OS X :: Clearing Ubuntu Server USB Drive?

Dec 11, 2010

I have created a bootable USB flash drive to install ubuntu on my mac. Is it possible to restore that drive and clear it of everything, so that I can use it to store data again. It is quite a large capacity USB, so I would like to use it further. I have tried to drag the files into my trash, but it doesn't allow me too. If this is of any help, I used this tutorial on the ubuntu website to create the bootable drive via terminal: Ubuntu Server Guide ^ Click USB, Mac option.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Can't Connect To Ubuntu

Jun 6, 2012

I have a box running Ubuntu 12.04. I want to use a printer that is hooked up to this machine and also the DVD drive

I am using a Mac Mini with Lion Server (this is a Mac Mini with no DVD drive).

The Ubuntu machine sees the Lion Server and accesses files from it.

The Lion Server sees the Windows based machines on my network and accesses them fine The Lion Server does not see the Ubuntu machine.

OS X :: Installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS From Thumb Drive

Oct 9, 2010

I'm trying to install ubuntu from a thumb drive. Basically, I'm converting the .iso to an .img, and restore the thumb drive from the .img, trying to make it bootable. I'm following the procedure form the ubuntu website. Drag and Drop a file from Finder to Terminal to 'paste' the full path without typing and risking type errors.

Download the desired file
Open the Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/ or query Terminal in Spotlight)
Convert the .iso file to .img using the convert option of hdiutil (e.g., hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/path/to/target.img ~/path/to/ubuntu.iso)
Note: OS X tends to put the .dmg ending on the output file automatically.
Run diskutil list to get the current list of devices
Insert your flash media
Run diskutil list again and determine the device node assigned to your flash media (e.g. /dev/disk2)
Run diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN (replace N with the disk number from the last command; in the previous example, N would be 2)
Execute sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.img of=/dev/rdiskN bs=1m (replace /path/to/downloaded.img with the path where the image file is located; for example, ./ubuntu.img or ./ubuntu.dmg).
Using /dev/rdisk instead of /dev/disk may be faster.
If you see the error dd: Invalid number '1m', you are using GNU dd. Use the same command but replace bs=1m with bs=1M.
If you see the error dd: /dev/diskN: Resource busy, make sure the disk is not in use. Start the 'Disk Utility.app' and unmount (don't eject) the drive.
Run diskutil eject/dev/diskN and remove your flash media when the command completes
Restart your Mac and press alt while the Mac is restarting to choose the USB-Stick

Everything goes through fine, except, when I restart my mac to see the boot options. All I see is Macintosh HD

MacBook Pro :: Can't Boot Ubuntu From Flash Drive

Jul 8, 2010

I have a cd copy of ubuntu that works fine but is really slow.

I installed to a usb drive multiple times and keep running into the same problem: The flash drive shows up as "Legacy OS" in rEFIT and boots into my windows partition when I select it. It doesnt show up when I hold alt/option on startup. It also doesnt show up in the startup disc menu in system preferences even though its on the desktop.

I have used different usb drives and, like I said, have installed it multiple times. Every site I have gone to uses the same installation method (using ubuntu from a cd) and I dont understand why it wont work.

I have posted this probably in other sections and no one ever responds so Im hoping this will change.

*Deleting the external harddrive and reformatting it.

I want to be able to keep all my mac files. The file with a ? appears when the Ubuntu livecd is not in. (that is the only thing that boots).

OS X :: Flash / Thumb Drive Not Work In Windows Or Ubuntu

Jan 29, 2010

I got this weird issue with my 4 GB flash/thumb drive. Basically, in OS X it seems to work perfectly fine. I formatted it to HFS+ and transferred files to it, ejected it, then put it back in, the file is still there, I transferred it back to the computer, and it opens fine. However, when I put it in any machine running Windows, it'll only recognize 48 MB or something. It refuses to format the whole 4 GB.

When I plug it into an Ubuntu machine, it would recognize a "4 GB filesystem", but would throw up errors anytime I try to interact with it. And when I tried to format it with Ubuntu, it would invariably fail. From Windows and Ubuntu's views, the flash drive is no good. But then why does it *seem* to work fine in OS X? Yes, I have formatted the drive with MS-DOS (FAT) in OS X, same results in Windows and Ubuntu.

Windows On Mac :: Removing Ubuntu Partitions From Hard Drive

Mar 27, 2010

I know this isn't "Windows" per say, but I couldn't really find a closer forum to post in. I installed Ubuntu following their online guide using Bootcamp and such because I was curious. Now, it's not really working as much as I would like it to, and I'd like to remove the 90 or so Gigabytes I gave to Ubuntu in my partition.

I tried using the Disk Utility, and it always gets stuck on "preparing to remove partition". I waited for an hour and a half once, and it still had not progressed. I also tried using the Disk Utility off of my Mac OS X installation disk and saw the same failures and results. What can I do to remove this plaguing Ubuntu partition off of my hard drive for good?

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Replacing A Hard Drive Of RAID 5 System Just Ruined OS X 10.6.8 Server?

Jul 2, 2012

My system is MacPro 2009 with 10.6.8 server and Apple RAID card. Last week, RAID util just notified me of one drive is not viable, so i decided to replace the drive today. The configuration of my system is... There is an Apple Raid Card for HW Raid system Bay 1 = 640 TB drive with Mac OS X 10.6.8 server installed Bay 2, 3, 4 = 1.5 TB drives set up as RAID 5 below is what I did to replace the degraded Bay 4...

1. I shut down the system

2. replaced the corrupted drive with the new hard drive

3. tried start the machine again. Now my machine refuses to start up with the blinking question mark... I guess that the system fails to recognize the new drive or cannot find the system files...

4. So I put back the degraded drive...

5. The machine still won't start...

6. I tried to use the 10.6 server installation disk to boot up the machine to check if I can fix the system via disk util; but, everytime I do this, I got kernel panic...

7. resetting PR Ram didn't help, cannot boot up via safe mode as well (since the system file is not accessible now, I guess...).

8. booting via 10.6.2 server installation DVD still gives me kernel panic...

Why would my system corrupt by just replacing one degrade drive? The Mac OS X is not even the part of the Raid system... How am I supposed to fix this issue with out the installation disk?

OS :: Replacing A Hard Drive In A Server - Running OS X Server 10.3.9

Jun 2, 2008

I admin a network of Macs that use a 10.3.9 based OS X Server machine as a backup server. There is an iDisk account the server uses for iDisk backups and once a month I run a manual full back to CD. Tonight, the CD backup failed to run since the boot volume was basically full. Upon further inspection, I learned the boot volume is 6GB on a 20GB drive. So, I'm looking to possibly replace the hard drive. I'm also considering replacing the entire server with more modern hardware but that's another discussion. If I were to replace the 20GB hard drive in the server now with say a 60GB (we're talking PATA/IDE here) what would be the best way of doing it? We're talking about the boot volume now so I would need to move the OS and MBR and everything to the new drive.

Laptops :: New WEP Password - Clearing Or Resetting AirPort

Nov 12, 2009

My MacBook Pro 17" 10.5 has been working flawlessly for almost two years. I am in an RV resort and their WiFi system has been updated. Prior to that everything worked fine with the old WEP password. However, with the new system and new WEP password my Mac Book Pro will not acknowledge the new password. I know the info I'm inputting is correct because my old iBook is working fine with the new password. I can only conclude that I need to clear every thing out in respect to the old name (The new name hasn't changed), IP address, and WEP password, so Airport will see the new info as if it is for the first time.

I cancelled that.So I tried diskutil enableRAID mirror disk1, which told me I could only mirror volumes. The volume name is RAID, so I tried diskutil enableRAID mirror /Volumes/RAID which gave me an error "Error enabling disk to RAID Could not unmount disk (-10000)"

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Can't Use 3TB Drive In Xserve Drive Caddy?

Jun 14, 2012

I am using a 2006 Intel Xserve (10.6.8) at home for storing lots of multimedia. My 2 TB user drive, which is inside of one of the Xserve's drive caddies is nearly full. I purchased a $157 3 TB Seagate Barracuda (Model No. ST3000DM001) from Amazon and put it inside the caddy. It is not being recognized at all. Looking around for solutions I am getting a hint that trying to restrict the data rate to 1.5 GB/s might help, which is documented for some of Seagate's older SATA drives, where one puts a 2-mm jumper clip on a header next to the SATA connector. This 3 TB model has the same header, but the manual only speaks of data rate autonegotiation. I'll be able to try out the drive with the jumper clip in place tonight and will report back. Curiously, in my Thermaltake USB-2 interface (toaster style), Disk Utility shows the drive as "801.57 GB Generic External Media," which is being discussed in a Leopard Server discussion thread. Last I saw, there was no good explanation for this symptom.

Info:
Xserve, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Apple has made quite a bit of money off me over the years.
