OS X :: Finder Stuck Wont Show Desktop Items

I am on OX 10.4.1.1 I think or maybe just 10.4.1 I know that some corrupted files got on my desktop and its preventing me from accessing my desktop but I can still get applications to run, I tried removing the files using Terminal but when I do so it says Access Denied. This is my computer and there are no other users on this. I believe I backed up all my files to an External a few days before, how to get finder to load properly so I can delete the corrupted files or know another way to get the files to the trash since I cannot see them.

I have a Mac OS X version 10.5.8, one of the 2008 black/white models. Yesterday, I was messing around with my computer because the hard drive will not show up in the finder (I already did the system preferences, doesn't work). However, I guess I must have deleted something because when I restarted my computer, the menu bar blinks in and out unless i get onto safari but I can't get into finder at all. Also, All of my items on my desk top are gone. And I can't get into Itunes (file locked, on a locked disk, or do not have written permission to enter it)
I'm assuming this means I need to take it in and get it fixed. But I wanted to see if I can do anything to avoid that because I am in college and have a paper every week so I pretty much live off of my computer.

1) my desktop items are invisible including HD, cds, memory sticks etc
2) i'm unable to access finder
3) i'm unable to open folders (library, pictures, music) unless using an already open application (pictures in safari)
4) i'm unable to use apple/top toolbar unless application is open

I have been using WD 1TB external USB hard disk for 4 months with my Macbook with Tiger 10.4 on it. I have plugged in the disk after I purchased without any special formatting or anything, and it worked fine so far. It just took a while, about few minutes, for the Macbook to show it on the desktop every time I got it disconnected and connected again. However, this time, I can not see the disk on the desktop nor on the Finder no matter what. I have plugged it in and out several times, I have restarted the machine etc. Nothing works. The disk is quite empty and it works fine with the PC..no cable problem or and disk failure issue for sure. I can see the disk on the Disk Utility app, but I can neither verify nor mount it...

i was wondering if anyone can tell me why the mac HD icon that i have on my desktop wont show up in my finder>desktop page. other apps that i have on the desktop show up on the desktop page but the mac HD icon is not there.

This doesn't happen all the time, but frequently enough to create a thread about it to find out what's going on.
I usually keep my desktop empty and use it to store stuff I'm going to process in the next hour anyway.
Sometimes my desktop is absolutely empty, but when I navigate to the following path: UserDesktop, the files do show up.

How do I get the sent items to show who I sent the email to? Right now it lists the "from" (me). It basically has my name over and over and over again. Makes it difficult to speed through and find an email.I've gone through the settings and such but didn't find an obvious check box - did I miss something?

Does anyone else have a problem with items getting 'stuck' between desktops so that you can see them as you move between desktops, but can't access them? Â
I created an e-mail by dragging a photo to the Mail icon in the dock, but nothing happened so I repeated the exercise. Still nothing happened. I then created the e-mail by copying and pasting the photo into a new blank e-mail and thought nothing more about it. But now, when I swipe between desktops, I can see the two e-mails, complete with photos but no text, straddling two desktops but can't click on them to delete them.

I have unchecked every app in the Login Items menu in System Pref. Even deleted them out of the menu. Safari, iTunes, Mail, and a Finder folder show up automatically when I restart or login to my iMac. I have read some posts on this and I'm also aware that you can right click on the app in the dock and make sure it is unchecked to open at login. This problem seems to have started after I removed programs I did not want to start up in the Login Item menu in System Preferences.

Has anyone had problems with the latest update ? My Mac seems to be stuck on installing 3 items - running package scripts..I also have an installation alert that says to close iTunes to continue installation. However iTunes wasn't even opened when I started the software update.

I have just updated to Lion and now my folders no longer show number of items on the bottom. Is there a fix for this? I allways found that handy. Now I have to click on an icon on the top, This is a backward step if that is now the only way to see the number of items.

In Purchased Items,We need a Show/Hide Button to show any Resolution from 720 to 1080p, so we may see exactly what is D/Led, and what we may have missed, or need, we don't have. At any resolution Offered from what we purchased and Deleted to save space on Drives. I have deleted all but the 1080p copies. Have I missed any 1080p from my Library I need? iTunes should be able to show this information. Select the 1080p choice and any purchase that has not been D/Led in the selected Resolution will show up in the Purchased window. *(only the resolution's selected).Also in Search we should be able to search by Resolution and Time (duaration of film)

This is an odd one. I have two items in my Finder window that will not go away no matter what I try. These pop up when I'm using Toast or DVD Studio Pro or other disk burning functions. These particular two appeared now won't go away. Snap shot of Finder. It's the two items "Untitled DVD 4"Â

I recently upgraded to a Apple 10.4.11. I have this annoying problem I can't figure out. With my previous Mac, I could put anything on my desktop anywhere I wanted. For some reason, on this desktop, there only seem to be a limited number of "slots." By slots, I mean each item can only be placed on a specific place and there is a specific amount of space between and around each item. Once these are used up, any additional items pile on top of each other. It looks like I have five rows of six items each (you name it, pictures, Word documents, Excel documents, etc.) I hate this. I want to be able to put or move anything anywhere I want. How do I fix this?

I've noticed in the February desktops thread (in the Pictures category) that some people have their drive icon names appearing beside the icon rather than beneath it. How do you do this? Also, some of the photos show the size of the drive as well as how much space is left. How do you do this? See this post for what I'm talking about. [URL]. I frequently want to grab a ton of junk on say my desktop and sort them into folders. Process is "make new folder, select all the items I want to go in it, drag them to it, name folder, move folder to where I want". What I want it to be able to do is select all those items and have a contextual menu command "Make New folder from selected". Ideally, popping up an Open/Save dialog letting me choose where to put the new folder and allowing me to name it. On closing dialog, I have my new renamed folder with all my selected stuff in it, wherever I want on my HD with no extra dragging and clicking. Does this sound worthwhile to anyone else? Am I missing some way that this can be done? Seemed like an obvious thing to me, was kind of puzzled to discover (AFAIK) no way to do it.

Basic questions: When I drag an item to the desktop, say, a mail message, it always appears on the right side of the screen no matter where I release my mouse on the drop. Is there any way to have an item appear where I release the drag-and-drop, or will the dragged item always go to the right side of the desktop?
Another question: is there any way to select a bunch of mail messages and drag them into a folder. I know you can do it where all the emails get merged into one text file, but is there a way to keep them all as individual emails with a group drag and drop?

I don't usually turn off my MB, only when I need to bring to school then it's off. Well, when turn it back on, the items on desktop are not in the same place, I have to rearrange them. Preferences are set.

Re: Burning Desktop files and documents to a DVD - iMac - Lion. According to the "Help" feature, I put in a blank DVD and selected Finder as I was asked to do. I tried to move some files into the blank DVD window from my Desktop. But I could only move ONE file into the blank DVD window. It would NOT let me move any more files into the blank DVD window after moved the first one in. Why is that?  Â
The "Help" featuer said I could move in my files and documents one at a time and them burn them all on the DVD. This is what did for years on my older iMac with Panther.Â
how to simply burn my Desktop folders and documents to a DVD. I did figure out how to burn ALL of the Desktop items to a DVD at the same time. I am asking about individually moving the items into the DVD window to be burned.Â

The finder keeps wanting my admin password to put items in the trash - is there a solution to this? Repaired permissions, only an admin user on the machine, no other users.
