Windows On Mac :: Removing Ubuntu Partitions From Hard Drive

Mar 27, 2010

I know this isn't "Windows" per say, but I couldn't really find a closer forum to post in. I installed Ubuntu following their online guide using Bootcamp and such because I was curious. Now, it's not really working as much as I would like it to, and I'd like to remove the 90 or so Gigabytes I gave to Ubuntu in my partition.

I tried using the Disk Utility, and it always gets stuck on "preparing to remove partition". I waited for an hour and a half once, and it still had not progressed. I also tried using the Disk Utility off of my Mac OS X installation disk and saw the same failures and results. What can I do to remove this plaguing Ubuntu partition off of my hard drive for good?

Windows On Mac :: Formatting As Single OSX Volume (Removing Ubuntu Partition)

Jul 2, 2010

Now, I set up a partition to run Ubuntu on my MacBook, but now I want to remove that partition to make room for Windows XP. When I go to Boot Camp Assistant, I try to click 'Continue' but it gives me this: I thought I could fix the problem using Disk Utility, but I couldn't understand what I could do. I thought it would work by erasing them, but I may have made the problem worse. Here is what it looks like: I tried booting the Ubuntu disc as I read I could remove the partition using that, but I don't understand how that would work.

Windows On Mac :: Multiple Partitions On USB Hard Drive - Active Partition

Dec 14, 2009

Just a quick rundown of what I'm trying to do here:I have a 1 TB external USB SimpleDrive hard drive that is currently partitioned into three partitions, two formatted with FAT32 and one formatted with HFS+ for Time Machine. I learned how to enable Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard's NTFS read-write capability today and so I no longer need to keep my first two partitions as FAT32 (especially since I have files larger than 4 GB I would like to store on them). I have data on the first FAT32 partition that I would like to transfer to the second FAT32 partition once I have reformatted it as NTFS whereby I will then be able to reformat the first FAT32 partition to NTFS without losing my data.I have nothing important on the second FAT32 partition, but when I opened Disk Management in Administrative Tools in Windows 7, I found that the second FAT32 partition is currently set as the active partition of that volume. When I right-clicked and asked to Format that partition exclusively, I received the following

Windows On Mac :: Get Back Lost Data/lost All Hard Drive Partitions After Windows Update?

Jun 26, 2010

I just booted into Windows and saw that there were some Windows Updates available and it asked me to reboot the computer however it failed to boot into Windows. So I restarted and tried to boot into OS X instead, but that didn't work either.

So I put in the OS X install DVD and checked out Disk Utility. Turned out that all my partitions where screwed up. There were 3 partitions listed as Windows_ldm, with incorrect sizes (I had 4 partitions before).

Long story short: I'm now reinstalling OS X and I lost everything I had on the drive, I think. I'll try some restore software once I've gotten OS X installed.

A little pissed right now... How the heck can Windows F up the entire drive?

*Backing up harddrive and installing Snow Leopard (10.5.4 is what it is)
*Deleting the external harddrive and reformatting it.

I want to be able to keep all my mac files. The file with a ? appears when the Ubuntu livecd is not in. (that is the only thing that boots).

OS X :: Flash / Thumb Drive Not Work In Windows Or Ubuntu

Jan 29, 2010

I got this weird issue with my 4 GB flash/thumb drive. Basically, in OS X it seems to work perfectly fine. I formatted it to HFS+ and transferred files to it, ejected it, then put it back in, the file is still there, I transferred it back to the computer, and it opens fine. However, when I put it in any machine running Windows, it'll only recognize 48 MB or something. It refuses to format the whole 4 GB.

When I plug it into an Ubuntu machine, it would recognize a "4 GB filesystem", but would throw up errors anytime I try to interact with it. And when I tried to format it with Ubuntu, it would invariably fail. From Windows and Ubuntu's views, the flash drive is no good. But then why does it *seem* to work fine in OS X? Yes, I have formatted the drive with MS-DOS (FAT) in OS X, same results in Windows and Ubuntu.

Hardware :: Using External Hard Drive Partitions And Formats?

Jan 27, 2009

I've just ordered a Seagate 500gb portable hard drive. I want it for backing up my 250gb Macbook, storing films and also for exchanging files between computers (Mac and Windows).

After reading various posts on the forums I'm planning on making 3 partitions:

1) 300gb for time machine backup. Mac OS X Extended (Is this the same format as HFS+ just a different name?)

2) 15gb for exchanging files. FAT32

3) The remainder for storing films. Mac OS X Extended.

Have i got these formats correct and are they suitable?

Also, i read that FAT32 is fragile and data can get wiped off it. If this did happen to the FAT32 partition, would it jsut affect that partition or could it damage data in all the partitions?

OS X :: External Hard Drive/Partitions/Time Machine

Jan 11, 2010

I have still another EHD/TM question and I can't quite figure out where to ask for the help I need.
I have a Mac Pro OS 10.5.8 with 2 internal drives and a large EHD that I was using solely for Time Machine Back Up. After a recent conversation with tech support at Apple, I've decided that I should have still one more full copy of stuff that is critical to me--my original photographs. I currently only have the backup copy on TM.

So, I want to take my large LaCie EHD and partition it. I want to store things as follows:
1. Internal HD #1-primary HD containing all data except original photos
2. Internal HD #2-HD that contains nothing but original photos
3. EHD (LaCie):
a. Partition #1: Second copy of original photos
b. Partition #2: Time Machine back up of HD #1 and HD #2.

It seems as if it is easy enough to do the partition but I'm wondering if there is a way to get my original photos to go into both HD #2 and Partition #1 of the EHD at the same time that I import them via a card reader.

If not, I'm wondering how I can set this up so that I don't have to remember to copy the photos from HD #2 to the EHD. Do I have to use another back up program? If so, any recommendations? Will using another program mess up Time Machine? What am I not thinking about?

MacBook Pro :: How To Rename External Hard Drive With Two Partitions

Jun 6, 2012

I have an external hard drive with 2 partitions: One for my video and music files (named jukebox) and another for time machine (named time machine). The external hard drive itself is a 1TB WD Elements. If I open up disk utility I can see the name "1TB WD Elements 1023" with 2 subpartitions as above named. Similarly when I plug it in to my playstation the drive is displayed as "USB WD Elements 1023". How do I change the name "1TB WD Elements 1023" to something else? I can find it in finder and I can seem to find any command to change it within disk utility. I really like to change it as I sometimes have another WD Elements drive plugged in to the playstation as well and they both have the same name which is confusing.

Info:
MacBook
Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

OS X :: Removing Partitions With Disk Utility Fails

Jun 23, 2010

Seems that I have messed up my Macbook Pro hark disk. Opening disk utility on macosx 10.5.8 shows that my disk in partitioned as this:
1)Macintosh HD
2)Apple_HFS disk0s3
3)Linux Swap

All of them appear to formatted as Mac OS extended (journaled) although the Linux Swap partition appears as Unmounted and cant be mounted nor use first aid on it. the others 2 appear to ok on verify disk test. What I want to do is remove partition 2 and 3. As I mention disk utility fails both under macosx and also when i use it booting from Mac OS X install disk. Should I use something like g-parted to boot from and re arrange my partitions or will this further mess up my disk? will MBR be affected?

Windows On Mac :: Getting Windows To Recognize Partitions On External?

Mar 10, 2010

I have an external drive that I've been using for Time Machine backups and file storage. I had two partitions to do this (one for TM and another for files). That was pleasing until I bootcamped Windows 7 to my Mac. Now I would like to use another partition for Windows Backup and yet another for files since I gave Windows only 15 gb to work with (my internal HDD isn't very big). No problem, I thought.

My external HDD is 1TB so I just split the ridiculously large Time Machine partition in half and split the half in half. Voila! Four partitions on the drive! However, Windows would not recognize it. After searching around on the netz, I opened Disk Management (somewhere in the Control Panel's administrative tools). It asked me to initialize the disc. Wary, I searched the netz once again to find that this will likely erase my data. So I haven't done it.

My questions:
1. Will "initializing" the disc actually erase the data that is already on it?
2. Is there another way to get Windows 7 to recognize the drive (and the two pertaining partitions)?
