OS X :: Something Stuck In Headphone Port - Internal Speakers Disabled
Feb 13, 2009
So I just received a used macbook that has something stuck in the headphone port. What this means is that os x wants to use the optical out (digital) and once it does that there is no way to use the internal speakers. And, because it is stuck, I can't use headphones either. Temporarily, I am trying to use an old USB external Creative sound card for my audio, but when I plug it in all it does is recognize it. I tried plugging into every port but nothing.

My 15" late 2006 MBP has just stopped producing sound from the internal speakers and for the first time there is a red light visible inside the headpbone output port. Apple support says contact support but since I'm a long time out of even my extended warranty.

Is it possible by any means to use the headphone output and the built in speakers together. The reason I ask is I have a wireless speaker which transmits from the headphone jack. When this is plugged in it sends everything playing on my MBP to the speaker. This is great but I would also like the music to play from my laptop speakers at the same time.

I have plugged a toslink cable between my 5.1 amplifier and my iMac, but I would like to be able to find a software that would let me switch between digital out and the internal iMac speakers (which are quite good actually!)
I know it is a Mac OS driver limitation since Windows 7 (via Bootcamp) let me choose the output. In Mac OS once I plugg something, "Internal speakers" output option disappear from sound preferences, audio midi setup, HalLAB, .... This causes unnecessary wear and tear on the audio port from constantly inserting and removing the cable to switch from built in speakers to external audio system.

I have my stereo plugged into the headphone jack but would like the sound to also come from the internal speakers when the stereo is off without unplugging the jack in back.I tried going to the sound control panel but it only lists the headphone jack. Is there a way to do this?

I feel like I once had a PrefPane for this problem but just am having a hard time searching for it. Currently I have my heaphones jack Line-In routed to my AV Receiver for iTunes music in my room, but whenever I am YouTubing or other stuff while listening to music the System Sounds come out of my Loudspeakers too. I am interested in routing only the iTunes audio through the headphone jack, and everything else to run through my iMac's internal speakers (2007 iMac AL).I saw the SoundFlower thing out there but didn't think that was the ticket

A few days ago I began hearing some strange high frequency noises coming from my internal speakers, and even higher noises when headphones or my external speakers were plugged in. A day later, the noise was only coming from the internal speakers and the headphone jack no longer works. I have the speakers plugged in and the sound still comes from the internal speakers with intermittent high frequency noises and whistling. I'm trying to get back my speakers or headphones in working order.

The sound output in my Macbook Pro has been going in and out now for a number of months. And yesterday it finally got stuck on "Digital Output" meaning when I take out headphones from the jack, the internal speakers do not work. I am planning on taking it in and wanted to know, since I am still under warranty will Apple repair it, or give me a new one?

Situation: no sound out from speakers in admin and user account and newly created account. Headphones work, startup chimes work on speakers.
Go to Sound in Preferences and only shows Digital Out for output. Should show Internal Speakers. Ran Diskwarrior and Applejack and zapped pram. Took mac apart and confirmed speakers wired correctly which is verified by the start up chimes being audible on the internal speakers. tested all accounts and created new account all with the same results. Did search of Google and MacRumor. Found one unaswered post indicating same problem. Had same problem with another macbook pro, ran same steps, take apart, confirm wiring setup, Diskwarriored, applejacked and zapped pram and it fixed the problem. I'm not sure what else to try. Did check Audio Midi Setup util and it also did not see the internal speakers.

am trying to make these old old speakers (they are called Sonic Dynamic Stereo System, the only thing written on the whole damn speaker) so that they fit into my computer/iPod/anything with a headphone jack. I read that this could be done online, but here's my problem. The headphones i'm working with have three wires: red painted, green painted and unpainted copper wires. Each of the two speakers has two thicker ones. On the rubber part of one it says "CSA TYPE TI AWM 90degC FTI 26AWG LL47528". On the other there is a white stripe.

The audio on my macbook suddenly stopped working. When I click on the audio adjuster, it won't even let me change the level (the little circle is white now, not blue).
But when I plug in headphones or an external speaker, everything works fine. I can once again adjust the audio and get sound
There was a red light eminating from the audio out jack for a while (last couple of days) but today, there is no longer a red light. Still no audio from the speakers.

I have a Macbook Pro 13" unibody I purchased in June 2009. Just recently, the headphone jack stopped working. I tested many different headphones and speakers, and none of them work. I am suspecting a hardware issue, because when I plug it in, i head the static while it is being plugged in. However it does not switch the audio. The only thing is, if it was a hardware problem, wouldn't it be stuck in the headphone mode because the switcher is stuck?

I went to plug my headphones into my Macbook and I noticed that the tip of the plug was glowing red, when I turned to look at the side of the computer I nonticed that there was a red light being emitted from the headphone port and the sound icon on the menu bar was grayed out. Is there actually a light in there? What does it mean? I'm uploading pictures right now, they'll be up in a few minutes. My MacBook is a late-2007 White MacBook running 10.6.1.

I want to connect speakers and a headphone to my Imac at the same time.Since there is only one audio output in the imac, I need a audio splitter and I think I need a headphone splitter then? Now the problem is there is no volume control on my headphone and I want it at a different volume then my speakers, otherwise when I turn my speakers on and the headphones are still connected and I turn volume up loud it will ruin my headphone ( and I don't want my software volume almost down and my speaker control way up)Now I found this headphone splitter, but my question is, will the sound quality still be the same because I need the same sound quality.
I know it's a difficult story,

My built in speakers work fine all the time, even when I have headphones plugged in. I looked under the output devices in the system settings and the only option is for built in audio output, a.k.a speakers, there is no option for an alternate audio output, a.k.a headphones. When I plug in my headphones nothing happens, sound continues out of the internal speakers like nothing happened.I have Mac OS X version 10.4.11.. iMac7,1.. 2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 1b 667 mgz DDR2 SDRAM

When I plug a set of headphones on my macbook pro, it no longer recognizes that headphones are plugged in. I have tried three different sets of headphones just to make sure that they are not the problem. In Sound/Output section of system preferences, it still says internal speakers even when the headphones are plugged in all the way.
Is there a fix for this I can do myself or do I need to take it in to an Apple Store?

I have a dried skittle stuck in my headphone jack, and can not get it out for anything. My MacBook Pro thinks that there is a headphone in the jack, but there isn't so it doesn't play any sound from my speakers. I was looking to disable digital out but don't know how.
