MacBook :: Speaker Icon Grayed Out - Red Light Omitting From Headphone Port
Apr 4, 2012
I've had my macbook connected to my speakers for much of the last couple of days. I reckon I last had sound from my actual macbook speak the day before yesterday - No nothing! The speaker icon in the menu bar is greyed out and in system prefs, all is normal and not muted. When I use the volume keys, the window comes up but the volume indicators don't move up or down and there is the forbidden/ no entry icon underneath the volume indicator bar. There is also a new red light omitting from the headphone port. (I'm using Lion 10.7.3)

I went to plug my headphones into my Macbook and I noticed that the tip of the plug was glowing red, when I turned to look at the side of the computer I nonticed that there was a red light being emitted from the headphone port and the sound icon on the menu bar was grayed out. Is there actually a light in there? What does it mean? I'm uploading pictures right now, they'll be up in a few minutes. My MacBook is a late-2007 White MacBook running 10.6.1.

My 15" late 2006 MBP has just stopped producing sound from the internal speakers and for the first time there is a red light visible inside the headpbone output port. Apple support says contact support but since I'm a long time out of even my extended warranty.

I have a stereo hooked up to my iMac and everything sounds great. What I'm wondering is this. Is there a way to have sound come out of BOTH the internal speakers and the headphone/audio out jack?

I was just listening to some music through some speakers on my old 1.8ghz cd macbook and then I unplugged the cable from the headphone jack and noticed that there was a red glowing light coming from the headphone jack. Now my sound is messed up, sound works properly only when something is plugged into the headphone jack. Nothing will play through the internal speakers when I try to adjust the volume with nothing plugged in I get this.

Last weekend, after I took my headphones out of the computer, I couldn't get any sound from the mac, and the volume controls on the keyboard didn't work. 5 minutes later I noticed a red light coming out of the headphone jack. I looked around for answers and apparently all you need to do is stick in a matchstick or Q-tip and wiggle it around to fix the sensor. It worked the first time. I could get sound from the mac and the next couple of times after unplugging the headphones, everything was normal. The problem has come up again, and I'm looking for a permanent fix. Am I looking at a trip to the Apple Store to get it fixed, or is there something I can do?

What's up with the red light coming from my headphone jack. It only turns on when I am in Windows XP via Bootcamp. It doesn't turn on while using OSX.

How do you get sound output from BOTH a USB speaker and the headphone jack at the same time? I am trying to drive a headphone speaker driven wireless speaker on my deck while still have audio on my imac.

The sound doesn't work! I turned on my laptop and there is no sound. When I press the up and down volume buttons, it's normal, but there is no noise. Also, there ISN'T a red light in my headphone jack.

When I plug a set of headphones on my macbook pro, it no longer recognizes that headphones are plugged in. I have tried three different sets of headphones just to make sure that they are not the problem. In Sound/Output section of system preferences, it still says internal speakers even when the headphones are plugged in all the way.
Is there a fix for this I can do myself or do I need to take it in to an Apple Store?

I was listening to my itunes through headphones today, and right after I took the headphones out, my volume icon and slider are grayed out and unresponsive, and my volume buttons bring up the volume square-thing with a white "no" circle under the volume level. I've restarted my computer multiple times, blown out the headphone input with compressed air, verified my disk through disk utility and it said everything is fine, yet the problem persists.

Since doing a clean install of Mavericks (which solved a ReportCrash loop problem), everything has been fine except..for some reason the 3.5mm headphone port refuses to acknowledge the existence of headphones when plugged in. The internal speakers do not cut out. No sound comes through the headphones. If I go into Systems Preferences/Sound/Output there is no option for headphones sound, just internal speakers.Â
I have tried everything (deleting .plist files and rebooting, booting in safe mode, PRAM resets etc etc). I have also tried various sets of headphones (mono, stereo and three ring headphone plugs). They all don't work on my MacBook Pro, they all do work (and make the internal speakers cut out) on my MacBook Air. It's not the headphones.Â
The port will happily recognize, charge and download my iPod nano. I am convinced this is an OS problem, as the port has not suffered any shocks, and it happened directly after a clean Mavericks install. It was working fine on Mavericks before the clean install.Â

I have a Bose speaker system connected to my Audio Out port of my mid-'10 Macbook Pro but I can no longer control the volume: System Preferences has the sound controls set to the maximum but the sound output is weak and the microphone icon at the top of the display is grayed out (but shows it at maximum when I click on it). Apparently, then, the sound is only coming out of the laptop. How do I get it to go out of the audio out port through my Bose Companion 2 and be adjustable?

Macbook Pro 13' (late 2011, I think) and its operating system. I am having problem with the speakers. I had no trouble with it when I bought in December 2011, even when I updated the OS 10.7.4. But when I upgraded its RAM from 4gig to 8, that was when trouble started. Everytime I boot, the speaker icon is visible at the start, but when the wifi and battery icons appear, the speaker icon greys out. No sound come out from the speakers. When I checked the speaker section in the System Preference, the buttons are also greyed out.

My MBP 15" Duo 2.33 A1211 received light spillage. The apparent damage was limited to loss of the keyboard backlight on 3/4 of the panel and, of greater concern, effective loss of the right speaker. Audio does pass, though far too faint and distorted to be useful. The left speaker/channel functions as per normal. Last night I successfully replaced the combined speaker assembly yet the same symptoms remain with no change. My knowledge of the guts of my machine is slight though growing. Where should I go next up the signal chain to trouble shoot? Is there a dedicated audio amp onboard between the logic board & the speakers? Outside of my stated problem, all other hardware/processes have functioned without issue since the accident.

1. The optical light is always "ON" on the headphone hole only on Win 7 but not Leopard. How do you get rid of that?2. Keyboard light would not turn off at the lowest setting. Sound is not as loud as well. I downloaded the latest Realtek audio driver and it's still the same.3. 9600m GT is always on. I would like to use 9400m instead since it saves battery.

I have a pare of powered KRK Rokit speakers which I connect to my iMac via the headphone port. Never had a problem with this connection, but today the port doesn't seem to be working.Â
In normal circumstances, as soon as I plug the speaker cable in the port, the internal speaker of the Mac would disabled itself (even if the KRKs are not powered). However, now I plug the cable it and the internal Mac speaker keeps running. It seems as if the port does not recognise that there is an external source connected. Â

My built in speakers work fine all the time, even when I have headphones plugged in. I looked under the output devices in the system settings and the only option is for built in audio output, a.k.a speakers, there is no option for an alternate audio output, a.k.a headphones. When I plug in my headphones nothing happens, sound continues out of the internal speakers like nothing happened.I have Mac OS X version 10.4.11.. iMac7,1.. 2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 1b 667 mgz DDR2 SDRAM

So I just received a used macbook that has something stuck in the headphone port. What this means is that os x wants to use the optical out (digital) and once it does that there is no way to use the internal speakers. And, because it is stuck, I can't use headphones either. Temporarily, I am trying to use an old USB external Creative sound card for my audio, but when I plug it in all it does is recognize it. I tried plugging into every port but nothing.

I can find the "new folder" icon, but it is grayed out in the finder window. I am trying to add a new folder under the "administrator" log in on my Mac Mini and it won't let me and it won't let me under any user name. I am trying to add a new folder under the "Public" folder. I have search high and low on the internet and have not been able to find an answer. How do I turn on the ability to add a new folder?Â
I have tried "read & write" under sharing and also under "get info", neither of these gave me the ability to add a new folder.Â
I am sure it is a really simple answer as I can do it on my MacBook Pro, but can't on the Mac Mini. Â

Is it possible to have the Mac Pro output signals from the optical and the headphone port on the front of the case? I like to have my speakers going as well as have one cup on my ear when listening. Surely there must be an application out there that forces OSX to do this.

In the above picture, you can see that the time machine menu bar icon is "grey" instead of "black".Â
It seems that backups occur as normal (when I click on the icon, and choose "Backup now", it seems to backup).
When I click "Enter Time machine", everything seems to work as normal. I can see the latest backup that I made by clicking on "Backup now".Â
- I have two external hard drives that I use for time machine backups.
- I use OSX 10.9.3
- Macbook Pro 6,2 Inter Core i7 2.8Ghz, 8GB Ram, 500GB HDD,Â
I have tried:
- Disconnecting both the external hard drives and reconnecting.
- Restarting my Mac.Â
Why is the icon grey
