OS X :: Disabling Font Smoothing System Wide?
May 4, 2010Is this possible yet? I've already done it so that text under 12 px is not smoothed but I wish there was a way to do this system-wide.

View 1 RepliesIf you go into System Preferences>Appearance>Font Smoothing Style, You'll see a drop down menu with different choices. I think the best looking font smoothing type is "Standard - best for CRT". I've tried all the other styles and they don't look good to me. I think the other styles look too sharp, too bold and I don't like colored pixels around the edge of my text.
By the way, in Snow Leopard, there's only 2 options now. It's just a checkbox that says: [ ] LCD Font Smoothing. When checked, it acts like "Medium - best for flat panel" and when unchecked it acts like "Standard - best for CRT". What is your favorite font smoothing style? For changes to take effect, you have to quit and relaunch your apps to see the difference.
Many are having issues with font smoothing not working correctly on external displays with SL 10.6.
I researched this issue and found this blog posting:
URL
the blog itself discusses the issue, and the fix is found in the comments.
Basically, for now the fix is to open Terminal App and enter:
"defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 2″
without the quotes, and hit return.
a log out or restart might be required.
this fix seems to stick even after re-boots and shut-downs.
We're fed up with portable home directories and the constant sync errors they throw up. Can I just turn off PHD to make it function as it did before? How best to go about this?

Mac OS X (10.6.8)
I've recently installed Mavericks (10.9.3) and noticed I have the same persistent issue I had in Mountain Lion (10.8.4), and if I remember correctly in Snow Leopard as well. Font book keeps disabling some fonts (mostly .ttf fonts though there are exceptions). I always reenable them, but after a reboot they keep getting disabled. I read somewhere that the font book preferences are easily corrupted but my install is just a few days old? Even so, I have place the plist pref file on my desktop, but to no avail. I have removed duplicate fonts, and Suitcase. I have cleared my font cache, after which some of the "problem fonts" disappeared altogether and some fonts were enabled as they should be. After closing and reopening Font Book all fonts were present but were - again - disabled. They're not some fonts I found on a dodgy site, but Google fonts, as well as some "respectable fonts" such as Futura. And it's not just the entire font family, but a couple of weights.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAm I correct in the assumption that if I set the view options on the top level (OS-X HDD, for example) and select 'Use as Defaults' any folders below that (i.e. everything) will assume those settings?
If so, it doesn't seem to be doing that for me. I'm constantly coming across folders that I need to set the view options manually...
Im trying to help my mum set up her imac and she has asked me to help make the text bigger on the screen. Ive shown her how to zoom on word/safari/etc, however ideally I want to make all the text on the computer bigger - eg. menus at top of screen, finder text, etc...
The first thing I tried was adjusting the display resolution from 1920x1080 to 1600x900 or 1280x720, but this seemed to make the screen blurry.
Does anyone know if there is any other way that I can help make the text bigger for all system elements?
I have a problem with system wide shortcuts. I have managed to do the following:
A shortcut for Lock Screen in the key chain menu in menubar.

I regularly e-mail/chat back and forth with friends in the Netherlands and Germany, so I was wondering if there was a way for me to do a quick system wide language change that could spell-check for me. So, what are those little flags for on my Menu Bar? I have the Dutch, German, and American flags, but I don't notice any changes when I switch between the three.

When it crashes I get the wrong date and time and I'm unable to correct b/c of password protection, I'd also like to update the software etc. I thought I saw a thread about disabling the pw protection by holding down a key when starting up. Is this true? or Do I need to do a reinstall of the os? Will I be able to reinstall os even with password protection.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen ever I try to open or save a file in any application the spinning wheel is shown and the dialog takes from 5 to 20 seconds to display. Once it is on screen the speed returns to normal. I have a G5 Power Mac 1.6 GHz (Single Processor) 2 GB RAM (crucial) 2 SATA hard-disks (original 80 GB used as a clone for the 160 GB - I use carbon copy cloner) Everything else is as standard with the Mac. This problem started with 10.3 and may have been at the same time as installing the second 160 GB hard-disk, cloning the original to the new one, then changing the SATA cables around to make the new hard-disk on bus A. I then upgraded to Tiger but the problem still persists. I have tried repairing permissions and have used support tools like cocktail etc to check for hard drive issues and clear the cache files.
Also, on installing the second hard-disk, I also tried swap cop to change the swap file to the backup hard-disk. This did not work so I manual modified the files to return them to the original state. I did this while the system was running 10.3. I take it on upgrading to 10.4, the swap file config would have been fixed anyway? Everything else on the system seems fine. If nothing specific is found I may try removing the old hard disk.
As the title says i have migrated from Vista to OSX and im looking for a way to change all the fonts used by Leopard to one of my choosing.I find all standard fonts on either Windows or OSX too large and ugly and on Vista i used FontSelector to change the font and size across the system. What is the alternative for OSX?

These old eyes really need bigger fonts on my beautiful MacBook Pro. It is so easy to do in Windows. Why would it not be possible with my MacBook Pro? All the menus, tabs, icon titles, etc. fonts need to be bigger. It is not ergonomically correct to have to sit so close to my MacBook Pro.

I'm new to IMac and I did a quick search and found nothing. I got an IMac less than 24hrs ago. With the IMac I find that I struggle to read things even with my glasses on. Is there any possible way of changing the system font so I can make it larger? Trying to read things on the imac is actually giving me a headache because my eyes are straining so much.
I'm using FireFox which is great because once you make the page larger (cmd & +) it remembers so when you go back there the page is still large and readable but things like the toolbar is unreadable. Some sites I've been on even with the page zoomed in some of the writing remains tiny and unreadable. I have the 27" IMac and to have the toolbar font so small on such a big screen seems very silly to me because it's unreadable.

The issue I have is that in System Preferences, "Universal Access" has a bigger font size than any other window under S. Preferences. Nothing is affected, everything works well, but it just bothers me, is there any way to fix this?
I am attaching a screen of Universal Access compared with a window of normal font size.
Fonts on screen are much smaller than printed versions. Can't hardly see onscreen & I'm sending resumes!!

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just got some internet going again after having moved. I've had my new Octopus for a few weeks tho. So much to my surprise, I open up my gmail account and it's practically unintelligible. Some weird cartoon like font is my default font. As far as I can tell, all the default fonts are activated and all the settings point to the activated fonts, but this is driving me absolutely F__KING bonkers. Has anyone ever had this problem? Now to be fair, I did install some fonts from a semi questionable font disk a week or two ago, so maybe some rogue font has hijacked my web fonts.
