I accidentally overwrote a TIFF file, downsizing the original to 900x600. Through back-up all copies on the two back-up drives are equally overwritten. I have not set up time machine, so going back the timeline is not an option. Is it possible to restore the overwritten file without the help of a professional recovery service?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got a video file which was deleted and partially overwritten by other files. It's about 100MB but there's only ~2MB or so that's been overwritten. Data Rescue 2 didn't recover it, but testdisk did (testdisk seems to be able to recover files that are partially overwritten, so the headers of the file must be intact.) Now that I've recovered the movie, it won't play. Is there any software out there that can play corrupted video files? Is there any way of recovering parts of the video file?

View 24 Replies View RelatedI've subscribed to a web-based service that allows me to view court documents online, but QuickTime won't let me view anything more than the first page of these tiff files. The regular version of QuickTime won't allow me to view multiple pages, even if I do uncheck tiff files in the settings. I'm using Google Chrome, but I can't seem to find a good plugin to view multiple tiff pages. The only way I can view multiple pages on a tiff file from this Internet program is to uninstall QuickTime. But if I do that I can't get iTunes to play. I'd go ahead and pay the $30 to upgrade to QuickTime Pro if I thought that would solve my problem, but I don't know if that will work. Does anyone know if QuickTime Pro will allow users to view multiple pages in a Tiff File?

I just got a new external harddrive and I was copying everything to it, I cancelled the process so I could try something else, then I dragged the folder again and clicked replace. But I did it the wrong way. The first time I did it I went like this
Mac HD --> External
and then I stupidly went like this
External --> Mac HD
Therefore replacing the files with nothing. This is 19gb of footage that I need terribly bad.

I had a mid-2008 MacBook Pro running 10.6. I used filevault on the main user. Unfortunately the logic board died while I was logged in. I bought a new MacBook Pro and Apple successfully moved the files across, however, when I go to login it says "you are unable to log in to the FileVault user account". Using disk utility I found the disk needed to be repaired and did that and repaired disk permissions to no avail. I have another admin account that doesnt use FileVault on this laptop... is it possible to get in through it?? I was reading about using terminal, however, all advice was OS 10.4 or earlier. I don't know if this poses any significance but in the other admin account the internet won't turn on. Even if I successfully add wifi or plug in my usb tethering enabled iphone 4 it won't connect. Also the user file seems a tad small (only 25GB) so I'm concerned I've lost some data.

My friend has a MacBook, and I have a paper due for a class in about a week, so I was wondering if I could hook my HD to her computer and recover just the word document. I would have tried this by now if the guy at the store who's replacing my hard drive had not told me to be extremely careful when trying this or else it won't restore when I get my computer back.

Everything shows up fine in Acrobat and the Illustrator file is huge, indicative that the links are actually in the Illustrator file. A few years ago in high school trip to europe i made an imovie hd project. i am on a new mbp and i have a backup of my old mbp and when i transfer the file macintosh hd->user->movies->europe movie project it doesnt seem to bring the video with it (i cant even locate it!) i opened with imovie and the old imovie hd and the same thing, no video file! any ideas as to where the video files are located? im freakin out here lol

I have two disks I have been working with one on my MacBook Pro (HFS+) and one connected to a Linux machine (FAT - this is an external hard drive). Recently I started exploring backing up my files with rsync over an ssh from my Mac to the external hard drive connected to the Linux machine. I did this once successfully and ported all of my Mac files to the external. However, I did something incorrectly the second time and I believe I may have done rsync in the wrong direction and it has overwritten some files on my Mac (configuration files for iCal that had events stored, an iPhone program I've been working on). The full rsync command I used was the following:

However, I was under the impression rsync wouldn't touch files that are timestamped at a newer date so even if it was copying from the linux external to the mac hard drive why would it overwrite newer files??
I have recently downloaded scalpel to try to see if I could find these files but every time I run

i have just plugged my ipod into my laptop and it wiped all my songs. i have my ipod on manual sync but im not sure what happened. is there anyway i can recover my files or are they gone forever?

Well, I just noticed that most of the 10,000 songs in my library have at some point lost the original 'date added' they used to have. Now, the earliest date is sometime in February of 2010. And some have been set to just a few days ago. How did this happen? Is this a bug of iTunes 10? I only just noticed this, so I'm not sure when it happened.

I'm trying to convert tiff's into jpeg's and have tried two methods that DON'T WORK. I tried dragging them into iPhoto but a window comes up saying it doesn't recognize the file and 2) tried opening in Preview to "Save as" but the pic won't even open up in Preview.

So I literally just spent hours putting together a video for school. I exited out of iMovie knowing it was supposed to save the file on its own. I open it back up to check on it and *poof* it's completely gone. I searched my hardrive and the file exists but it will not open with iMovie or Quicktime. Is there any way to recover this video?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI accidentally formatted my external hard drive when I was creating a Windows USB install disk with Boot Camp It was a HFS+ formatted drive with a GUID partition table and 2 partitions: one clone of my Macbook OS, and one with personal data. I'm not worried about the OS clone, I'm more concerned about getting my personal data back on the second partition.So far I've used Stellar Phoenix and Data Rescue 3. I reformatted the hard drive from FAT to HFS+ before I did these scans. Not sure if it was a good idea, but the programs wouldn't scan properly otherwise.Stellar finds my files with the original folder structure, but I can't open any of the files, even though the file sizes seem to be correct. Data Rescue partially finds the original folder structure, and also has a "Reconstructed files" section which has all my files sorted by file type and without the original file name. I really want to avoid going through all my photos, videos, etc. one by one to sort them out.
Can I still recover my files in the original folder structure? Why can Stellar find all my files basically intact, but I can't open anything? In the meantime, I'm going to try scanning with Disk Drill and FileSalvage with fingers crossed...
I connected my windows removable disk to my colleague's mac to transfer some data. Accidentally her system started a time machine backup on my removable disk. Although we stopped it during middle of the process, now my disk is no longer recognizable in windows and all I can see under a mac system is her backup file.
The process took a very short time. I wonder if it has deleted everything. Is there any chance I can get the overwritten data back? They are very important to me.
Besides, is it a common problem of time machine backup? It is too dangerous for the removable disks.
