At the past month I get this error message (in picture), the external disk is WD 500GB disk. The finder became unresponsive and I need to do one of 2 things: or just to unplug the power cord from the disk and in this way force eject it or just force restart my iMac.
View 1 RepliesI am trying to copy about 12000 songs from my internal HD to an external so I can wipe my drive clean and start again. The problem is that I keep getting this "disk cannot be read from or written to" every few hundred songs. The songs have come from all over, and there is no common thread to how I acquired any of them. I've actually got this error when trying to copy several different file types to an external HD and I've no earthly idea why. I'm sure the drive is riddled with irreparable errors which is why I want to wipe it, but I need to get a lot of these files over before I do so. Can anyone recommend some kind of utility that will identify and/or repair these corrupt files so I don't have to stop and start the transfer every 30 seconds?

When I open the local hard disk in Finder, the computer gets stuck for several minutes, until Finder opens the hard disk.
I have an alu iMac with a 500GB HDD. There is about 200GB free. Every time I run the Bootcamp Assistant, choose a Windows partition (doesn't matter what size), it sits with the progress bar spinning for ages before it gives me the error "Disk could not be partitioned as some files cannot be moved. Please reformat the disk and try again". There is no way I can back the disk up, reformat, reinstall and re-update everything. No other apps are running when I run the Bootcamp Assistant.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to get my mac to start up, it won't get past the gray screen with the apple logo and spinning wheel. I have tried to use utility disk to fix the problem but it kept coming up with error- could not complete. It would also not see the hard drive in OSX 10.4 when trying to archive before re- installing. So we opened it in OS 9 which worked and we could see the hard drive. We restarted the mac in OS 9 in the hope that we could re- install OSX 10.4 from there. It will go right through the installation but comes up with error again when validating.
View 1 Replies View Related I upgraded my MacBook Pro quad core 2.5 from Lion to Mavericks. Since then I get a LOT of beachballs when I'm using Finder. I repaired permissions, deleted com.apple.finder.plist (twice) and finally reinstalled Mavericks over the first one. Still painfully slow and lots of beachballs.

I am trying to use Syncopation to sync my iTunes library between my iMac and two Macbooks. I have had success in the past, but haven't used the program for a while (yeah...lazy!). Now, whenever I go to run the sync, I get this:
Cannot read from socket. error 0
Any ideas?
It may well be unrelated to Syncopation.
I recall data socket errors being an old windows thing, usually due to viruses or malware. Obviously, that's not a problem I should be having on my iMac. I don't get the error running anything else.
I have an external Transcend HD, which has been working perfectly fine for around 5 months now. It is NTFS, and I use NTFS-3g and Macfuse. Been running fine. Was able to read and write. Suddenly I am only able to read though. I go into the "Get Info" pane and the option to choose whether I want to read and write, or read only is gone, and all that it says is "You can read only". getting this back to read and write is really appreciated. I really need this disk.

I've just upgraded to a larger Verbatim external drive and when I go to take files off my existing external drive across to it, it keeps coming up with the error: The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in *** can't be read or written. This only happens in certain folders. I am able to copy some folders across, but some I get this error. I've tried verifying both drives, formatting the Verbatim one for FAT32, repairing, but nothing seems to work. Some points that may be worth mentioning:
- The original external drive is formatted as MAC OS X Extended Journaled.
- Some of the folders I am having trouble with may have been originally created on a PC.
I would like to keep the new drive as FAT32, so I can use it on a PC if I need to down the road. I read something about using dot_clean via terminal, but I can never seem to get the path correct to my external drive. (The name of the external drive is MASTER HD) Would appreciate if anyone else has had the same problem could tell me what they did to solve it? Not sure why some files will copy over and some wont?
I accidentally dragged a document into the top bar of the finder. Now when I open the finder, there is a document on the top of the gray bar at the top of the finder window. When I try to click on it to drag it away, it automatically opens the document. Does anyone know how to get rid of this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had windows vista installed but suddenly the audio decided to become faulty, after spending a day trying to fix it i realized I have a windows 7 install disc so i might as well just replace vista with windows 7. I didnt take care of vista or ever register it so it became quite a task to upgrade so i just deleted the partition and went to create a new one and just do a full install of windows 7.
I made the partition but the wrong format, so i removed it through boot camp assistant and created another, except now it keeps giving me the "back up the disk and use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using boot camp assistant again" Now, I'd love to do this, except I have no idea what I'm doing and WHY this error has occured. After becoming frustrated I switched from my imac to my macbook pro and received the same error when trying to create a partition. So any help on exactly what I need to do would be a HUGE help. I only use windows for music production (I know, seems backwards, but I use Sony Acid and FL Studio so I'm stuck with Windows)
Every time I try to export a movie in iMovie or burn a disk in iDVD an error message pops up and says that my startup disk is full. So I bought an external hard drive and backed up my mac using Time Machine. Now I want to delete everything off my mac's internal Hard Drive and use my external hard drive so I can empty my disk. Does this make sense? If so will you please tell me how to do so.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWithin the last week, all of our computers have developed a 'bouncing E'! The entourage symbol jumps up and down and demands attention, there is a box saying 'Entourage could not read this .rge file', it never stops, it just comes back every half hour or so. I suspect it has something to do with sharing projects, but we have done nothing differently from normal so can't trace the reason. It's possibly linked to when one person sent an invite to all the others asking them to attend and event but I'm not sure.
It was also suggested it might be because there is a lot (ie up to 10 years in one case!) of email in the in box, but we have been doing some clearing out with no result. I don't know much about macs and am in the dark here, and everyone is blaming me as it was my idea to create a shared diary/contacts list in entourage. Some other forum said to find the corrupted file, but I've no idea where to look or even how to tell that it's corrupt.
I have one of the older macbooks [the ones that were given out during summer '07, that came with the free ipod nano], and it used to burn cds fine but today I tried inserting a cd and it burned three songs and then said burn medium error. now when i put in a cd there is some scratching and whizzing and other random noises, and after a few minutes it spits it out without asking what I want to do with it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a problem when I'm transferring files from my powerbook g4 to external hard disks such as lacie or ipod. It keeps popping up "the finder cannot complete the operation because some data in file AVI could not be read or written. (Error Code -36). This happens just for certain files, not all of them. I don't know whether the hard disk has an issue or the file is corrupted and if the file is corrupted I hope there is a program that can restore it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running OSX 10.4.11 on a 12" PowerBook 1.5 GHz with 1.25 GB of RAM and an 80 GB HD.
When I run the disk Utility to Verify Disk, it ends with the message, "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit." This happens if I run the Disk Utility from the hard drive, from the OSX installation disk or from an external hard drive.
The Repair Drive button is always grayed out no matter where I am running the disk Utility from, too.
So far, I haven't had any other unusual things with the operation, but I'm concerned that this could be an early warning of problems to come.
Has anyone else had this problem or have a clue?
I have cloned the entire hard drive onto an external drive with Carbon Copy Cloner. I know PPC systems won't boot from a USB drive, but I was considering booting from the install disk, re-formatting the drive from there and then re-installing from the external by running CCC from there. I hope someone will have a direct solution to repairing the drive without doing all of that.
I just got my computer yesterday and when running the "repair disk" function, I already get an error! Since I used migration assistant to move everything off my old mac to my new mac, I'm not interested in reinstalling the whole OS and transffering all my files again. This is a new computer, and shouldn't have this problem this early. I also get the same result when starting up in the recovery partition. How do I resolve this?

When ever I try to move a file from an FTP server to my desktop I always get an error saying some data cant be read or written. I have tried it with like five different FTP's and I get the same error. Here is a grap of the error.

The backup volume is read only.
To select a different volume, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine.
I didn't change anything to make it read-only, and it's far from full.
a friend of mine has some problems with her DVD drive.
It does not accept some video DVDs as it seems, but not always the same, that seems to be varying.
Also there is this strange error message, which I can't get my head around, as NTFS-3G should have nothing to do with CDs or DVDs, as they use a completely different and independent file system.

She runs Mac OS X 10.5.8 on a 15" Unibody MBP with 2.4GHz and 4GB RAM (early 2009) and has NTFS-3G installed to transfer data onto NTFS formatted drives.

I have a message that pops up and disappears before I can get a chance to read it. I figured it may be an issue with an application since MS office 11 is installed and was running at the times also, before a reminder pops up a message appears. I fear there may be a potential issue with the OS or an application.

I am on OX 10.4.1.1 I think or maybe just 10.4.1 I know that some corrupted files got on my desktop and its preventing me from accessing my desktop but I can still get applications to run, I tried removing the files using Terminal but when I do so it says Access Denied. This is my computer and there are no other users on this. I believe I backed up all my files to an External a few days before, how to get finder to load properly so I can delete the corrupted files or know another way to get the files to the trash since I cannot see them.

Ok so I have an 8800 GS imac, 3.06 intel core 2, 4 gigs ram. Running snow lepord. I need to resolve an issue where I can not get into OSX. At first I got error messeges saying my external HDD could not read, now it looks like its my primary drive because when I restarted I got the progress bar under the apple logo, indicating that something is wrong with the OS. The bar when to full 100% but then I got stuck at never ending spinning wheel. I restarted and no more progress bar but still the spining wheel of death. I really dont mind refomrating its just that I had some important text documents and other files that I cant get back without recoving them some how. How to proceed? I held down cmd v or s (i forgot) on startup and got a black screen with several problem statements. One reads the system boot strapper has crashed trace BPT trap.

I'm trying to copy from my Vista hard drive to my Mac hard drive. I'm getting rid of the Vista machine.
I took out the hard drive from the Vista and put it in an external enclosure that is USB attached to my Mac. The Mac is unable to read the drive.
I thought that leopard was able to read NTFS file systems?
It acts as if it doesn't even understand the partition table format on the drive.
Is there a simple way to get this to work? Does NTFS-3G help reading the partition table?
