OS X V10.7 Lion :: Error With Disk Utility When Repairing Disk

Jun 26, 2012

I just got my computer yesterday and when running the "repair disk" function, I already get an error! Since I used migration assistant to move everything off my old mac to my new mac, I'm not interested in reinstalling the whole OS and transffering all my files again. This is a new computer, and shouldn't have this problem this early. I also get the same result when starting up in the recovery partition. How do I resolve this?

OS X Yosemite :: Corrupt Disk Is Not Repairing With Disk Utility

Dec 4, 2014

Disk Utility when I run verify says I need to reboot from the Repair Disk. I tried (twice) and it shows no problems. When I reboot normally, and run DU, I get the same error. Which result should I believe?? And is there a workaround? Using 10.10.1 / Air late 2011.

OS X :: Repairing Permissions For HD Using Disk Utility

Dec 16, 2009

I've been having some real odd things going on with Snow Leopard. I thought that repairing permissions and repairing the disk may help. I ran the tests, but there are errors that look like they cannot be fixed. Below I posted the log file from Disk Utility:

Code:
2009-12-16 15:44:25 -0700: Disk Utility started.
2009-12-16 15:45:12 -0700: Repairing permissions for "Macintosh HD"
2009-12-16 15:46:43 -0700: Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are lrwxr-xr-x .
2009-12-16 15:46:43 -0700: Repaired "usr/share/derby".
2009-12-16 15:47:09 -0700: Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
2009-12-16 15:48:55 -0700:
2009-12-16 15:48:55 -0700: Permissions repair complete
2009-12-16 15:48:55 -0700:

What I should do since Disk Utility won't repair the problem?

Windows On Mac :: Partition Error - Back Up Disk And Use Disk Utility To Format

Oct 9, 2010

I had windows vista installed but suddenly the audio decided to become faulty, after spending a day trying to fix it i realized I have a windows 7 install disc so i might as well just replace vista with windows 7. I didnt take care of vista or ever register it so it became quite a task to upgrade so i just deleted the partition and went to create a new one and just do a full install of windows 7.

I made the partition but the wrong format, so i removed it through boot camp assistant and created another, except now it keeps giving me the "back up the disk and use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using boot camp assistant again" Now, I'd love to do this, except I have no idea what I'm doing and WHY this error has occured. After becoming frustrated I switched from my imac to my macbook pro and received the same error when trying to create a partition. So any help on exactly what I need to do would be a HUGE help. I only use windows for music production (I know, seems backwards, but I use Sony Acid and FL Studio so I'm stuck with Windows)

OS X :: Disk Utility To Verify Disk Ends With Error?

May 10, 2010

I'm running OSX 10.4.11 on a 12" PowerBook 1.5 GHz with 1.25 GB of RAM and an 80 GB HD.

When I run the disk Utility to Verify Disk, it ends with the message, "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit." This happens if I run the Disk Utility from the hard drive, from the OSX installation disk or from an external hard drive.

The Repair Drive button is always grayed out no matter where I am running the disk Utility from, too.

So far, I haven't had any other unusual things with the operation, but I'm concerned that this could be an early warning of problems to come.

Has anyone else had this problem or have a clue?

I have cloned the entire hard drive onto an external drive with Carbon Copy Cloner. I know PPC systems won't boot from a USB drive, but I was considering booting from the install disk, re-formatting the drive from there and then re-installing from the external by running CCC from there. I hope someone will have a direct solution to repairing the drive without doing all of that.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk (1 Partition) On External Hard Drive

Apr 24, 2012

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!

Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'.  And it needs to be reformatted.  It's become a read only disk.  When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question.  I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969!  These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.

I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure.  Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state!  Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive?  And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Use Disk Utility To Repair Encrypted Disk Partition

Apr 6, 2012

I have run the Disk Utility verify function against my system partition. It tells me there are minor issues that need fixing up and I should run the repair disk function, by booting using Command-R and using the Disk Utility to repair the drive.Problem is, when I boot using Command-R and select Disk Utility the partition is shown greyed out and the Verify and Repair options do not work.I think this could be because the partition is encrypted. The utility does not offer me the chance to unlock the partition with my passphrase. How can I repair the filesystem errors on this partition?

MacBook Pro :: Lion On Ssd Crashed - Disk Utility 'cannot Repair The Disk'

Apr 25, 2012

Fortunately I got a time machine backup. And its restoring the drive while in Lion recovery mode. Here's what happened... I dont have a router a my place at the moment and so my two phones (iphone 4 and htc android) connect to my internet using my MBP's wifi via internet sharig. For some reason they were not able to get an IP from the mbp. After doing some wifi swtich toggles and forgettig & rejoining the network, i decided to reboot all my devices. I shut down my modem, phones and restarted my mbp. On reboot, after the chime, it showed an unsusal 'progress bar' under the apple logo. The bar progressed to about 10% and then the mbp just powered off. This happened several times even after PRAM and SMC reset.

So now i booted with cmd+r pressed and in recovery mode ran a 'verify disk'. It said the verification stopped and that i should repair the disk. When i tried to do that it said the disk cannot be repaird and that i should back up as many files as possible and attempt to format the disk and restore it with time machine. It is precisely what im doing at the moment.

1. Mbp wont sleep even when internet sharing is off

2. Mbp wont lit the onboard display upon opening it in clamshell mode until i removed the 3.5mm audio cable of my speakers from the audio out port!

MacBook :: Repairing Disk With Another Installation Disk?

Jun 30, 2014

My startup disk is almost full so I tried to repair disk in Disk Utility but only 'verify disk' was available, which led to the following error message: "This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk." I have recently moved countries and cannot seem to find my installation disk anywhere (stupid, I know). Is there another option, such as using someone else's installation disk (since nothing is actually installed from the installation disk in this process, right?) or does it have to be my own installation disk? It is an old MacBook (2007), running OSX 10.6.3.

OS X :: Won't Work With Disk Utility Error

Aug 26, 2009

I clicked "Verify Disk" and i got that, the other two options worked. I read up on this on Apple's site but I am not having any other issues than the notice. I was told to run Disk Utility ever so often to keep my mac fast. I just happened to do it today and I got that. I am trying to avoid having to do ANY sort of reformat.. I don't have any means of backup. Like I said I am not having any other problems. I am able to restart and log in without any problems. Should I be worried about this since there is no other issues besides the notice itself?

PowerPC :: Disk Utility Indicated Unknown Error With HD

Jun 16, 2009

I have spent all day with a colleague wrestling with a 4 and 1/2 year old G5 tower that has been throwing up all sorts of cranky errors. (i.e. firefox crashes, flash crashes, programs wont load, itunes stops working, firewire drives make it insane). As part of the diagnostic flow, I attempted to verify permissions on the core HD. Disk utility only took a couple seconds to determine that there is some unknown error with the HD, and it cant continue. This leads me to believe that we are dealing with a flailing drive, which very well MAY be the root of the problems! Time to make an external clone onto a fresh HD, and see if that helps.

Install CCC 3. Open CCC 3, it hiccups on the dock, and then nothing. *roll eyes*. Install super duper. Run super duper. Now super duper refuses to let me make a bootable clone of the core HD? Fine, if that is how you want to play this game. I get two SATA enclosures. Put the suspect drive in one, and then a fresh drive in the other. Plug both into my MBP where i run a CCC bootable clone. Couple hours later, it is complete. Plug the new clone into the G5 tower, and it does not see it as a bootable drive. Okay, lets try the CCC clone again. Same result. I am desperate for options.

OS X :: Burn ISO To USB Or External HDD With Disk Utility - Error 254

Jul 28, 2009

I am desperately trying to burn a ISO file to a USB and external HD but Disk Utility does not want to. Instead I get the error message "Could not validate source - error 254". So there must be a problem with the source which is the ISO file.

I already tried setting the Partition Map Scheme to both Master Boot Record and GUID Partition Table. I also formatted the drive to FAT and HFS+. I cannot find the cause of this error. It clearly looks like Disk Utility does not like burning ISOs to USBs or HDs.

However, I really really need to this since I cannot burn ISOs with my SuperDrive which is also a common problem [URL]with my MacBook Pro.

OS X :: BootCamp & Disk Utility - Partition Error

Jun 7, 2010

I just restore my Mac OS to a single partition and then I tried re-partitioning but it's giving me an error.
I've tried several times, tried using different sizes every time. My HD's capacity is 250GB, and I've got 108.95GB free. So I am sure that making a new partition of 35 - 40 GB is not a big deal. I also tried using Disk Utility, both from the Mac OS install disc and while using the Mac OS itself, but it keeps giving me this error. I do not want to format my Macintosh HD's partition because I don't have an external HDD on me at the moment so I will not be able to back up. I have a lot of important data that can not be deleted.

MacBook Pro :: Won't Fix / SDHC Disk Utility Formatting Error

Sep 30, 2010

I am trying to format a SDHC card on my MBP. I am trying to create a recovery SDHC disk for my MBP.
The disk is a Transcend 16gb (class 10).

I formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) w/ a GUID Partition Table but after this, Disk Utility is now showing only 10.38 gb of usable space, but finder is showing me the full amount (15.79 gb). When I look in finder there are NO files or folders on the drive.

I tested trying to put more than 10.38 gb worth of files on the disk and was told there was not enough space. If I format the disk to anything other than Journaled, I get the full 15.79 gb. Has anyone ever experienced this before?

Software :: Powerbook G4 Disk Utility Error / No Dock

Dec 4, 2009

I have a G4 powerbook from around 2004 that was running slow so I tried updating the mac software since I hadnt done it in a while after downloading and installing the suggested items my computer has gone a lil crazy. First off i noticed my dock is completely missing and I've tried numerous things to fix it that were suggested to me but nothing has worked.

Next I attempted to do some restoring using disk utility that had also been suggested and it turns out disk utility wont even run I get the error message "You cannot open the aplication "disk utility" because it may be damaged or imcomplete". This message also appears when i attempt to open safari or itunes.

I am no longer able to find my restore discs so I dont have that option at the moment, any help would be greatly appreciated, I am about to go back to school to pursue another degree and not having to buy a new comp would be great news.

here are the items that were installed with the update:
