. Its not the speakers because I tried some headphones also and got no sound as well. I just downloaded itunes 10, but the speakers were working fine yesterday so I don't think that is it.

When I adjust the audio setting (apple icon--> System Preferences --> Sound --> select "Input" tab --> highlight " Line in; Audio line-in port") I can only hear sounds through the headphone but the mic portion does not pic up. If I hit the mic portion I see the bars move, that would indicate some sound being picked up. However, when I try to use the mic, through Mac Office Powerpoint 2010, the sound (if received through the mic) does not pick up.Â
Why is this happening? Do I need some extra external component for the microphone part of the headset to work or do something extra in the System Preference area?
