OS X V10.7 Lion :: Clearing Hidden Backup Files From Startup Disk, Time Machine?

Apr 9, 2012

Moved all my movies audio etc and stored on external HDD, but as I have lion and time machine it saved a local back up so that when time machine was synced it didn't miss anything.Seems sensible, so next step was to sync time machine, expecting that the local back up would disappear when it shifted to TM. It didn't...why in gods green earth is the local back up there even though TM connected the whole time and up to date?  I've restarted, loaded all updates and verified disk. How do I get to the "it just works" part without having to Delete this double up (32GB "backups") via terminal etc....

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Backup Is Too Large For The Backup Disk?

Feb 10, 2012

my TM wil not back up! It states that this backup is too large for the backup disk. The back up disk requires 573.50 GB but only 225.23 GB are available. The TM needs work space on the backup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Upen TM perferences to select a LARGER backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding file.

Okay I;m sorry but obvioulsy I dont get this. I've never called Apple for help! I have every product they sell practically including Protection Plans I never used and no one will help me with this. My MAC is starting to have black or white screens and i can hear it running but it will not do anything so i have to reboot it, it screws up Enturage and then I have to rebuild that ( 5 times this year) anyway... I would like to back everything up- can I delete everything on the Time Capsule or Time Machine; god I dont even know what it is called Im so MAD... help if you can please. I'm going to have to take this to the genius people at the store and probably buy another computer but like before they will not save my files.

Software :: Possible To Copy Time Machine Backup Files To New Disk?

Dec 4, 2009

I currently back up onto a 250gb external hard drive using Time Machine. This is now full, so today I purchased a new 1TB drive. I would like to keep all my backups in one place, so would it be possible to copy all my past Time machine backup data/files to my new disk and then start backing up to this in the future. How to do I get Time Machine to see that I have swapped disks when I come to restore files? Will doing this confuse Time Machine?

OS X Mountain Lion :: Time Machine Backup Disk Not Available Over WAN?

Aug 25, 2014

I have port forwarded port 46 (TCP and UDP) to port 548 a Mac mini server running Mac OS X 10.6.8, and I have Time Machine backup disk on it set as a share point with Time Machine support enabled. On my Mac Pro running OS X 10.8.5, I am able to connect via AFP to my server with the address "afp://my-ip-address:46" and can read and write on the backup disk share point. I tested that, and it works. When I am on the same LAN as the server, I can use that disk for Time Machine and have been doing so for years. However, I cannot do a Time Machine backup to that share point over the WAN. When I open Time Machine preferences, I can select the share point as my backup disk, but once I start the backup, it says "Backup disk not available" and fails to start.

In case you're wondering, I forward port 46 to port 548 instead of port 548 to port 548 to minimize hacking attempts. Last time I used a default port, a computer in Taiwan started spamming SSH authentication failures.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Disk Drive May Not Support Time Machine Backup Over Network

Mar 28, 2012

Is time machine already/still supported on current OSX 10.7, or is it already deprecated as it was introduced several releases ago? When I try to activate Time Machine on my all new OS X Server, I get a dialog "Choose destination volume for client Time Machine backups:". I choose a volume, and the message is displayed "This disk drive may not support Time Machine backup over the network. Get more information about compatible drives."

"More information" links to [URL] which just provides commonplace advice to not disconnect drives while the drive is in operation. The support article is marked as archived and no longer updated after 10.5. The promised information is not provided. Is there anything obviously wrong with the setup?

Mac Mini Server, OS X Lion 10.7.3, 2x750 internal disks as RAID1, new of this month
External drive: 3TB USB3 Maxtor, single partition (repartitioned for GUID), connected via one of the internal USB2

The external drive is also used as Time Machine for the Server's local volume. I have read recommendations to use separate partitions per client, for time machine solutions using a third party NAS. Instead I chose the original - am I wrong to assume that the OS X Server's Time Machine service is able to manage multiple clients?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Enter Time Machine Does Nothing And Deleting Files In TM Backup?

Apr 11, 2012

I couldn't enter Time Machine backups, that is, "Enter Time Machine" from the Time Machine menu item did nothing. I tried Postini's recommendations about resetting, repairing the sparsebundle image, and tried accessing with the bundle mounted. Nothing worked.

What did work was Time Machine Preferences>Select Disk… and clicking Do Not Back Up. Then a new item appears in the Time Machine menu items: "Browse Other Backup Disks…" Selected that and then selected my backup. And then I was in.

My purpose was to delete some large movies that were taking up too much space. I went back to the Finder and opened the folder where the movies had been (I had deleted them in the Finder) then went back to "Browse Other Backup Disks…" and there was the folder in Time Machine. And I deleted the files. I was later able to reselect my Backup disk and the options were still saved. However I haven't seen the space recovered yet. I may have to read more on compressing the disk image if it doesn't fix itself soon.

Software :: Unable To Backup Via Time Machine / Backup Disk Image Could Not Be Created

May 1, 2008

I was a PC user who recently moved to mac. I have a macbook (intel 2.2GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD). When I was using PC, I backed up all my data to a network storage device (Buffalo LinkStation 250 GB connected to a 802.11g netgear router which is supplied by Sky) using a program called SmartSync Pro, which worked very well. Although I can connect to and mount the Share folder on this drive when the macbook is connected to the network, Time Machine will not back up to it. It wouldnt even recognise the disk on the network.

So I went onto the trusty internet, and found that you can get time machine to recognise the Share folder. (This was obtained from: http://blog.imulus.com/george/software/using-leopard-time-machine-to-backup-of-a-network/)See my comment on their page at the bottom, number 66.

It recommended entering the following in to the Terminal: defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

Before attempting backup I have to go into "Network" and select the Share folder by double clicking on it. This seems to mount the volume. After this, it can be seen in Time Machine as a potential backup destination.

However, this method does not work for me. Time Machine "prepares" for a while, then gives the following message: Time Machine error. The backup disk image could not be created.

More internet searching took me to macosxhints which suggests creating something called a sparsebundle image on my local system. (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080420211034137) Have not tried this yet as I thought it would be prudent to seek some help first.

Apple have deliberately disabled the ability for Time Machine to back up to network attached storage, (except of course to their proprietory Time Capsule):

Is this because time machine requires a network faster than 802.11g?

Is this because a time machine backup to a network attached storage device is unreliable and the data is corrupted?

I dont want to shell out more cash for a time capsule. I would prefer not to have to hardwire to an external drive (which I will also have to go out and buy). Any thoughts?

OS X :: Time Machine - Brand New Disk And First Time Backup Fails

Dec 6, 2010

So I bought a brand new WD 1TB Elements (USB) to use with Time Machine. I've never used a Time Machine before. I have a MBP13 with a 250GB disk, using the latest Snow Leopard, all updates installed. Formatted the drive to Mac OS Journaled (extended) and set it to use with Time Machine. Works until about 15-17GBs is copied over, than it fails:

1. If I start over it fails very soon after, no matter how many times I retry
2. No matter how many times I reformat it, it always fails
3. I tried one trick I googled - deleting the "inprogress" file - does NOT help
4. SMART status is verified
5. There are no problems if I verify/repair the disk.

The Disk still has some backups on it that I would like to keep. But I would like to use the extra space for regular file storage. What gives. When putting a file on the disk it asks for the password but moving them to the trash it will delete everything in the folder but it won't actually delete the root folder. So my question is

1. Can I use the disk and keep the backups on it?
2. How do I get permission to read and write to the disk
