OS X :: Can't Locate Initial Log In Picture
Oct 24, 2008
I just so happened to purchase a new MacBook today and I took a pretty nice picture of myself at the initial login; however, I can't find it ANYWHERE. Can someone tell me where this pic is located?

As stated in title, the desktop picture will randomly revert to a picture I had up there months ago, usually when I run the battery all the way down on my unibody MB, but also when I change display settings when i plug into an external monitor.
Do I just need just reset the PRAM or is there something else I'm missing.
BTW, I have searched and I know I only have a few posts...

the reason i am here in this one to one conversation its because my ipod got stolen on a Wedsnday; to be exact February 15th. I was in my third period class, which was gym and when i went to go look for my ipod since we had free choice of exercise, i didnt find my ipod but my headphones were in my bag, and my phone was there to. By a suprise where i left my ipod, they took out everything that was covering the ipod and just left my pink headphones. I'm here because i would like to replace my ipod.I know my apple id account, and password. I have the app locate my ipod.Sadly i couldnt locate it because it wasnt turned on.

I don't keep my computer on 24/7. Lately, when I start it up, it restarts on it's own. Sometimes, it seems to get through with the initial start up but shuts down & restarts after about a minute. Sometimes, however, it doesn't even finish the boot up process when this happens. This usually will happen over & over again a many times. The only short term solution I've found, is to unplug my computer, then restart it after a minute or so. This has not permanently fixed this problem however, because the next time I shut off, it happens again.

Pssst! Want an Intel 'Nehalem' processor on the cheap? Well, just go and ask the chip giant for one. It's 2.66GHz 'Bloomfield' CPU has been price at just $284, it has been claimed.
That's the batch price, of course. To get it, you'll have to buy a 1000 CPUs at once - boxed Bloomfields will come in slightly higher than that.
As previously reported, the 2.66GHz Bloomfield - Intel's desktop Nehalem - will also be made available in 2.93GHz and 3.2GHz versions. The pricing, posted by Chinese-language site HKEPC, confirms the latter will be an Extreme-branded gaming PC part - it'll cost $999. The mid-range Bloomfield will cost $562.

I was wondering if there is a way to disable the login prompt every time I close and open my MacBook Pro screen? I do not mind the initial login screen, when I just turn on my laptop but having to do this every time my computer goes into screensaver mode or I close the screen is annoying, especially in class. So could anyone help me out on how to avoid and disable this?

The macbook is about 6 months old and is running on Lion. whether this is hardware, software or virus? I have tried some different key press combinations to reset the MacBook to factory default setting but the problem is, no image was taken of the macbook in time machine and when bought, it did not come with a disc with OSX on.

And then open the begger up to find the Serial number, prod a few things, close up, then it starts? Anyone advise what's going on. Could it be it was too cold? My office gets cold? Could it be that I am turning the plug off at the switch when I don't use it and then it sometimes is bad to start up after a few days. Someone be strict with me and tell me what I am doing wrong (should I even be turning it off at the switch once turned off?)

My initial experiences with time machine were not great, glacially slow initial backup rate, left external HDD in unstable state that could not be repaired, stuck on "preparing" etc. The initial backup rate was minutes per Mb-unacceptable. Here are some steps I took, based on watching this and apple support discussion groups--this may not work for all problems being experienced. Turn off time machine Although TM doesn't require exclusive use of an external drive and will use HDs that have other data, you are placing those data at risk: Before you turn on TM backup anything you have on your intended time machine external disk, partition (as GUID) first, then erase (format as HFS extended, journaled) and check/repair permissions. (Don't let time machine format the disk)
- Exclude the external disk from spotlight indexing (or turn off spotlight altogether); certainly do not commence initial backup while spotlight is performing initial index after leopard install
- Turn off any virus checking!
- Remove TM plist file from any previous attempts and erase and trash any previous backup files
- Exclude any large frequently updated database files (Entourage, Parallels) from time machine.
If you have multiple drives that you don't intend including in your routine backup, make sure you exclude them in TM. Avoid daisy chained FW drives for the initial backup, time machine disk should be directly connected. That's about it, Time Machine backed up a ~90G system from a 2.4Ghz SR MBP to a LaCie 500G d2 (FW800) in about 120 minutes and has continued with hourly backups since.

I have a white macbook. Today, I downloaded "handbrake" off their site. I didn't realized that it would use almost all of my processing power, so I tried to convert a DVD to mp4 while doing other things. that didn't work so i restarted the computer and did it again, this time having that be the sole program running. it worked beautifully. Then, when I tried to get the mp4 file to iTunes, my computer froze and so i restarted it, and tried again. My computer froze again, so i restarted it again. This time, my computer did not load the desktop or anything after the initial startup By initial startup i mean first the ping, grey screen with apple and loading gear, and then the loading bar on the next page. it does all this, and if im correct, it is now supposed to show me my dock/desktop and everything, which it does not, it is simply a blue screen which occasionally flashes.
I've tried restarting the PRAM, running a hardware test, and repairing the permissions. After repairing the permisions, the blue screen does not flash but rather has a loading gear which does not stop spinning.
What should i do? i have an appointment at the Genius bar, but im sure they are going to make me buy some stuff that wont actually work. Is there anyway to fix this without losing my memory?

Just got my new imac, installed windows xp via bootcamp. Then ran parallels and it showed me an initial configuration thingie for this VM. It's been stuck on step 1 for well over 2 hours now, I was able to use a button to go into manual configuration but all this does it show me windows xp starting and then ending in a blue screen, then it simply returns to the configuration screen again, still showing it's at step 1 of 4. There is no way to quit the program as it keeps saying you must do all 4 steps.

My mum bought a MacBook two or three years ago, but after a while it became unbearably slow. She stopped using it. I recently dug it up to try to do something about it, needed her password for reinstalling the OS, which she of course forgot (the password, not the OS). Anyway, I messed around in Single User Mode and accidentally effed something up - the "Couldn't find root user. Sleeping and trying again." message started flooding the screen.
I read somewhere that I should delete a file that would make the MacBook show me the initial setup screen upon startup, so I did - all was well until I got to the end of registration. When I click 'Continue' it should take me to the screen responsible for creating a new login account - instead there is a grey 1px line in the middle of the light-grey box. I can still click 'Go Back', but that obviously takes me no-where.

Can the Time capsule be connected via USB for the initial transfer? Ineed to get stuff of an old PC, does that mean I need to install a "gigabit" network card in order to do the transfer (I assume there is a difference to the "normal" network card". Third, do I get a 1st get time capsule and "force" (if possible") to use only 'N' while my free WiFi modem from my internet provider broadcasts 'g' signals to other 'g' laptop OR spend a lot more to get the new mode with dual band.

I haven't been able to find out an answer for this. I bought a MB467LL/A model Macbook (2.4ghz previous unibody version that became the Macbook pro). Local store had them on closeout and it was a hot deal. Anyway, it was brand new and had a 0% battery when I brought it home. It's been about 12 hours and still isn't quite charged fully. Almost though.
Is this normal for a brand new battery? I can't imagine it usually takes 12 hours to fully charge the battery. I've never had a computer ship with a dead battery before so I'm wondering if it was bad or simply that's how they come now a days.

Tabbed browsing has introduced a new browsing paradigm in which one can rapidly open many pages linked from specific articles or aggregation sites to read at a later point. Having adapted this paradigm and used it widely in my browsing habits, I have noticed that it falls short in a few instances. Often, I will open a list of tabs and then start reading through the pages left to right. At each page, I may want to open additional links from that page into new tabs in the current window. However, when I do so, they appear at the end of the list, sometimes many tabs away from the related article.
What I would like to see is a preference or a modifier key that would cause additional tabs to be opened immediately after the current tab but before the following tabs in the list. This would allow me to group related tabs more easily. This would probably work best as a modifier key rather than an option in the browser preferences, since the current behavior may be desirable when a series of tabs are opened in order of importance or chronology.

I have an external HDD hooked up to my iMac. It's from Freecom, and I believe it contains a Seagate ST310005 disk. I formatted the disk, and set up Time Machine. It seems to go well, TM makes the first back-up without any problems. But, even though TM is turned on and set to back things up, nothing I put on my PC after the initial back-up gets backed up. I put a folder on my desktop, put some files in it, and they are nowhere to be found in the TM back-ups.

The volume level for the built-in speakers is remembered across boots, but it is not remembered for headphones.
I.e. Whenever I plug in the headphones after a boot, the volume level sets itself to 50% - too loud for my ears and possibly damaging to the headphones.
Anybody know of a way to change this behavior? - To set an initial volume level for headphones?
I have OSX 10.5.6.

I've just noticed trying to upgrade from 10.5 to SL that my Superdrive is acting funny. Anyone that's heard a superdrive knows that when you put a disc in the machine it spins up to a first "plateau" and then spins up to full speed. In my case, it spins up to the initial plateau and then spins down again. It will do this cycle maybe 3 - 4 times and then sometimes spit the disc back out. Occasionally it will continue this spin-up-spin-down cycle until I restart and hold the click button (eject does nothing). I am screwed (I'm just out of warrantee). Its a real shame - I use the optical drive so infrequently that I would never notice there was a problem until it's too late. This is a 2009 15" MBP, 2.66 ghz with 4gb ram running 10.5.8. I have a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868

I have a project to do in iBook Author, and Apple have provided a list of fonts that can are used in iOS, but I cannot seem to find them on my system. When my mac was inistially set up, all fonts unecessary for the system were removed to avoid any clashes with our in-house fonts, so I'm not sure if the Lion mac initially shipped with the iOS fonts installed. In the 'old days', I'd simply put the system disk in the mac and use a utility like 'pacifist' to explore the contents of the intallation disk, and retrieve the fonts from there – but in Lion, all I have is this 'Rescue Disk'. How would I go about retrieving fonts from there without touching anything else on my system?
