I cannot see my external hard drive. I cannot see it in finder. When I started disk utility it says I need to repair but than it says it cannot be repaired. Is there a way I can reach the data? I don't know what happened to the disk.

I have a Late 09 15" MBP and a WD 1TB external HD. I've never had a problem until now. I start up the hard drive, then it loads up fine and the Mac recognizes it just fine. As soon as I try to copy something - doesn't matter how big it is - I get an error and at the end it says "(Error code - 36)". It just says the file cannot be read or written. Weird thing is I can access everything on the hard drive. Anyone have any tips before I try reformatting the HD?

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe last couple of times I have woken my MBP up a box has popped up with a big red sign in the middle saying my external hard drive was removed unexpectedly and could have caused loss of data. I know this is not healthy and I would like to stop it doing this as soon as possible. It is connected via firewire 800 and is a western digital 250 gig my book pro if that makes any difference. I close the lid of my laptop with it still on and connected and everything is supposed to sleep. It used to work fine, I would open the lid and everything would wake up and I could do what I was doing before with no error messages and the hard drive would still be mounted on the desktop.

I have this .mkv file that keeps giving me an error when I try to transfer it to my external. I get "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code 0)".
I have transferred plenty of .mkv files to my external with no problems. All other files work fine when I transfer them. It will let me move my .mkv file around my Macbook Pro's internal hard drive but it won't let me transfer it to the external.
I have an external 2TB Western Digital Caviar drive hooked up to my 2006 iMac through a docking bay and USB 2.0. I'm running 10.6.6 and the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended. It's my media and backup drive and I'm always copying stuff to and from it. All was well and good with the setup and I had no problems for probably 5 or 6 months. Just around Christmas, though, I started getting alerts when trying to copy files over to the drive. Error Code: -50.
Basically, I can still view/read files on the drive and play songs in iTunes, but if I try to rip a CD, iTunes hangs and dies. If I try to copy any file over using the Finder or empty the trash with files from that drive, I get the -50 code and alert. A restart will fix the problem for a little while but then it's back after maybe 30 minutes or so that's obviously not a good long-term solution. This page claims it is an "Error in user parameter list" but I have no idea what that means. I've done a bunch of Googling, but people are saying it's anything from problems with networked NTFS drives (which it's not for me) or that it's a disk permissions issue (no bootable system on the drive).
I am trying to copy my aperture 3 library (126GB) to an external hard drive to free up space on my local hard drive.
When it is at the final 1gb of the process I recieve an error message:
"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Aperture 3 Library” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)"
I have repaired the aperture library and repaired permissions and this did not work.

Ok so I have an 8800 GS imac, 3.06 intel core 2, 4 gigs ram. Running snow lepord. I need to resolve an issue where I can not get into OSX. At first I got error messeges saying my external HDD could not read, now it looks like its my primary drive because when I restarted I got the progress bar under the apple logo, indicating that something is wrong with the OS. The bar when to full 100% but then I got stuck at never ending spinning wheel. I restarted and no more progress bar but still the spining wheel of death. I really dont mind refomrating its just that I had some important text documents and other files that I cant get back without recoving them some how. How to proceed? I held down cmd v or s (i forgot) on startup and got a black screen with several problem statements. One reads the system boot strapper has crashed trace BPT trap.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI received an Acomdata 2Tb external hard drive today from Amazon and plugged it in. Time Machine popped up and I declined to link the hard drive to it. I went into Disk Utility and chose the new hard drive on the left column and went to erase. I chose Mac OS Extended. I named it and hit erase. It started going, and going..... and going... and a half an hour later I knew something was wrong.
Disk Utility was not responding and I eventually had to Force Quit. Now I cannot format the hard drive. I starts and then it stops with a disk error. I tried to run the First Aid verify and repair and both stopped after a few seconds with an error. What do I do?

My old iMac G4 (running OS 10.4) has been running sluggishly with sporadic freezes & "spinning pizzas" for several months. I launched Disk Utility which displayed the following message "SMART: failing". I attempted to restart the iMac but it would freeze immediately after the "gong". I was, however, able to restart from the install CD. I attempted to run Repair Permissions which froze. I ran Repair Disk which reported that "volume cannot be repaired because of an error". I restarted from the Disk Warrior CD. The hardware test indicated that "the built-in SMART indicated everything is normal".Is this all indicative of an internal drive that is behaving unpredictably & about to die?
View 7 Replies View RelatedSince a week or 3 my Imac is bleeping whenever the harddisk is put to work. Before this it was impossible to make a time machine copy, it would hang at a certain point. I recently did a disk utility scan which could not be finished (aborted by the system) as it was saying (translated from Dutch):
"Volume-information being checked Wrong amount of free blocks on this volume (Has to be 38684126 in stead of 38684119)The volume 'Macintosh HD' is damaged and need to be repaired.Error: this disk needs to be repaired. Restart system with another disk (like Mac OS X-installdisk) and use disk utility to repair this disk."
So I put the installdisk 1 in, but the Imac spits it out, refuses to start up in harddisk repair mode or any other mode at all. It just spits it out and starts as usual. Install disk 2 it doesnt spit out, but I can only open a read me file. Like said, the Imac works fine, except that it is guided by literaly hundreds of beeps in high and low, short and long. I feel like being at a supermarket having my items scanned. That is what it sounds like. It is quite vocal but annoying and seem to multiply every day. In the beginning it only did at start up just a few beeps, then it got more, and now it beeps also in sleep mode.
I cannot do a disk repair, also not with the latest OS X update (snowleopard, since Lion is not working on my 1GB drive). I do notice though that the difference in this error code is getting bigger, it used to be just one block difference, now it is 7.
Also I took the memory modules out yesterday and put them back in, as I heard this can also help get rid of the beeps. It did not solve anything at all.I can't find anything on this problem on internet, because all beep related topics are about the error codes for the RAM drives. These are not the same sounds. Another attempt was to install the cms program to avoid overheating fans. Also no improvement.

Recently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive).After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo my mac's hard drive went out. So I bought a new one that is 160GB. I'm trying to partition it in Disk Utility, but there are a couple of problems I've run into. First, It's saying there is 1.2TB of space. I guess it's possible Western Digital put a wrong label on their drive, but that seems a bit unlikely, doesn't it? The second issue is that when I go to actually partition it, I get an error that says, "Partition failed with the error: input/output error". I have no idea what's going on, or what I should do
I'm using a Macbook w/ 10.4.11 (although strangely, that disk that came with my computer says 10.4.9, not sure how much of a difference that will make...). It is a 2.16GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, w/ 1GB of ram, if it helps.

Started G5, got a question mark. Rebooted from disk. Tried to repair. Told me it could not exit and complete repair to HD. Restarted again. This time everything in utility window red. Message is Fatal Hardware error to disk utility. Back-up if not completely failed and replace with new drive.
Not great at behind the scenes with my mac. Does this mean a shop visit. Any estimate on cost to me. Had lots of Macs. This is the first to crash and burn and its not that old.

I have a SATA hard drive that works perfectly when connected through an external USB enclosure but whenever it's plugged into the internal SATA connector on my MacBook Pro I receive the error message "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." any time I attempt to move or copy a file to it.
This doesn't happen with any other hard drive I connect internally, so I don't believe it's an issue with the internal cable.
I have made sure all permissions are set to allow reading and writing to the drive as well as selecting the "Ignore ownership on this volume" option in the Get Info panel.

I just removed my Windows 7 using Bootcamp, since it wouldn't start up properly anymore. The thing is, there was this error in Bootcamp while uninstalling Windows. I wasn't able to read all of what the error was, so I removed the Windows again, or at least that's what the Mac seemed to be doing, until it got stuck somewhere for a suspiciously long time. I forced quit it, which might've been a bad move. So anyway, when I checked Bootcamp again, the option for removing Windows wasn't there anymore, so I assumed all is well. Until I saw the storage and Diskutility."
I did Verify Disk and Repair Disk before the last image. As you can see, the disk appears to be OK. But obviously it's not. The Windows 7 I had seems to have been uninstalled, since I can't find it in the selection part when pressing "alt" while turning it on.

So here's the deal: I have a 64Gb iphone with 1GB available, and a 256Gb macbook retina with 17Gb free space.
The iphone backups are taking up a lot of space on the macbook. I looked into moving the backup files to an external drive and using a soft link to link it all together, but that's a lot more complicated than is necessary, so I just pressed option when opening itunes and created a new library on the external drive with 1TB free space (as reported by Finder).
I can verify that the computer is using the external library as when I transfer purchases, that library on the external grows in size And doesn't have any of my old content. However, when I try to back up the phone (which is around 30GB) I get the error message that itunes cannot backup the phone because there is not enough space left on the computer, even though the external disk has a terabyte left. I know it's because the macintosh hd has only 17 Gb, is there any way to get round it?

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. with cloning/copying the content one an external hard drive onto a new external hard drive. Basically, I have a 500GB FW400 drive which I use to store my media files. It's full, so I purchased a 1TB FW800 drive to replace it. Obviously, I thought I could simply copy and paste the media files from the old drive to the new one.I cannot copy the media files to my internal drive first as my internal drive is only 250GB and nearly full itself.I have used Disk Utility to attempt to close the old drive to the new drive, but keep getting "insufficient space" errors.

I want to save the hard drive and put it in a case, then use it as an external drive on my other Macs.
What sort of case do I need to shop for? Should I look for SATA or what exactly is the proper nomenclature.
